Bodies and Battlements - A Review

 Review

BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS by Elizabeth Penney
The First Ravensea Castle Mystery

The Asquith Family have lived in Ravensea Castle for over a thousand years, but maintaining a castle is expensive and the family is barely scraping by. Despite her sister's misgivings and her brother's lack of interest Nora Asquith has decided to open the castle to the public as a small bed and breakfast. Despite newer resident Hilda Dibble trying to block her every step of the way, Nora finally succeeded and the castle is set to host its first guests. While the first night goes smoothly, despite the appearance of Hilda, things take an abrupt turn for the worse the next morning when Nora finds Hilda's body in the knot garden. Though Hilda couldn't prevent Ravensea from opening, her death could cause it to close! While the dishy guest who turns out to be the new Detective Inspector has taken charge of the case, Nora and her sister Tamsyn decide to investigate themselves. With a little help from their resident ghost the Asquith sisters will follow clues leading them to other townsfolk who had issues with the dead woman as well as to their other guests. Will they find the killer, or will they go out of business permanently?

BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS has it all, a castle by the Yorkshire seaside, a ghost, good food, a big lovable dog, and murder, not to mention a smidge of romance. To me these are perfect ingredients for a wonderful mystery and the first Ravensea Castle Mystery is just that. From a somewhat absent minded father, well known actress sister, and a faithful good natured cook along with her handyman husband to the varied guests and locals, everyone is interesting, multilayered, and important...even Sir Percival, the ghost. I enjoyed reading about Nora's herbal creations, witnessing the love of the Asquith family and friends, and seeing the romantic possibilities.

A delightful mystery comprised of charming characters, as well as some nasty ones, BODIES AND BATTLEMENTS is a stellar start to a new series.

Beds, Breakfasts, and Beta Blockers - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Jann Franklin to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Jann writes the Three Dog Mystery series. BEDS, BREAKFASTS, AND BETA BLOCKERS is the first book in the series.

Kathy: In BEDS, BREAKFASTS, AND BETA BLOCKERS Ro Bergeron inherits her childhood home and decides to open a bed and breakfast for humans and their canine friends. I tell my mom I'm going to keep my childhood home and turn it into the Kathy Museum. What is the status of your childhood home? Would you keep it if you could?
JF: My parents sold my childhood home when they moved to be closer to me I visited it recently, in Russellville AR with my husband. He turned to me and said “I had no idea you grew up rich.” I said, “Neither did I.” My parents couldn’t afford to live in that house now, if they bought it. But it’s nice to see that my childhood home went wayyyy up in value and didn’t turn into a bad neighborhood

Kathy: Ro can’t boil an egg or keep a plant alive, yet she intends to open a B&B. Have you ever tried something despite being totally unqualified?

JF: HA! Yes…motherhood. But my boys turned out well, despite my total lack of skills and training.

Kathy: I love the fact that the B&B will welcome canine friends too. At the moment I just share my home with my cats who would not want to travel. Do you have any pets? Do they travel with you?

JF: The dogs in my book are literally my dogs! Sadie travels with us. If you read the passages in the story about Rebel and Ruger , you’d know why we don’t take the Labs

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

JF: I LOVE Murder She Wrote, Psych, Monk. And the older series Hart to Hart, McMillan and Wife, Rockford Files. They’re all about the puzzle-not the forensics. And no violence or graphic content. It’s what I love and it’s what I write

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

JF: I always said I can’t write romance. But…I just finished a short story telling my in-laws’ love story. It will be included in a short story collection with other authors this December, called “Love For Keeps.” I am also working on another completely fictional short love story. So…maybe I will be led to write some romance books at some point.

I also have a trilogy in the small town genre-a woman is dragged from the big city to a small town by her husband-it’s Jen’s fish out of water story of how she finds her place. It’s the Small Town Girl series (TRADING BRIGHT LIGHTS FOR LIGHTNING BUGS, SHINING STARS AND MASON JARS, CHEESE GRITS AND HISSY FITS).

