Circle of Nine: Beltany - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY by Valerie Biel
The First in the Circle of Nine Series

Being a teenager is hard enough, but add to the fact that her mom is a practicing pagan makes things even more difficult for Brigit Quinn who yearns for a simple normal life. But her life is upended when her mom gives her an old family book on her 15th birthday. Brigit is immersed in the book, literally seeing it like a movie rather than reading words, and learns about her female ancestors, discovering that she is a member of the legendary Tuatha Dé Danann. If that weren't enough to blow her mind, the coolest senior and star of the basketball team is interested in her! Will she be able to handle her new life...even as someone wants to destroy it?

CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY is a story about finding yourself, being true to yourself and your family, and honoring the past as well as the present. While this is a young adult novel adults will enjoy it too, appreciating the stories of Brigit's elders perhaps even more that that of Brigit herself. I'm thankful my own high school experience wasn't as dramatic as Brigit's and I found myself more drawn to her mother.

Even though this is a coming of age story about Brigit, there are several other stories as well. I loved reading about the other Quinn women and was especially intrigued when learning about Brigit's grandmother and the problems with Adele, Tyler's grandmother.

Adventure, excitement, treachery, and growing pains infused with Celtic mythology and modern paganism combine to create a delightful tale that is CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY.

CIRCLE OF NINE: NOVELLA COLLECTION

CIRCLE OF NINE: NOVELLA COLLECTION

Return to the Celtic magic that began with the suspenseful, award-winning novel Circle of Nine – Beltany.

Descended from a legendary Celtic tribe that guards the secrets of the ancient stone circles, the Quinn women have a great responsibility to protect their pagan rituals and way of life. As members of the formidable Circle of Nine, they celebrate the holidays of the year from Yule to Samhain, keeping the traditions of the Tuatha de Danann alive through the centuries against insurmountable odds. We first met these women in Circle of Nine – Beltany, and now a set of three novellas reveals more of their engaging stories.

In Bressa’s Banishment the power struggle between Father Banan and village healer Bressa Gormley unfolds amidst accusations of treachery, heresy, and murder. Can the Circle protect their trusted healer and the path of the Tuatha against a growing religious fervor?

Dervla’s Destiny brings us to medieval Ireland where the beloved character Dervla Quinn learns of her gifts and fights tremendous loss, betrayal, and violence, all the while never giving up on finding the love she deserves.

In Phoebe's Mission, when an evil force on a quest for ultimate power threatens the Circle of Nine, Phoebe Quinn must leave Ireland for the first time and travel to the United States to protect their way of life. Along the way, she meets the handsome Macklin Scott, taking her mission, and possibly her future, on a far different course than expected.

As she trains for her place in the Circle of Nine, Brigit is determined to protect the secrets and sacred traditions of her people.

But when a cryptic warning arrives—hinting at a shadowy force hunting the Sacred Treasures—everything she’s fought for is suddenly at risk. If the ancient weapons fall into the wrong hands, The Circle could be shattered forever.

Haunted by doubts about her powers, the true intentions of those around her, and disturbing revelations about her family’s past, Brigit must navigate a dangerous path of betrayal, magic, and myth. The enemy is closer than anyone suspects—and time is running out. Can Brigit uncover the truth before darkness claims the Circle?

"The first time I summoned a portal, I didn’t understand how I accidentally opened a doorway to another realm. The second time wasn’t a mistake. I was ready—and I stepped through with the grim resolve that my mission must succeed." —Brigit Quinn

The sacred treasures are safe.
The enemies banished to the Otherworld.

But Brigit Quinn’s dreams tell a different story.

The condemned return to haunt her sleep—pleading, accusing, refusing to be forgotten. Something is still wrong, even if the rest of the Circle of Nine insists the threat has passed.

When anonymous warnings surface and the police begin asking questions about the missing, Brigit’s visions intensify, blurring the line between dream and prophecy. The Circle is unraveling. Shadows are gathering.

To restore what’s been broken, Brigit knows they must return to the Otherworld and seek answers from the immortal Elders—knowing that to question them is to risk everything.

Praise for Circle of Nine:

"This was a truly beautiful read. Valerie Biel has a captivating, almost lyrical quality to her work that helps the flow and the smoothness of the piece wonderfully. You can just feel the words slide along as you read and it's a remarkable experience. I enjoyed her storytelling as much as I enjoyed the characters and the plot! Circle of Nine: Beltany is a wonderful blend of present and past, mixed with a healthy dose of Celtic mythology to captivate the brainiacs among us."
~ FIVE STARS from Readers' Favorite for CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY

"Each story is intriguing and suspenseful. I enjoyed learning about three generations of strong, independent women, who were tasked with protecting their ancient heritage, and about the men who loved and supported them."

