The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ghost - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING GHOST
By Michele Pariza Wacek
The Third Redemption Detective Agency Mystery

When Emily Hildebrandt takes the call from a new client for the Redemption Detective Agency she thinks it's a case of missing husband. And it is...sort of. It's just that the missing husband has actually been dead for a decade and it's his ghost that's missing! While Emily is ready to call it quits and even Mildred seems to agree, Aunt Tilde is adamant they help her old friend Ruth and if that means finding a missing ghost, so be it!

Peculiar things happen in Redemption, Wisconsin. A new case for the Redemption Detective Agency starts off as a missing husband then morphs into a missing ghost, a con, and murder! I loved how the mystery progressed from one issue to another with the zany antics of Aunt Tilde, Mildred, and Nora making me shake my head and laugh! The root of the story is a sad one. A grieving widow desperately missing her late husband and being cruelly taken advantage of. Sadly, elder abuse is common and comes in many forms, despicable scams such as the one  here are too common. I love how each problem led to a new avenue to investigate and each resulting answer led to a satisfying conclusion.

Emily is the wonderful level headed office manager who does her best to keep things running smoothly at her aunt's detective agency. I love how, even as she tries to reign the others in, she fulfills their requests even as she has her doubts. I wonder what Trisha is scheming and Emily needs to dump Jerome. He's a condescending ass. She's picked up on a few red flags, but she keeps dismissing them. I can't wait for her to finally realize he's a jerk and let him have it before completely walking away.

I absolutely adore this series. The banter, the wacky dialogue that can make your head spin as well as Emily's will have you in stitches. Don't get me started on ghost butts. But at the bottom of it all is the heart. The kindness. Which Emily seems to forget. The ending made me so mad. Not the solution of the mystery, but what happened afterward. I can only hope that Emily will come to her senses and realize what really matters.

THE MYSTERIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING GHOST is a fast paced madcap mystery with heart. You'll find yourself laughing then smiling as the pieces come together. I'm eagerly awaiting the Redemption Detective Agency's next case!

Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series
Setting - Redemption, Wisconsin in the 1990s
Publisher ‏ : ‎ Love-Based Publishing (September 2025)

Emily Hildebrandt is learning to settle into some of the very strange cases that come through The Redemption Detective Agency’s door.

Like Aunt Tilde’s friend Ruth who claims she’s lost a ghost.

How does one lose a ghost? Apparently when the ghost decides to walk out the door.

But, to make matters more complicated, it’s not just any ghost but the ghost of Ruth’s dead husband. Who was murdered decades ago under very suspicious circumstances.

Emily has no choice but to go back in time and figure out what really happened to Ruth’s husband, in order for everyone to rest in peace.

A spin-off from the Charlie Kingsley Mystery series! The Redemption Detective Agency is a funny, twisty cozy mystery series set in the 1990s featuring silver sleuths solving cold cases. Great for fans of the Thursday Murder Club.

About Michele Pariza Wacek

A USA Today Bestselling, award-winning author, Michele taught herself to read at 3 years old because she wanted to write stories so badly. It took some time (and some detours) but she does spend much of her time writing stories now. Mystery stories, to be exact. They're clean and twisty, and range from psychological thrillers to cozies, with a dash of romance and supernatural thrown into the mix. If that wasn't enough, she posts lots of fun things on her blog, including short stories, puzzles, recipes and more, at MPWNovels.com. Michele grew up in Wisconsin (hence why all her books take place there), and still visits regularly, but she herself escaped the cold and now lives in the mountains of Prescott, Arizona, with her husband and southern squirrel hunter Cassie. When she's not writing, she's usually reading, hanging out with her dog, or watching the Food Network and imagining she's an awesome cook. (Spoiler alert, she's not. Luckily for the whole family, Mr. PW is in charge of the cooking.)

Pleats and Poison - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Lucinda Race to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Lucinda writes the Dress Designer Cozy Mystery series. PLEATS AND POISON is the third book in the series and was released last month.

Kathy: In PLEATS AND POISON Claudia Grant is hosting Thanksgiving dinner for seven guests—and one ghost, making her famous mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was never part of my Thanksgiving Day dinners. Was it on your Turkey Day menu? What's your Thanksgiving specialty?

LR: It wasn’t a part of mine either, but my son-in-law said it was on his table every year, so I thought it’d be fun to incorporate that into this story. Also I plan on making macaroni and cheese next Thanksgiving. I love traditions.

Kathy: Claudia is a fashion-savvy psychic. Do you believe in psychics and mediums? Have you met any?