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

JF: This is my first in series. Ro has been sheltered - never encouraged to spread her wings and fly. The ones who raised her have passed on, and she’s decided to venture out into the world, by opening her bed and breakfast. Her great aunts drag her into a murder case, fancying themselves as Jessica Fletcher, but Ro finds she enjoys it. The 2nd will be out in September -INNKEEPERS AND IMPOSTERS.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

JF: Yes-twins. I love writing the 70 year old twins, Min and Win. They don’t care what people think and are self appointed matriarchs of the small town of Belle Bayou. That seems wonderful to me-just doing whatever you want and saying what you think. They come across mean sometimes but their hearts are on the right place.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

JF: Several! Our 300 person town has a bed and breakfast and I’m friends with the innkeeper. I’ve heard stories! I thought constant flow of new people would add to a traditional cozy mystery.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

JF: My husband said my writing is good and I should publish a book. He had no idea of the monster he was creating!

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?
JF: Ooh! Jane Austen and Agatha Christie for sure!! Agatha is the OG of cozy mysteries And then Harlem Coben and Lee Childs-they are author royalty to me. And Tosca Lee because she’s so nice - I’ve met her before and she’s wonderful. She’d probably stay after and help me do the dishes

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

JF: Jonathan Kellerman’s CRIME SCENE. Our library had books on sale for a quarter and I’m a sucker for a good deal.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

JF: Uh, well , my hobbies are my loved ones. I spend any free time with my husband, 2 sons and DILs, dogs, chickens, friends. Our small town always has something fun going on and we try to be there.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

JF: Eggs-thank you chickens! Nonfat yogurt, popcorn and Bluebell vanilla ice cream. Most meals are a freefall, Sunday evenings are always popcorn and ice cream.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

JF: Oh my gosh YES! I have a new series coming out this year, Letters to Santa. The first book, THE CASE OF THE MISSING SISTER, will be out in July. Then another book every year around Thanksgiving. I plan to continue both of my series Small Town Girl Mysteries (Book 6 in June) and Three Dog Mysteries (Book 2 in September) I want to write another series about a couple with a food truck who solves mysteries as they travel to festivals, the Grab n’ Go Mysteries. Just got to find the time….

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

JF: My readers - they are so lovely! I pose a question to my newsletter subscribers and they email the most wonderful stories-and receive a free book for their time. I also love interacting on social media.

BEDS, BREAKFASTS, AND BETA BLOCKERS by Jann Franklin
The First Three Dog Mystery

Rose Louise Bergeron is different. Some might call her weird. Having been raised by her grandparents after her parents ran off she prefers classic movies and real books to pop culture and e-readers. An old soul she's content to remain in the small town of Belle Bayou, Louisiana. Now that her grandparents have both died, Ro decided to turn the family home into a B&B, one that welcomes dogs as well as people. Never mind that she doesn't know how to cook. Or that she knows nothing about dogs. She's booked her first guests and she's ready to learn! While she's preparing to become a business woman the talk around town is the suspicious death of Mr. Tippin, Ro's high school algebra teacher. Was it murder? Ro's great aunts are determined to find out, roping Ro into their investigation. It can't be that hard to learn how to cook, corral a posse of dogs, host paying guests, and solve a murder. Can it?

Admittedly, I wasn't too sure about Rose Louise at first. Her naivete was a bit much. But as I continued reading she really grew on me, as naive and silly as she was, she truly cared and wanted to improve and make it on her own. She had just never been given the tools to do so. Aunties Min and Win are an absolute hoot and I love how they can be genteel southern ladies and yet are true crime mavens to boot! Poor cousin Marshall, a rare voice of reason. And what a couple Ro's first guests are. I loved how they fit right in! And I absolutely love Sadie and the coyotes! I hope we get to meet Cousin Rooster in future books. While some of the premises are indeed silly, they lightened my heart and made me laugh! I'm still giggling about the reason for the change in church service times.

While the murder was mentioned early on at first Ro wasn't involved in investigating at all. Heaven knows she had enough on her plate. However, with pushes from her great aunts, also known as the Bossies, and her guests Mr. and Mrs. Macintosh, Ro becomes a reluctant sleuth. Although soon, she's not that reluctant! I love how they all worked together as a team, harebrained schemes and all!

Quirky characters and laugh out loud moments make BEDS, BREAKFASTS, AND BETA BLOCKERS a delightfully funny romp through small town Louisiana.

Framed for Murder - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Marla A. White to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Marla writes the Pine Cove Mystery series. FRAMED FOR MURDER is the first book in the series and was released last week.

Kathy: In FRAMED FOR MURDER we meet Mel O’Rourke who runs a B & B. Have you ever wanted to run a B & B?

