Murder in a Lavender Daze - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

MURDER IN A LAVENDER DAZE by Daryl Wood Gerber
The Second Aroma Wellness Mystery

Emma Brennan's Aroma Wellness Spa is doing well, even with Mah's struggles with the telephone at reception. Always looking to branch out Emma is hosting a Happily Divorced party for spa regular Addison Lacey. Becoming friends with the woman Emma is invited to dinner with Addison and her family only to witness contentious bickering with Gianna, Addison's mother, lambasting her daughter. When Emma goes to their house the following morning to pick up payment for the party, she and Addison find Gianna dead. With Addison under suspicion Emma decides to try to solve the murder.

While the Happily Divorced party is for Addison and her soon to be ex-husband Wyatt, the second Aroma Wellness Mystery has more than its share of unhappy marriages-Addison's parents, her aunt and uncle, and even Emma's already divorced parents. There's even a fiancée with cold feet. No wonder Emma isn't in a rush to get involved in a romantic relationship, although we do see a possible contender. There may be romance for her cousin Sierra too.

I love the whole vibe of the Aroma Wellness Spa, with the café and gift shop. While I may not desire a facial or mani pedi, I would love a sound bath or other meditative session. I can also see myself splurging in the gift shop and enjoying some snacks created by Sienna. The peaceful ambiance makes a striking contrast to the murders Emma encounters as well as the dangers she faces while shaky alibis and various motives contributed to this interesting puzzle.

A delicious mystery wrapped in unhappy relationships and soothing vibrations makes MURDER IN A LAVENDER DAZE a delightful read. I was happy to return to the Aroma Wellness Spa and look forward to my next visit!

To kick off her journey toward becoming a better version of herself, Addison wants to celebrate, bigtime. Her wealthy mother, Gianna, a former model turned difficult diva, is footing the bill. . . . But when Emma goes to Gianna’s home to pick up the final payment, she and Addison find her dead in her bed amid the aroma of lavender, with an herbal-infused pillow from the party nearby.

Soon, Addison is a prime suspect. But Emma knows there are plenty of others Gianna rubbed the wrong way, including her soon-to-be ex-son-in-law. Once again, with the help of her cousin, her nana, and her trusted Birman cat, Vivi, Emma is determined to sniff out a killer—whether the police like it or not . . .

A brazen killer sparks Theodosia Browning’s sense of justice in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

As fireflies dazzle like tiny glowing lanterns, tea maven Theodosia hosts an elegant evening tea on the patio of the Tangled Rose B and B. But in this gentle darkness an intruder has made their way in and slipped deadly drugs into the baked Alaska of Mrs. Van Courtland, one of Charleston’s local grande dames. Shocked by this brazen act, urged on by Mrs. V’s grieving son, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. Soon, she finds herself at odds with a greedy developer, the questionable residents of Honey Badger House, a vengeful ex-daughter-in-law, ne’er do well relatives, and a housekeeper who knows all the secrets.

As Theodosia hosts a Moulin Rouge Tea and a Queen Victoria Tea, her tea sommelier Drayton is assaulted by a masked stranger and the fiancé of Mrs. V’s son is kidnapped. It’s only at the Starry Starry Night black tie ball that Theodosia stumbles upon the killer and gets pulled into a dramatic life and death chase.

About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs. Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are: The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston. The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here! The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Embroidered Lies and Alibis - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Ralph, the Shakespeare-Quoting Parrot to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Ralph on the pages of the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries by Lois Winston. Embroidered Lies and Alibis is the fifteenth book in the series and was published last week.

If you were expecting a guest post from one of the two-legged characters who populate Lois Winston’s Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, I’m sorry to disappoint you. However, if you keep reading, I promise you won’t regret it. I’m quite the raconteur, if I do say so myself.

Lots of cozy mysteries feature dogs and cats, and you’ll find one of each within the page of Lois’s series, but yours truly, the taloned and feathered member of the family, is the real star of the household. Chief among my superpowers is my ability to squawk situation-appropriate quotes from old Will’s many plays and sonnets. My talent developed over decades of living with Anastasia’s great-aunt Penelope Periwinkle, a Shakespearean scholar and professor. I even accompanied her to her lectures. Those college kids loved me, if I do say so myself.

