Death by Arts and Crafts - A Review

 Review

DEATH BY ARTS AND CRAFTS by Alexis Morgan
The Sixth Abby McCree Mystery

It’s summertime, time for craft shows to pop up all over the country. As a new member of Snowberry Creek’s City Council Abby McCree finds herself acting as liaison between the council and the planning committee for the town’s first arts and craft festival. Tasked with visiting several other festivals to scope out logistics and check in with the artists coming to their festival, Abby decides to make it a girl’s weekend having her friends, Dayna and Bridey, tag along. Although unable to speak with the iron worker headlining the Snowberry Creek show and odd vibes coming from Dayna regarding her ceramics partner, Abby considers the weekend a success. That is until she comes home to find her friend Gage needs to speak with her in his official capacity. The Chief of Police tells her that the iron working artist was murdered, his assistant is missing, and Abby may have been one of the last people to see them alive.

Abby McCree is one of my favorite protagonists of all time. She's smart, generous, is always baking snacks and feeding people, and she's not afraid to speak her mind. One of the things I like best about Abby is that she has no intention of getting involved in murder investigations. She doesn't go around sleuthing. Murders just happen around her. She doesn't back down, but she certainly doesn't go looking for trouble. I also love her relationship with the men in her life, including Zeke. She's a solid friend, and perhaps something more to Tripp. I love how their relationship is progressing! She also has good friendships with women too, the older ladies of the quilt club, and her besties Dayna and Bridey.

The mystery in the sixth Abby McCree Mystery compelling with higher stakes as relationships got more intense. I loved the variety of suspects and how the concurrent issues between Dayna and her business partner impacted the murder investigation.

An intricately plotted mystery and richly drawn characters make DEATH BY ARTS AND CRAFTS a fantastic read you won't want to put down.

Death by Intermission - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEATH BY INTERMISSION by Alexis Morgan
The Fourth Abby McCree Mystery

It's bad enough that Abby McCree is once again in charge of a committee, but she's also dealing with a visit from her mother. Abby's relationship with her mother is strained as Phoebe carries on with a relative stranger, but treats Abby as if she were a teenager. Things get more complicated when Abby and Phoebe find a dead body while cleaning up after the town's movie night. With her romantic interest a person of interest Phoebe goes on the warpath. Will Abby be able to rein her mom in, or will she be the one to blow her own top? With a young woman in the crosshairs of a killer, the two had better find a way to catch the murderer before they kill each other!

I really love this series and this book is a great example of just why. The mother/daughter dynamic in DEATH BY INTERMISSION is brilliantly written. Abby may be an adult, but living with her mom brings her right back to her teen-aged self. At times I wanted to throttle Phoebe and I was so proud when Abby stood up to her and fought back. I also feel the hurt that Abby felt when her mom said some of the things she did. But the two do love each other and I was cheering Phoebe on during the ultimate confrontation. I appreciate how Abby stands up for her friends and enjoy seeing the relationship between her and Tripp grow.

Intelligent, well developed characters, a smart well plotted mystery, a spark of romance, a sweet big dog, and laugh out loud moments make DEATH BY INTERMISSION a fantastic book that shouldn't be missed.

Death by Auction - A Review

Review

DEATH BY AUCTION by Alexis Morgan
The Third Abby McCree Mystery

Ever since inheriting her aunt's home and moving to Snowberry Creek, Washington, Abby McCree's life has been a hectic one full of committees. She's enjoying her current project to benefit the local veterans, however. Not only is it for a great cause, she has dream committee members making her work as chair easy, plus she gets to tease her tenant and friend Tripp, who will be auctioned off as one of the bachelors at the event. The auction primed to be a huge success as bids are going fast and high. The gaiety doesn't last as Abby and Tripp are both stunned by the surprise arrival of a woman from Tripp's past, not to mention the discovery of yet another dead body.

Forget about the dead body. The most troublesome part of the third Abby McCree Mystery is a new character by the name of Valerie. Of course, I despised her immediately and was aghast at what Abby was forced to deal with. I never would have put up with that, and dealing with it as graciously as she did...I absolutely love Abby, but boy, she is a much better person than I! Feelings of righteous indignation swept over me causing me to yell out loud at my book. More than once!

