A Scoop of Deceit - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

A SCOOP OF DECEIT by Lena Gregory
The Seventh Coffee & Cream Café Mystery

Spring is in the air in Watchogue and Danika Delaney is happy to spend the day with her mom. A trip to the garden center should be fun, even with Aunt Miriam tagging along. Their day of fun turns sour after watching a belligerent man yells at the cashier then backs his car into their truck. Not only that he has the audacity to blame her mother! After her mom receives a letter threatening a lawsuit Dani, with her friend Gwen as back up, decides to see if she can reason with him. But when they arrive at his house they find him dead-stabbed in the back! Although her boyfriend Jake is investigating, Dani is happy to let Eli bring out the murder board once more as she and her friends try to figure out who killed the duplicitous deceiver.

One of my favorite things about the Coffee & Cream Café Mystery series is how Dani's family, including the friends that are family too, rally together when one is threatened. Whether the stakes are low or high they will do whatever it takes to protect each other. And this group needs a lot of protecting!

Once again Dani finds herself in outlandish situations that had me laughing out loud. The best thing is that she has the ability to laugh at herself. It's also fine that her friends can laugh at her antics too, because the bottom line is that they love each other and nothing is done out of malice. That can't be said about our victim and even some suspects. Krane is a horrible person whose threats even exist after death. And the more we learn about him, the worse he gets! I love how the team investigates while still scooping up ice cream, pouring coffee, and going to Sunday dinner.

Heartwarming, yet hysterically funny, with a good mystery to boot A SCOOP OF DECEIT is a delightful addition to one of my favorite series.

From author Lena Gregory comes another decadently delightful cozy mystery ...

Spring has finally sprung on the south shore of eastern Long Island, New York, and Danika Delaney is ready to take a break from running her old-fashioned malt shop, the Coffee & Cream Café, to help her mom start planting for the season. With visions of colorful tulips and delicate daffodils in mind, Danika and her mother browse through the local garden center, where they can’t help but notice a confrontation between out-of-towner Sebastian Krane and the local cashier. Unfortunately, as Krane storms off, aggravated and not paying attention, he hops into his BMW, and crashes right into Mrs. Delaney as she’s backing up in her borrowed pickup truck. As if that weren't enough to put a damper on her sunny mood, Krane then has the nerve to file a lawsuit against her. But when Dani shows up at his mansion to try to straighten things out, she finds him dead, with a knife in his back. Apparently, someone had it out for Sebastian. Someone other than her mother. A fact Dani sets out to prove with the help of her sidekicks, Gwen and Eli, wading through a slew of shady suspects from the victim's stormy past. Can Dani clear her mother's name and find the truth behind Krane's murder? Or will Dani be in danger of pushing up daisies herself this spring?

Holidays and Homicides - A Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Lena Gregory back to Cozy Up With Kathy. Lena writes several series including the Coffee & Cream Café Mystery series. Lena has a short story with the characters from this series in the HOLIDAYS AND HOMICIDES anthology which was released last week.

Christmas Through the Years
By Lena Gregory

When I was young, Christmas was a magical time. I remember my mother bundling us all into the car with hot cocoa and driving around the neighborhood to look at all the decorations. My father baked tons of cookies with us each year. Every store we went into had Christmas music playing. And on the best years, it snowed! On Christmas Eve, my parents hosted a big party for all of our extended family, and we’d spend hours watching out the window to see who could spot Rudolph’s nose first. Then, when the house quieted down, I’d lay in bed listening for the sound of sleigh bells or Santa’s jolly laugh until I inevitably fell asleep before he arrived. Christmas morning would have me waking at the crack of dawn, or before, and listening for any sign that someone else was up, then throwing the covers back and bounding out of bed to run for the Christmas tree to see what Santa had brought and to pass out the trinkets I’d bought everyone at the school fair. Then, after all the presents were opened and the wrapping paper cleaned up, we’d sit down to a big family breakfast. Those memories have always stayed with me, and I’ve tried to recreate some of them for my own children.