LR: I have talked with a medium. She seemed to know a lot about me and my future, most of which came true. But I guess Claudia is more of a ghost whisperer and less psychic in that sense.

Kathy: I am decidedly not fashion savvy? Are you? Do you follow fashion trends or even sew yourself?

LR: I have sewn a lot in my life, from tailored jackets to Halloween costumes and Christmas stockings. As far as fashion is concerned, I don’t follow the trends, but I love classic looks and comfortable clothes. Give me a great pair of jeans, a soft blouse and blazer and comfortable cowboy boots and I’m happy.

Kathy: Claudia has a best friend and a ghostly sidekick. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever had a ghostly encounter?

LR: I do believe in ghosts and angels. When I purchased my current home, my daughter was home alone and swore she heard heels clicking on the living room floor. It popped out of my mouth that it was George making sure she was doing her homework, and it stuck.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

LR: I’ve devoured mystery books since I could read. I’ve loved Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, and of course Agatha Christie books are a perennial favorite. I never thought I could write one. I don’t plot books, I’m what’s called a pantser and I thought to write a great cozy I’d have to change how I write. But I gave it a try and found a method that works for me. It’s a blast!

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

LR: I write small town contemporary romance and I have three connected series.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

LR: The McKenna Family Romance Series” Strong Women and the Strong Men who love them.

The Price Family Romance Series: Family, wine and second chances—the perfect vintage for happily ever afters.

The Cowboys of River Junction: Welcome to the small-town cowboy romance series where fans call these sweet romances: "stories chock-full of emotion.".

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

LR: Having a favorite character is like asking if I have a favorite kid. I love them all, but each main female characters in my books have snippets of my daughters.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

LR: Life inspires me. My favorite pastime is to sit and observe the smallest action or detail while people and daily activities swirl around me. It’s from those experiences that my stories are crafted.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

LR: I love a challenge, and my husband asked, Why not? So I did and now 45+ books later, here I am.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

LR: Agatha Christie: Mystery

Nora Roberts: Romance and Suspense

Jane Austen: Romance/ Literary Realism

Dan Brown: Suspense

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

LR: The Vampire Knitting Club Mystery Series and a book on golf.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

LR: I adore gardening, flowers and veggies. I love to read and my TBR list is HUGE and I love cooking and baking for family and friends. Oh and I just took up golf again after 2- years away from the links.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

LR: Light cream, Coke, Salsa, and chocolate in the meat keeper. J

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

LR: For the Craft and Ghost Cozy Mysteries series, there will be more books, if I had to say now, at least 9 more. I also have a non-paranormal series I’m writing and another spin- off to the Bookstore Cozy Mystery Series, the Witches of Robins Pointe.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

LR: Meeting and talking with readers who may have enjoyed my books or who are interested in trying one for the first time. I love talking books with others, it makes me very happy.

Mrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild Library - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Amanda Chapman to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Amanda writes the Mrs. Christie Mystery series. MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY is the first book in the series and will be released next week.

Kathy: In MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY we meet Tory Van Dyne who works as a book conservator at Manhattan’s Mystery Guild Library. Is this a job that you would be interested in having?

AC: Honestly, I can’t imagine any job better than the one I’m doing now (i.e., writing mysteries). But if I had to choose another one, it would absolutely be book conservator. I love books. I particularly love old books (which explains why I still have all my Nancy Drews and all my mother’s Agatha Christies). What could be more rewarding than to bring a book back to life? Even if it sometimes means literally vacuuming up silverfish and bookworms (yes, they are a real thing!) hiding between the pages.

Kathy: Tory meets a woman who claims to be the ghost of Agatha Christie! Do you believe in ghosts?

AC: Well, as Agatha Christie once wrote in her short story “The Hound of Death,” “the supernatural is only the natural of which the laws are not understood.” Goodness knows, I don’t understand them. That being said, I stand with the great British master of the ghost story, M.R. James himself: “Do I believe in ghosts? I am prepared to consider evidence and accept it if it satisfies me.”

Kathy: If you could have someone who has crossed over come back to help you, who would you choose?

AC: Let’s see… Oh yeah, I know. Agatha Christie. Definitely Agatha Christie.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

AC: Well, it wasn’t so much what as who. And the who was my mother, a lifelong mystery addict who passed her habit on to me. For which I will be forever grateful.

But what keeps me going back to mysteries (and writing mysteries) was perhaps best said Stephen Sondheim. Sondheim had a deep fascination with mysteries (which he often used in his work), pointing in particular to “Agatha Christie’s mysteries, the kinds of things where you know that it’s all going to be neatly wound up at the end and everything’s going to make logical sense. I think that’s why murder mysteries are popular, is this defense against chaos.” I’m with Mr. Sondheim on that!

