Currently Reading...

I just started reading Mrs. Morris and the Pot of Gold by Traci Wilton. This book is the sixth in the Salem B&B Mystery series and was released last week.

It's St. Patrick's Day in Salem and Charlene is bringing all of her B&B guests out to celebrate. Although the reservations are muddled and the woman in charge seems a bit overwhelmed everyone seems to be having a good time. That is until a drunk relative of the organizer forces his way in and makes a scene. Determined to ignore him, Charlene has fun with her guests until the event ends. A scarf left by one of her guests leads Charlene back inside only to be pushed aside by someone in a hoodie as she discovers the family black sheep on the floor. At least no one is dead...yet.

Something Fishy This Way Comes - A Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to let Whitney Dagner take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Whit on the pages of the Whit and Whiskers Mystery series. SOMETHING FISHY THIS WAY COMES is the second book in the series and was released last month.

Hello there, island visitors! Jump on into my golf cart (because I’ll be in my seventies before I could get an actual car on island—rules and all that) and let’s take a little jaunt around this place I like to call home. Our grandparents, Goldie (don’t call her Grandma or you risk your life) and Pops, have now retired, or so they say. That left Nick to run the boat tours on Catalina all by himself. I couldn’t let him have all the fun. So I dragged my best friend Maribel Hernandez over with me from our corporate world in Long Beach, and we became residents of this beautiful little town of Avalon. Maribel, my cat, Whiskers, and I are starting fresh here on Catalina and nothing can ruin that. I’m coming back to my favorite place from my childhood, and Maribel is experiencing life on the island to the fullest.

By the way, I’m Whitney Dagner, Whit for short, and I’ll be your guide around the island of Santa Catalina. We have stores galore, including my own little novelty shop, and buffalo too (seriously, someone left them after a movie shoot and now they’re our island friends, though I wouldn’t get too close). And Nick and I run the glass-bottom boat tour in the bay. We take our guests out to see all kinds of beautiful things under the sea. Some a little more unexpected than others. But that’s a story for another time.

We’re small but mighty on this little slice of heaven out in the ocean. Ignore the guy who keeps trying to wave at you. Nick is my brother and a pain in the… well, we’ll skip that. But I guess I’ll keep him because, family, you know…

It is beautiful here, even when we have to deal with unsavory people and things going awry. Let’s not focus on that, though. There are so many other, better things to concentrate on. Like the amazing colors of the sky as the sun sinks behind the mountain in the middle of the island. The birds that flock to the island. The acres and acres of sanctuary. And the way the waves break gently against the shore line in Avalon. Of course, I might never look at the water quite the same way since I found out that my ex-boyfriend, Felix Ramirez, who I thought I’d left behind on the mainland, accepted a job with the small police department as a diver.

If a little trouble gets in our way, then we’ll deal with it. Hopefully we’ll even get to live through it…

SOMETHING FISHY THIS WAY COMES by Gabby Allan
The Second Whit and Whiskers Mystery

When Whitney Dagner heads over to the golf course to bury one of her shop's special treasures she's not entirely surprised to find two twitchers, AKA birdwatchers, arguing. What is surprising is that they're doing it over a dead body. The body is that of Leo Franklin, a young man who finally got his life turned around and whose family is on one side of a longstanding feud. Before the police arrive a whole contingency of Aherns arrive, the opposing family in the feud, declaring his death a suicide. Whit is doubtful Leo would take his own life and when his family asks her to look into matters, she can't resist, especially since the Chief of police is an Ahern and eager to rule the death a suicide. Whit and her friends will scramble to get to the truth before the coroner calls case closed, or someone closes the case on them!

I find feuds fascinating, especially when current family members have no clue what the feud is actually about. That's the case in SOMETHING FISHY THIS WAY COMES, and Whit believes discovering the root of the feud will lead to the murderer of today. I love the way Whit works with her family and friends to solve a puzzle, as well as live their best lives on Catalina Island. Always there for each other, caring, but poking fun as well, they bring love and community to the pages.

The mystery was complex. How did Leo actually die? Was his death due to the feud? Or was it something more recent? Who wanted him dead and who could have killed him? These questions have Whit and readers alike puzzled. But the murder isn't the only problem Whit has to solve, she also has Goldie's new ideas for the shop. I enjoy the balance between mystery, island drama, and daily living.