Anastasia inherited me when Professor Penelope “shuffled off this mortal coil” (Hamlet, Act Three, Scene One) to join the Bard of Avon inside the Pearly Gates. At first Anastasia wasn’t thrilled with her inheritance. She would have preferred Great-aunt Penelope’s cameo collection, but that was left to Anastasia’s mother. However, I believe I’ve since proven my worth. And FYI, unlike a certain canine member of the household, I’m potty-trained. No one has to walk me several times a day during New Jersey nor’easters or blizzards.

Having spent most of my long life with Professor Penelope, I’m quite the Shakespearean scholar myself. And although African Greys are known to have exceptional intelligence and huge vocabularies, I’m not exaggerating when I state that I completely out-parrot the other members of my species.

Given that Lois Winston has seen fit to dump all sorts of murder and mayhem on poor Anastasia, one of my tasks within the series is to insert a bit of much-needed comic relief as a counterbalance to all that murder and mayhem. You should see how unsuspecting characters react when they first hear me recite a few lines. Not only is my timing spot on, but so is the context, not to mention that in addition, I always quote the play’s title, act, and scene. It’s a shame there are no stage parts written for Shakespeare-quoting parrots. If there are any playwrights reading this, have your people call my people. You won’t be sorry.

I’m also far better at dealing with intruders than the four-legged resident of Casa Pollack or the furball who occasionally makes her home with us. You should see my magnificent wingspan, not to mention my swooping prowess. I’ve employed both when suspicious characters show up at Anastasia’s door, like that sketchy Jeremy Dugan in Embroidered Lies and Alibis, the most recent Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery.

Sometimes, all I have to do is pierce someone with my menacing stare to send the culprit running. However, on more than one occasion, I’ve had to resort to unleashing my African Grey Ninja skills. Check out Scrapbook of Murder or Sorry, Knot Sorry to see what I mean. Anyone who attacks Anastasia doesn’t stand a chance against my talons and beak.

Finally, I like to think that my matchmaking skills are unparalleled. The moment Zachary Barnes entered our lives, I knew that man was the best thing to happen to Anastasia since Lois started messing with her life. Even after fifteen books, not to mention a marriage, Anastasia isn’t quite sure Zack is who he claims to be. Yes, he’s an award-winning photojournalist, but is he more? Does he, as Anastasia suspects, work for one of the alphabet agencies? Enquiring minds want to know, but this parrot really doesn’t care. I’m taking full credit for Zack sticking around and the two of them tying the knot.

As protective as I am of Anastasia and her sons, Zack is my favorite human. We’ve developed quite the bromance. At times, I think Anastasia was even a bit jealous, but since I’ve saved her life on more than one occasion, she really doesn’t have any right to complain, does she?

Do you have a favorite nonhuman with superhuman abilities? Both Lois and I would love to hear from you.

A Stitch in Time Could Save a Life…

When Anastasia’s mother Flora is offered a free spa vacation from Jeremy Dugan, a man connected to her distant past, Anastasia and husband Zack suspect ulterior motives. After all, too-good-to-be-true often spells trouble. Their suspicions are confirmed when the FBI swoops in to apprehend Dugan. However, Dugan isn’t who he claimed to be, and his arrest raises more questions than answers.

The Feds link Dugan to a string of cons targeting elderly single women across the country, but his seemingly airtight alibi leaves investigators stumped. Then, shortly after his release on bail, he’s kidnapped. A certain segment of New Jersey’s population is known for delivering deadly messages, and the FBI believes Dugan received one of them.

Meanwhile, bodies begin showing up in the newly created public garden across the street from Anastasia and Zack’s home. With two baffling crimes, no clear suspects, scant evidence, and every possible motive unraveling, both the FBI and local law enforcement are once again picking Anastasia’s brain. This time, though, her involvement is far from reluctant. Will she stitch together enough clues before she or someone she loves becomes the killer’s next victim?

Craft project included.