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

AC: No, I am and always will be married to mysteries.

Kathy: Tell us about this first book in your new series.

AC: In short, it’s about Tory Van Dyne, a book conservator at Manhattan’s Mystery Guild Library, and a woman claiming to be Agatha Christie on holiday from the Great Beyond joining forces to catch a killer.

The longer version is that Tory is really not thrilled when she discovers a woman in the library’s Christie Room who then calmly introduces herself as Agatha Christie, politely requests a cocktail, and announces she’s there to help solve a murder—that has not yet happened.

But as soon as Tory determines that this is just a fairly nutty Christie fangirl, her socialite/actress cousin Nicola gets caught up in the suspicious death of her less-than-lovable talent agent. Nic, as always, looks to Tory for help. Tory, in turn, looks to Mrs. Christie. The woman, whoever or whatever she is, clearly knows her stuff when it comes to crime.

Aided by an unlikely band of fellow sleuths—including a snarky librarian, an eleven-year-old computer whiz, and an NYPD detective with terrible taste in suits—Tory and the woman claiming to be her very much deceased literary idol begin to unravel the twists and turns of a murderer’s devious mind. Because, in the immortal words of Miss Jane Marple, “murder is never simple.”

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

AC: I love them all. But I have to admit that Tory is closest to my heart. For one thing, she’s the most down-to-earth member of a decidedly eccentric old-money New York family, in that she actually has a job. Plus, she’s not yet over a fairly recent trauma. As a result, she’s determined to leave up-town society -- and that trauma -- behind and live basically as a recluse. Or what she calls “a safe, sane, sensible life.” But it’s not long before Tory realizes that “my safe, sane, sensible life was as dead as a body with a knife in its back in one of Dame Agatha’s own mysteries.” To watch Tory come back to life and back into life has been such a joy for me.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

AC: On the dead side, the Queen of Crime (obviously) and Dorothy L. Sayers (creator of the wonderful Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane mysteries). On the living side, Louise Penny (for her delightful -- and a little bit supernatural -- Three Pines/Inspector Gamache mysteries) and Anne Cleves (Vera anyone?).

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

AC: I’ve just discovered via my Kindle a wonderful series, the Mr. and Mrs. North mysteries, written in the 1930s and ‘40s by the husband-and-wife team of Frances and Richard Lockridge. Every book is clever and witty and features a remarkable number of cocktails imbibed while sleuthing. (I should point out that there are also more than a few cocktails imbibed in Mrs. Christie at the Mystery Guild Library.) I’m only on number 5 in the series out of 26 (!), so I am set for at least a couple of weeks (I read really, really fast.)

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

AC: Honestly, I’m the most boring person on earth. All I do is read. Mostly mysteries.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

AC: Cold-brew coffee, because how can anyone write a book without coffee? Real parmigiano Reggiano cheese to be freshly grated over pasta, because pretty much all I cook is pasta. A bottle of pinot grigio, because all that cocktail talk aside, I don’t really like cocktails. But I really like wine. And Irish butter, because it’s the best butter in the world and when there’s absolutely nothing left in the fridge to eat, you can always make pasta with butter and cheese. And have it with a glass of pinot grigio.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

AC: I’m already writing (actually, I’m almost finished with) Book Two of the series, which I am absolutely loving. And I’m coming up with ideas for more… Stay tuned!

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

AC: Honestly, my favorite thing about being an author is writing. It’s an absolute joy. I love coming up with new ways to kill people (haha, just kidding). But most of all, I love my characters. I have so much fun with them. Just wait until you meet Tory’s flighty actor cousin Nicola Van Dyne. (As Nic herself would say, “I love love love her.”) And Tory’s best friend, the exceedingly well dressed and very snarky librarian, Adrian Gooding, “who believes in exactly nothing, not even the keto diet.” And “the hot detective” as Adrian refers to Detective Sebastian Mendez-Cruz, kindly not taking off points for the unfortunate suits. And our eleven-year-old Irish computer whiz, Mairead Butler, unofficial secretary of what she insists on referring to as “Agatha Inc.” And finally, that absolutely charming crime-solving genius, Mrs. Christie herself, “whoever and whatever she might be.” I’ll leave that up to you…

Kathy: Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

It’s been an absolute pleasure! As Nic would say, I loved loved loved your questions.

MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY By Amanda Chapman
The First Mrs. Christie Mystery

Tory Van Dyne lives a quiet stable life. While she has some issues, that she is working through thank you very much, she is the normal one in her eccentric wealthy family. She's happy living and working in the townhome her grandmother gave her running the Mystery Guild Library on the main floors, working as a book conservator in the basement, and living in private quarters on the top floors. Tory starts to question her sanity when she meets a woman in the Christie Room, a woman who claims to be Agatha Christie herself! To top it off she says she's there to help solve a murder mystery! A poisoning sets off warning bells and when Tory's effervescent cousin, Nic's, agent dies they wonder. Could it be murder? When a second person dies under mysterious circumstances there's no longer much doubt. With the help of Mrs. Christie, Tory and her friends start to piece together the clues and work to solve a murder mystery!

I loved, loved, loved this book! Agatha Christie coming back to help solve a murder mystery. Quirky friends. Monied old New York. A smidge of romance. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, an incredibly complex, intricately plotted mystery. MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY delivers on all accounts!

I was delighted to meet Tory, a protagonist who's vulnerable, yet strong, naive, yet knowledgeable. Flighty Nic is charming, despite her faults, the hot detective is smart and kind in addition to being hot, Adrian is a wonderful foil, and Mairead is a very special kid! And then there's Agatha Christie herself. From Tory thinking Mrs. Christie must be a fan girl, well, fan woman, to Adrian who doesn't believe in anything, the progression of belief in Mrs. Christie is wonderful. More than helping solve a murder or two, Mrs. Christie helps people become better. The characters are all incredibly unique, each with their own foibles and strengths. Even the minor characters. I was most impressed with Norman and I can't forget the drag stewardesses.

I love how quotes are incorporated, not only at the start of a chapter, but in actual dialogue! The amount of research necessary to find just the right Agatha Christie quote to seamlessly and appropriately fit in conversation is somewhat awe inspiring!

Smart, funny, and able to tug at the heartstrings MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY is a phenomenal start to a new series.

About Amanda Chapman

Amanda Chapman (aka Amy Pershing) is a lifelong mystery lover and wordsmith. Under the name Amy Pershing, she is also the author of the Cape Cod Foodie mysteries. An enthusiastic fan of traditional mysteries and of New York City, she found herself wondering, “What if someone recreated Agatha Christie’s personal library -– even to the furnishings and architecture — in New York City? What would happen in that space?” And thus MRS. CHRISTIE AT THE MYSTERY GUILD LIBRARY -- the first in a new series -- was born.

Puzzles and Premieres - A Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Dr. Atticus Papadopoulos to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Atticus on the pages of the Magical Mystery Book Club Series by Elizabeth Pantley. PUZZLES AND PREMIERES is the tenth book in the series and was released

Atticus Talks about Jigsaw Puzzles

By Elizabeth Pantley, author of PUZZLES AND PREMIERES
Book 10 of the Magical Mystery Book Club Series

Good afternoon and thank you for hosting me today. I am Dr. Atticus Papadopoulos. I’m a professor and doctor of astrobiology; my major area of interest is extraterrestrial technology. I’m a member of a fascinating book club that journeys into cozy mystery books that are part of a massive collection held in an enchanted library. I am often sharing a bit of knowledge with our book club group about the various places to which we travel.

In this particular book journey, PUZZLES AND PREMIERES, jigsaw puzzles take center stage as they provide the clues to solving the murder mystery.

Assembling jigsaw puzzles is a very popular pastime. One study found that over 70% of adults in the United States enjoy puzzles. There are very few hobbies that have such a high percentage of interest.

In addition to providing relaxing entertainment, assembling a puzzle is an outstanding way to develop connections between the dendrites in your brain cells. It challenges your mind to recognize subtle differences in colors, patterns, and shapes. Its effects are so powerful that incorporating a puzzle routine into your life can even increase your IQ by a few points and stave off memory loss in your senior years.

Puzzles are also known to increase the production of dopamine, a chemical that regulates mood, memory, and concentration, giving you a jolt of that powerful chemical with every successful piece placed on the board.

Puzzles are far more than a game, they are an excellent addition to a healthy lifestyle, and they were an outstanding supplement to this murder mystery story.

