Spring has sprung in Portland, Oregon as the city celebrates its Rose Festival. Britta Johnston and her Aunt Elin are in the midst of the festivities working on their float for the festival's Grand Floral Parade. But all is not flowers and good cheer as a group of anarchists seem bent on ruining the parade and everything it stands for. Threats of violence by the group escalate, but it's their leader who is found murdered...on Britta's float! Stunned by the death, Britta also feels a strange undercurrent. Something odd is going on with the parade leaders and she means to find out what it is.

Things are not all flowers and light in this second Rose City Mystery. There is omnipresent conflict and dread coming from the anarchists creating taut suspense. In this day and age the very real threat of terrorist activity, no matter the cause, makes the danger in the book so much more real. It's not just that a person got murdered, it's the thought that anybody out enjoying the day, or even sitting comfortably at home, could be in deadly danger.

Despite the darkness, goodness and beauty exist as well. There's the beauty of flowers and the floats. The reunion of Elin and Eric, the chemistry between Britta and Pete, and the various friendships, old and new, bring lightness and love.

Lots of good suspects and plenty of suspicious activity make VIOLET TENDENCIES a complex, suspenseful mystery.

The First Christmas Village Mystery

Rose Willoughby is pleased to host the performers of Harper's Harpoons during the town's Christmas Festival. When Rose gets sidelined by a sprained ankle, Mrs. Maribel Claus comes to help with her lodgers, after all, the mister is quite busy at this time of year. After a night of legends and ghost stories the troupe's disagreeable manager is found dead on the snowy hill behind Plum Cottage, but with no tracks leading to or from the body the murder seems impossible. Could it be the Glockenvogel? Or, more likely, one of the performers? Mrs. Claus is known to be a good friend as well as a confirmed snoop, so she'll help the sheriff investigate and hopefully find the murderer before Christmas!

SLAY BELLS is a cerebral mystery. There is a charming setting filled with unique characters, but the main draw is the mystery...and an impossible mystery at that. While I found the various characters interesting and enjoyed reading about them, I wasn't particularly drawn to them. I was compelled to solve the murder, but not for the sake of any character, but rather for my own curiosity. Reading was more like watching a film from the outside rather than being a part of the world itself. That being said, it was a very good film, indeed.

Inspiration from the Golden Age of detective fiction is evident from the maps included to the very rhythm of the book itself. The reader is given the tools needed to solve the crime, if only she can distinguish the wheat from the chaff, the real clues from the red herrings.

The first Christmas Village Mystery is a fun Christmas themed brain teaser. Cleverly plotted, this traditional mystery makes the holiday season a little brighter.

Here’s a secret about my new book, A Midwinter’s Tail: Less than a year ago, it was an entirely different story.

I actually wrote a novel by that name, sent it to my editor and told myself I was done. But as time passed, this little voice in my head kept whispering, “It’s not the right story.”

So, with no time to spare — deadlines were already past — I called my editor and said, “The book I sent you isn’t cozy enough. It’s not Christmas-y enough. The warmth and good cheer just aren’t there. And I want to start again.”

To her credit, she said, “I trust you. Go for it.”

It was the best, and worst, decision I’ve made in recent years. Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic. But I was under incredible pressure. However, I knew I’d made the right call the moment I started the first chapter, with pet sitter Daphne, her sensible sister Piper and best friend Moxie Bloom all gathered in snug Plum Cottage, planning for the Bark the Halls pet-friendly ball while a snowstorm rages outside — and a specter from the past looms.

I hope you enjoy this book, which is my ode to everything cozy at Christmas time. Firelight, hot cocoa, a romantic dance, ice skating, gingerbread houses that might just yield clues… It’s all there, my present to you, just waiting to be unwrapped!

A Slay Bells Interview & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome T.C. Wescott to Cozy Up With Kathy today. T.C. writes the Christmas Village Mystery series. Slay Bells, the first book in the series, was released last week.

Kathy: Slay Bells is the first Christmas Village Mystery. Are you a fan of Christmas and the whole winter holiday season?

T.C.W.: I am a great lover of the Christmas season and all it entails. That's what's most appealing to me in writing these stories. It's an opportunity for me to disappear into this magical world where the Christmas spirit lives year round.


Kathy: What's your favorite aspect to the holiday season?

T.C.W.: The way the air feels crisper as it gets close to Christmas, the stars are brighter, and everyone's mood and spirit improves by a notch or two.


Kathy: If you had the opportunity, would you spend a vacation in a Christmas village?

T.C.W.: Yes, absolutely.


Kathy: What's your favorite holiday film, special, or book?