Aside from me yelling and wanting to cause bodily harm to a fictional character, I was intrigued by the mystery and the slow reveal as to how much of a jerk the victim truly was. I was also introduced to a new character I did like and hope we get to see more of in the future. It's the characters and their relationships with each other that really cement the book. These are complex people who you want to get to know and be around.

DEATH BY AUCTION was almost perfect. Unfortunately, at the very end the author used that too familiar and most annoying trope regarding the mental state of the killer. I was so disappointed as I couldn't have asked for more in a mystery before that point.

DEATH BY AUCTION is a mystery that will grab you and won't let go! The characters become family and it's a joy, albeit sometimes nerve-wracking, to read about their lives.

2019 - A Look Back

I'm excited to enter 2020 as I reminisce about the year 2019. I enjoyed welcoming new authors to the blog and renewing acquaintances with others. I discovered many new series and continued savoring many others. While the number of books I loved is too daunting to list...and I cannot commit to naming my top ten as there are too many variables to consider, I thought I'd at least make note of some favorites.

I was delighted to start several new series in 2019. A Dream of Death by Connie Berry, A Lady's Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman,  Peach Clobbered by Anna Gerard, And Then There Were Crumbs by Eve Calder, The House on Hallowed Ground by Nancy Cole Silverman, and Death by Committee by Alexis Morgan were real standouts!

I also really enjoyed Southern Sass and Killer Cravings by Kate Young, Steeped in Murder by Kirsten Weiss, Designs on Murder by Gayle Leeson, Belinda Blake and the Snake in the Grass by Heather Day Gilbert, Murder's No Votive Confidence by Christin Brecher, and Mrs. Morris and the Ghost by Traci Wilton.

Of course I couldn't wait for new books in series I already loved and was thrilled to read 3 books in Carolyn Haines' Pluto's Snitch Mystery series. I had only recently discovered this fantastic Gothic paranormal mystery series and caught up. The most recent book is A Visitation of Angels, which was the only one actually published in 2019. I was also excited to read the second Rose Gallagher Mystery by Erin Lindsey, A Golden Grave, another historical mystery with a paranormal bent. Speaking of historical mysteries, The Pearl Dagger by L.A Chandlar, Deadly Deception by Kate Parker, and both of Peg Cochran's follow ups in her Murder, She Reported series, Murder, She Uncovered and Murder, She Encountered were top notch.

Gigi Pandian's latest Jaya Jones mystery, The Glass Thief, made me giddy at the ending and Vivien Chien gave two new Noodle Shop mysteries leaving me constantly craving Chinese food. Two Barnabas Tew novels had me laughing at the bumbling Victorian detectives as they dealt with Mayan and Hindu gods. Sarah Fox gave another standout with her fifth Pancake House Mystery, Crepe Expectations and Lena Gregory's fourth Bay Island Psychic Mystery, Spirited Away, had me on the edge of my seat.

I look forward to jumping into the new releases of 2020 as well as books I may have missed!

Death by Jack-O'-Lantern - A Review

Review

DEATH BY JACK-O'-LANTERN by Alexis Morgan
The Second Abby McCree Mystery

As Halloween looms ever closer Abby McCree once again finds herself working on a slew of committees and her tenant, Tripp, has just volunteered her for another one! But committee work is halted when instead of a bunch of pumpkins she finds the body of the town curmudgeon. When a homeless veteran who Tripp is mentoring is wanted for questioning, Tripp refuses to help law enforcement find him, and instead finds himself in trouble with the law. As Abby once again finds herself embroiled in another murder she'll have to help Tripp and Kevin all while preparing the town for its trick or treat event!

I absolutely love this smart sassy series. Endearing characters with strength of character, determination, and unwavering loyalty inhabit its pages. I admire Abby and her attitude. She's smart and able to give as good as she gets. I love how she denies people her baked goods when they make her mad. Her interactions with Detective Earle had my jaw dropping, then had me laughing out loud. Her relationship with Tripp is heartwarming and I look forward to them realizing they're more than just good friends, although their friendship is undeniable. I also like Abby's relationship with Gage, indeed with the whole police department. Of course, Zeke adds another layer of adorableness, as well as loyalty.

