Vanishing into the 100% Dark - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Chloe to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Chloe on the pages of VANISHING INTO THE 100% DARK by Amber Royer. This book is the eighth in the Bean to Bar Mystery series and was released last week.

OMG, you guys, I’m actually in Japan! And it’s amazing! I just saw an early cherry blossom. You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to see that. Probably half of the seventeen years I have spent on this Earth, ever since I saw Your Lie in April. I can’t entirely recommend it, since the ending totally broke me, but some of the best anime seem to have the saddest endings.

Anyway, thanks for tuning in last week when I was a guest on Reformed Jerk Cat, my mom’s YouTube channel mostly about my stupid jerky cat that got himself picked up by a very nice lady who taught him manners. I know, right.

Here on my channel, in case you’re new, it’s mostly restaurant reviews, travel tips and short films put together by me and my friends. Joey has gotten into Lego stop motion videos, so look forward to some of those, with me as the voice of Lovely Lillian.

But let me tell you how I wound up in Japan. You remember the chocolate shop lady? The one who saved me – and a bunch of other people including Hudson Nolan -- a few months ago when we were trapped in a hotel in Galveston? Well, Hudson himself got her invited to a chocolate festival here in Tokyo. AND, more importantly, he said we could do a collab video between me, Chloe of Chloe Creates and his main channel, TokyoGoGo. You simply cannot fathom how excited I am.

Hudson also told me about a movie being filmed near here. I’m not supposed to share any of the details, but I will say – there’s a very good chance I can work my way into being on screen. Y’all know how persuasive I am. Send positive thoughts. You know you want to see your girl on the big screen.

But first, I have to do something with all of these books. You see, Mrs. Koerber has a collection of books back at her chocolate shop. They’re memorabilia from the mystery cases she’s helped solve. Each one has somehow contained a clue, or been connected to someone or otherwise helped her solve a specific mystery. And a whole bunch of true crime and mystery fiction aficionados have all showed up at the chocolate festival, to give her one of their favorite books. Someone set up a feed, so I’ve been watching it happen in real time, even though I’ve been sitting here with one of Mrs. Koerber’s friends, drinking tea. I managed to sneak out here to stream when my substitute chaperone went to the bathroom.

I’ve never seen Mrs. Koerber be superstitious about anything else – but she freaked out over the books. Now she’s convinced someone’s going to be less alive. If I want her to be okay with me being in the movie, I need her to be in a better mood. But first, I need to get the part. I’ll pick up streaming once I’m inside the building. I promise, Hudson, it will just be me gloating about getting a part in a movie. Nothing recognizable that you will have to worry about, I double pinkie promise.

***

Okay – I’m picking up recording from a conference room inside the movie studio. I’m in here waiting for the director to come interview me, and there’s not enough signal inside here to stream. I’m getting a little bored, honestly.

I wish there was someone else on this trip remotely near my age. Mrs. Koerber and Mrs. Nash are both older than my Aunt Pauline. They’re both gooey over their respective boyfriends, and I’m not sure how to deal with that, considering they’re all in their thirties – and I don’t have any current romantic prospects of my own. Y’all know what happened with the last guy I dated. I’m not eager to get my heart stomped on again. Unless I meet a really good guy, it’s book boyfriends only for me, and right now that’s Ryan from Switch the Flip. Have you read it? I don’t want to give too many spoilers, but man, I did not see that ending coming.

Guys. Y’all. I heard a bunch of commotion in the hallway. I’m not sure if the camera picked it up or not. And get this. I went to go see if everything is okay – and I’m locked in. I’m sure everything’s fine. It sounded like maybe the janitor knocked over a trashcan out there or something. Only – what if it’s not?

***

I’m sorry I screamed in the recording. This cute little cat wound its way around my leg, and I didn’t know what it was. I thought – let me not think that again. A shiver just went down my spine. But surely that’s just because I’m stuck in here without a phone signal. No way to call out, and I’m in a locked room. Everything is probably fine, and there was just a commotion on set as part of the movie. That makes the most sense. After all, I’m waiting in here to talk to the director when there’s a break. Probably, the door got locked by accident, and someone will realize soon that I’m still in here. Only – what if it wasn’t an accident?

***

Y’all. The door is opening. I told you everything is going to be okay.

