Seams Like the Pefect Crime - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to allow Anastasia Pollack to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Anastasia on the pages of the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series by Lois Winston. Seams Like the Perfect Crime is the fourteenth book in the series and was released last week.

My name is Anastasia Pollack, reluctant amateur sleuth of the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries by author Lois Winston. Sometimes my head spins when I think about the changes that have occurred in my life over the last two years. Not so long ago, I was living the American Dream with my husband, two great kids, a home in the suburbs, and a job I loved as crafts editor of a women’s magazine.

The one fly in the ointment was my cantankerous communist mother-in-law who was living with us while she recuperated from a hit-and-run, but Karl, my husband, had assured me her stay was temporary. He didn’t want her in our home any more than I did.

Then Karl dropped dead in Las Vegas, and life has never been the same. I felt like such a clichĂ©—the clueless wife who knew nothing of her husband’s affair. Only Karl’s affair had been with Lady Luck, and his luck had run out. He left me, not only permanently stuck with his mother but also his loan shark, having gambled away everything—including money we didn’t have. The loan shark didn’t care, which I’ve since learned is SOP—standard operating procedure—for loan sharks. Being a Jersey girl, you’d think I would have known that.

You might also think all the above would be enough of a triple whammy for any clueless wife, right? Far from it. My author saw to that, starting with the day I returned to work after Karl’s funeral and discovered the dead body of our fashion editor glue gunned to my desk chair. Suddenly, I found myself with a second career as a reluctant amateur sleuth. It was either that or wind up railroaded for a murder I didn’t commit.

You know the old saying, if you want something done and done right, do it yourself? I’ve learned the hard way that “most likely suspect” and “actual killer” are often far from one and the same. However, too often law enforcement zeroes in on the former without digging further to find the latter. Since that first murder, there have been so many more dead bodies that I’ve lost count. I’ve also nearly lost my own life on several occasions.

However, life has improved significantly since Lois first introduced me in Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun. Much of that has to do with photojournalist (and possible spy), Zachary Barnes. We first met when I rented the apartment above our detached garage to him. No spoilers here, but let’s just say, in the ensuing books in the series our relationship has progressed well beyond the renter/landlady stage.

However, one thing hasn’t changed. The dead bodies keep coming. In Seams Like the Perfect Crime, the fourteenth book in the series, one occurs right across the street from us. Thanks to my author, I get sucked into the investigation, even though I never even met the guy. He’d only moved in three days earlier.

I’m still trying to figure out what Lois Winston has against me. I asked her once. She said it wasn’t personal and handed me some nonsense, about the need for goals, motivations, and conflict in fiction. When I suggested she’d given me plenty without the addition of more dead bodies, she rolled her eyes.

When staffing shortages continue to hamper the Union County homicide squad, Detective Sam Spader once again turns to his secret weapon, reluctant amateur sleuth Anastasia Pollack. How can she and husband Zack Barnes refuse when the victim is their new neighbor?

Revolutionary War reenactor Barry Sumner had the odd habit of spending hours mowing a small patch of packed dirt and weeds until his mower ran out of gas. He’d then guzzle beer on his front porch until he passed out. That’s where Anastasia’s son Nick discovers his body three days after the victim and his family moved into the newly built mini-McMansion across the street.

After a melee breaks out at the viewing, Spader zeroes in on the widow as his prime suspect. However, Anastasia has her doubts. There are other possible suspects, including a woman who’d had an affair with the victim, his ex-wife, the man overseeing the widow’s trust fund, a drug dealer, and the reenactors who were blackmailing the widow and victim.

When another reenactor is murdered, Spader suspects they’re dealing with a serial killer, but Anastasia wonders if the killer is attempting to misdirect the investigation. As she narrows down the suspects, will she jeopardize her own life to learn the truth?

About Lois Winston

USA Today and Amazon bestselling author Lois Winston began her award-winning writing career with Talk Gertie to Me, a humorous fish-out-of-water novel about a small-town girl going off to the big city and the mother who had other ideas. That was followed by the romantic suspense Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception.

Then Lois’s writing segued unexpectedly into the world of humorous amateur sleuth mysteries, thanks to a conversation her agent had with an editor looking for craft-themed mysteries. In her day job, Lois was an award-winning craft and needlework designer, and although she’d never written a mystery—or had even thought about writing a mystery—her agent decided she was the perfect person to pen a series for this editor.