About Lois Winston

USA Today and Amazon bestselling author Lois Winston began her award-winning writing career with Talk Gertie to Me, a humorous fish-out-of-water novel about a small-town girl going off to the big city and the mother who had other ideas. That was followed by the romantic suspense Love, Lies and a Double Shot of Deception.

Then Lois’s writing segued unexpectedly into the world of humorous amateur sleuth mysteries, thanks to a conversation her agent had with an editor looking for craft-themed mysteries. In her day job Lois was an award-winning craft and needlework designer, and although she’d never written a mystery—or had even thought about writing a mystery—her agent decided she was the perfect person to pen a series for this editor. Thus, was born the Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mysteries, which Kirkus Reviews dubbed “North Jersey’s more mature answer to Stephanie Plum.” The series now includes fifteen novels and three novellas. Lois also writes the Empty Nest Mysteries, currently at two novels, and one book so far in her Mom Squad Capers series.

To date, Lois has published twenty-four novels, five novellas, several short stories, one children’s chapter book, and one nonfiction book on writing, inspired by her twelve years working as an associate at a literary agency. Greetings! My name is Ezio Tiepolo. I am proud to be Terza's father. She is my youngest daughter. I also have a son named Damiano. We call him Dom. Terza's and Dom's older sister is named Angeline.

The love of my life is Mrs. Tiepolo, my beloved wife, Benedette. I feel like I married an Italian movie star!

Benedette and I own the Tiepolo Mercato in Little Italy. It is located just a short walk from our home. Terza’s Macaroni on Wheels catering company is also next door. How blessed we are to all live and work in the same community as a family.

S.K. Derban, the author of CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE, a Macaroni on Wheels Mystery has included a Character Card with my photo. Ciao!

CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE by S. K. Derban
The Second Macaroni on Wheels Mystery

Terza Tiepolo  is excited that her catering company, Macaroni on Wheels, is helping to plan a surprise birthday party for Sloan Kamoze. Her husband, Joshua, is a joy to work with as are his wife's co-workers who are helping. The only dark cloud is Joshua's sister, Ruby. The woman is paranoid and delusional making accusations and odd statements. When Terza returns to their home the morning after the party she finds Sloan dead at the bottom of their beautiful curved staircase, just like Joshua's first wife. But Terza's eagle eye notices clues that indicate this was not just a tragic accident.

There is a lot I like about CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE. I love the Tiepolo family dynamic; the way they care about each other, but also needle each other, the way they have Sunday dinner together then go play bocce ball. It's a warm loving feeling that extends to Terza's best friend Mo and her husband. I also adore the relationship between Terza and the medical examiner. I hope his assistant will play a bigger role in the next book as I thought she was a great addition. I enjoy the neighborhood of Little Italy which brings back memories of when I lived in a different Little Italy over 30 years ago. Of course, I love the food. The descriptions had be drooling.

Unfortunately, there were several things I wasn't too fond of in the second Macaroni on Wheels Mystery. First of all it was blatantly obvious who the killer was as well as the motive. Terza's near desperation to be married is a bit much and Nick's explanation for his behavior was believable...but barely. I also thought we had a possible third love interest, but we didn't. The series has two bits I really enjoy, the first is the M. E. calling Terza Number Three, and the second is her father asking her is she's read her bible and called her mother. However, while the latter bit is funny and fine to be repeated every day and it's fine that Terza reads her bible daily, though this is more of a Baptist practice than Roman Catholic, but does the author really have to describe her doing this EVERY day? And then have a whole section quoting the bible? From the acknowledgements it's obvious that religion is a major part of the author's life, but the book comes across more evangelical than anything else and is a bit off putting.

Delicious Italian food and the love of family make CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE a fun feel good mystery.