Bean to chocolate maker Felicity Koerber has been invited to be part of a chocolate festival in Tokyo. It’s a big deal for a Texas gal with a chocolate shop on Galveston’s historic Strand, so a whole group of her friends come along to support her. It’s intimidating enough to be giving a class on chocolate making with the help of a translator – she also stumbles across the scene of a murder, where a quirky group of international actors and stunt performers are making a monster movie. Felicity has already solved half a dozen murders back in Texas, so at this point her friends basically expect her to get involved – even before the young media influencer in Felicity’s group becomes the main suspect. Felicity has taken on the role of chaperone for Chloe, so she can’t imagine how she could explain what went wrong to the girl’s mother. Which gives her even more motivation to figure out the real killer.

In the meantime, things get complicated at the chocolate festival when a rival chocolate maker tries to get her disqualified from the awards competition – and claims that her amateur sleuth status is bringing undesirables into the festival. And things are even more complicated as the stress of being in an unfamiliar place brings out secrets about Felicity’s friends – and her fiancé.

A Chocolate is Announced - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Cheeseburger the Ferret to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Cheeseburger on the pages of A Chocolate is Announced by Amber Royer. This book is the seventh in the Bean to Bar Mystery series and was released last week.

Hi! I’m a ferret. I love collecting things. My name is Cheeseburger -- or at least that’s what my adoptive Mommy named me. But she’s a human, and she has no idea that I already had a name – Lady Tiffany of the Grange, XVI. I know this because the little girl who lived in the house where I was born whispered it into my ear, just as she had whispered it to my mother and her mother before her. She used to tell me and my siblings about a long line of Ferrets, traced all the way back to Europe, which is a faraway land across the sea. It was a romantic life, which only occasionally involved wearing a tutu and trying to escape a chair at an imaginary tea party, a life which came to an abrupt end when my siblings and I were separated and taken into different households.

It was lonely at first, but my new Mommy spends a lot of time with me. It’s almost like having another ferret close by – almost, but not quite. I try to fill that void by collecting things. My human mom wears earrings, which are often made of big sparkly rocks, or dangly feathers, or big wooden beads. Call me a girly girl, but I love to pile them up and sit on them. Sometimes, Mommy or Dad will find my precious earrings and “tidy” them up. Which is heartbreaking. The only consolation is that I get to start all over again.

Mommy sometimes takes me with her when she travels. She’s a food critic, and she often comes home or back to wherever we’re staying, and she smells amazing. Sometimes she even brings me a bit of meat leftover from her meal. We ferrets were made to exist on meat, and getting it freshly cooked connects me to my ancestors. Of course, they were sadly forced to eat meat raw, as we were domesticated mainly to hunt rodents. Which benefited both us and the humans. And then, of course, we were also used to hunt rabbits. Speaking of which.

This time Mommy has taken me and Dad to a hotel in Galveston, Texas, a nearby land that feels sticky and smells like salt. And the whole lobby of the place smells like rabbit. Which is unusual for a hotel. There’s a lady here who also smells like rabbit – but she also smells like candy – which I’m not allowed to eat – and like flowers. I could tell just from looking at her that she’s a kind human, so I ran over to her and begged her to hold me. She did!

But then something happened at the hotel, something that smells bad in all the wrong ways – like death. I think Mommy’s in trouble, because she knew the guy who died – and there’s something negative between them, something that ties into the sadness Mommy sometimes exudes. I can smell that too. When she’s feeling that lonely sad, she tends to cuddle me and give me treats. Which is great for me. And I think it makes her feel better too.

But the kind lady who smells like rabbits also helps set things right when death has entered her world. Apparently, this has happened a number of times. Humans in the hotel keep calling her Felicity, and one of them keeps saying she’s a mega murder magnet. (Her exploits have been recorded in the Bean to Bar Mysteries series. But the human called Ash, who is here at the hotel, also has a podcast going into detail about the cases she’s solved.)

Murder is a concept I only vaguely understand. I don’t know why it is so important to them to know why someone died. It happened. You move on, right? But humans don’t do that. Mommy can’t do that. I can feel a tinge of sadness in Felicity too, but it’s more muted, almost healed. But maybe that’s why she can understand what Mommy is going through, wants to help. Which makes me happy to be around both of them.

One thing I’m worried about is that there is a dog staying in this hotel, though the rabbit seems to have left. Who knows? Maybe it’s why the rabbit left. People are being careful to keep the dog away from me, but I still have a nervous edge. I’ve started collecting things again, and storing them in a hiding spot I doubt anyone will ever find. At least not before it’s time for us to leave.

I know Felicity and the others are looking for something, but I have no understanding of what. I keep hearing the word will. Which is part of a verb, right? Will walk. Will eat. Will sniff. I wish I could help. But I really feel lost. Oh well, maybe somebody needs some cuddles.