PUZZLES AND PREMIERES by Elizabeth Pantley
The Tenth Magical Mystery Book Club Mystery

After a fun time making a snowman with snow swirling around them and members of the Magical Mystery Book Club are ready to choose a book to dive into for their next adventure. After everyone picked a few possibilities they're surprised to see Bob, the olm and Snapdragon Inn librarian, waiting for them. Following his suggestion they choose a cozy mystery set in a ski town that's hosting a film festival and are soon snuggled up in stylish snow gear with the Snapdragon Inn transformed into a chalet. Bob has provided them with treats, movie tickets, and most importantly jigsaw puzzles which provide clues. Soon the gang are meeting up with movie starts, publicists, and even a ghost from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Between enjoying the excitement of film premieres and eating plenty of snacks the crew will have to figure out what exactly the mystery is and how to solve it in order to get to The End!

It's always fun getting together with the Magical Mystery Club gang. From down to earth Paige to the outlandish Zell, talking cat, Frank, Mollie the ghost, and everyone else, the group has an exuberant dynamic and work together well. While they meet and interact with a lot of characters, PUZZLES AND PREMIERES also has them meet another ghost, Gloria. Were they there to solve her "accidental" death? Or will their mystery have something to do with the surprise announcement at the big premiere? As they complete jigsaw puzzles, the solutions send them to various locations around Jigsaw Valley where they work their magic to solve the mystery.

There wasn't as much emphasis on food in this tenth Magical Mystery Book Club Mystery and I found I sort of missed it. Some of the characters seemed more subdued and Moonglow was even a bit prickly! It's interesting to see a possible romance bloom and I loved how Mollie was able to share her ghostly knowledge with Gloria. All of the insider information about film festivals was fascinating and I enjoyed seeing everyone join in the fun of the festival as well as the investigation. After the mystery came to its conclusion there was a major surprise. While similar things have happened in the past the characters had extraordinarily good reasons for their choice, this one seemed much more arbitrary. Still, I enjoyed the book.

Grab your popcorn and dim the lights. Jigsaw puzzles, ghosts, and the excitement of a film festival make PUZZLES AND PREMIERES a fun mystery no matter the season!

Bodies and Battlements - A Review

 Review

BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS by Elizabeth Penney
The First Ravensea Castle Mystery

The Asquith Family have lived in Ravensea Castle for over a thousand years, but maintaining a castle is expensive and the family is barely scraping by. Despite her sister's misgivings and her brother's lack of interest Nora Asquith has decided to open the castle to the public as a small bed and breakfast. Despite newer resident Hilda Dibble trying to block her every step of the way, Nora finally succeeded and the castle is set to host its first guests. While the first night goes smoothly, despite the appearance of Hilda, things take an abrupt turn for the worse the next morning when Nora finds Hilda's body in the knot garden. Though Hilda couldn't prevent Ravensea from opening, her death could cause it to close! While the dishy guest who turns out to be the new Detective Inspector has taken charge of the case, Nora and her sister Tamsyn decide to investigate themselves. With a little help from their resident ghost the Asquith sisters will follow clues leading them to other townsfolk who had issues with the dead woman as well as to their other guests. Will they find the killer, or will they go out of business permanently?

BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS has it all, a castle by the Yorkshire seaside, a ghost, good food, a big lovable dog, and murder, not to mention a smidge of romance. To me these are perfect ingredients for a wonderful mystery and the first Ravensea Castle Mystery is just that. From a somewhat absent minded father, well known actress sister, and a faithful good natured cook along with her handyman husband to the varied guests and locals, everyone is interesting, multilayered, and important...even Sir Percival, the ghost. I enjoyed reading about Nora's herbal creations, witnessing the love of the Asquith family and friends, and seeing the romantic possibilities.

A delightful mystery comprised of charming characters, as well as some nasty ones, BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS is a stellar start to a new series.

Corsets and Casualties - A Review

 Review

CORSETS AND CASUALTIES by Gayle Leeson
The Sixth Ghostly Fashionista Mystery

Amanda Tucker is having fun designing retro inspired clothes and costumes for the upcoming Halloween holiday. When Ford shows her an old bible he bought at an estate sale Amanda is surprised to see familiar names, relatives of her ghostly friend, Max. One name, however, isn't familiar to the flapper. It turns out there was an aunt she never knew about. When Max's nephew and Amanda's grandfather go to the auction house to see if they can find other family items they're met with a police barricade-the owner has been shot! Amanda will have to piece together old family secrets and modern day family angst in order to discover more about Max's relatives. Will she find answers or will her curiosity get her killed?

Relationships are the bedrock of the Ghostly Fashionista Mystery series. Whether it's the loving familial relationships between Amanda and Grandpa as well as Dwight, Zoe, and Max or the romantic relationship between Amanda and Jason, or even the friendship between everyone at the Shops on Main, the care they have for each other makes for a brighter world and a more fulfilling read.