Setting - Little Italy, San Diego and San Diego Bay

Paperback Print Length: ‎ 302 pages Digital Print Length: ‎ 273 pages

The Little Italy entertainment continues in this second book of the Macaroni on Wheels series. Case of the Curved Staircase has more twists and turns than Terza can handle. And, Detective Nicholas Garza is not on the case. Say it isn't so, Nico! Staircases can be fatal, especially on Halloween. After catering a surprise birthday party on the evening of October 30th, Terza returns to the scene of the celebration on the following morning. Instead of being greeted by the happy, party hosts, Terza discovers a dead body at the bottom of the curved staircase. Not again! And this time, Terza's amateur detective skills are landing her directly into personal danger. She would rather be using her chef's knife than having one pointed at her face! As the feisty Italian caterer continues to fill her free time solving crime, she runs head first into a new detective. Unlike Nicholas Garza, the detective now in charge considers Terza a hinderance instead of a help. Fortunately, Jacob Radovan, the medical examiner, continues to be Terza's ally. There is also an unexpected wedding in Case of the Curved Staircase. Readers of Uneven Exchange just might cheer out loud. The almost perfect weather in San Diego allows the bride and groom to take a carriage ride from the wedding venue to the reception ballroom. It's a fairytale come true. Fans of cozy mysteries will revel in solving another murder along with Terza, and will continue to appreciate her zest for life. Readers will be spending more time with the animated Tiepolo family, and especially Terza's father. Ezio's Halloween costume is a moo-ving choice! The Tiepolo's celebrate their loving, family bond as they join together each Sunday. Food, family, and fun! Once again, you may consider this your personal invitation...

Tell-Tale Treats - A Review

 Review

TELL-TALE TREATS by Jennifer J. Chow
The Third Magical Fortune Cookie Mystery

It's a girls' weekend when former high school friends led by Ashlyn Cook, the Queen Bee herself, rent out Pixie Inn. Felicity Jin is happy to provide a never ending supply of baked goods for the event while her boyfriend, Kelvin is outfitting the B&B with his floral designs. That night the owner of the inn calls Kelvin in a panic, but when he and Felicity arrive they find a water leak is the least of their worries. Ashlyn is dead. Was this a tragic accident? With Detective Sun on the case it must be something more. Felicity and Kelvin will be sure to make themselves useful-whether it's delivering treats from their stores, providing a shoulder to lean on, or picking up clues to catch a killer.

With the release of the third Magical Fortune Cookie Mystery I was happy to find myself back in California drooling over almond cookies and pineapple buns.

TELL-TALE TREATS looks at how friendships can change, what people will do for love, and how love and friendship can sour. It also shows how family doesn't need a blood, or even human, connection. Family is who is there for you, in good times and bad and who gathers round your dining room table.

I enjoyed the mystery and especially appreciated how Whiskers and two other furry friends helped solve the crime as well as provide love and affection. While I knew early on a certain someone was bad news, and a big liar, I was unsure of motive. I liked how Felicity and Kelvin worked together to get to the bottom of everything.

It's interesting to note that since Felicity and Kelvin became a romantic couple the investigation has become a team effort. It's no longer Felicity investigating with help from her friend Kelvin, instead the two of them do everything together. This works at the moment, as they are a great team. I only hope this coupling doesn't diminish Felicity's power.

With delectable Chinese baked goods and a hint of magic TELL-TALE TREATS provides a scrumptious mystery that's to die for.

Essentials of Death - A Guest Post , Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to allow Carissa Carmichael to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Carissa on the pages of the Aromatherapy Apothecary Mystery series by Kim Davis. ESSENTIALS OF DEATH is the second book in the series and was released last week.

It’s been a few months since I stood over a dead body in my Aromatherapy Apothecary shop, my copper distiller next to the man. I still have nightmares about the violence even with the murderer being caught and serving time in prison. But I’m trying to put it behind me and focus on growing my store in my hometown of Oak Creek Valley in Southern California. With tourists flooding into our town, especially those in the Los Angeles area looking for a close getaway, I’ve had a good amount of business. Nestled between the Topatopa Mountains, our town has much to offer. There are wineries, art galleries, spas, monthly festivals, outdoor adventures, and, frequently, Hollywood studio film shoots. In the meantime, I’m keeping busy with the retail side of running an aromatherapy shop plus distilling essential oils from locally sourced flowers and herbs.