It’s all supposed to be perfectly random – only, Felicity starts to uncover connections between her guests. When one of them winds up murdered, Felicity has to keep her aunt from becoming the main suspect. The killer is very clearly calling Felicity out, leaving clues that mean little to anyone other than her. But that doesn’t narrow down the suspect pool. Her guests are there because they love the true crime podcast she’s been featured on. And she can’t decide whether the killer wants her to catch them – or just wants to taunt her. Meanwhile, Felicity is also playing host to her future in-laws and discovers that her fiancé’s sister, who is also a cop, is very competitive. Can Felicity hold her own and make a good impression, while keeping her business together and her aunt out of jail? And can Felicity solve it in time to protect the people she cares about from becoming additional victims? Satchmo the retired police dog turned therapy dog returns to help her sniff out a few clues, and one of the guests brings along a ferret named Cheeseburger, who keeps showing up in the most unexpected places.

Something Borrowed, Something 90% Dark - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Aunt Naomi to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Aunt Naomi on the pages of the Bean to Bar Mystery series by Amber Royer. Something Borrowed, Something 90% Dark is the sixth book in the series and is being released today!

5 Reasons my Niece Should Quit Being an Amateur Sleuth . . . and 1 Reason She Shouldn’t!

Hi! I’m Felicity Koerber’s Aunt Naomi. I’m a house flipper, currently flipping a boutique hotel on the beautiful island of Galveston, Texas. Felicity has taken a suite in the hotel, which is only appropriate since she is helping me finance the project, with money from the settlement after her husband’s death. Felicity had come a long way in moving forward in life, after moving home to Galveston and starting a chocolate business. She even has two love interests now for a second-chance romance – Arlo, who was her first boyfriend, back in high school. He’s now a cop. Oddly, they reconnected after one of Felicity’s employees was murdered at her shop’s Grand Opening, and he was assigned the case. The other one, Logan, was once her bodyguard – long story, but is now her business partner. My main problem with all of this is that they both keep getting Felicity caught up in murder investigations. I can see the appeal. I even had a try at being an amateur sleuth myself, back during that first case, but I realized quickly that it was not for me – and shouldn’t be for Felicity – for the following reasons.

5. It’s dangerous! Felicity has been threatened and nearly killed multiple times while trying to solve mysteries. And let’s not even talk about the time she and her friends got locked in a shipping container and left with the expectation that they’d run out of air. That had been a narrow escape! And recently, with the fire at her shop. Felicity has asthma – even though she’s undergone that experimental treatment to get rid of it. Bad air conditions still trigger her symptoms. But she seems willing to risk it to stop murderers.

4. It gives her a weird reputation. My niece moved back to Galveston to open a craft chocolate business. She wanted to travel the world to meet chocolate farmers, and to be known for producing excellent chocolate. And I know she wants to make friends in the community, here on the island, and to reconnect with people she knew before she and Kevin – her late husband – moved to Seattle. But now she’s “That Girl”. The one who always seems to wind up in the middle of murder investigations. I’ve heard people say they don’t want to get too close to her, for fear they’ll be next.

3. It takes a lot of time. Felicity has been trying to grow her business. And I’ll admit that by taking on extra employees, she has been able to keep up so far. Logan has even become her business partner, which was a big deal, because the chocolate shop was originally Felicity and Kevin’s dream for after he retired, which he didn’t live long enough to do. Letting go of part of that to share her business was a big benchmark in her rebuilding her life. But I would hate for her to lose sight of her dream entirely, chasing murderers to bring justice to people who don’t even stick around to thank her.

2. It has to be taking a mental toll. My niece is one of the sweetest people I know. I mean, she has flaws just like anyone. And yes, she may have not taken into account what other people are feeling at times, like with her breakup all those years ago with Arlo, or the misunderstandings she had with the bookstore owner last year. But she had a genuinely good heart and she’s always sorry for making missteps. And now she’s been seeing all these dead bodies. At least one of the murders, I know, she actually saw happen. As far as I know, she isn’t displaying symptoms of PTSD, and so far she seems able to process everything that has happened, but all of this has to be adding up mentally.

1. It makes ME worry. Every time Felicity comes home late, or when I hear an unfamiliar noise in the hotel. (Who am I kidding? This is a really old building. There are ALWAYS unfamiliar noises.) But every time something happens, I worry that someone is trying to silence Felicity for getting involved in their business. I’m getting close to finished with the hotel. But when it’s ready to flip, I don’t want to lose Felicity. I think she’s ready to get her own place, if she loses the privacy of having a suite. She isn’t going to want a spare room in whatever house I flip next. My husband works offshore, so I don’t know if I’m ready to lose her company. And if she isn’t living here – I’m going to worry about her that much more.