SOMETHING FISHY THIS WAY COMES is a fast paced quick read. Charming characters, lots of laughs, and a complex puzzle make this second Whit and Whiskers Mystery a fun and refreshing delight.

Concession Stand Crimes - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to let Madeline Boucher take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Madeline on the pages of the Ballpark Mystery series by Nicole Asselin. Concession Stand Crimes is the second book in the series.

Hi friends! This is your friendly social media liaison for the Abington Armadillos, Madeline Boucher, here to talk to you about the exciting events we have at the ballpark coming up!

Oh, what’s that? You want to know about the deaths at the ballpark? I mean, yes. We did have that tragic death of that scout guy, Chris. I mean, it turned out to be a fallout between shady characters, so nothing to worry about. Yes, my brother was a suspect, but luckily we were able to clear his name. And when I say “we”, I mean, me and my family. We always stick together.

Now I’m trying to get attendance up at the ballpark, and part of that plan is to start doing theme nights. Our first big theme night is 80’s night! Who doesn’t love an 80’s theme party? I’ve been taking inspiration from other Minor League Teams and following the very fun Savannah Banana’s on social media to learn different ways to “jazz” up the ballpark. Plus, all this new fun stuff will hopefully make people forget about the death that had happened at the beginning of the season.

I’ve been working with the owner of the concession stands about getting more food added to the menus, and hopefully bringing in a different crowd. More health conscious options and updated craft beers. Which reminds me, I think I have an appointment with someone from the Redmond Brewery this week. But that can wait.I hope you and your family decide to come out to some games this season! The Boucher family would love to have you, and you get the chance to see our new star Mookie Martinez before he eventually moves back to the majors.

MADELINE BOUCHER is still reeling from her first few weeks of working for her family’s Independent League Baseball Team, the Abington Armadillos. She found a dead body and survived a kidnapping before finally clearing her brother of a murder. She didn’t think anything could be as dramatic as that, but she was wrong.

Her parents have given her more responsibility in running ballpark events in the hopes that they could retire and leave the team in her hands. Her brother is moving on to the big leagues, so this is her time to shine. Her first task? Deal with a concession stand kerfuffle. Redmond Brewery heiress, Alaska Redmond, storms her way into the ballpark making demands.

The next day, the son of the concession’s manager finds Redmond’s body in one of the beer stands along the ballpark concourse. Again, Madeline finds herself immersed in an investigation. While the suspects start piling up, including a promising young player on the team, Madeline knows she must get involved. With the help of Davis, her new love interest and head of the security department, she delves deeper into the death of the heiress.

Trying to run team events, solve a murder, and have a normal life take their toll as Madeline comes to depend on those in her baseball-loving community, including Bronia, her old family friend who runs a garden center and helps her make sense of things. She even chances a psychic for advice while at a Salem Warlock’s away game. Will anyone help her untangle the mess of suspects including the victim’s family?

Can she clear the name of the Abington Armadillos and start focusing on the season?

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder: An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Valerie Burns to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Valerie writes the Baker Street Mystery series. TWO PARTS SUGAR, ONE PART MURDER is the first book in the series and will be released Tuesday!

Kathy: You start a new series with TWO PARTS SUGAR, ONE PART MURDER. Why start a new series and what was its inspiration?

VB: I wrote 3 cozy mystery series for several years. However, in 2020 I finished my last contractual book, and I had no other books on the horizon. It was a bit of a shock to realize. I needed to regroup. Here was an opportunity to do something different. So, I evaluated my likes/dislikes. I briefly considered writing a something completely different, but my heart wasn’t in it. I didn’t enjoy it. I wanted to write the types of books that I love to read, cozy mysteries. So, I dusted myself off and wrote two proposals for new series. I love dogs. I love food. Both of the new proposals included dogs. One included food. Here was an opportunity to write something fun and different. To my surprise, and joy, both proposals sold. Then my publisher decided to continue my Mystery Bookshop series. So, after a brief hiatus, I’m back in my happy place, writing 3 cozy mystery series.

Kathy: After being left at the altar, Maddy Montgomery gets an opportunity to regroup and rebrand. Have you ever rebranded yourself?

