Five Belles Too Many - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

FIVE BELLES TOO MANY by Debra H. Goldstein
The Fifth Sarah Blair Mystery

Reality TV has come to Wheaton, Alabama. Sarah Blair is roped in to being a chaperone for her mother, Maybelle, one of the Southern Belles competing for her perfect wedding. Seeing opportunities for drama, the director has contestants with history, as well as opposing college football devotees. He's also pitting Southwind restaurant against Jane's Place. Jane's days as Sarah's nemesis may be numbered when she's discovered standing over a dead body. Yet, as much as Sarah dislikes the woman, she doesn't believe she's a murderer. As the competition continues, Sarah will not only chaperone Maybelle, but keep her eyes and ears open for a killer.

Will Jane finally get her comeuppance? Sarah Blair is a much better person than I. If I had the chance to let my nemesis sink I may not toss her a waited chain, but I might not be so quick to throw a life preserver. Sarah, however calls in her boss to help clear Jane from a murder charge.

Integrity plays a huge part in the fifth Sarah Blair mystery. So does fun. I love that Maybelle and George entered a wedding competition for a lark and love their attitude. I love that Sarah takes time to play with RahRah and Fluffy. And I love the pleasure I get from reading such a well written mystery.

FIVE BELLES TOO MANY is a fun look at reality TV, Southern manners, and murder. A colorful cast of characters combined with an intricately plotted story and an ending full of surprises make for a delightful mystery.

Four Cuts Too Many - Recipes, Review, & A Giveaway

I'm pleased to share recipes for FOUR CUTS TOO MANY by Debra H. Goldstein. This book is the fourth in the Sarah Blair Mystery series and was released this week.

Stained-Glass Jell-O

This can be made with up to four different colors of Jell-O or store brand gelatin.

4 small boxes (3 ox. Each) or 2 large boxes (6 oz. each – if only using two flavors) of Jell-O or store brand gelatin.

1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk (Don’t use evaporated milk!)

2 envelopes unflavored gelatin

Water

Dissolve each small box of Jell-O in one cup boiling water (keeping flavors separate). If only using two flavors, prepare the two flavors from the large boxes separately. Chill at least three hours, until firm (Overnight works well).

After chilling the flavors, cut them into small blocks. Carefully mix the small blocks or cubes of Jell-O in a 9-by-13-inch pan, using your hands to gently toss the colors.

In a separate bowl, measure ½ cup cold water. Sprinkle the 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin on top. Let the gelatin thicken for a few minutes. Once thickened, add 1 ½ cups of boiling water. This will dissolve the gelatin. Add the can of condensed milk. Stir and allow to cool to room temperature.

Make sure the milk gelatin is cooled to room temperature and then pour it over the colored Jell-O cubes. NOTE: If the milk gelatin mixture isn’t cooled enough, it will cause the colors to run.

Chill overnight. Cut into blocks and serve.

Emily’s Egg Salad

6 large hard-boiled eggs

4 tablespoons mayonnaise

1 teaspoon white vinegar

1 teaspoon yellow mustard

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon finely grated Vidalia onion

Peel the eggs and place them in the food processor. Pulse a few times, stopping when the eggs are finely chopped. In a medium bowl, mix the other ingredients. Once they’re mixed well, add the chopped eggs and mix until just combined. Can be garnished with a touch of paprika. Makes 3-4 servings.

FOUR CUTS TOO MANY by Debra H. Goldstein
The Fourth Sarah Blair Mystery

When Sarah Blair agrees to meet sous chef Grace at the community college, she has a feeling it has something to do with her nemesis, Jane. But Grace, also an adjunct professor at the school, deems the reason for the secret meeting no longer relevant after what happened. After describing a run in with the interim chairman of the culinary program, Grace asks Sarah to accompany her back to her classroom so she can clean up. When they return they find their entry to the classroom barred and the chairman dead inside. Seeing the writing on the wall, as well as hearing Grace being called the murderer, Sarah not only gets Grace a lawyer, but starts to do a little digging on her own. With the nickname Malevolent Monster there must be plenty of other people who wanted the man dead! Sarah begins snooping while also sorting out her love life, caring for her two beloved pets, and figuring out what Jane has up her sleeve now.