T.C.W.: Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is still my favorite. Many people do not realize that Christmas was not the popular holiday it is now before Dickens's story.


Kathy: How has the Golden Age of Detective Fiction influenced this mystery?

T.C.W.: Hugely. If not for the mention of cell phones I suspect some people might mistake it for a book written in that era. The classics (and not so classic, but old) mysteries are far and away my favorite to read.


Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

T.C.W.: I love the idea of a small group of people, or a small community, where everything is as it should be until suddenly it's not. Then the forces of good overtake the forces of evil and all is restored to how it should be. I think as readers such mysteries are appealing because they represent peaceful communities where any wrongs are sure to be swiftly set right.


Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

T.C.W.: Yes, I've published two well-known non-fiction books of research into the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888. That's very much apart from the cozy mysteries I write!


Kathy: Tell us about your series.

T.C.W.: The Christmas Village Mystery series will take place in the magical fictional world of Christmas Village, with Mrs. Maribel Claus as our puzzle-solving sleuth. Many of the crimes she solves will be howdunits as well as whodunits. That is to say locked room murders and impossible crimes will abound! The other series I'm currently writing is the Running Store Mystery series. These books take place in a small town in Oklahoma and center around a store devoted to running apparel. The crimes are solved by a trio of ladies: Lacy, a middle-aged divorcee new to the town; Stax, how goofy, mouthy bookseller friend; and Ruby Maplethorpe, a retired mystery novelist from the Silver Age of detection writing. The first book, Running from Scissors, was published in July and the second book, Running from Arrows, is available for preorder and comes out in January.


Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

T.C.W.: Yes, I believe I do. I'm inspired by what I like and the way I write reflects that. I love the way mystery stories were constructed in the Golden Age (between the two world wars) and I love the colorful, fun, cozy settings of modern mysteries. What I try to do is combine the two in the stories I write. My hope is to up the mystery ante while still maintaining the cozy atmosphere that modern readers enjoy.


Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

T.C.W.: I'd had success with my non-fiction books and learned a thing or two about publishing. I'd always wanted to get more involved with fiction, so then it was just a matter of choosing a subject matter. The Christmas Village and running store motifs presented themselves and proved irresistible, so I committed myself to writing at least 3 in each series.


Kathy: What are you currently reading?

T.C.W.: The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries, edited by Otto Penzler. A great collection. I've also just started The Good Girl by Mary Kubica.


Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

T.C.W.: Other than writing and reading I love playing guitar and watching unscripted TV shows, such as Survivor and Big Brother. I have two dogs, two cats, and a ferret.


Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

T.C.W.: Cheetos, gluten-free pasta, spaghetti sauce, and smoked sausage.


Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

T.C.W.: Yes, based on the initial interest I'm receiving from Slay Bells I expect the Christmas Village Mysteries will go on for some time. I'm going to at least do a third book on the Running Store Mystery series and then we'll see if that continues.


Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

T.C.W.: The writing. I love writing and the feeling of satisfaction and achievement I get when I've had a particularly good day of it. My least favorite part by a mile is the editing!

About the Author

T.C. Wescott was born in Missouri but has lived in Oklahoma most of his life. Like pretty much every author who has ever breathed, he is an avid reader. His favorites are classic mysteries from the Golden Age, as well as just before or just after that period (which is widely considered the period between the two World Wars). His first mystery novel, Running from Scissors, was published in July 2018 and will be the first of at least three books in the Running Store Mystery series.

 

The Christmas Village Mystery series will launch in November of the same year with the debut title Slay Bells. The formula for his books is simple - mixing the classic, traditional detective fiction standards with all the trappings of the modern cozy mystery.

The Second Sister Agatha and Father Selwyn Mystery

After all, this should be a time of work and prayer instead of contemplating murder mysteries. Sister Agatha regrets this decision when she hears that the too perfect head of the Woman's Institute has been found dead in the parish hall. Everyone assumes Tiffany died of a heart attack, or some other natural cause, but mystery loving Sister Agatha believes it's murder. Hoping that her childhood friend, Father Selwyn, will be the Watson to her Holmes, Sister Agatha begins collecting evidence and checking out suspects. With the blessing of the Reverend Mother, Sister Agatha will make some discrete and, at times, not so subtle, inquiries in order to find justice for Tiffany by Christmas. 

Sister Agatha is my hero! Although THE HOUR OF DEATH is the second Sister Agatha and Father Selwyn Mystery it is my first time meeting the duo...and I now will be looking to read the first book in the series post haste! I absolutely loved this book, which had me laughing out loud on several occasions. The mystery is intricate and surprising...especially as we're not even certain there's a murder! However, so many other mysterious, unusual, even dangerous, things are happening readers are bound to agree with Sister Agatha and hunt for a killer. There are plenty of twists leading to a most satisfying conclusion.