VB: Like Maddy Montgomery, I have regrouped and rebranded myself many times. Returning to grad school for another Masters Degree (MFA) to pursue a career as a writer, and moving from Michigan to Tennessee, were both big regrouping/rebranding opportunities. Starting this new series is a rebranding of sorts. Maddy (and Baby) are both very different from my other series. Even using my name, Valerie Burns, instead of V. M. Burns, is another form of rebranding.

Kathy: Maddy is a social media maven. Are you all things #media or do you prefer it in small doses?

VB: I get a great deal of pleasure living vicariously through my characters. Maddy is the social media diva that I long to be. Maybe one day…

Kathy: Maddy is tasked with running her late aunt's bakery. Do you like to bake?

VB: I do enjoy baking, but the planets have to be aligned perfectly for me to actually do it. I enjoy the creative process and eating the finished results. I’m not a fan of the cleanup.

Kathy: Maddy also has to care for a 250-pound English mastiff named Baby. I love dogs, especially big dogs, but I've never known a dog as big as Baby. What about you?

VB: I love dogs and I have 2 toy poodles (Chloe and Kenzie). I have 2 friends who both had English mastiffs and loved them. Both were well over 200 lbs. Including a mastiff in this series, provides an opportunity for me to live vicariously through Maddy. I get all of the benefits without any of the consequences of owning a big dog. I consider it the best of both worlds.

Kathy: When it comes to writing I understand there are 2 general camps-plotters, who diligently plot their stories, and pansters, who fly by the seat of their pants. Are you a plotter, a panster, or do you fall somewhere in between?

VB: I’m a pantser who longs to be a plotter. I’ve tried many times to switch, but I was miserable. My editor requires a synopsis, so I have a general idea of where the story is going, but I get a great deal of pleasure in letting my characters free and seeing where they take me.

Kathy: Authors are required to do a lot of their own marketing, especially for a new release. What's your favorite part of marketing your work? What do you dislike about marketing?

VB: Promoting my books forces me outside of my comfort zone in many ways. I enjoy talking to readers. However, talking to strangers is the scariest and also one of the best parts of promoting my books. I’m often nervous before a book event. However, afterward, I come away energized.

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

VB: In December 2022, the 8th book in my Mystery Bookshop Mystery series, BOOKCLUBBED TO DEATH will release. Next year, be on the lookout for a new cozy mystery series, which is yet untitled. Check out my website and sign up for my newsletter to get the latest information when its available.

TWO PARTS SUGAR, ONE PART MURDER by Valerie Burns
The First Baker Street Mystery

Humiliated when her fiance is a no show for their live streamed wedding, social media expert Madison Montgomery is eager to get out of town and lie low. The opportunity arises when a great aunt she barely knew died and named Maddy her sole heir. Leaving LA for New Bison, Michigan Maddy learns she must live in Aunt Octavia's house, run her bakery, and take care of Baby, her 250 pound English Mastiff. Eager to prove herself, Maddy takes on the challenge, even though she can't cook. Things get more difficult when a fire breaks out in the bakery and the mayor is found dead inside. What was the Mayor doing in her shop after hours? Will Maddy be able to start a successful new life? Or will a killer stop her before she can even get started?

As I started TWO PARTS SUGAR, ONE PART MURDER I did not like #SocialMedia Maddy. I found her shallow, snobbish, and immature. Or, as Great Aunt Octavia said, spoiled. However, I soon discovered that Maddy had a good heart and was willing to see her imperfections. As the book progressed, so did she, and I see her growing as the series continues. In the end, I like her! I also like the friends she's made in New Bison. Now, I had to willingly suspend my belief. I know a few people with dementia, and I've never seen it presented like Hannah, who is perfectly fine, then doesn't know who anyone is, but docilely goes with them, naps and wakes perfectly lucid again. I also doubt a sheriff quickly makes friend with a person of interest, even if they don't believe them guilty. Still, suspending my disbelief, I really liked them and the friendship they cultivated with Maddy. I grinned at the fact that a romantic interest happens to be a vet, when she's done with doctors and I enjoy the navy/army ribbing. I absolutely adore Baby.