Eventually, all four of us kids got married and had children of our own. And it was my turn to bundle my kids up and drive around town looking at decorations while Christmas music blared on the radio, though the hot cocoa mostly came from a McDonalds or Starbucks drive-thru rather than being homemade. On years that time allowed, I’d bake cookies with my kids and take them out to all the stores to shop, and Christmas tunes still filled the aisles (sometimes as early as Halloween) while we shopped for the party I’d taken over hosting. On Christmas Eve, all of our family would come over, and they’d bring friends, loved ones, often people I’d never met. And on the best years, it still snowed! I remember one year, all of us gathering outside as the snow fell, then entire neighborhood deserted, quiet, peaceful. Until my daughter and her friends came out, then not so much. But I loved every minute of it! On Christmas morning, my father would drop off a breakfast pie for us early, so once we finished opening gifts, we could all sit down and enjoy it together. And then we’d have a big Christmas dinner with family.

Since we moved to Florida, Christmas is quieter. Although last year we did have our Christmas Eve party, since we had family visiting from New York. And we still stick to some of our old traditions, like baking cookies and driving around admiring the Christmas decorations. My husband, my kids, and I all spend a special night decorating the tree with a big meal, usually pasta, and gingerbread cookies for dessert. We watch the same old Christmas movies—Year Without a Santa Claus is still my favorite! Christmas Eve is still a special night, which we all spend together, and Christmas morning is still met with anticipation and joy. Although, snow is off the table. Even though some things have changed over the years, many traditions have still passed down from one generation to the next. Now, though, the full meaning of Christmas is with me as I celebrate each year, and it’s even more joyful!

How about you? Do you have any special Christmas traditions? Have they changed over the years or do they stay the same?

HOLIDAYS & HOMICIDES
A Short Story Collection

Need a break amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? Looking for a quick read to get you in the holiday spirit? This new anthology by Gemma Halliday Publishing is just the ticket. While the book itself is long, the stories contained are short and most can easily be read in a sitting or two. There's a nice variety of authors, some familiar to me and some not. I was especially thrilled to see that Lena Gregory had a story featuring the characters from her Coffee & Cream Café Mystery series, one of my favorites and probably my favorite story in the anthology. I was also pleased to see a Catherine Bruns tale and that Christine Knapp had a modern midwife story. I also discovered new to me authors whose books I need to check out, particularly Rosalie Spielman and Kelly Rey. I must admit I did skip reading one story. I can't abide present tense and could only manage a paragraph of that particular story. It should be noted that while the title of the anthology is HOLIDAYS & HOMICIDES not all of the stories included are murder mysteries. There are plenty of other crimes that provide good puzzles and several stories show that.

HOLIDAYS & HOMICIDES is a delightful collection of holiday mysteries to help you wind down and relax during this hectic time of year while bringing Yuletide cheer during any season!

Home Fries and Alibis - A Review & Giveaway

HOME FRIES AND ALIBIS by Lena Gregory
The Eighth All-Day Breakfast Café Mystery

Life in Central Florida is agreeing with Gia Morelli. She owns the popular All-Day Breakfast Café and has a dynamic group of friends as well as a fiancé who loves her. She has a wonderful home in a peaceful neighborhood. She's even getting used to the bears, raccoons, snakes, and other critters that live nearby. What she can't get used to is her new neighbor.  The once idyllic community has been shattered by the arrival of Gladys Hoffmeier. Gladys is nasty, belligerent, and has called 911 on her neighbors so many times she's been banned. But she crosses the line when she descends on Gia's home accusing Thor, Gia's Bernese mountain dog, of digging in her yard. Gia manages to control her temper until Gladys threatens to shoot Thor. The following morning Gladys is found dead. Pretty much everyone who met the woman had a reason to want her dead, but who actually did the deed?

Emotions run high in the eighth All-Day Breakfast Café. Gia is a better person than I. If someone threatened my animals and wound up dead I'd be satisfied and ready to dance on that person's grave. Gia and Savannah actually feel bad, wanting the woman gone, but not dead, and are ready to figure out just who killed her.

HOME FRIES AND ALIBIS is a well plotted mystery with no end of suspects and a wide range of motives, a list made even longer when blackmail comes to light. There are thrilling, pulse pounding moments. There are also quiet contemplative moments and moments of fun.

The characters are the heart of the story. Gia and Savannah's friendship so close as to be family. Leo and Hunt, Cole and Earl, Alfie's exuberance, I could go on. The people are more than characters on a page. They're people you want to make a part of your life.

With a heartwarming sense of community HOME FRIES AND ALIBIS is a cozy hug in book form.