So, you see, I have laid out a reasonable case on why Felicity should quit sleuthing and focus on her chocolate business and her relationships. Only – I can’t see her doing that and being happy.

There’s only one reason I have for her continuing to be an amateur sleuth, but it’s a doozie.

1. She’s good at it. Felicity seems to empathize with people well, and they open up and talk to her in ways they wouldn’t talk to say Arlo in his official capacity. She is able to put together clues in a way I would probably miss. And it’s because she cares about people that she feels like she HAS to step in where needed. Take the events that have been unfolding over the last couple of days. Her friend Tiff – who is also my friend, since Tiff has been helping with the hotel flip and we’ve started hanging out together after – has been accused of murdering a childhood friend. That friend breezed into town, stole a few things, and wound up dead at an open house Tiff was hosting. Tiff’s main job is as a real estate agent. But you don’t see me trying to solve the murder. Yet, Felicity can’t help but try.

A Study in Chocolate - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Camille Marchetti to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Camille on the pages of the Bean to Bar Mystery series by Amber Royer. A Study in Chocolate is the fifth book in the series and was released this past week.

Hi Everyone! I’m Felicity’s mom, Camille Marchetti. Felicity is the protagonist of the Bean to Bar Mysteries. The fifth book, A Study in Chocolate, just came out – and I finally get time on the page. Can you believe it has taken five books for my daughter to share page space with me – or to let me do one of those posts? Who knows her better than I do, after all?

I know sometimes I get carried away, and tend to take over projects – but trust me, I’m not about to get involved with Felicity’s murder-solving hobby. For one thing, getting involved in matters best left to the police is dangerous, and I keep telling Felicity this needs to stop. For another, puzzles have never been my thing. I can organize and work through real-world problems with sheer determination, coffee and staying power. But you can’t do that with a puzzle. The solution stays just as elusive.

Felicity gets her out-of-the-box thinking style from her father. That’s not always a good thing. Felicity had a thriving physical therapy practice in Seattle, but after her husband died, she made the rash decision to quit her practice and become a craft chocolate maker. I miss my late son-in-law too, but opening a small business is risky, and it is hardly a reasonable response after all the time Felicity spent in school. At the same time, her shop seems to be doing well – is in fact expanding. I can be ambivalent about everything she threw away, and at the same time proud of what she’s accomplishing. It’s my right, as a mother.

I just can’t understand how my daughter keeps winding up involved in solving murders. My husband Rob says she’s an amateur sleuth, so with the energy she’s putting out in the universe, mysterious things are going to just keep happening. I told him that is ridiculous. There’s no such thing as a real-life amateur sleuth. That’s just something for the Hardy Boys or Veronica Mars.

This time, Felicity has gotten involved in the death of an art collector who just recently moved to Galveston, Texas, and bought a historic home not far away from Greetings and Felicitations, my daughter’s shop. Apparently, a book mysteriously showed up on the bookcase where she sells travel books. It was a rare edition of a Sherlock Holmes novel, and somehow – I’m not clear on the details – it was a challenge for Felicity to solve the art guy’s murder before it happened. She failed at doing that – and now she’s convinced that someone else is going to die, just to keep her motivated.

I had to bite my tongue to keep from telling her that this is her own fault, for not letting the police handle those other cases. But how can you criticize, when she seriously believes someone’s life is at stake? I hope she’ll be careful, and that she’ll stay close to her business partner, who used to be a bodyguard, or to her ex, who’s a cop. Although, that could lead to all different kinds of trouble.

Anyway, don’t forget the moms out there of all your favorite protagonists. We’re over here, biting our nails, hoping everything comes out right in the end!

Print length: ‎ 289 pages

Felicity Koerber’s bean to bar chocolate shop on Galveston’s historic Strand is expanding, as it has become a gathering spot for the community, despite having been the scene of multiple murders. Artists she met while doing a chocolate sculpture are now working out of the shop. So when Felicity is invited to tea by an eccentric art collector, she’s intrigued, especially when she gets asked to pose for a portrait done with chocolate on chocolate. Only, where there is a murder the next day at the same historic house where the tea was held, one of Felicity’s artist friends becomes the main suspect.

When the killer threatens that, unless Felicity unravels the murder, one of her two love interests will be the next victim, she finds herself unwittingly at the center of a puzzle, with a Sherlock Holmes obsessed murderer who wants to be the next Moriarty – and wants to cast Felicity as Sherlock.

Felicity starts finding unexpected connects between her friends and acquaintances, and has to deal with the idea that someone who knows her is a murderer. At the same time, she has to keep her business running, despite construction dust and unruly customers – and an unexpected order for thousands of truffles.