I enjoyed the mystery and while we have a conclusion, I think we'll discover not all has been resolved. There's a lot more shady things happening in New Bison and I can't wait to discover more! There are recipes at the end of the book, but, while it may be a family secret, I hope Maddy eventually shares Octavia's chocolate cake recipe. In the meantime, I'll have to be satisfied with those of her apple turnover and lemon zucchini bread.

TWO PARTS SUGAR, ONE PART MURDER is a satisfying tale of deceit and murder, while coming to your own. New friendships, delectable dishes, and an engaging mystery make a great start to a new series.

Death at the Manor - A Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway

DEATH AT THE MANOR by Katharine Schellman
The Third Lily Adler Mystery

Accompanied by her friends, Lord and Lady Carroway, young widow Lily Adler decides to leave the hustle and bustle of London for a while and visit her aunt in the countryside. But all is not quiet in Hampshire. Rumors of a ghost haunting neighboring Belleford Manor lead Lily, along with the charming Mr. Spencer to the old manse. Their tour is cut short by very human screams, the matron of the house has been found dead inside her locked bedroom. While the family is certain she has been murdered by the ghost, Lily is sure the killer is human. But how on earth did the killer manage it?

A locked room mystery in a creepy old house that is reportedly haunted in Regency England? Yes, thank you! I absolutely love the premise and the execution was delightful. Although I'm generally a stickler for reading series in order, the plot was right up my alley and I dived in to the third Lily Adler Mystery. While I may have had a more nuanced read if I would have had the time to read the first two books in the series, DEATH AT THE MANOR worked fine as a standalone.

The characters and their relationships are intriguing and very human. Pride, love, friendship, and family all play a part, both positively and negatively. The interplay between Lily and Matthew, the love between the Carroways, the role of the servants of Belleford and the townspeople combine to add depth to the mystery. Plenty of suspects, curious motives, and a seemingly impossible crime had me captivated and more than one surprise caught me off guard.

DEATH AT THE MANOR is an ingenious period mystery that incorporates a gothic vibe with a character driven plot.

Synopsis:

Death at the Manor by Katharine Schellman

The tortured spirits of the dead haunt a Regency-era English manor—but the true danger lies in the land of the living in the third installment in the Lily Adler mysteries, perfect for fans of Deanna Raybourn.

Regency widow Lily Adler is looking forward to spending the autumn away from the social whirl of London. When she arrives in Hampshire with her friends, the Carroways, she doesn’t expect much more than a quiet country visit and the chance to spend time with her charming new acquaintance, Matthew Spencer.

But something odd is afoot in the small country village. A ghost has taken up residence in the Belleford manor, a lady in grey who wanders the halls at night, weeping and wailing. Half the servants have left in terror, but the family seems delighted with the notoriety that their ghost provides. Intrigued by this spectral guest, Lily and her party immediately make plans to visit Belleford.

They arrive at the manor the next morning ready to be entertained—only to find that tragedy has struck. The matriarch of the family has just been found killed in her bed.

The dead woman’s family is convinced that the ghost is responsible. Lily is determined to learn the truth before another victim turns up—but could she be next in line for the Great Beyond?

Read an excerpt:

As they walked, Mr. Wright fell in step next to Ofelia. “Have you ever seen a ghost before, Lady Carroway?”

“I have not,” she replied, as polite as ever in spite of the hint of skepticism in her voice. “Pray, what does it look like?”

“Like a lady in white and gray,” he said, and Lily was surprised to see how serious his expression was. His frivolous, unctuous manner had dropped away, and he shivered a little as he gestured toward the windows. “No one has seen her face. The first time I saw her she was standing right there, bathed in moonlight, when I was returning from a late night in the village. And my sister saw her in the early morning only two days ago. Some nights, we have heard her wails echoing through the halls, even when she is nowhere to be seen.”

Lily exchanged a look with her aunt, who seemed surprised by the detail in Thomas Wright’s story and the quaver in his voice. Either he believed wholeheartedly in his ghost, or he was putting on a very convincing performance for his audience.

“And what does she do?” Ofelia asked, sounding a little more somber now, as they drew

to a halt in front of the windows. The small party looked around the corner of the hall. It was unremarkable enough, with several large paintings, and a tall, handsome curio cabinet standing in an alcove. An old-fashioned tapestry hung across one wall, though it was worn and faded enough that it was hard to tell exactly what picture it had originally presented.