MAW: Of the many things I’ve wanted to do in life, running a hotel has never really been one of them. Which, come to think of it, is kind of odd considering two of my book series are set in hotels and have main characters who run them. Now a quilting store or a vineyard, that I might do!

Kathy: Mel suffered a life changing injury. Have you ever had an injury of health issues that changed your life?

MAW: Changed my life would be an overstatement, I think. I was going up a small up bank (a jump) on my horse. He was overly exuberant about it, and I tumbled off his butt, landing on my tailbone and my head. Thankfully, my head is harder than my tailbone. I still have more “junk in my trunk” than was factory installed as a result of it, if you know what I mean. It swelled so much I couldn’t wear regular pants! It still feels like I’m lying on a potato when I do yoga.

A shout out as well for an issue that doesn’t get much attention for women; I have Dupuytren's contracture, also known by the much cooler name of Viking Disease. John Elway gets all the notoriety, but women can get it to. For me, I’ve got a pinky that’s shaped like a 7 so it’s a pain in the neck to put gloves on, but like I said, life changing might be over stating it.

Kathy: Poppy Phillips is a frenemy to Mel. Have you ever had a frenemy?

MAW: That is an excellent question. I had to think about it long and hard, but I can’t really think of any. I tend to lean into either you’re a friend, or I just don’t have the band width to think that much about you. The enemy thing takes more energy than I have, LOL.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

MAW: I didn’t want to have to learn cop procedures? Just kidding. I think one of the first books I read was a Nancy Drew mystery, so detectives out of uniform who can make up the rules as they go along have always been appealing. Rex Stout’s Nero Wolf, Robert Parker’s Spenser, and of course the great Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum all got to solve crimes but bend a few laws along the way. Dick Francis mysteries were a huge influence as well. My first full-length novel from The Wild Rose Press, “Cause for Elimination,” has a cop as one of the main characters, but there’s also Emily Conners, professional horse trainer and part-time snoop.

But what, in my mind, sets a true cozy apart is the small town setting where, like “Cheers,” everybody knows your name. Pine Cove is very heavily influenced by the real town of Idyllwild, California that has a dog for a mayor and two major streets. There’s something very comforting reading them. Nothing truly bad will happen (unless you count the dead person who usually opens the story) and often times there’s a little romance along the way. It’s a nice break from real life.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

MAW: Nobody told me you weren’t supposed to until it was too late! After I wrote “Cause” and put it in a drawer for ten years so no one could reject it, I visited a historic hotel in Southern California and was inspired to write a contemporary fantasy. The angel Gabriel wakes up in Jurupa just outside of Riverside naked, wingless, and no memory of why he’s there. It was so much fun writing those books because even the laws of physics don’t apply to angels, demons, and dragons.

I’m also working with a friend on a hockey romance series. I’m new to hockey and romance books so it’s been a wild ride learning about both.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

MAW: I love writing series because I get too attached to the characters to ever say goodbye!

The Pine Cove mysteries, of which Framed is the first, started with the novella “The Starlight Mint Surprise Murder” and is centered on the quirky little town of Pine Cove. Mel has to deal with starting over in a new life, a newly acquired fear of heights, a possible love triangle, and the occasional dead body.

“The Keeper Chronicles” features Gabriel, his lover and ex-demon(ish) Evie, and their human friends Abby and Ryan. After unseen forces make Abby the Keeper of a Book of Power, the foursome is tasked with saving the world from increasingly larger disasters, including a visit from Gabriel’s vexing siblings, the other archangels.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

MAW: I don’t think I do. I like to believe they’re all very different and self-evolved. For instance, Dearg in “Cause” was meant to only be in one or two scenes but he kind of demanded his own storyline. And book, but that’s a work in progress.

At this moment, if I had to pick it would be Lucifer. Yes, that Lucifer. Because in his mind it’s okay if he kills his brother, but Father forbid someone else tries. Stung by his family’s rejection, he does whatever he wants and couldn’t care less what anyone thinks. Until he does.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

MAW: Visits to Idyllwild and staying in the fictional version of The Babbling Brook kind of demanded a story be set there. The Wild Rose Press put out a call for their “cookie books” – a book of any genre with a cookie at the heart of the story. I couldn’t get my mom’s Starlight Mint Surprise cookie recipe right to save my life so that triggered the story, I’d just come home from a trip to Idyllwild, which gave me the perfect setting, and I love mysteries so it all kind of came together from there.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

MAW: One hundred percent it was my friend, who told me about the cookie books, having such a great experience with The Wild Rose Press. Like I said, "Cause” was filed away for years because I didn’t have the balls of Stephen King or F. Scott Fitzgerald who allegedly papered his walls with his rejection slips. (That notion is attributed to many writers, by the way, so maybe more than one actually did it?)