I truly love this series and find it heartwarming as well as funny. I'd like to hang out with these characters and I seriously want Amanda to design me an outfit! I know I'd be the elephant's eyebrows. The mystery, well, mysteries, were compelling and the subplots emotional. Red herrings lead readers to a variety of possible conclusions with various characters assisting with their suspicious behavior.

New family drama as well as old combine in CORSETS AND CASUALTIES, eventually bringing friends and family closer together in this charming mystery.

Wheels & Dirty Deals - A Spotlight, Excerpt, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to share an excerpt from Wheels & Dirty Deals, the sixth book in the Harper and Moon Investigations series by Trixie Silvertale.

 An Excerpt:

“Grams! Just because you traveled all over Europe with Max, your second of five
husbands, doesn’t mean taking Erick to Europe is going to end in our divorce!”

“It wasn’t divorce that ended Max and me.” The ghost of my not-as-dearly-
departed-as-everyone-thinks grandmother drifts toward the ceiling of the plush apartment, which lies hidden away behind the secret bookcase leading to the bookshop I inherited.

“I’m sorry for your loss, Grams.” An ache strangles my breath. I don’t even want to
imagine losing Erick . . . No. Nope.

Myrtle Isadora gazes down, her translucent eyes swirling with love and sorrow in
equal measure. “Max was undeniably himself. To the bitter end.” She sniffs sharply. “Who
knows? If I hadn’t lost my kidney in our tragic car accident, I might never have gotten
sober. Without my sobriety, I never would’ve had a chance to have a son. Without
Jacob . . .” Her ethereal voice drifts off.

You don’t have to be a psychic to pick up the unspoken thought. If my father had
never been born, I would never have been born. I’m not vain enough to think that the
world couldn’t survive without Mitzy Moon, but I know how full and wonderful my life has
been since discovering an unexpected family in almost-Canada.

“I wish you could’ve met my mother.” My gaze follows an osprey as it flies past the
window and reels out over the great lake tucked into the harbor behind Bell, Book &
Candle Bookshop. “Coraline Moon was everything I wanted to be when I grew up.”

Grams swooshes down from her high perch and wraps her glowing limbs around
me in a hum of loving energy. “Nonsense! You’re exactly who you’re meant to be.
Wonderful. Amazing. The very best granddaughter any grandmother could ever wish for.”
Ghost tears well in the corners of her eyes like storm surge against a dam, and I hop out
of the rolly chair in front of the computer as I slide from her ghostly embrace.

“No tears. You know I missed the chance to slip you an afterlife handkerchief.” We
share a wistful grin as we both recall the moment she almost faded away, and it took the
concerted effort of all those in the inner “ghost” circle to hold her on this side of the veil.

It’s no secret Adam and Lou were feuding and with the absence of a suspect, she’s the only one with a clear motive. After detective Dylan Finch, Lou’s longtime crush, reveals the murder weapon was a ceremonial dagger from Lou’s shop, she’s officially declared the prime suspect. Carousels and Characters - A Review

CAROUSELS AND CHARACTERS by Elizabeth Pantley
The Ninth Magical Mystery Book Club Mystery

Paige Erickson is just getting used to the fact that her best friend, who also happens to be her aunt, is gone. Not gone for good, but gone just the same  After an unexpected visit from her mom, who is her usual unhappy unaccepting self, Paige is more than ready for the Snapdragon Book Club's next adventure. Remembering happier times of her youth Paige picks a mystery set in a theme park. When the gang arrives Forrest is ready for the rides and Zell the food while everyone finds the animal themed park extraordinarily realistic. They soon realize their mission: to discover why things are disappearing-before the characters themselves cease to exist!

CAROUSELS AND CHARACTERS has the book club going to a very special theme park. Although I'm not one for wild rides myself, it was enjoyable seeing the various attractions here, and seeing some characters let their hair down and embrace some thrills. Me, I'll stick to the carousel. The mystery here is unique. There are no dead bodies, but pranks, some more dangerous and upsetting than others, that could lead to the end of the park and the creatures who live there as well. The ninth outing of the Snapdragon Book Club is set at a slower pace with few clues and an almost deus ex machina ending. Despite this, spending time with the gang is always enjoyable.

It's interesting to see the dynamics change with Glo gone and Cosmo now a part of the group. Paige no longer has another stable influence, nor her confidante. There may be an interesting development between her and Atticus. I'm not sure that would a good thing, but it would be nice for her to have someone to talk with about more serious subjects.

A theme park with unusual characters makes CAROUSELS AND CHARACTERS an entertaining adventure.