“Nothing, so far,” Mr. Wright said, a sort of forced theatricality in his voice that left Lily puzzled.

She had expected, based on what Mr. Spencer had said the night before, to find an eager showman in Thomas Wright, ready to bask in the attention of curious neighbors, not a true believer in the supernatural. Glancing at Mr. Spencer out of the corner of her eye, she thought he looked equally puzzled.

“She stands and weeps, or floats around the hall and wails. Usually, if someone tries to draw close, she vanishes. But last month—” Mr. Wright’s voice dropped a little. He still glanced

uneasily toward the other end of the hall, as if momentarily distracted or looking for someone, before quickly returning his attention to his audience. “Last month she became angry when one of our housemaids came upon her unexpectedly. The lady in gray pursued her down the hall, wailing. Poor Etta was so scared that she fell down the stairs in her haste to get away. That

was when our servants started leaving.”

“I trust the housemaid has recovered?” Mr. Spencer asked, sounding genuinely concerned.

“She has,” Mr. Wright replied. “But no one has tried to approach the lady in gray again. We think she wishes to be left alone.”

“Well,” Lily said, attempting a return to lightness, “as far as ghosts go, that sounds reasonable enough. I confess I feel that way often enough myself, especially after too many busy nights in a row.”

Ofelia, who had been looking a little wide-eyed, giggled, and Mr. Spencer quickly covered a cough that might have been a chuckle.

Mr. Wright scowled, his expression halfway between unease and displeasure. “I take it you are not a woman who believes in ghosts, Mrs. Adler?”

“I have never had the opportunity to find out whether or not I am,” Lily replied. “The homes I have lived in have all been stubbornly unhaunted.”

“For your sake, madam, I hope they remain that way,” Mr. Wright said. There was an unexpected note of resignation in his voice as he added, “It is not a comfortable thing to live with.”

“I would have thought you to be fond of yours, sir,” Lily said. “If you dislike her so, why go to the trouble of showing visitors around and telling them the story?”

Mr. Wright smiled, some of the showman creeping back into his manner. “Because you are here, dear ladies. And how could I resist such a beautiful audience?”

“Tell me, has your family any idea who this lady in gray might be?” Lily’s aunt asked politely.

He nodded, his voice dropping even further, and they all reflexively drew closer to hear what he was saying. “We each have our own theory, of course,” he said. “I believe it is my father’s great-aunt, Tabitha, whose bedroom was just this way. If you would care to see the spot?” He held out his arm to Ofelia, who took it. Mr. Wright, engrossed in his story once more, turned to lead them down the closest passage. “Tabitha died there some fifty years ago, of a broken heart, they say, after news arrived of the death of her betrothed in the colonies—”

His story was suddenly cut off by screaming. Not a single shriek of surprise or dismay, but a cry that seemed to go on without ceasing. Thomas Wright froze, the genial smile dropping from his face in shock. “Selina?” he called.

The screaming continued, growing more hysterical. Dropping Ofelia’s arm, he ran toward the sound, which was coming from the far hallway, past the stairs. The others, stunned into stillness, stared at each other, unsure what to do.

“I think it’s Miss Wright,” Mr. Spencer said, all traces of merriment gone from his face. “Wait here—I shall see if they need any assistance.” He made to go after, but Thomas Wright was already returning, rushing down the hall next to another man, who was carrying the screaming woman.

“The parlor, just next to you, Spencer!” Mr. Wright called. “Open the door!”

Mr. Spencer, the closest to the door, flung it open, and the hysterical woman was carried in. She was laid on a chaise longue in the middle of the dim little room, Mr. Spencer stepping forward to help settle her as the man who had carried her stepped back. Lily, glancing

around as she and the other ladies crowded through the door, thought it looked like a space reserved for the family’s private use, which made sense on an upper floor. Thomas Wright knelt next to the hysterical woman for a moment, clasping her hands.

“Selina?” he said loudly. But she kept screaming, her eyes wide and darting about the room without seeing anything. Judging by the round cheeks and dark hair they both shared, Lily thought she must be his sister. Whether they had other features in common was hard to tell when Selina Wright was in the middle of hysterics.