Sarah knows that Grace couldn't have murdered the Malevolent Monster...couldn't she? What's an amateur sleuth to do when she's not completely positive her friend isn't the murderer? Look deeper. I love how Sarah keeps things real. While she believes Grace couldn't be a murderer, there's still a sliver of doubt that she's willing and able to acknowledge. There's a well thought out mystery in FOUR CUTS TOO MANY with enough twists to keep things interesting.

I like most of the characters found in the Sarah Blair Mystery series, from Sarah, the men in her life, even Mom, Maybelle. I despise Jane. I really hope she'll be a murder victim at some point, but in order to maintain conflict, I suppose I'm stuck with this woman. I love Rah Rah and Fluffy and am especially pleased at the awareness brought to shelter animals.

FOUR CUTS TOO MANY is a delicious mystery dealing with ambition and greed delectable for both foodies and those inept, or at least not too adept, in the kitchen.

About Four Cuts Too Many

Four Cuts Too Many (A Sarah Blair Mystery)
Cozy Mystery 4th in Series
Publisher: Kensington (May 25, 2021)
Mass Market Paperback: 304 pages

Sarah Blair gets an education in slicing and dicing when someone in culinary school serves up a main corpse in Wheaton, Alabama . . .

Between working as a law firm receptionist, reluctantly pitching in as co-owner of her twin sister’s restaurant, and caretaking for her regal Siamese RahRah and rescue dog Fluffy, Sarah has no time to enjoy life’s finer things. Divorced and sort-of dating, she’s considering going back to school. But as a somewhat competent sleuth, Sarah’s more suited for criminal justice than learning how many ways she can burn a meal.

Although she wouldn’t mind learning some knife skills from her sous chef, Grace Winston. An adjunct instructor who teaches cutlery expertise in cooking college, Grace is considering accepting an executive chef’s position offered by Jane Clark, Sarah’s business rival—and her late ex-husband’s lover. But Grace’s future lands in hot water when the school’s director is found dead with one of her knives in his back. To clear her friend’s name, Sarah must sharpen her own skills at uncovering an elusive killer . . .

"Mother..." A Three Treats Too Many Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Maybelle Johnson to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Maybelle on the pages of the Sarah Blair Mystery series. THREE TREATS TOO MANY is the third book in the series and was released today!

Mother? No, It’s Maybelle
by Debra H. Goldstein

You may call me Maybelle, Maybelle Johnson. Ever since I went to a spa in Mexico and learned that my first name had a certain ambiance and would bring me good karma, I’ve asked everyone to only refer to me as Maybelle.

I think it is a simple request, but my twins, Sarah and Emily, seem to be having a difficult time not referring to me as Mother or Mom. I know they are both busy and worried about other things, like Wheaton’s building inspector signing off so Chefs Emily and Marcus can open their Southwind restaurant in an old house on Main Street that Sarah owns. The inspector let their nemesis open her restaurant across the street from theirs two weeks ago and it is doing fantastic business, especially with the vegan dishes it is serving.

But enough about that dilemma. Surely, as smart as my daughters are, they can remember to call me Maybelle. I mean, Emily is a whiz in the kitchen, but Sarah has a knack for solving complicated murder cases. If it weren’t for her, I’d probably be doing time – and I can assure you I don’t look good in orange and black horizontal stripes. My coloring lends itself to solid black, winter white, red, or purple clothing.

Family is important to Sarah, so I don’t understand why she is having so much trouble calling me Maybelle. I think she thought this was a whim that was going to go away. Not going to be the case. I’m almost sixty and plan to live a good long time, but I want to do it happily. When my husband died, way too young, I was desolate. I feared I’d outlive my money. Sarah and Emily sat me down and showed me the true state of my finances. There was no way I could possibly outlive my money. That’s when I decided to travel, give gifts, and act like there is no tomorrow.

If it is going to make my life a little better, I don’t think it’s too much to ask everyone, including my daughters, to call me Maybelle. Do you?

THREE TREATS TOO MANY
The Third Sarah Blair Mystery

While Sarah Blair and her sister, Emily, are frustrated with the delays in getting the final inspection completed so that they can open their restaurant, Marcus is furious. What's even more maddening is that the loathsome Jane appeared to have no problems opening her restaurant right across the street. Jane's fare remains mediocre, but her sous chef has created amazing vegan recipes that have people lining up for more. When the gifted chef is found dead by the dumpster during Jane's grand opening Sarah's friend Jacob, who was smitten with the young woman, becomes the prime suspect. As Sarah looks to prove Jacob's innocence, she soon learns that Riley had more people dislike her than not. Will looking into members of the town's motorcycle club prove helpful or will it be a recipe for disaster?