When my editor for “Starlight” asked if I had anything else, my first thought was “no” and then my friend had to remind me I had a whole dang book waiting to be found!

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

MAW: Neil Gaiman seems like a hoot, I’ve actually met Janet Evanovich once and I know she’s lovely, Leslie Charteris who wrote “The Saint” books because I enjoy the way his mind works, and Jim Butcher because his Dresden books were mind-shifting about what fantasy could be.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

MAW: I love gardening, quilting, and putting together jigsaw puzzles to the point of putting my back out because I’ll hunch over the pieces for hours. Newly a fan of hockey, which is hard to be this season because the LA Kings just broke my heart. And of course, reading!

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

MAW: Hmmm, another good question. I’ll go with the essentials of eggs, bacon, bread, and whiskey. The last one has its own cabinet, of course. The fridge would be a silly place to keep that!

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

MAW: The rough draft of the next Pine Cove book is finished but I want to give it some breathing room before I come back to it. “Cause” was always meant to be a series and Lucifer wants his book to be written as well. There are only so many hours in a day, even when you get up at 5:30am to write. There’s this pesky job thing that keeps demanding at least eight hours a day. Ugh.

Kathy: What’s your favorite thing about being an author?

MAW: The easy flow of money and fame? (Not!) I love creating things that didn’t exist before I came along. Very rarely does the blank page freak me out. If I had to write on a typewriter I’d probably feel very differently, but the way computers make it so easy to change your mind about a word, sentence, or storyline I find to be very freeing.

Also, research. It’s crazy, but again the internet makes it so easy to find out things like how long a person can be frozen and still be revived or what does Slovenia celebrate instead of Thanksgiving. I love finding out weird factoids, swear words in other languages.

FRAMED FOR MURDER by Marla A. White
The First Pine Cove Mystery

Injured in the line of duty, Emmaline O'Rourke was forced to leave her career in law enforcement behind and, with the help of her family, open a B&B in the quaint and quirky town of Pine Cove. After seeing an unknown car outside she’s stunned to find a woman in her kitchen, Poppy the cat burglar. The very thief she was chasing when she was hurt and also the same thief who saved her life. It turns out that Poppy may have been set up when a standard heist turned into anything but when Poppy stumbled over a dead body. Now police are searching for “The Ghost” while she’s trying to lay low. Believing her to be a thief, but not a killer, Mel agrees to let Poppy stay. After all the woman can cook much better than Mel and is willing to work at the B&B. All Mel has to do is keep the Sheriff from discovering her true identity while investigating the murder herself.

Although this is the first book in the Pine Cove Mystery series there were lots of references to a murder and things that happened establishing several relationships prior to the start of this book. I was a bit confused as it was reading more like the second in the series than the first. I've since learned that there is a short story prequel wherein all this action happened. I would have liked to read that first as I felt I was missing something all through FRAMED FOR MURDER. Still this book is a complete mystery unto itself and I wasn't missing anything vital. I will have to find and read the short story!

I really like Mel. With all her foibles she's still a likeable, relatable protagonist, even though I did want to smack her a few times. Talk to the man-don't act like a teenager. Poppy is by far my favorite character though. Stylish, smart, a woman who truly created herself. Grandma O is a hoot and I truly like the rest of the supporting cast, except for the horrible mayor's wife. While I like the two men in Mel's romantic scope, I'm not particularly fond of love triangles, so we'll have to see how this plays out.

As a former cop myself, I see how Mel wants to get involved in the investigation as well as her frustration in the way that the sheriff treats her. I enjoyed the mystery and how Mel and Poppy went about solving this complex mystery...as well as figuring out how to run the B&B.

With a lot of wit, engaging characters, and entangled relationships FRAMED FOR MURDER is a delightful start to a new series.

After a life-changing injury, Mel O’Rourke trades in her badge for bed sheets, running a B & B in the quirky mountain town of Pine Cove. Her peaceful life is interrupted when an old frenemy, the notorious and charismatic cat burglar, Poppy Phillips, shows up on her doorstep, claiming she’s been framed for murder. While she’s broken plenty of laws, Mel knows she’d never kill anyone. Good thing she’s a better detective than she is a cook as she sets out to prove Poppy's innocence.