“Miss Wright?” Matthew Spencer tried giving her shoulders a shake. “You must stop this at once!”

But she clearly could not hear either of them. Thomas Wright took a deep breath and looked grim as, with a surprising degree of practicality, he slapped her across the face.

The screams stopped abruptly, her blank expression resolving into one of terror before her eyes latched on her brother. Her face crumpled in misery. “Oh, Thomas!” she sobbed, gasping for breath.

He gave her shoulders a little shake. “Selina, stop this—you must tell me what happened.” But she only shook her head, clutching at his coat with desperate fists and dropping her head against his shoulder, her weeping shaking them both. Mr. Wright turned to the servant who had carried his sister. “Isaiah, what happened to her?”

Isaiah was a young Black man with very short, curly hair and broad shoulders. His plain, dark clothing marked him clearly as a servant, though it was nothing so formal as the livery that

would have been worn in a great house. His wide stance spoke of confidence, and the easy way that Thomas Wright addressed him indicated long service and familiarity.

But there was no confidence on the manservant’s face as he hesitated, gulping visibly and shaking his head. His eyes were wide, and he stumbled over his words as he tried to answer, either unsure how to respond or not wanting to. “It’s . . . it’s Mrs. Wright, sir. She didn’t open her door when we knocked, and Miss Wright . . . she asked me to open it, since no one has the key . . . and she was there, sir—Mrs. Wright. She was there but she wasn’t moving. There was nothing we could do, but there was no one else there what could have done it. She’s dead, sir,” he finished in a rush. “Mrs. Wright is dead. She was killed in the night.”

Beside her, Lily heard Ofelia gasp, though she didn’t turn to look at her friend. Mr. Spencer looked up, his dark eyes wide as he met Lily’s from across the room. She stared back at him, frozen in shock, unable to believe what she had just heard.

“Killed?” Thomas Wright demanded, his voice rising with his own disbelief and his arms tightening around his sister.

“It killed her, Thomas,” Selina Wright said, raising her head at last. Now that her hysterics had faded, her cheeks had gone ashen with fear. “There was no one else who could have entered that room. The lady in gray killed our mother.”

Death at the Manor - An Interview, Excerpt, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Katharine Schellman to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Katharine writes the Lily Adler Mystery series. Death at the Manor is the third book in the series and was released earlier this month. Be sure to return to the blog Friday for my review!

Kathy: The Lily Adler Mystery series is set in Regency England, a favorite time period of mine. Why did you choose to set your series at this place and time?

KS: I originally thought I was writing a Regency romance, so the characters I created were very much a product of that time period. Once I started writing, though, it quickly became clear that romance was not on the table for them. But murder definitely was!

Kathy: In Death at the Manor Lily leaves the social whirl of London to spend time in Hampshire. Do you prefer the quiet countryside or an active city?

KS: I’m more of a city person, mostly because I hate driving and love being able to walk wherever I want to go. But the city I’m currently living in is quite small, and surrounded by mountains and farms, so I’m also cultivating my country side these days and really enjoying it.

Kathy: All is not quiet in this small country village, however. A ghost has taken up residence in the Belleford manor. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever had an encounter with a spirit?

KS: I think I believe that they’re a possibility, but I haven’t yet heard a ghost story that I wasn't skeptical of.

Kathy: Would you knowingly stay in a haunted hotel?

KS: No! I guess that means I do believe in them?

Kathy: What first drew you to historical mysteries?

KS: I grew up watching old BBC mysteries with my parents, many of which were historical (even if they were based on books that were modern when they were written.) So I’ve always loved them!

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

KS: Not yet, but I’d love to. I have to find the right story first, though.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

KS: The series follows Lily Adler, a young widow in Regency England who, in the process of rebuilding her life after the death of her husband, discovered a disconcerting knack for catching murderers. Death at the Manor is the third Lily Adler Mystery, and it mixed a locked-room whodunit with a bit of a gothic vibe for a twisty, slightly creepy, romantic mystery.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

KS: I can’t choose—I love them all

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

KS: The characters of Lily and Ofelia just walked into my mind fully formed. Then I had to find the right plot for them, which took a little while. Then I had to write the book, which took even longer!

