The Book of Beloved - Review

Review

THE BOOK OF BELOVED by Carolyn Haines
The First Pluto's Snitch Mystery

It's 1920 and Raissa James is about to take a journey which will change her life forever. The young widow has taken her Uncle Brett's offer to visit him at Caoin House. It's no secret that Caoin House is haunted, in fact it makes the perfect setting for Raissa who aspires to be a writer, a writer of ghostly tales in particular. But are the spirits a danger to the living? When Raissa's new gentleman friend falls to his death from the roof during a party it's declared an accident. But could he have been pushed? If so, by who? A person or a ghost? What is the truth behind the dark legends of the estate? Will more people die as the spirits of Caoin House try to keep their secrets hidden?

THE BOOK OF BELOVED starts slowly, enveloping you in the summer heat of the south, lulling you into a sense of complacency. I began to wonder if the book was really a mystery and as I continued I felt it becoming more of a Gothic novel than a mystery. But then I found the mystery and indeed THE BOOK OF BELOVED is a multilayered set of mysteries rooted in a Gothic background.

Set in the American South in 1920, the book shows both the grandeur and graciousness of the time as well as the hatred and bigotry. It holds a mirror up to today's society showing the harsh realities and vicious atrocities faced by everyone who isn't a wealthy white man.

I really loved this first Pluto's Snitch mystery. The combination of mystery, Gothic novel, and historical detail create a fascinating story. While I don't read horror, I do enjoy a good Gothic and Carolyn Haines provides plenty of chills and scares without going overboard. Richly developed characters, both living and dead, inhabit the pages while the slow revelation of the truth behind the legends of Caoin House provides added intrigue and suspense.

THE BOOK OF BELOVED is as deliciously creepy as the stories Raissa hopes to write. Imbued with a decadently Gothic atmosphere this novel also takes an unflinching glance at the social and political issues of the time, civil rights in particular, while delivering an intriguing mystery.

Our next stop: Disney World where we trained to be chefs, courtesy of the Walt Disney World University. A GED for my husband and many more years of education landed us in academia at The Ohio State University. Retired now from my role as a professor of social work and behavioral science, I have picked up a long-time interest in writing fiction. A Shadow Dancing Interview & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Julie Mulhern back to the blog today. Julie writes the Country Club Mystery series. Shadow Dancing is the seventh book in the series and was released earlier this month.

Kathy: In Shadow Dancing Ellison Russell visits a psychic. Have you ever visited a psychic? Did he or she use a crystal ball or another form of divination.

JM: I visited a psychic once when I was visiting a friend in Houston – probably twenty-five years ago. The psychic read my palm. I think she promised two children (a safe bet that paid off). She foretold three children for my friend (and missed the mark).

I am a skeptic.

Kathy: Ellison also has a witchy neighbor. What are your thoughts about witches? What are some benefits to including witches in mysteries?

JM: Ellison’s witchy neighbor is named after the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West. Her name is as close to actual witchy-ness as she gets. That said, having a magical solution or two, would be a wonderful way out when I’ve written myself into a corner!

Kathy: Do you think views towards psychics and witches has changed much since 1975? Do you think that if your book was set in 2018 instead of 1975 things would have been different?

JM: In 1975, I was eight. I wanted to believe in magic—ghosts, witches, faeries—I wanted them to be real. I kept my eyes open for sprites hiding in trees and gnomes sneaking for the back garden.

Now that I’m older (you do the math, I’m not going there), I’d still want to believe in magic but I don’t look for gnomes anymore.

Kathy: Was there a specific inspiration for this story?

JM: I was having lunch with a friend who told me a psychic had been contacted by another mutual friend who’d passed away. My luncheon friend believed. Absolutely.

I spent a few days thinking about what Ellison’s reaction would be and a book was born.

Kathy: Are you able to share any future plans for Ellison Russell?

JM: Ellison will be back in October in Back Stabbers. Much to Mother’s dismay, Ellison finds her stockbroker’s body.

Kathy: What's your favorite part about writing a series that takes place in the 1970s?

JM: When it comes to the 1970s, I wear rose-colored glasses. I love the nostalgia of writing a book set when I was a child.

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

JM: Book two of my Poppy Fields Adventure series will be out late summer. Poppy is going to Paris!