Soft Serve Sleighing - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

SOFT SERVE SLEIGHING by Lena Gregory
The Fifth Coffee & Cream Café Mystery

It's a blizzard! Danika Delaney and her friends are snug inside her shop ,the Coffee & Cream Café, as severe winter conditions have shut down all of Watchogue. The arrival of three young women in the midst of a snow storm shouldn't be cause for alarm, but trouble starts when Brynleigh Star, the YouTube influencer, tries to extort Dani in exchange for a good review, then leaves without paying for the multitude of food the trio consumed. Still seething Dani tries to embrace winter fun by giving in to her friend's desire to go sledding. But a wild ride down the town's only hill leads Dani right into Brynleigh's dead body. With the woman's entourage calling Dani a murderer and a brawl breaking out in her shop Dani and her friends once again find themselves in the midst of a murder investigation. Will they be able to put the killer on ice?

There may be a blizzard outside, but SOFT SERVE SLEIGHING will warm your heart. I love this series so much and this fifth entry is a great addition. The friendship between Dani, Eli, and Gwen is a treasure. They would do anything for each other whether it be tracking down a killer or building a snowman! That level of devotion makes the horribleness of Brynleigh Star and her "friends" all the more upsetting.

The mystery was complex with lots of possibilities to explore. I appreciated how Dani tried to let Jake and the police investigate without becoming too involved, but how could she say no to Eli. And what trouble she get into being an armchair detective? Plenty. Serious danger impacts everything and there are plenty of heart pounding and heart stopping moments!

Love and laughter fill SOFT SERVE SLEIGHING with joy, creating a fun and memorable mystery. So grab a bowl of ice cream, no matter the weather, and settle in for a satisfying read!

However, their plans to wait out the storm in cozy company are interrupted when a popular YouTuber and her two companions show up at the door—they've been trapped by the storm, and Dani generously offers to serve them breakfast. But her generosity isn't rewarded in kind, as the reviewer then tries to extort money from Dani in exchange for a good review! Or so she thought.

Dani and her friends decide to go sleigh riding the morning after the storm clears, but instead of a winter wonderland, they find the extorting YouTuber...dead! Some New Year Advice

As the new year begins I thought we could do with some advice for the year ahead. I posed the question to several characters from mystery series and this is what they said:

“Happiness in life is not about getting what you want, it’s about loving what you get.”

The new year is a chance to refresh and recharge. Like a well-balanced meal, make sure to nourish every part of yourself—your mind, body, and spirit. Cook a meal that brings you joy, share it with those you love, and savor every moment. Food, like a good book, has the power to bring people together and create lasting memories.

Until recently, I haven't had many successes in my life, unlike my twin sister, Allie. Oddly, I never give up hope. At New Year's, I like to remind myself, as Scarlett did, "Tomorrow is another day." Anything can happen - in love, at the wine bar I manage, or with solving the occasional homicide that presents itself - and it might be something good.

"You can never make too many puns. Did you know that there's this kid in my class who collects candy canes? They're all in mint condition! Do you know what I use to write my puns? A pun-cil! So... make more puns in 2025. It's going to be a particularly punny year."

Declan from the "Hammerhead" Jed Mystery series by A. J. Devlin has this to say:

“At least I ain’t afraid o’usin’ me balls!”

This is what Declan says to get Jed to take the case in Bronco Buster — it’s also a pretty spot on take on his outlook on life — “quit being’ a wanker and ‘man up’ might be the take away underneath the Irish slang.

Hello and Happy New Year! My name is Lucy Berberian. I’m taking a break as manager from my family’s Mediterranean restaurant, Kebab Kitchen, to ponder my New Year’s resolution. This year, after a lot of thought, I decided to try something different. Instead of my typical “eat healthier and lose extra pounds” resolution (because working in a restaurant is too tempting), I decided to pick a cause that’s special to me and regularly volunteer to help others. I wish you all a happy and healthy 2025!

"Last year was a bit rough in Watchogue, but tough years always end, and new years always begin, bringing their own share of ups and downs, their own challenges and successes. My advice would be, remember the good times and celebrate your victories, even the small ones."

If I were to recommend the cultivation of any one virtue in the New Year, it would be the practice of mindful listening. I think there's always a temptation to be the speaker, the entertainer, the one soaking up the limelight, but it is in the practice of listening to others that we gain understanding and empathy of our human nature. It's aided me tremendously in my writing, opened the door to many new friendships, and even helped me solve a murder or two along the way.

My mom Eileen always tells me, “Don’t borrow trouble, Kate.” I have no idea what she means—with our family, trouble is on permanent loan!