The third Sarah Blair Mystery introduces new characters as we learn more details about others. I enjoy seeing Eloise's rebel side and learning about the veteran veterinarians. Maybelle is always a hoot. Sarah's romantic relationships seem nebulous. While she admits that Harlan and she won't ever be a couple, her relationship with Cliff, her admitted boyfriend, seems strained. And now we have Dr. Glen. I'm pleased that Sarah's romantic relations remain on the back burner while her relationships with RahRah and Fluffy are more important...and intrinsic to both her character and the plot. I appreciate how Sarah is learning to stand up for herself.

THREE TREATS TOO MANY looks at unrequited love and shameless self-aggrandizement. It reveals the darker side of love while providing a complex mystery. Quick and easy recipes from Sarah prove that even someone dangerous in the kitchen has the ability to make some delightful fare.

Two Bites Too Many - A Review

Review

TWO BITES TOO MANY by Debra H. Goldstein
The Second Sarah Blair Mystery

Maybelle is on the warpath and grabs Sarah Blair to set the bank president straight. While Sarah wonders why her mother doesn't take her twin sister Emily, since it was Emily's loan that was denied, she knows its easier to go along. But Maybelle isn't the only one angry at Lance as they discover another man whose loan was denied threatening him. But when Lance is found dead, the acting Chief of Police only has Maybelle in his sights. Will Sarah Blair be able to help her mom while organizing the town's first YipYeow Day? Will she be able to make Emily see the dangers of agreeing to work for Thomas Howell and whip his floundering hotel restaurant into shape? Or will she find herself in trouble once again?

There's a lot going on in the second Sarah Blair mystery. Emily and Marcus are without a restaurant and are anxiously awaiting the necessary permits. The rezoning of Main Street is still up for debate, a pet celebration is being organized, Emily seems to be helping the competition, and the bank president is murdered. Just another day in Wheaton, Alabama. Despite all this seemingly disparate activity, the book flows seamlessly. It's like real life; multiple events are going on simultaneously and, like good mysteries, everything is eventually tied together.

I love how this book highlights animals, from the rich Siamese RahRah to the seemingly homeless Fluffy.  I especially loved Fluffy's transformation. I enjoyed seeing the town get together to help their animal shelter by organizing a YipYeow Day, even if some humans had ulterior motives.

TWO BITES TO MANY is an intricately plotted mystery with a compelling storyline. Richly developed characters and lots of future possibilities, positive, negative, and complicated, make me eager to read the next Sarah Blair Mystery.

One Taste Too Many - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Debra H. Goldstein to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Debra writes the Sarah Blair Mystery series. One Taste Too Many is the first book in the series and will be released next week.

Kathy: Sarah Blair is culinary challenged. Are you confused in the kitchen as well, or are you quite adept?

DHG: Sarah and I are equally challenged in the kitchen. Like Sarah, I watched Perry Mason while my sister shadowed my mother and learned to be an excellent cook. Sarah’s Spinach Pie (made with Stouffer’s Spinach Souffle) is one of my actual go to recipes.

Kathy: After her divorce, Sarah leaves with her feisty Siamese cat, RahRah and not much else. To me, my animals would be my top priority. Do you have any pets? Is RahRah based on any of them?

DHG: Presently my only pet is my husband, Joel. In the past, I had dogs, fish, and turtles. When I wrote One Taste Too Many, I knew I wanted a cat in the book, but not knowing much about them, I arranged a background interview with a friend who always has had cats. When I saw her beautiful Siamese cat and the loving relationship she had with her pet, I went from a simple background interview to modeling my cat after hers. During the time between my writing the book and its publication, her cat passed away, but my friend is thrilled Siri is living on in print (and e-book). In fact, the cat on the cover resembles Siri.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

DHG: I always loved reading, especially mysteries. As an adult, my litigation and judicial careers were high stress as was juggling a marriage and four children. Because cozy mysteries were fun, offered a challenge to solve, and read quickly, I found a cozy mystery was perfect for relaxing from my “other” world.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

DHG: In addition to writing cozy or traditional mysteries with cozy elements, I write non-fiction essays and short stories. In the past five years, my short stories have appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies including Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Mystery Weekly, Black Cat, and The Birmingham Arts Journal. 2018 was a special year because “The Night They Burned Ms. Dixie’s Place” was named an Agatha and an Anthony short story finalist.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