MEDITATION AND MISCHIEF by Elizabeth Pantley
The Eighth Magical Mystery Book Club Mystery

It's always exciting when members of the Magical Mystery Book Club choose a new cozy mystery to inhabit. Eschewing flying monkeys and vampires the group chooses to attend a college reunion at a wellness retreat on a tropical island. While there they'll be able to partake in workshops, spa treatments, as well as simply relax on the beach...and solve a murder!

In the eighth Magical Mystery Book Club mystery the friends become alumni of the Lake Minetonka Community College's School of Dramatic Arts, a perfect fit for this outgoing bunch. After a harrowing arrival they wonder when the murder will take place, but are perfectly content to join in all of the leisure activities in the meantime. Once the murder occurs they get some surprising help to weed through suspects and clues to find the killer, all while enjoying themselves.

The more books I read in this series the more I like it. Since the book club only reads cozy mysteries, that genre is explained and the author nails it on the head. While there is a mystery, and oft times a violent murder, the characters and setting are even more vital to the story. Readers care about these characters, even thinking of them as good friends. It's interesting to read about what they're doing...and thinking...even if it's not crucial to the plot. It makes them more real and adds interest and heart to the story. Atticus needs to relax and remember this! The mystery was great with lots of red herrings and a satisfying resolution. Apart from the mystery, the ending had a huge surprise that I never saw coming and I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. I'm definitely pleased about the second half of the surprise, but am still shocked by the first.

Friendship and laughter are the heart of MEDITATION AND MISCHIEF the mystery that makes enjoying your vacation as important as solving a murder.

A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor - A Spotlight

Today I'd like to shine a spotlight on a new release. A Fatal Feast at Bramsford Manor by Darci Hannah is the first book in the Food & Spirits Mystery series and was released this week!

Blurb:

It isn’t how chef Bridget “Bunny” MacBride imagined her own cooking show unfolding. But, if preparing historic meals with a modern flair is what it takes to get her cooking on the air, she can deliver, even if her dinner guest is a ghost. That’s the premise of the new reality TV show Food & Spirits, where Chef Bunny teams up with ghost hunter Brett Bloom and psychic medium Giff McGrady to visit haunted locales around the world and tempt lingering spirits back to the table with a beloved meal. For their first episode, the Food & Spirits team sets off to investigate Bramsford Manor, a historic house turned famously haunted hotel, in picturesque Hampshire, England. The sprawling estate is said to be home to the Mistletoe Bride, a young woman who died in the 18th century, the victim of a tragic accident on her Christmas wedding night.

Disliking spooks but loving food, Bunny leaves the spectral search to the pros and focuses on the feast, creating a traditional English holiday wedding dinner, complete with a gorgeous prime rib, Yorkshire pudding, and rustic apple tarts. It’s a sumptuous meal she hopes will entice the ghostly Mistletoe Bride to take a seat and join them while the cameras roll. But Bunny’s task is made more difficult when someone steals a boning knife from her custom kit. Alas, when the blade finally turns up again—in the chest of an all-too-human dinner guest—Bunny’s woes only grow as she is named a lead suspect in the case! Now, with a haunted house full of living residents, staff, and crew, Bunny will need the help of Brett, Giff, and her clairvoyant Grandma Mac, to solve this murder before the manor gains another ghost!

MAGICAL MYSTERY BOOK CLUB: BOX SET 1-3
By Elizabeth Pantley

This boxed set includes the first three books in the Magical Mystery Book Club series: SHIFTING AND SHENANIGANS, VAMPIRES AND VILLAINS, and COWBOYS AND CHAOS.

The series follows the adventures of Paige and her Aunt Glo as they inherit not only an inn, but it's magical library with the caveat they they continue a book club. Gaining members to the book club, they also gain friends; friends who become family. The eccentric group includes, among others, a feisty octogenarian, a teenager and his new age mom, and a talking cat! This book club is special, not only because of its members, but the fact that they actually go inside the cozy mysteries they choose and remain there until they solve the crime!

The Magical Mystery Book Club series is a totally unique series that turns a cozy mystery on its head and spins it around. If you think cozies are all the same, here's an author that totally breaks the mold, while still honoring the genre. Creative surprises abound while family and friendship remain constant.

