A Visit from Maggie O'Malley & An As Directed Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Maggie O'Malley to the blog today. You can find Maggie on the pages of the Maggie O'Malley Mystery series by Kathleen Valenti. AS DIRECTED, the third book in the series, will be released March 12, 2019.

The pharmacy is dead.

That’s more than a metaphor.

Yes, the drugstore where I work is empty, devoid of noise or breath or the heartbeat of steps across the white tile floor.

But I’m not thinking of the CLOSED, PLEASE CALL AGAIN! sign hanging on the front door. I’m thinking of the reason for the closure.

The way the detective’s face twisted into a strange smile as she interviewed me.

The questions that hung in the air between us.

The body of Colton Ellis cooling beneath my hands as I tried to pound life back into his heart.

The pharmacy is dead because the dead have been found here.

A stone of disquiet sits heavy in my chest, not just for the loss of life in the drugstore or what could be the death knell of my fledgling career as a pharmacy technician. There’s a heaviness surrounding the question of what’s next. Or perhaps more to the point, who’s next.

I try to tell myself that I’m being paranoid, that I’m spinning out of control because of what’s happened at the pharmacy and what’s happening inside my head—the persistent fog that has swirled through the whirls and folds of my brain since the accident.

But it’s more than that. It’s the feeling that I’m somehow part of this. That I’m being watched. That I’m being lured toward something dangerous and inevitable with my every move.

I walk toward the back of the pharmacy, gliding past digestive aids and pain relievers and duck behind the counter. I’m here for answers. I’m here for peace. I’m here because in the deadness of the pharmacy, in the quiet dark among pills and elixirs, I feel at home. I feel in control. I feel safe.

Now I just have to convince my pounding heart to agree.