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

KS: I’ve known I wanted to be a writer since I was about six years old, so I always knew I wanted to have books published. Getting to the point where my work was publishable, though, took a bit of time.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

KS: The Art of Theft by Grace D. Li. It’s a modern heist story about art theft that is quite lyrical and beautiful, in addition to being exciting.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

KS: I wish I had more hobbies, but between writing, my day job, and two kids, I don’t have a ton of free time. I love traveling when I can, visiting coffee shops around my city, and doing yoga.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

KS: Olive oil, canned chickpeas, dark chocolate, black tea

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

KS: I’m currently working on the fourth Lily Adler mystery, which should be coming out next year. My second series, the Jazz Age Nightingale mysteries, will also be getting a new installment in 2023. It’s going to be a busy year!

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

KS: Interacting with readers, without a doubt. Writing can be solitary and stressful, but hearing from readers is always wonderful.

One April After the War: Cumberland to Washington - A Review

 Review

ONE APRIL AFTER THE WAR: CUMBERLAND TO WASHINGTON
By G. S. Boarman
M. Warner Annals Book II

Having escaped the lock and near certain death, Merritt and Argent catch up with M, only to discover that she's been shot. With M gravely injured, but recovering, the two men try to determine who was behind the attempt on their lives as they get word to the president of their delay.

The second book in the M Warner Annals takes place just after the first book ended, with the two secret service agents left to die in a lock. This continuation makes it necessary to read the first book in order to understand what's going on. Actually, understanding is the key to this novel.

Merritt and Argent try to understand who has it out for them, wishing them not only dead, but wanting to bring humiliation and disgrace upon them, their office, and President Grant. They also try to understand M. M, meanwhile tries to understand the real reason for her summons to Washington. Misunderstandings abound, leading to the climactic moment on April 30th.

The book is also about healing, physical healing as well as the attempt to heal relationships. We see the correlation between physical injuries and psychological injuries as well as the damage done to relationships. There is wry humor, excitement, and dread. My mind was reeling from the multiple drugs M was dosed with, by others as well as herself, their interactions causing a good portion of the troubles.

ONE APRIL AFTER THE WAR: CUMBERLAND TO WASHINGTON is a journey of discovery. This compelling historical novel is a thought provoking read that touches on societal issues, morality, and freedom in 1870s America.

Six Feet Deep Dish - A Review

 Review

SIX FEET DEEP DISH by Mindy Quigley
The First Deep Dish Mystery

Opening a restaurant is stressful, even for experienced chef Delilah O’Leary. While her gourmet pizza recipes are practically perfect and her sous chef and bartender top rate, her wealthy fiance is a bit too laid back leading to a huge blowout. Despite his leaving, the restaurant's soft opening is going well, but when Delilah storms off to catch her wayward server she instead finds her elderly aunt with a gun in her hand and a man dead at her feet. Under a shade of suspicion, with her fiance missing, the restaurant unable to open, and no access to funds Delilah figures she better find the killer quick, before she's out of business for good.

I absolutely adored the first Deep Dish Mystery. I love the fact that Delilah O’Leary is a professional chef. She's a perfectionist who is attentive to detail, has no tolerance for fools or slackers, and has a volcanic temper. Traits also useful in solving crimes...well, not the temper part. Her character and the restaurant culture depicted here are so true to life I half wonder if the author spent time in the restaurant industry herself. I appreciate the fact that the characters found here are a little bit different from the average cast of cozy characters. Not only do we have a hot tempered chef as a protagonist, but a flighty new age fiance, a detective with a unique family history, a restaurant full of intriguing personalities, and a big cat named Butterball. I have a particular fondness for Butterball and Rabbit.

Descriptions of food throughout the book had me salivating and craving pizza, although, to be honest, I am not a fan of the deep dish variety. But don't tell Delilah. Be sure to read the recipes included at the end of the book, even if you never intend to make them. Various characters share the recipes in their own words and had me laughing out loud even as my mouth was watering!

With a nod to old time Chicago mobsters SIX FEET DEEP DISH serves up a great mystery sprinkled with humor and spiced with good food. This crisply written novel with an intriguing and thought provoking murder is a phenomenal start to a new series.