Circle of Nine Beltany - An Interview and Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Valerie Biel to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Valerie writes the Circle of Nine series. I hope you return to the blog Friday when I'll post my review of CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY, the first book in the series.

Kathy: In CIRCLE OF NINE: BELTANY we meet Brigit Quinn whose mom's pagan practices are the stuff of local gossip. Did your relatives ever cause gossip? Or do things that embarrassed a teenaged you?

VB: Oh, I live in a small town, and you wouldn’t believe the gossip! My closest relatives are not particular gossipers, but we all have those cousins who you know NOT to tell anything to—well unless you don’t mind everyone knowing in like 24 hours or so. My parents didn’t embarrass me much growing up. They were busy working and not as involved in my school life as we are today with our kids, so there were fewer opportunities for them to embarrass me!

Kathy: If you discovered that your ancestors had incredible abilities and you could inherit those powers if you chose, would you?

VB: Great question–I’d love to be able to go through portals and ride ley lines to other locations. Think of NOT having to fly coach anymore to far flung places. You’d save so much time!!

Kathy: Before writing this series were you familiar with Celtic legends and Irish mythology?

VB: The birth of the series really grew simultaneously with my knowledge of legends and mythology. That research fueled the writing idea I already had simmering after becoming enthralled with the Beltany Stone Circle in County Donegal.

Kathy: What first drew you to YA?

VB: I remember distinctly what it felt like to be a teen, and with the coming-of-age theme (or coming into your powers theme in my books) there’s just so much potential. It’s a wonderful jumping off point for a story with characters at the precipice of their adult lives.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

VB: I write suspense/mystery and crossover stories to adult fiction (that may have started as YA), and I also write middle grade novels.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

VB: The Circle of Nine series, which is being featured here, is a blend of Celtic myth, Irish legend, and magic all set within the mysticism of the ancient places of Ireland. It’s embedded in a modern-day storyline with a lot of historical content that follow the women who have been in the Circle of Nine through the centuries.

I also have a new series starting… the Chloe & Maggie Mysteries. Last year I published a murder mystery featuring 16-year-old Chloe, who is solving her dad’s murder. She teams up in subsequent novels with her Aunt Maggie, an investigative reporter, who is now her guardian.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

VB: It’s like asking about your own children–I LOVE them all. I swear!! (ha ha) I truly love my main characters, and I think you have to if you’re going to spend so much time with them. But for secondary characters, I really love the ‘guys’ my main characters like or love. Bodie, Brigit’s boyfriend in the Circle of Nine series is fun to write as is Jarvis in the Chloe and Maggie Mysteries. I also adore the strong women in the Circle of Nine series . . . Brigit’s mother and grandmother as well as many of her ancestors whom we get to know well.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

VB: Ha . . . I’d have a ghostly dinner party with Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Charlotte Bronte, and Mary Shelley. (Wouldn’t that be a hoot!?)

And for a lively living party, I’d love to hang out with Anne Patchett, Margaret Atwood, Roxanne Gay, and Colleen Hoover. (Can you imagine that conversation???)

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

VB: I Know What You Did by Cayce Osborne . . . for an upcoming book club discussion with her. (Our book club invites authors to join us for the discussion, which is a blast!)

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

VB: I have no time for hobbies! I am always writing or editing or helping other authors with their book marketing– no, seriously! I read a lot, and I binge TV shows. I have a rather fabulously messy garden that I tend once in a while, along with a ton of fruit trees/bushes that require attention when the fruit is ripe–so I do like to make jams and pies and all that good stuff. I channel my inner Martha Stewart or Joanna Gaines about 10% of the time when I’m hosting parties, but that’s about it!!

But the one thing that takes a lot of time, and I willingly give it, is travel. My husband and I are huge travelers–often we are in out-of-the-way places for our charity The World Orphan Fund. We have learned so very much!!

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

VB: Bread & butter pickles, Butter, Almond butter, Microwave popcorn. How random is THAT!?

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

VB: The Circle of Nine series will get two more books before its conclusion – and I don’t have a set number of books for the Chloe & Maggie Mysteries–I know I just need to get writing book two in order to actually make it a series!

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween! On this rainy All Hallow's Eve I thought I'd share some favorite spooky reads.