This week, the town is hosting a playwright conference and festival. Hordes are descending on Oak Creek Valley, eager to see a famous personage or even participate in the events. My shop was one of the lucky ones chosen to exhibit at the opening festivities, as was the Jean Luc Patisserie, owned by my maybe special friend, Jasper. What should have been a fun experience turned into one that led to a very public altercation with my high school nemesis, Lacie. She works for Jasper, and when he became ill, she stepped in to run his booth. I don’t understand why she’s always had it in for me, but she did her best to spoil my time at the event, and even humiliated me in front of some clients. And all of this happened after the resident tarot card reader pulled some very scary cards from her deck for my reading. Even she seemed distraught… but given what happened later that night, those cards just might have been prescient.

After finding another murder victim, unfortunately at Jasper’s patisserie this time, my dad, the chief of police, has recused himself. The two detectives brought into town to investigate have my dad doing nothing more than crowd control and keeping an eye out on festival goers. It doesn’t help that one of the detectives is certain I killed Lacie and he’s doing everything he can to prove it. Given my past scandal in San Francisco, where my face was plastered all over the media as I perp walked, handcuffed, to a waiting squad car, I’m terrified no one will believe I’m innocent. My dad is being shut out, so now it’ll be up to me and my friends to find out who, besides me, could have killed my frenemy. If I don’t find the killer, it won’t be long before cold steel handcuffs are slapped on my wrists… again.

ESSENTIALS OF DEATH by Kim Davis
The Second Aromatherapy Apothecary Mystery

Although participating in the Oak Creek Valley Playwright Conference and Festival will be hard work, Carissa Carmichael will be providing mini reflexology sessions, she's looking forward to spending time with Jasper, who will be manning the booth next to her. Unfortunately, with Jasper ill Cari is saddled with her nemesis Lacie Simmons in that booth. Lacie wastes no time berating staff, making digs at Cari, and generally being her toxic self. Wanting nothing more than to go home and relax after the event, Cari finds herself offering to help Lacie make baked goods for the following morning. But when she returns she finds Lacie dead-mirroring one of the Tarot cards from Cari's reading that morning. With symbols and veiled threats Cari finds herself being framed for murder and with no choice but to investigate herself.

Lacie Simmons created chaos and drama wherever she went so it's no wonder someone finally killed her, but who? I liked the fact that at first Carissa had no intention of investigating the murder, that is until someone started targeting, then framing her. Ratcheting up the tension was Detective Raaf. It's obvious from the start that he has something against Cari and is deliberately intimidating her, doing everything possible to prove she killed Lacie. What I found odd was that at the start two detectives were working the case, but partway through the story Detective Martin disappeared. He, the allegedly tough but fair detective, was gone leaving the detective with a vendetta, who was introduced as "assisting" in the investigation, to make Cari's life miserable. I question why Martin was ever in the story, or a reason given as to why he left the investigation.

Carissa is made of stern stuff. I like that even though she is scared, she knows to call the police when necessary and waits for her lawyer when being interrogated by the detectives, because Raff is most certainly interrogating and not interviewing!

I enjoyed the aromatherapy touches to the story and was drooling over Jasper's baked goods. I want to make a healing balm and enjoy some lavender shortbread cookies. (It should be noted that the author graciously gives directions for both at he end of the book!) The camaraderie of Cari's friends and co-workers, as well as her protective father makes a good counterpoint to all of the negative and distressing actions.

The mystery was complex, with Cari bearing the brunt of the drama, from her social media being hacked, Tarot cards being left, and a detective intent on proving her guilty. Cari also found herself in the clutches of the killer and narrowly escaped her own murder! And even after the killer was caught she found herself being threatened, with someone vowing to ruin her life.

More than one malevolent character brings on the drama in ESSENTIALS OF DEATH making for a heart pounding suspenseful mystery.

After a scandalous arrest in San Francisco, Carissa Carmichael has moved back to her small Southern California hometown to start over as she opens her Aromatherapy Apothecary shop and reflexology services. A tourist destination, Oak Creek Valley, seems the perfect place to put the past behind her, but it seems no one will let her forget, especially her high school nemesis, Lacie. When Carissa finds her frenemy murdered after having a public altercation at the town's playwright conference and festival, she becomes the primary suspect. It doesn't help that the tarot cards she drew earlier in the day foretold the nature of the murder weapon. Includes essential oil and reflexology tips.