The second Abby McCree Mystery is a story about loyalty and facades. For better or worse, people aren't always what they seem. And sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in, no matter the cost.

DEATH BY JACK-O'-LANTERN is a smart mystery with heart. The loyalty and good-natured bantering make me want to spend time with the people of Snowberry Creek...that and the baked goods. This book is an especially appealing autumnal read and I urge you to curl up with a copy.

Strange Blood - A Spotlight & Giveaway

As a departure from the usual Valentine's Day fare, I'd like to shine a spotlight on a work of non-fiction. STRANGE BLOOD: 70 ESSAYS ON OFFBEAT AND UNDERRATED VAMPIRE MOVIES edited by Vanessa Morgan. This book will be released April 2019.

Cover design: Gilles Vranckx

Blurb:

This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.

STRANGE BLOOD encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting.

Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you've ever seen in the world of vampires.

Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.

Death by Committee - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Alexis Morgan To Cozy Up With Kathy today. Alexis writes the Abby McCree Mystery series. DEATH BY COMMITTEE is the first book in the series and was released last month.

Kathy: In DEATH BY COMMITTEE Abby McCree finds herself serving on various committees. Have you had your fair share of committee work?

AM: I’ve served on committees in the past. Some were more fun than others. I love working with a group of people who pull together to meet a common goal. I’ve also gained insight into committees through the eyes of various friends who have become active in organizations that are near and dear to their hearts. I’m always amazed how much can be accomplished by a group determined to make a difference.

Kathy: I've always said I should get some goats to mow my lawn. Imagine my surprise when Abby hires a herd of goats to manage an overgrown blackberry patch! Have you ever used goats as gardeners?

AM: I haven’t personally “hired” goats myself, but someone in my neighborhood did a while back. I was driving home from the grocery store and passed a vacant lot on the next block over. They had put up temporary fencing and turned a flock of goats loose inside to help clear out a bunch of blackberry brambles. I’ve always had a special fondness for goats, so I stopped to watch them work. I decided then and there eventually I’d find a way to use that image in a book someday. I don’t know if goat rentals is a thing in many areas, but it definitely is here in the Pacific Northwest.

Kathy: I love Zeke! How did you decide on a mastiff mix to be Abby's inherited pet? Do you have any pets of your own?

AM: I have a blue and white parakeet named Nimbus. He lives in my office and keeps me company while I write. However, it was my two granddogs who were the real inspiration for Zeke. Walter and Remus are both bulldogs, and each one weighs about forty-five pounds. I sort of added them together to create Zeke at ninety-plus pounds. Then I gave him some of their more endearing characteristics—big jowls and their tendencies to snore, drool, and shed. They both love to sleep in sunbeams and are ever hopeful that someone will give them a snack.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

AM: I love stories with a strong central protagonist who is surrounded by an equally strong cast of secondary characters, especially with a hint of a romance developing over the course of the series. It makes me want to return to that world to catch up with old friends and to share the amateur sleuth’s next adventure.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

AM: My prior books have all been romances. I’ve written contemporary romances, paranormal and fantasy romances as well as American West historical romances.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

AM: The Abby McCree Mysteries: When Abby inherited her late aunt’s home in Snowberry Creek, she never expected to also inherit her aunt’s positions on a whole variety of committees in town. There’s only one problem: Abby wouldn’t mind fulfilling Aunt’s Sybil’s obligations quite so much if she didn’t keep stumbling over dead bodies along the way.

Snowberry Creek Romances: This series of three books and two novellas follow the story of three soldiers who served together in Afghanistan and are now transitioning back to civilian life.