The situation gets complicated, however, when the ruggedly handsome Deputy Sheriff Gregg Marks flirts with Mel, bringing him dangerously close to the criminal she’s hiding. And just when her friendship with café owner Jackson Thibodeaux blossoms into something more, he’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime in New Orleans. Should she encourage him to go, or ask him to stay? Who knew romance could be just as hard to solve as murder?

About Marla A. White

Marla White is an award-winning novelist who prefers killing people who annoy her on paper rather than in real life. Her first full-length mystery novel, “Cause for Elimination,” placed in several contests including Killer Nashville, The RONE Awards, The Reader’s Favorite, and finishing second in the Orange County Romance Writers for Romantic Suspense. Originally from Oklahoma, she lived in a lot of other states before settling down in Los Angeles to work in the television industry. She currently teaches at UCLA Extension and gives seminars about the art of script coverage. When she’s not working on the next book, she’s out in the garden, hiking, cheering on the LA Kings, or discovering new craft cocktails.

Fun facts Something readers might find interesting about this book:

The quirky Babbling Brook Bed-and-Breakfast is loosely inspired by the Silver Pines Lodge in Idyllwild. Highly recommend staying there if you’re even in that neck of the woods.

A fact about me that readers might find interesting:

I share Mel’s nearly debilitating fear of heights. Well, not to the same extent, I can climb a set of stairs, but looking down more than a few flights? No way 😀

There’s a scene where Mel does a singing bowl session. I’ve done that and honestly, it’s pretty cool!

I accomplished the dream of becoming a published writer in my late fifties after helping other writers craft their stories for thirty years.

Peril in Pink - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Sydney Leigh to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Sydney writes the Hudson Valley B&B Mystery series. Peril in Pink is the first book in the series and was released last month.

Kathy: In Peril in Pink we meet Jess Byrne, owner of The Pearl B&B in Hudson Valley. Have you ever wanted to own a B&B?

SL: I’m not the best cook so not a B&B, but a small boutique motel? Absolutely!

Kathy: For The Pearl's grand opening Jess has arranged for her ex-boyfriend, a reality singing sensation, to perform. Have you ever worked with an ex?

SL: In high school I worked with an ex-boyfriend at a restaurant. It started out a little rocky but we managed to sort things out and develop a friendship after a while.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

SL: The punny titles. I’ve always loved mysteries but when I started to notice the hilarious titles that cozies often have, I was sold.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

SL: No, I love to sprinkle in a little romance but I love the whodunnit factor that mysteries have in them.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

SL: The Hudson Valley B&B Mystery series is a modern take on a classic genre. It’s set at a B&B and follows the lives and deaths of the people of Fletcher Lake in the Hudson Valley, in particular Jess Byrne and her best friend/business partner, Kat Miller. It’s been describe as Schitt’s Creek meets Only Murders in the Building.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

SL: I really like Aunt Marnie. She’s Jess’s aunt and a former deadhead who followed around the Grateful Dead for years. Still a free spirit, she adds humor and heart to the book.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

SL: There is a show on Netflix called Motel Makeover about two women who gave up their corporate careers to buy an old fishing lodge and turn it into a modern motel. It had me from the first episode and I knew it was the perfect setting for my mystery series.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

SL: I’ve always dreamed of seeing my books in bookstores and sharing my stories with readers. It’s a dream come true.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

SL: Ohhh, tough question. 1. Jane Austen 2. Agatha Christie 3. Hannah Mary McKinnon 4. Emily Henry

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

SL: Book Lovers, Emily Henry

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

SL: Aside from spending time with friends and family, I love to read, watch movies, and plot books while doing jigsaw puzzles.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

SL: Coffee, tea, fruit, and cheese.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

SL: I’m working on the second book in the Hudson Valley B&B series. I also have a brand new series publishing with Level Best Books coming out in June.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

SL: Creating characters and sharing stories.