In addition to a wonderful bucolic setting (despite the danger of development ruining it) there is a bevy of wonderful characters. Everyone is deeply developed and multilayered with such individuality. The members of the Abbey are not just a homogeneous group of Anglican nuns, but rather a richly diverse group of women. There's a basketball playing Reverend Mother, a hardcore gardener, master knitter, a nun who never missed a yoga class, and, of course, a nun who's writing her own murder mystery!

THE HOUR OF DEATH, set in a charming Welsh village during Advent, filled with the most delightful characters and a puzzling mystery ticks all the boxes for a great read.

Gia Morelli has had it with politics! She's tired of Earl and Savannah bickering over the upcoming mayoral election and concerned with Skyla's reaction to one of the candidates. I love how the basis of the mystery was created in the past, a past about which Gia is totally unfamiliar. Gia's reacting without thinking and her jitteriness still annoys me, but her dedication, loyalty, and devotion to friends makes me like her. Her negative habits are slowly abating and I enjoy seeing her grow as a person. I'm also excited to see the development of some of the secondary characters, Cybil in particular.

A COLD BREW KILLING is a fast paced mystery that holds particular relevance in today's world. It's important to stand up for what you believe in and trust that your friends and family will support you. And remember family doesn't have to be blood, we can make our own family with those friends we hold dear.

Wreath Between the Lines - A Recipe, Giveway, and Review

Since the book is set around Christmas, for my blog tour I thought I’d share a few holiday recipes to get readers in the mood. One or two from the book and the others because I love them.

This one is because I love it! I don’t know about you, but I adore cheese. For lunch, snacks, and dinner. I sometimes have it for breakfast, too. A slice on an English muffin? Heaven!

Speaking of breakfast, here is a totally delicious and kid-friendly recipe that I found in Food Network Magazine and tweaked. We all need kid-friendly foods during the holidays, right? And if not kid-friendly, then adult-adored!  

It's simple. Only a few ingredients, which really pleases Jenna, the culinary bookstore owner in my Cookbook Nook Mysteries—she starts out the series learning how to cook—and it’s super tasty because of the cheese, which pleases Charlotte, the cheese shop owner in my Cheese Shop Mysteries. Mimi, the bistro owner and former chef in my French Bistro Mysteries, would probably make the waffles from scratch the day before.

I think if I were to play with this recipe I might try swapping out the cream cheese with grated cheddar or Gruyere. Yum! However, I have to admit making it with cream cheese was so easy. Who doesn't love easy during the holidays?

BREAKFAST GRILLED CHEESE

Food Network Magazine March 2014

Ingredients:

1/3 cup whipped cream cheese

1/4 cup small-curd cottage cheese

2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, plus more for topping

4 frozen waffles, untoasted

1 to 2 tablespoons jam, any flavor

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, plus more if needed

Confectioners’ sugar and ground cinnamon for topping

Syrup, if desired

Directions:

Mix the cream cheese, cottage cheese, and confectioners’ sugar in a medium bowl. Sread 2 waffles with jam, then top with the cream cheese mixture; cover with the remaining 2 waffles.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sandwiches and cook until golden and crisp, about 3 minutes per side, adding more butter to the pan if needed. Adjust the heat if the waffles are browning too quickly.

Let the sandwiches rest 1 minute before serving. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and cinnamon.

If desired, serve with syrup.

The Seventh Cookbook Nook Mystery

Jenna Hart is happily preparing for Christmas, decorating the Cookbook Nook and enjoying the festive air as all of Crystal Cove gets ready for the holiday season. Jenna's sister and family arrive unexpectedly for the local a cappella event. But all is not jolly as Whitney fears her husband is cheating on her, Spencer is acting suspicious, and Lacy is acting like a fairly typical teenager. The murder of the friend Jenna's neighbor stuns everyone. Did the killer get his intended victim, or was Jake the real target? It couldn't be because of Jake's elaborately decorated house, could it? Jenna will have to sort out her sister's marital woes, support her niece, and investigate the latest murder so that everyone can have a merry Christmas!

I love the festive holiday season and WREATH BETWEEN THE LINES is helping me get in the holiday spirit. The delightful Christmas decorations and all of the delectably described food make me want to start decorating and eating already...even though it's not quite Thanksgiving.

There's more to the book than holiday happenings, however. There's an intricately plotted murder mystery and a variety of familial relationships to sort out.