Shadow Dancing (The Country Club Murders) by Julie Mulhern

About the Book

Cozy Mystery 7th in Series
Henery Press (June 19, 2018)
Print Length: 210 pages
Visiting a psychic is outside the norm for Ellison Russell. Finding bodies is not. Unfortunately, the psychic’s crystal ball says she’ll soon be surrounded by death. Again.
Drat.
Now there’s a corpse in the front drive, a witchy neighbor ready to turn Ellison and her (not so) little dog into toadstools, and a stripper named Starry Knight occupying the guest room.
How did 1975 go so wrong so quickly?
Ellison must handle Mother (who’s found a body of her own), make up with a certain handsome detective, and catch a killer, or the death surrounding her might be her own.

About the Author

– Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders. She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean–and she’s got an active imagination. Once Upon a Spine - Review

Review

ONCE UPON A SPINE by Kate Carlisle
The Eleventh Bibliophile Mystery

Brooklyn Wainwright is a nervous wreck. Her future in-laws are coming to visit and she's in a panic wondering if they'll like her. Her anxiety level is increased as they will also be meeting her parents. How will Derek's British family react to Brooklyn's new agey mother? Easing her tension is the love she has not only for Derek, but their neighborhood with all the lovely shops and shopkeepers. Heck, the bookstore owners even let her touch their display only copy of a rare edition of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. But all is not as lovely as it seems. As Brooklyn goes out for an early cup of coffee she discovers the door to the local market open and inside finds the store trashed, the shop owner lying on the floor, and a body under a huge shelving unit. Is it an accident or has Brooklyn stumbled upon a murder once more?

Kate Carlisle creates such wonderful ambiance in her bibliophile series. Vivid descriptions allow me to visualize myself exploring the Courtyard and all its charming shops, spending time trying on hats I can't afford at Kitty's hat shop, trying to make healthy food choices at The Rabbit Hole (though more likely making choices at Sweetie Pies), and spending lots of money at Brothers Bookshop.

One of my favorites parts of each bibliophile mystery is learning about the classic book it features. Like Brooklyn, I am a huge fan of Lewis Carroll and all things Alice and was excited to see that ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND was the book featured in ONCE UPON A SPINE. While I was thrilled to learn new facts, I was unfamiliar with the Suppressed ALICE, I was disappointed that more attention wasn't given to the book. That being said, more details about it wouldn't have moved the plot along so weren't really necessary, but the book nerd in me still wanted more.

The mix of characters in ONCE UPON A SPINE is brilliant. The meeting of Brooklyn and Derek's parents is a delight and it's wonderful to see the trio of couples so compatible, especially compared to the romantic relationships between the other characters in the book.

ONCE UPON A SPINE is a fine entry in the Bibliophile Mystery series that celebrates relationships while providing an engaging well plotted mystery.

Currently Reading...

I'm currently reading Murder Made to Order by Lena Gregory. This book is the second in the All-Day Breakfast Café Mystery series and was released yesterday!

Gia Morelli left New York for Florida and a new start in life. Now she's debating that decision. While she's made some good friends, Gia is still uncomfortable, OK down right scared, of the critters that also live in her world. But worse than the critters are some of the people. The town council is demanding that Gia close her All Day Breakfast Café saying that the property was never zoned commercial. Wondering if that's a sign she should just return to New York, Gia stumbles upon the body of the council's president. Now she's embroiled in another murder. Did the councilwoman's murder have something to do with the zoning laws? Could the Captain be involved? What's really going on between him and Hunt? Are Maybelle's threats serious, or is she just blowing smoke? Gia will have to dig deep to save her café and perhaps her own life.

A Poison by Punctuation Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Kellye Kaye to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Kellye writes the Chalkboard Outlines Mystery series. Poison by Punctuation is the second book in the series.

Kathy: Emma Lovett is a high school teacher. Have you ever wanted to be a teacher? What grade would be your preference?

KK: Haha I am actually a high school teacher by initial career choice. I taught high school English and Drama for almost 20 years, and then when we moved to California in 2011, I had the amazing opportunity to be a stay-at-home parent and now a writer! High school was ALWAYS my preference. I never taught middle school, and since I’ve now been volunteering in all grades during my sons’ elementary school careers, it’s become obvious to me that high school was the right choice!