Thus, was born the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, which Kirkus Reviews dubbed “North Jersey’s more mature answer to Stephanie Plum.” The series now includes fourteen novels and three novellas. Lois also writes the Empty Nest Mysteries and has written several standalone mystery novellas. Other publishing credits include romance, chick lit, and romantic suspense novels, a series of romance short stories, a children’s chapter book, and a nonfiction book on writing, inspired by her twelve years working as an associate at a literary agency.

A Crafty Collage of Crime - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm happy to allow Anastasia Pollack to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Anastasia on the pages of the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series. A Crafty Collage of Crime is the twelfth book in the series and was released last month.

The Characters Strike Back
By Anastasia Pollack

Sometimes I wish I could get together with my fellow cozy mystery sleuths. It’s not easy living in a vacuum, not knowing if other fictional cozy sleuths deal with the same sort of problems that I have with Lois Winston. She’s my author, and to date, she’s written twelve novels and three novellas about me. And every single one of them has put my life in jeopardy!

How do other fictional sleuths feel about these puppet master writers pulling their strings and forcing them to put their lives on the line to satisfy the appetites of cozy mystery readers? I have a feeling we’re all of a like mind on this.

I’m sure our writers care about us. After all, we’re the protagonists of their books. You’d think for that reason alone, they’d want to protect us.

I have this recurring dream that what I think is my life, is really a nightmare. Eventually, I’ll wake up to find my author never segued from writing romance to writing cozy mysteries, and that I’m really the heroine of one of her romance novels. But then I wake up and find myself plucked into the middle of Lois’s next mystery where I’m stumbling over yet another dead body.

I think we fictional sleuths need a support group. Or better yet, a union. I wonder how all those writers would feel if we amateur sleuths suddenly grabbed picket signs and went out on strike. We should demand to set up some rules that our authors have to abide by.

In a perfect world, we could do away with stumbling over dead bodies, but I doubt our authors would ever agree to that. After all, dead bodies are their bread and butter. There are other crimes—kidnapping, embezzlement, harassment, fraud, armed robbery—but cozy readers are conditioned to expect dead bodies, even when the mystery centers around other crimes. This is the case in A Crafty Collage of Crime, the latest Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery. After all, there’s got to be a reason the bad guy kills. It’s never just for the thrill of it. Serial killers belong in an entirely different genre. I suppose I should be happy Lois isn’t writing suspense or thrillers.

Of course, this is all a pipedream. I’m at the mercy of my author, as is every other cozy amateur sleuth every written. But a girl—even a fictitious one—can dream, can’t she?

Wherever crafts editor and reluctant amateur sleuth Anastasia Pollack goes, murder and mayhem follow. Her honeymoon is no exception. She and new husband, photojournalist (and possible spy) Zachary Barnes, are enjoying a walk in the Tennessee woods when they stumble upon a body on the side of a creek. The dead man is the husband of one of the three sisters who own the winery and guest cottages where Anastasia and Zack are vacationing.

When the local sheriff sets his sights on the widow as the prime suspect, her sisters close ranks around her. The three siblings are true-crime junkies, and thanks to a podcaster who has produced an unauthorized series about her, Anastasia’s reputation for solving murders has preceded her to the bucolic hamlet. The sisters plead for her help in finding the real killer. As Anastasia learns more about the women and their business, a host of suspects emerge, including several relatives, a relentless land developer, and even the sisters themselves.

Meanwhile, Anastasia becomes obsessed with discovering the podcaster’s identity. Along with knowing about Anastasia’s life as a reluctant amateur sleuth, the podcaster has divulged details of Anastasia’s personal life. Someone has betrayed Anastasia’s trust, and she’s out to discover the identity of the culprit.

Romancing the Mystery - A Sew Deadly Cruise Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm happy to allow Lois Winston to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. Lois writes the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries. A Sew Deadly Cruise is the ninth book in the series and was released October 1, 2020.

Romancing the Mystery
By Lois Winston

Agatha Christie didn’t believe in mixing romance with mystery, even though (little known fact) she wrote a handful of romances along with her many mysteries. Much has changed in cozy and amateur sleuth mysteries since Dame Agatha’s day. Many authors now add romance to their sleuth’s lives. Some even dare to leave the bedroom door open a crack.