Mrs. Morris and the Mermaid - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

MRS. MORRIS AND THE MERMAID by Traci Wilton
The Eighth Salem B&B Mystery

Charlene Morris is thrilled to have a full house at her B&B. Her guests are in Salem for the city's first Mermaid parade. Brandy Flint, Charlene's friend and resident witch, managed to bring the recluse and star of the famed mermaid movie Sirena into town to celebrate the film's anniversary. The stars from the recent reboot of the film have also arrived and rabid fans are taking sides. When Charlene discovers a major player dead, the whole event could be washed away. With the help of her ghostly best friend Charlene will have to uncover the murderer and make sure this first Mermaid event is not the last.

Many people forget that the word fan comes from the word fanatic. Instead of merely liking and showing appreciation, fanatics take things to the next level and are excessive in their devotion. While MRS. MORRIS AND AND THE MERMAID has some fans, it also has a host of true fanatics whose beliefs and actions lead to murder.

I always enjoy visiting Charlene's B&B. She treats her guests like family. In fact her hospitality can be a bit over the top, being overprotective of her guests and wanting their every needs met. I certainly wouldn't pass up Millie's cooking, however, and wish I had her and Will taking care of my home!

Several suspects and lots of bad behavior, along with stars who are too high and mighty populate the pages of MRS. MORRIS AND THE MERMAID. Even our victim wasn't that nice. And I certainly wanted to smack the smirks off the young stars of the reboot. As for the fan club presidents...whoo boy.

In addition to the murder, there's a good deal of personal drama in the eighth Salem B&B Mystery. Charlene is starting to open her heart up to romance with Sam, but is sneaking around and not being completely honest a true relationship? And then there's Jack. No spoilers, but what an ending.

Movie stars, mermaids, and murder combine in a unique mystery, decades in the making. MRS. MORRIS AND THE MERMAID is a delightful tale that questions your ability to truly know someone.

Retired Hollywood actress Trinity Powers has even agreed to appear on the lead float to commemorate her breakout role as the eponymous mermaid in the blockbuster cult classic, Sirena. The parade also features Trinity’s rival, an up-and-coming ingénue, who stars in the film’s recent (and somewhat controversial) reboot. Dead Wrong - A Spotlight

Today I'd like to shine a spotlight on a book that Amazon recommended for me. It was actually the third book in the series, but I thought I'd share the first book in the series. DEAD WRONG by Vannetta Chapman is the first book in the Agatha's Amish B&B Mystery series.

 Blurb:

Who killed Russell Dixon?

When Agatha Lapp’s brother and sister-in-law are tragically killed in a buggy accident, Agatha relocates to the new Amish community in Hunt Texas, nestled in the Texas Hill Country. She’s there to make a success of her brother’s dream–an Amish B&B. Agatha is friendly, efficient, and capable. She’s also a fifty-five year old widow who has learned to be independent. When she discovers Russell Dixon’s lifeless body in Cabin 3, she runs next door where retired detective Tony Vargas lives.

The police determine that her guest died of natural causes, but as Agatha and Tony put together the events of the previous two days they become convinced that the police are Dead Wrong.

Dead Wrong is a story of discovering new friendships and embracing a different path in the midst of tragedy. Above all else, it’s a story of God’s grace and provision.

Mrs. Morris and the Wolfman - A Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm very pleased to welcome Dr. Jack Strathmore to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Jack on the pages of the Salem B&B Mystery series by Traci Wilton. MRS. MORRIS AND THE WOLFMAN is the seventh book in the series and was released last month. After the guest post is a reprint of my review which I previously shared on this blog on August 4, 2023.

So…some of you might be curious as to what I do all day. It’s not just unicorns and rainbows, being a ghost. It’s a lot of effort to put in, to be visible. It’s for Charlene’s sake that I dress with style. Like I used to do, when I was a doctor leaving for the office every day. Played golf, drank wine with Brandy Flint, went to Boston for the plays. God, I was such a schmuck. I had no idea my beautiful wife Shana was cheating. With Theo, of all people. I thought he was a friend.

How oblivious must I have been to miss all the signs? I worked hard. I loved it though, helping people beat sickness. Beat death.  It’s a lot like being God. I didn’t really believe in the Big Guy but now I know different. Wished I’d been less self-absorbed when I was on earth. Love is what matters.

You know who I loved most? Amelia. My high school and college sweetheart. Shana was like a viper and separated us…but now that I’m dead, I see things with clarity. I let it happen. If I’d been true to Amelia, I might even still be alive right now.

When Charlene moved into my house—MY house!—I was so angry. Nobody could see me until Charlene. I was stuck here, because I’d been murdered here. She solved that mystery and we’ve been working together ever since.