Kathy: Your second Chalkboard Outlines mystery in entitled Poison by Punctuation. Are a stickler for proper grammar and punctuation?

KK: Depends on the situation. If you are giving me a written document, then I will say heck yeah—everyone has the ability to proofread their work or ask someone who knows the rules to help. There’s no excuse, especially when one can duck their head into any public library and use a computer or a style book for free. If it’s just a note, then no. If it’s a text, then no. If you’re SPEAKING to me, the answer is no there as well, although I do have a few pet peeves. Ending a sentence with ‘at’ is a big one. Mispronouncing the word ‘nuclear’ is another one, although I guess that’s more elocution than grammar. Oh, yeah, speaking of elocution pet peeves—WHY DOES EVERYONE ON TELEVISION OR IN FILM OR IN PUBLIC USE THE WORD ‘PATRONIZE’ incorrectly? Seriously, I think that is something a director should look up! You paytronize an establishment. You do not paytronize a person by speaking in a condescending way to them—that’s paaaatronize with a short ‘a’ sound. It drives me bonkers! I should start a movement. Or at least make a bumper sticker.
Sheesh. I do laugh every time I see that Tshirt—“I am silently correcting your grammar.”—though. I can’t help it.

Kathy: Speaking of punctuation, what are your thoughts about the Oxford Comma? Fair warning I am staunchly in the Oxford Comma or die camp!

KK: Bumper sticker #2: OXFORD COMMA OR DIE! I’ve always felt strongly about the oxford comma, to the point where I’ve gotten into arguments with my magazine editors because they, (along with the Chicago stylebook, I guess?) have now done away with it. I lost the argument, but I tried . . .  I love that deadly koala joke though, right? He eats shoots and leaves, or assassin koala eats, shoots, and leaves. I love it.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

KK: Cozies are more about character rapport than murder, and so am I. They always have a happy ending, and those are necessary for my emotional welfare. Plus, who doesn’t love anything made famous by Angela Lansbury, I ask you!?!

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

KK: My debut Young Adult Paranormal—Down in the Belly of the Whale—was released by Aionios Books on May 5. I have a non-fiction sort of memoir/self-help book called The A or B Principle-Unraveling the Chaos of Chronic Illness through Choice, that hasn’t been published yet. I’m looking for an agent.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

KK: Emma Lovett flees the South because of a philandering husband, and embarks on a new career teaching high school English in the Mountain West. She meets a sophisticated colleague named Leslie Parker, and their love for the language unites them. Then, Emma finds a body, and the ladies discover another mutual love—solving murders.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

KK: Emma and Leslie are both closest to my heart. I mean, all my teacher or writer characters are combinations of me and all the other teachers and writers I know, but these two. . . these two seem to have the most fun and experience the most intense emotions of all the characters in the series.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

KK: I just thought high school and all of its quirky characters was the perfect backdrop for someone to kill someone. I mean, right?!? 😊

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

KK: I just love stories so much, I love reading them and I have so many stories in my head. SO MANY. I’d just like to share mine with some other people too.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

KK: I need more than 4—okay? Please? William Shakespeare. Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, John Steinbeck, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Harlan Coben, Liane Moriarity, Louise Penny, Lee Child, Jonathan Kellerman

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

KK: Fredrik Backman My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry. He’s the writer of A Man Called Ove—one of my favorites! This one is good so far, too.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

KK: Haha besides reading and writing, you mean? I love anything to do with the arts and live performances of the arts—plays, musicals, concerts (our last concert was Metallica, our last musical was . . . oh, shoot, I’m not sure . . . maybe Guys and Dolls? I also like ballroom dancing and karaoke. And watching my little boys play baseball, basketball and soccer.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

KK: Simple Mills almond crackers, Larabars, chocolate of any kind, fuji apples

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

KK: I’m currently working on #3 in the Chalkboard Outlines series, and I’m working on a first draft of the first book in a YA series called The Meld.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

KK: I just love the stories, and the characters, so much. They feel so real to me. I have to be a writer, or my head might explode! 😊

About the Author

“Kelley Kaye” taught High School English and Drama since 1992 in California, then Colorado and now Cali again, but her love for storytelling dates back to creating captions in her high school yearbook.