Once upon a time I wrote books that ended with the hero and heroine always winding up either married or planning to wed by the end of the book. My romance writing days ended once Anastasia Pollack, the reluctant amateur sleuth of my eponymous Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, took over my life. These days you’ll find my laptop planted firmly in the mystery world. However, Anastasia is an extremely demanding protagonist, and in order gain her cooperation, I had to enter into negotiations with her.

When I made the move from romance to mystery, I had to switch up my writing style. Romances are character driven. The stories center round a hero and heroine. Mysteries are plot driven. They don’t have heroes and heroines. They have protagonists, whether amateur or professional sleuths, and those protagonists may or may not have a love interest.

Even if there is a love interest, in the traditional cozy the love story plays second or third fiddle to the mystery. Sometimes the love interest is mostly off-camera, only referred to occasionally by the protagonist. A mystery is first and foremost all about the sleuth finding out whodunit. Of course, that doesn’t mean that the characters aren’t fully developed in mysteries. No one wants to read about cardboard characters, no matter what genre.

When Anastasia’s husband permanently cashed in his chips at a roulette table in Las Vegas, her comfortable middle-class life crapped out. Suddenly, she found herself juggling two teenage sons, a mountain of debt, a communist mother-in-law, and her dead husband’s loan shark. Add to that a mother who claims descent from Russian nobility; a communist French bulldog, a haughty Persian cat, and Ralph, the Shakespeare-quoting parrot. Toss them all into one small suburban ranch house, and you’ve got chaos and conflict galore. And that’s all before Anastasia suddenly finds herself tripping over dead bodies!

Did I mention I write humorous amateur sleuth mysteries?

If I was going to write a multi-book series featuring the same characters, I needed to give Anastasia a character arc over the course of the series. I wanted her to deal with internal, as well as external, conflicts and experience emotional growth as the series progressed. That’s where her dysfunctional family and their assorted baggage come in. But right from the start Anastasia rebelled, refusing to go along with what I wrote. I needed to dangle a carrot in front of her.

What better way to do this than to turn to my romance roots? Enter Zachary Barnes. I introduced him in the first book when he rents the apartment over Anastasia’s garage. He claims he’s a photojournalist. But is he? Anastasia starts suspecting the photojournalism is cover for a more covert career. Is Zack really a spy? So far neither Anastasia nor my readers have learned the answer to that question, but they both learn a bit more about Zack’s background in A Sew Deadly Cruise, the ninth and latest book in the series.

Zack also looks like someone dumped the genetic components of Pierce Brosnan, George Clooney, Patrick Dempsey, and Antonio Banderas into a pan and baked up the epitome of male perfection. Anastasia isn’t sure what Zack sees in her, but she’s not questioning his motives. Or mine. With this gift I’ve given her, she’s decided to cooperate--somewhat. She’s definitely more reluctant amateur sleuth than your average nosey Nellie amateur sleuth, but life is all about compromise, right?

Handmade Ho-Ho Homicide - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Lois Winston back to Cozy Up With Kathy. Lois writes the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series. Handmade Ho-Ho Homicide is the eighth book in the series and was released earlier this month.

Kathy: In Handmade Ho-Ho Homicide Ira Pollack has blinged out Anastasia's home with enough Christmas lights to rival Rockefeller Center. Do you go all out decorating your home for the holidays or are you more subdued?

LW: I’ve always lived by the design motto that “less is more.” Outside we string lights around our porch and hang a wreath on the front door. Inside, in addition to the tree, we string lights and garland on the mantle, where we also place our collection of nutcrackers. I also display various other Christmas dĂ©cor that I’ve either been gifted, collected, or crafted over the years.

Kathy: Inflatable characters play a big part in the story. I admit I have never used any. Do you?

LW: No, they’re extremely expensive and noisy. But even if they weren’t, when they’re turned off during the day, all those “dead” characters lying around in the snow really creep me out.

Kathy: I turn on my outside lights the day after Thanksgiving and have my timers set from dawn to dusk. What about you?

LW: We also usually decorate a day or so after Thanksgiving and use timers for the lights, but my husband insists on the lights turning off at 11pm.

Kathy: You include some Christmas craft projects with the mystery. Do you create Christmas crafts yourself?