Charleston Conundrum - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Stacy Wilder to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Stacy Writes the Liz Adams Mystery series. Charleston Conundrum is the first book in the series and was released earlier this year.

Kathy: Charleston Conundrum takes the reader from Charleston, South Carolina, to Paris and back. If you had your druthers would you prefer to live in Charleston or Paris?

SW: Although one of my majors in college was French, and I’ve been to Paris twice, Charleston wins. The food, the ambience, the culture…something about the Atlantic Ocean has always tugged at my soul.

Kathy: Liz Adams has a truth sniffing Labrador Retriever named Duke. Do you have any pets?

SW: Our family has a passion for Labrador retrievers.

Our very first Labrador, Bear, was a surprise gift from my sisters. Bear had the special talent of being able to open the refrigerator. We had to keep a child lock on it.

Our second Labrador, Buddy, had a sense of humor, my sister-in-law and niece were watching him while we were out of town. Buddy stole her car keys and made her chase him around the house to retrieve them.

Our third Labrador, Rudy, was the athlete. He could scale a six-foot fence. Rudy was Buddy’s guilty conscience. Whenever Buddy did something wrong. Rudy would hang his head. One Christmas, I was to host the family Christmas Day dinner. While we were out on Christmas Eve, Buddy and Rudy helped themselves to the beef tenderloin that was defrosting in the sink. How they managed to get to it is still a mystery. Luckily, I was able to get to the store and purchase another tenderloin.

Our current Lab, Eve, who Duke was modeled after, is a communicator. Although she can’t detect when people are lying, she does howl the words, “I love you,” for her breakfast.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

SW: I grew up on Nancy Drew and Harriet the Spy. Mysteries are my go to books. I love Sue Grafton’s books.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

SW: I write children’s stories and poetry. Samples can be found on my website www.storystacy.com.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

SW: The Conundrum series travels to tourist destinations. Carmel Conundrum, set in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California is the next book in the series and is scheduled to release in early 2023.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

SW: Of course, the Labrador, Duke. He plays an even bigger part in the next book in the series, Carmel Conundrum.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

SW: Charleston is one of my favorite places in the world. The opening lines in Chapter One came to me while we were on vacation along the Atlantic coast. After crafting the characters for the first book, I wanted the characters to continue, and the ideas kept coming. Carmel Conundrum is currently in the editing phase, and I have rough outlines for books three and four in the series.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

SW: As a big birthday loomed, I decided to get serious about publishing Charleston Conundrum. Nearly fifteen years in the making, it was time to either do something with it or throw it in the trash. Taking classes, joining a writer’s group, and entering a contest helped motivate me to bring the story to fruition. The author community is very encouraging.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

SW: Beatrix Potter would be my very first choice. I’ve been obsessed with her life story since childhood, and I’ve been to Hill Top farm. Sue Grafton would definitely be my second choice. After that there are so many, can I have a party? If not, then, Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss), and Alexander Smith McCall are next.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

SW: The Tremble of Love: A Novel of the Baal Shem Tov written by Ani Tuzman. I love how she world builds in the story.

I competed with Ani and three other authors in a national contest. We all became fast friends and have regular Zoom calls. Although we’re scattered across the country, we’re hoping to have an in person reunion soon.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

SW: I’m an avid reader, gardening, traveling. Water aerobics is my favorite exercise class. I have a day job, so between writing and working I don’t have time for much else.

As an author, my mission is to deliver a delightful story to readers of all ages while benefiting a larger community.  I donate a portion of the proceeds from Charleston Conundrum to National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

SW: English Breakfast tea, treats for Eve, bottles of water and milk.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

SW: The other books in the Conundrum series. I have some children’s stories that I would love to publish. The Urban Wildlife series is designed to educate children about coexisting with wildlife in urban areas. Set in the Texas Hill Country, the books are written for ages six to eight. Urban Coyote is the first book in the series. The Adventures of Bear series is based on the true stories of our various Labrador retrievers. The moral of the story is about making someone’s day. Aimed toward kids of all ages, the series is intended for picture books. Bear’s Hospital Adventure is the first in the series. Free downloadable pdf copies are available on my website, www.storystacy.com

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

SW: I love connecting with readers and other authors.