I don't read horror, but I do enjoy a spooky read once in a while. If you want something spine tingling good you need to read the Pluto Snitch Mystery series by Carolyn Haines. THE BOOK OF THE BELOVED is the first book in the series. While Carolyn does write cozy mysteries, this isn't one of them! I'd classify it as Southern Gothic. Speaking of Gothic, I just finished reading THE BELL TOLLS AT TRAEGER HALL by Jaime Jo Wright. You can check out my review Sunday!

If you're looking for a book set at Halloween you could try SHUDDER PULP by Vanessa Westermann, FRENCH QUARTER FRIGHT NIGHT by Ellen Byron, GHOST AND THE HAUNTED HOUSE by Carmen Radtke, ONE OF YOU by Lorie Lewis Ham, FATAL FUDGE SWIRL by Meri Allen or MINESTRONE MISCHIEF by Rosie Genova. You could also try TROUBLE BREWING by Heather Day Gilbert, DEATH RANG THE BELL by Carol Pouliot, MRS. MORRIS AND THE VAMPIRE by Traci Wilton, or MIDNIGHT SPELLS MURDER by Mary Angela.

If you enjoy reading about the Headless Horseman you're sure to appreciate THE LEGEND OF ACORN HOLLOW by Maureen Klovers.

If you want to mix Halloween and Christmas try MRS. CLAUS AND THE HALLOWEEN HOMICIDE by Liz Ireland.

Of course any paranormal mystery would fit the bill, but especially one set at Halloween like the sixth Ghostly Fashionista Mystery, CORSETS AND CASUALTIES by Gayle Leeson.

What about a whole series set in a town that is devoted to this holiday? CHAOS AT THE LAZY BONES BOOKSHOP by Emmeline Duncan is the first book in the Halloween Bookshop Mystery series.

There are so many wonderful books out there, books with ghosts, witches, and vampires, books set at Halloween, spooky books, funny books! No matter what kind of books you enjoy I hope you're able to curl up with a great one this Halloween!

Deadly Secrets at Ballyford Castle - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEADLY SECRETS AT BALLYFORD CASTLE by Ellen Butler
The Second Ariadne Winter Mystery

After a week reporting on fashion in 1950s Paris Ariadne Winter is pleased to stop over in Ireland. Invited by her cousin, she's attending the house party at Julia's boyfriend's ancestral home. The annual party is about to become something more when Cormac O'Connell announces his engagement to Julia. While Julia's parents are happy, Lady Aisling, Cormac's mother, has a more stoic reaction. That first evening at Ballyford Manor proves interesting as Ariadne witnesses more than one argument and plenty of furtive behavior. The next morning a visit to the cliffs turns into a tragic discovery when Julia, Ariadne, and Shane, Corman's dissolute brother, find the body of Brian Byrne, the estate manager, crumpled dead below the castle. A tragic accident? Ariadne isn't so sure. Nor is the inspector. Ariadne will look, listen, and hunt for clues in order to uncover O'Connell secrets and find a murderer!

Although set in 1958 DEADLY SECRETS AT BALLYFORD CASTLE reads as almost a modern tale, just with a lot more smoking and no cell phones. I really enjoyed the story and the mystery. Ariadne is a wonderful protagonist, clever and just nosy enough to discover truths others would rather left hidden. I love that Gavin made an appearance, inadvertently bringing answers that ultimately led to the solution. The O'Connell family is a hot mess. From the drunken second son and moody teenaged daughter to the demanding mother, all have secrets. I even got unpleasant vibes from Cormac,

I appreciate how Ariadne didn't take anything at face value. How she investigated herself and with Julia or Gavin, but always kept the inspector involved, at least once she's had a good look at whatever clue she found or theory she had. While I generally dislike stories told from multiple points of view, it works here. Each chapter is labeled with the character combined with the fact that everything is told in third person, it works. We get detailed information we wouldn't know if solely told from Ariadne's point of view.

DEADLY SECRETS AT BALLYFORD CASTLE is a delightful mystery that uncovers long held secrets in 1958 Ireland.

But amidst party prep excitement the festive mood at Ballyford Manor is shattered when a body is discovered among the ruins of the ancient castle grounds.

The local inspector suspects an accident—but Ariadne knows better.

Armed with her sharp wit and a reporter’s determination, Ariadne peels back the polished façade of the O’Connell family, uncovering simmering tensions and long-held grudges that refuse to stay buried. As she navigates a world of crumbling aristocracy, whispered scandals, and dark family legacies, Ariadne realizes someone will do anything to keep the past hidden — even if it means making her the next victim.