I fear that I am in the way of her happiness now that she’s healed a little bit from Jared. I know Sam loves her. It really makes me mad. I want to hold Charlene. I want to be there for her—like I am now, but as a human man, not this worthless bodiless joke. We are happy though. We’ve made a family—Charlene, me, Silva, and Avery. I’m happier than I’ve ever been.

Tell me what you think of how Charlene and I work together to save our friend Darren Shultz from Sam taking him to jail…Darren has secrets, true, but he is no murderer. Where would Sam be without us?

MRS. MORRIS AND THE WOLFMAN by Traci Wilton
The Seventh Salem B&B Mystery

Having made millions selling flavored salts, Darren is following his dream by opening a classic cinema in Salem. Showing his favorite classic horror shows he's turned the old building into a showpiece serving popcorn with his gourmet flavored salts and his sister-in-law's homemade soft pretzels. Charlene forged a connection with Darren and his wife, Elise, and is excited to join in the soft opening. The film has barely begun when Elise appears to choke on her popcorn. Before the night is over Elise is dead, Darren is distraught, and a murderer may be on the loose.

The Wolf Man is more than just a classic horror film, it's much deeper with many layers. The same can be said for MRS. MORRIS AND THE WOLFMAN; it's not just a cozy mystery, it too is much deeper with many layers. In addition to the mystery, and just as important, is the relationship between characters and their growth. I love how Charlene has created a family with friends, guests, and a very special ghost. From dark despair at losing her husband she's created a wonderful new life.

The mystery was so clever, I was never sure who to trust. Lots of red herrings interspersed with Charlene trying to simply run her B&B. Of course, Charlene inserts manages to insert herself in the investigation as well. I absolutely loved the parallels drawn between this book and the classic film.

MRS. MORRIS AND THE WOLFMAN takes a classic horror movie and melds it with the American Dream gone awry in a delightfully chilling cozy mystery.

Saturday night at the movies has some added flair now that Darren and Elise Shultz are reopening one of Salem’s classic theaters. But things get hairier than expected when Elise starts to choke on her popcorn mid-movie—and once the lights go up, she’s dead . . .

When tests reveal Elise's popcorn was poisoned, Detective Sam Holden eyes her husband as the guilty party. Charlene doesn’t believe Darren would hurt his wife—even if his company’s specialty seasoned salts were sprinkled on the fatal snack. But who else had a motive to do something so unsavory? With a little help from Jack, the handsome ghost who haunts her B&B, Charlene delves into the ill-fated couple’s past. And the more she learns, the more Charlene wonders if this time, she’s bitten off more than she can chew . . .

Mrs. Morris and the Pot of Gold - A Review

 Review

MRS. MORRIS AND THE POT OF GOLD by Traci Wilton
The Sixth Salem B & B Mystery

It's St. Patrick's Day in Salem and Charlene is bringing all of her B&B guests out to celebrate. Although the reservations are muddled and the woman in charge seems a bit overwhelmed everyone seems to be having a good time. That is until a drunk relative of the organizer forces his way in and makes a scene. Determined to ignore him, Charlene has fun with her guests until the event ends. A scarf left by one of her guests leads Charlene back inside only to be pushed aside by someone in a hoodie as she discovers the family black sheep on the floor. At least no one is dead...yet.

I love mysteries set around the holidays. While Christmas and Halloween themed ones are great, I appreciate when an author picks a less popular holiday. I was excited to discover the sixth Salem B & B Mystery is set during St. Patrick's Day! I enjoyed learning about the Irish influence in Salem as well as meeting new characters, the Gallagher and O'Brien families as well as the new B & B guests. I was especially amused at Charlene's attempt to make friends with the one guest who refused to be part of her happy hospitality family.

The mystery was complex with lots of familial undertones, in both the major plot and subplots as well. The sheer number of family members, all of whom could be suspects, added to the intrigue and the complexity. I always enjoy the rapport between Charlene and Jack and love how they work together to puzzle out the mystery.

Corned beef and cabbage, a creepy leprechaun, and family dynamics make MRS. MORRIS AND THE POT OF GOLD fantastic holiday mystery.

The Sign of the Calico Quartz - An Interiew & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Jan Drexler to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Jan writes the Sweetbriar Inn Mystery series. THE SIGN OF THE CALICO QUARTZ is the first book in the series.