LW: I’d say that at least 75% of the ornaments on our tree are handmade—either by me or some of my craftier friends. I also have a cross stitched Nativity I set up on our sofa table and swap out the toss pillows for cross stitched ones.

Kathy: I love sending and receiving Christmas cards. Do you mail out real cards? Are they homemade or store bought?

LW: I still mail out Christmas cards and love receiving them, especially from friends and relatives we rarely get a chance to see. I don’t craft my own cards; however, the crafts I include in Handmade Ho-Ho Homicide are made by repurposing Christmas cards that are too pretty to stick in the recycling bin come January.

Kathy: Was there a specific inspiration for this story?

LW: Most of my plot ideas are inspired by actual events. Last year I saw numerous news stories about neighbors angry over their quiet streets being turned into a carnival atmosphere when a neighbor transformed his home into an extravagant display for the holidays. Ira was exactly the type of person who would go overboard in this way to impress his kids. As for the murder, it was inspired by an actual murder that took place in New Jersey last year. I can’t say more about that without giving away spoilers, though.

Kathy: Are you able to share any future plans for Anastasia?

LW: Anastasia’s next adventure will take place on a cruise ship. As I write this, I’m currently on a cruise doing research.

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

LW: Right now I’m concentrating on my Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series, but eventually I hope to write another book in my Empty Nest Mystery series. I think I first need to find a way to clone myself or do without sleep. Anyone have any suggestions?

Two and a half weeks ago magazine crafts editor Anastasia Pollack arrived home to find Ira Pollack, her half-brother-in-law, had blinged out her home with enough Christmas lights to rival Rockefeller Center. Now he’s crammed her small yard with enormous cavorting inflatable characters. She and photojournalist boyfriend (and possible spy) Zack Barnes pack up the unwanted lawn decorations to return to Ira. They arrive to find his yard the scene of an over-the-top Christmas extravaganza. His neighbors are not happy with the animatronics, laser light show, and blaring music creating traffic jams on their normally quiet street. One of them expresses his displeasure with his fists before running off.
In the excitement, the deflated lawn ornaments are never returned to Ira. The next morning Anastasia once again heads to his house before work to drop them off. When she arrives, she discovers Ira’s attacker dead in Santa’s sleigh. Ira becomes the prime suspect in the man’s murder and begs Anastasia to help clear his name. But Anastasia has promised her sons she’ll keep her nose out of police business. What’s a reluctant amateur sleuth to do?

A Drop Dead Ornaments Interview & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Lois Winston back to the blog today. Lois writes the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery series. Drop Dead Ornaments is the seventh book in the series and was released last week.

Kathy: In Drop Dead Ornaments the high school seniors have chosen to raise money for the county food bank as a community service project. Do you help out or donate to your food bank?

LW: I spearheaded and edited Bake, Love, Write: 105 Authors Share Dessert Recipes and Advice on Love and Writing. A percentage of the profits were donated to our county food bank.

Kathy: Why are food banks so important?

LW: Many of our citizens live on limited, fixed incomes or below the poverty level. Making ends meet often means skipping meals and not meeting nutritional needs, which can lead to health issues. Food banks are a way of insuring our most vulnerable citizens have more healthful diets.

Kathy: I love Christmas ornaments. Do you make your own, like Anastasia?

LW: Absolutely! After all, like Anastasia, I’m also a crafts designer. However, my tree does include purchased ornaments that were gifts from other people.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite ornament?

LW: I have several. They were ornaments my sons made in grade school. The sentimental value of these ornaments far outweighs the rudimentary workmanship.

Kathy: Was there a specific inspiration for this story?

LW: There was, but divulging it would give away a major plot point.

Kathy: Are you able to share any future plans for Anastasia?

LW: Anastasia and I are joined at the hip. I’ll continue putting her in the middle of murder and mayhem as long as readers want to read about her. Right now I’m mulling over plots for the next book in the series. I have several ideas, but I haven’t settled on one yet.

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

LW: I also write the Empty Nest Mystery Series, featuring Gracie and Blake Elliott. Gracie is a wannabe romance author turned amateur sleuth. Her husband Blake invariably winds up getting pulled into murder investigations as he tries to keep Gracie out of trouble. The series is a modern version of the old Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy. There have been two books in the series so far, Definitely Dead and Literally Dead. At some point in the near future I’ll be working on another book in that series. Looks like I’ve got a busy year ahead of me!