Mystery at an Irish Wedding - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Laura Cavanagh and Colin Vaughan to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Together, as L. C. Winters, they write the Half Moon Bay Mystery series. Mystery at an Irish Wedding is the first book in the series.

Kathy: In Mystery at an Irish Wedding, Clementine Moriarty returns to Half Moon Bay only to discover her ex-fiancé is getting married to her best friend, Charlotte. Have either of you faced a similar betrayal?

LCW: Thankfully, no! While we’ve both had our fair share of heartbreak and complicated friendships, we haven’t lived through that particular soap opera. But betrayal — whether romantic or platonic— is such a universal sting that it’s rich territory for a cozy mystery. Writing it gave us the perfect outlet for all those what-if scenarios and “I would have said…” moments.

Kathy: Many cultures have specific wedding traditions. What makes an Irish wedding special?

LCW: Irish weddings are warm, wild, and full of character. There’s a blend of tradition and mischief —handfasting ceremonies, Claddagh rings, and speeches that teeter between hilarity and heartfelt emotion. And of course, there’s always music. A proper Irish wedding isn’t complete without a bit of dancing and a few songs belted out in the wee hours. Sometimes the party continues through the night and most of the next day!

Kathy: Clementine's parents have a seaside art gallery. Do you like art? What types of paintings would you choose?

LCW: We love art, especially the kind that tells a story or captures a place’s soul. Coastal landscapes, folk art, and slightly quirky portraits tend to draw us in. If it’s something you could imagine in a cozy seaside town, it’s probably right up our alley. Much like Mason we are fascinated by the originality of conceptual art and its ability to place the audience in the creation.

Kathy: You write as a team. How does that work? Does one person work more on the plot while the other writes the actual words?

LCW: Yes — Laura is the main writer, and I (Colin) act as editor-in-chief, sounding board, and occasional plot wrangler. We talk through everything from murder motives to what Clementine’s wearing in chapter three. It’s a true collaboration and one we both treasure. Sometimes it’s tea and brainstorming; other times, it’s coffee and “Wait, does this make any sense?”

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

LCW: There’s something comforting about justice being served in a charming village with colourful characters. We grew up loving whodunnits — Agatha Christie, Murder, She Wrote, all of it. Cozy mysteries are the literary equivalent of a cuppa on a rainy day.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

LCW: Yes! We’ve also dipped into fantasy and folklore, blending myth and modern life. But no matter the genre, there’s always a mystery at the heart of the story. We just can’t resist a good puzzle.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

LCW: The Half Moon Bay Mysteries follow Clementine Moriarty, an amateur sleuth with a flair for fashion and a knack for stumbling into trouble in her hometown on the Irish coast. It’s full of charm, humour, small-town secrets — and a few unexpected murders. We also have other books in the works that mix mystery with fantasy, folklore, and even a touch of the supernatural.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

LCW: Mason Hughes, the local detective, is a favourite. He’s stoic but secretly funny, and his loyalty to Clementine makes him a rock in the storm. Plus, he has a pet fox named Mulder, and that kind of says it all.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

LCW: Yes, we wanted to write the kind of mystery we love to read: character-driven, slightly eccentric, with a strong sense of place. Ireland’s west coast was a big inspiration. There’s something both timeless and mysterious about a seaside village where everyone knows your name (and your secrets).

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

LCW: We’d been writing stories for ourselves for years, but at some point, we thought — why not share them? Life’s too short to keep your sleuths to yourself. Self-publishing gave us the freedom to tell the stories exactly the way we wanted to.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

LCW: Agatha Christie (for the mystery), Terry Pratchett (for the wit), Maeve Binchy (for the warmth), and Tana French (for the atmosphere). It would be an unforgettable night.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

LCW: Right now, we’re reading The Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman. Witty, heartfelt, and clever — the perfect cozy crime with a twist.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

LCW: Aside from writing and reading? We love beach walks, puzzles, and creating games with our daughter. We have a background in coding and app development so it’s good to keep those skills active!

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

LCW: Tea (we’re Irish — it’s non-negotiable), oat milk, pasta, and something sweet, usually chocolate.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

LCW: Absolutely. The next Half Moon Bay mystery is due for release in July, and we have another three in the works. We’re developing a new series with a supernatural twist which will be released later in the summer.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

LCW: Hearing from readers who connected with a character, laughed at a line, or couldn’t put the book down. There’s nothing more rewarding than knowing your story brought someone joy — or kept them guessing until the last page.