Kathy: In THE SIGN OF THE CALICO QUARTZ Emma Blackwood comes to the Black Hills of South Dakota to work at her aunt's B&B. Have you ever wanted to own or work at a B&B?

JD: Several years ago, as we were planning to sell our house in town and move into the Black Hills, we considered buying a place that we could use as a B&B. We did just enough research to tell us that we aren’t cut out to be B&B hosts (my husband and I both tend toward the introvert end of the social scale,) but the research was intriguing. I created the Sweetbrier Inn as my dream B&B and the setting for my cozies was born.

Kathy: Emma's favorite pastime is solving literary mysteries. Before you started writing them, was this a favorite of yours as well?

JD: I read a mystery whenever I can get my hands on one! My favorite mystery writers are Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, but I also enjoy quite a few contemporary authors. I love the satisfaction of solving the puzzle just before the sleuth does.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

JD: Some of the first “chapter books” I ever read were mysteries. When I was young, I was usually reading The Bobbsey Twins or The Boxcar Children. Later I read volumes of Agatha Christie’s stories, and I was hooked.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

JD: My first published books were historical romances, based on my ancestor’s Amish backgrounds. I like to call them “historical romance with Amish characters.” I’ve also published an historical romance set in Deadwood, South Dakota during the Gold Rush days, and I’m working on a follow-up to that story that takes place on a ranch in South Dakota.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

JD: The Sweetbrier Inn is an upscale Bed and Breakfast located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, where mysteries abound, friendships are strong, and the scenery is breathtaking. Emma Blackwood has turned amateur sleuth as she solves puzzling murders with the help of her friend Becky Graves, handsome Deputy Cal Cooper, Aunt Rose (with an intriguing background of her own,) and her furry companions, Thatcher the corgi and Tim the cat. They'll make you feel at home in Paragon, the small town nestled in the midst of the Hills which is populated with its own quirky characters.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

JD: I think my favorite character is Emma. She has a lot of qualities I wish I had – she’s much braver than I am! – and her powers of observation are stellar. She’s also confident in her own abilities even though she is still influenced by an unfortunate relationship in her past. But even though she’s quite self-sufficient, Becky’s friendship breaks through her protective shell. The main thing about Emma, though, is her sense of right and wrong. Like Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, Emma won’t rest until evil is conquered and the bad guy or girl is behind bars.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

JD: There was a secondary character in a movie I watched several years ago, and she caught my imagination. She was a gentle, cultured woman in her sixties who was also a trained assassin. I started thinking – if she had a family, what would they think of her? Rose and Emma grew out of those “what if’s.”

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

JD: Publishing has been my goal since I started writing. My first thirteen books were traditionally published, but in 2020 I was ready for a change (weren’t we all?) So I ventured into the self-publishing world with my cozy mystery series.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

JD: I think of some of my favorite authors – Christie, Sayers, JRR Tolkien, C.S. Lewis – but I’m afraid that I’d just cower in my chair nibbling celery at a dinner party with them, LOL!

Instead, I’d invite some of the authors who have been so helpful and influential to my career. I’d hate to limit the list to four, but I’d start with Ruth Logan Herne, Mary Connealy, Erica Vetsch, and Debby Giusti. I’d need a bigger table for the rest of my author friends.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

JD: My aunt loaned me her copies of the Guideposts mystery series, The Mysteries of Lancaster County. I’m alternating the books in that series with the original Nancy Drew books. Would you believe I never read Nancy Drew before? I’m also doing an Agatha Christie reading challenge this year. The next book on the list to read is “At Bertram’s Hotel.”

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

JD: I have some varied interests that take up my non-writing time. I’m addicted to counted cross stitch and spend an hour or two stitching to relax in the evenings. I also love to hike in the Black Hills. My husband and I try to log in a hike at least once a week. Gardening is another passion. I have a large vegetable garden that takes up my time during the summer and fall. Between those hobbies and reading, I keep busy!

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

JD: Chocolate. Do we need anything else? I also have a weakness for tea, pickled beets, and fresh veggies from the garden.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

JD: I’m planning to release the second book in this series at the end of the summer. That story is called “The Case of the Artist’s Mistake.” I have plans for at least one more book set at the Sweetbrier Inn, maybe more. But I’m also developing a time jumping mystery series set in a lighthouse in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

JD: I used to get in trouble for daydreaming when I was in school. Now I have an excuse to spend hours in my imaginary world.