Booked on Murder - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

BOOKED ON MURDER by Allison Brook
The Eighth Haunted Library Mystery

The countdown has begun. The wedding of Carrie Singleton and Dylan Avery is just two weeks away. Wedding preparations are keeping Carrie busy, so she's annoyed when her boss informs her she has to write an article for the newspaper about the library's latest discovery-the diary of Verity Babcock, a woman hung for witchcraft in 1652. Passion for the subject and fury that the woman was never exonerated soon tempers Carrie's annoyance and the article practical writes itself. Thrilled that their good friend, Victor, is letting them use his home as their wedding venue the couple check the property while he's away. While they determine the perfect seating arrangement, they also find something unexpected-the body of a murdered man in the backyard! Recently released from prison for bank robbery, it looks like he returned to dig up the stolen money-but someone killed him and took the loot. Was it his partners in crime, whose names he never divulged? Or maybe his cell mate who was also recently released? Carrie may be busy with her wedding plans and dealing with reactions to her article, but that won't stop her from trying to help police solve the murder before her wedding bells chime.

It's sad that this is the final book in the Haunted Library Mystery series. Carrie has grown in so many ways since she arrived in Clover Ridge and it's been a delight witnessing it. The series winds things up nicely, though I was looking forward to seeing them in their new house.

The characters and their relationships have always been the foundation of this series and it's no exception in BOOKED ON MURDER. Even the relationship between the secondary characters new to this book is significant. I love the relationship between Carrie and Dylan. They truly "get" each other and it's fun watching them work together, even if it's solving a crime on their wedding day! Seeing their friends and family gather together in celebration was delightful.

The eighth Haunted Library Mystery has three major components, though they do all intermingle. There's the murder, the diary, and the wedding. The mystery was compelling, the diary intriguing, and the wedding heartwarming. Blended together it made for a satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series.

Cooking to Death - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Marcy Blesy to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Marcy writes the Ghost Texter Paranormal Mystery series. COOKING TO DEATH is the first book in the series.

Kathy: In COOKING TO DEATH we meet Vivien Belcher, a twenty-four year old kindergarden teacher. Did you ever want to be a teacher? What grade level would you prefer?

MB: I am a former teacher! That's where a lot of my inspiration came from! I have taught kindergarten, fourth, and fifth grades. I was also an elementary school librarian for grades Pre-K through fourth grade. I have MANY years of experience in the schools.

Kathy: We also meet Kasper, Vivien's ex-boyfriend, who happens to be a ghost. Do you believe in ghosts? Have you ever had any ghostly encounters?

MB: I have had some strong feelings of being reminded of special people that they are still with me.

Kathy: Kasper is trapped in the Transitional World and has to atone for his many sins in life. Do you think this should be a requirement for all of the departed?

MB: No. That's not my thought process, but it was fun to fictionalize.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

MB: I loved watching Murder, She Wrote with Jessica Fletcher when I was young. I love the mystery, but I really like the ensemble casts and feel-good stories.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

MB: Yes! I wrote children's books for a decade, mostly early chapter books.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

MB: The Ghost Texter Paranormal Cozy Mystery Series: 24yo Kindergarten teacher, Vivien Belcher--Ms. B, for obvious reasons--is just trying to balance being a new teacher when her life is upended after she gets an unexpected text message from her jerk of an ex-boyfriend......her dead ex-boyfriend. Jealous ghosts only complicate things!

The Tucson Valley Retirement Community Cozy Mystery Series: 39yo Rosisophia Doroche Laruee, so named from her mother's beloved Golden Girls, has experienced some challenging knocks in life. A visit to her parents' 55+ retirement community is exactly what she needs for a reset. Surely there won't be any trouble. Surely.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

MB: I always love my protagonists. I loved writing about Vivien as I recalled my years in the classroom. Teaching is HARD. It's frazzling and frustrating and exhausting, but her love for the children always came through.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

MB: Yes, my Ghost Texter series was inspired by two things: One, my experience in the school system and Two, a TikTok video where a man received a phone call from his dad, but his dad had died years before. Unbeknowst to him, his mom had kept his dad's phone and used it sparingly. That experience sparked the idea of a texting ghost.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

MB: I've had a passion to write books for years. I write full-time now and love it.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

MB: Agatha Christie, Kristin Hannah, Mo Willems, Janet Evanovich

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

MB: THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF SAM HELL by Robert Dugoni

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

MB: I like to read and travel and take walks along the shores of Lake Michigan.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

MB: Coca-Cola, black cherry yogurt, eggs, muenster cheese

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

MB: Absolutely! Book 2 in the Ghost Texter Paranormal Series came out on July 25th. Book 3 should be out at the end of the year. I am writing book 7 in the Tucson Valley Retirement Community Cozy Mystery Series.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

MB: I love it when I'm stuck and find a way to make the pieces of the story come together like a beautiful puzzle.