The Paladins: This is my paranormal series about a group of modern warriors and the women who love them. Our world is separated from another one by an energy barrier that goes down when there is an earthquake or volcanic eruption. The Paladins fight to prevent the alien invaders from crossing over in a murderous rage. It’s a secret battle that has been going on for centuries.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

AM: Boy, that’s a hard question to answer. I love them all. Having said that, I had a great time writing about the three elderly women who were friends of Sybil, Abby McCree’s late aunt. Jean, Louise, and Glenda each have their own funny quirks. Really, don’t get me started on Jean and her love of tuna casseroles. Regardless, they’re such strong women and are there for Abby whenever she needs them, helping her transition to her new life in Snowberry Creek. Always curious and not above enjoying a good bit of gossip, they remind me of so many women I’ve known who form the backbone of the communities where they live.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

AM: I wanted to write a book about starting over. Abby has lost her marriage, her job, and her favorite aunt. She’s moved to Snowberry Creek to reevaluate her life and where she wants to go next. But she’s not the only one in the story whose life has changed. Tripp Blackston has recently left his life in the military behind. Now he’s learning how to be a civilian again while he’s going to college to finish his degree. Even Zeke has a new owner.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

AM: Years ago, I met Janice Kay Johnson, my first published author. As our friendship developed, I became fascinated by what she was doing. She’s the one who convinced me to try my own hand at writing a book. She mentored me through the process and then encouraged me to send my story out into the world. That first book didn’t sell, but my second one did. Not everyone can point to one specific person who changed her life, but Janice changed mine. She and I still meet for lunch regularly to brainstorm ideas, which is high-energy and great fun. We’ve plotted an awful lot of books over burgers and fries. <g>

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

AM: I adore books set in amazingly complex worlds. I’d love to sit down with Anne Bishop (The Others), Nalini Singh (The Psy-Changelings), Ilona Andrews (the husband/wife team who have written several great series), and J. R. R. Tolkien to see how they all approach the process of creating the universes that serve as backdrops for the stories they tell.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

AM: I just finished reading Karen White’s five book Tradd Street mystery series. It’s about a woman who sees ghosts and solves murders and other crimes that took place in the past.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

AM: I love reading and watching shows about geology. In fact, it was my interest in volcanoes and plate tectonics that inspired me to write my Paladins series. It helps that I live in the Pacific Northwest where volcanoes are part of the local landscape.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

AM: For starters, coconut milk, Ghirardelli’s Mocha Hot Chocolate Mix, and whipped cream. I combine those for either a relaxing hot drink at the end of the day or for a great cold drink. I also like to have guacamole in the fridge for a quick snack.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

AM: I have two more Abby McCree stories already in the works. The second one, DEATH BY JACK-O’-LANTERN, will be out late this summer. The third one is scheduled for release in 2020. Meanwhile, Abby keeps whispering that she has more stories she wants me to tell.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

AM: I love all the amazing people I’ve met over the years who share my love of reading great stories.

DEATH BY COMMITTEE by Alexis Morgan
The First Abby McCree Mystery

Abby McCree just inherited her favorite aunt's estate, but in addition to a lovely Victorian, she also received a somewhat moody, if hunky, tenant, a loving Mastiff mixed breed dog full of drool, and a position on numerous committees. If being volunteered to not only serve, but chair, all these groups doesn't kill her, what she found tidying up the property might. Dolly, her aunt's archrival wasn't enjoying Florida as a snowbird, she was buried under her aunt's blackberries! Abby's vowed to protect her aunt's good name, but doing so will land her right in the killer's sights!

I absolutely loved my first visit to Abby's world. Abby is a delightful protagonist. She's smart, at times snarky, sometimes vulnerable, but always loyal and thoughtful. Tripp is the ultimate brooding romantic interest while Zeke provides plenty of love himself...along with drool.

Aside from the great characters, the humor is another draw to this mystery. There are lots of snickers and outright laughs. I particularly love how the elderly ladies keep ogling Tripp. The mystery itself is not only intriguing, but well plotted, with lots of suspects, and well laid red herrings.

DEATH BY COMMITTEE is a super start to a fun to series. This first Abby McCree Mystery hits all the right marks with characters with whom you want to spend time, a hint of romance, a lovable dog, plenty of laughs, and a finely crafted mystery.