DHG: When I wrote 2012 IPPY winning Maze in Blue, I thought it be the first book of an academic series set on the University of Michigan’s campus. After it was orphaned, I was told to “write something new.” Should Have Played Poker: a Carrie Martin and the Mah Jongg Players Mystery, which featured a young lawyer and a group of senior citizen Mah Jongg players was going to be my second series, but its publisher dropped its mystery line. Consequently, those two books are now standalones and the “something new” I wrote is Kensington’s Sarah Blair cozy mystery series. The focus of the series, that debuts with One Taste Too Many, is cook of convenience Sarah Blair for whom there’s only one thing scarier than cooking from scratch—murder!

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

DHG: My favorite character is Sarah Blair because I identify with her being a cook of convenience. Like her, I prefer bringing take-out in, going out for dinner, or using pre-made ingredients. I also am enjoying watching Sarah evolve (remember I’ve read the next book in the series). Although I’ve never been divorced, many of my friends and family members have, so I understand the vulnerability a woman feels when the life she thought she was going to have takes a completely different direction.

In One Taste Too Many, Sarah knew starting over would be difficult, but she never imagined how far things would fall apart when her ex dropped dead, seemingly poisoned by her twin’s award-winning rhubarb crisp, her cat is wanted by the woman who broke up her marriage, and her sister is wanted by the police for murder. How Sarah deals with all of this fascinates me and makes her my favorite character.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

DHG: Having been orphaned twice but wanting to write a cozy series, I reflected on what most cozies contain: culinary expertise and crafts and realized I was woefully inept in both. Not sure what to do next, it dawned on me there were readers who were probably just like me. Writing our story inspired this the Sarah Blair series.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

DHG: For me, writing is a passion. The culmination of the dream had to be publication.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

DHG: If I could invite any 4 authors, living or dead, to my dinner party, it would be Edna Ferber because she wrote about diversity and emotions in a time when that wasn’t done; master short story writer B.K. Stevens to learn what she would have written had she not died too young; Louise Penny because of her humor and writing skills; and, either William Kent Kreuger or Bill Crider because every dinner party needs a gentle gentleman in attendance.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

DHG: Today, I finished Cry Wolf by Annette Dashofy and began Megan Abbott’s Give Me Your Hand.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

DHG: Besides reading and writing, my hobbies and interests include my family, being a volunteer in areas that help women, children and the arts, and attending musicals (I can’t carry a tune, but I can enjoy other people doing it).

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry

DHG: Coca-Cola, a frozen pizza, eggs, and dark chocolate.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

DHG: Kensington optioned at least three books in the Sarah Blair series. One Taste Too Many debuts the series. Two Bites Too Many is scheduled for an October release and I’m madly writing Three Treats Too Many.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

DHG: My favorite thing about being an author is the people. Not only have I met authors I’ve read and respected for years, but I have found the entire mystery community and its readers to be warm, engaging, and supportive.

ONE TASTE TOO MANY  by  Debra H. Goldstein
The First Sarah Blair Mystery

Sarah Blair is having a rough time. She's barely eking out a living after her divorce left her practically penniless, leaving with only the cat. Now her twin sister, Emily, is the main suspect in her ex's murder and her ex's latest fling is after her cat! Something fishy is going on in Emily's culinary world and it's not bouillabaisse! Emily's not talking, so cooking inept Sarah will do her best to investigate the chefs, find out what's really going on, and prove her sister's innocence....while doing whatever it takes to keep her cat!

What a fun engaging start to a new series! ONE TASTE TOO MANY introduces a good blend of characters, all hiding something. Sarah is a bit downtrodden, but determined to succeed. As such, she makes a likable protagonist who readers will root for. My favorite character is RahRah. This self assured cat is smart and lovable. While most readers will be concerned over Emily's plight, my fear the whole time was RahRah's destiny. If he were mine, the only way he'd be taken away, regardless of any legal papers, is over a dead body. I won't say whose...that may make for another murder mystery.

The mystery is a fine one and had me mistrusting pretty much everybody. Plenty of twists and turns and a few surprises kept me intrigued. ONE TASTE TO MANY ends with lots of possibilities for Sarah Blair and I look forward to reading about the next chapter in her life.
