Death of a Proper Bostonian - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm very pleased to share this missive from Mrs. E. Sutton. You can find her on the pages of  Death of a Proper Bostonian by Anne Louise Bannon. This book is the sixth in the Old Los Angeles Mystery series and will be released this Friday!

14 Tulip St.
Boston, Massachusetts
August 27, 1873

Mrs. E. Sutton
Sutton Funeral Parlor
12 Calle de la Eternidad
Los Angeles, California

My Dearest Angelina and Regina;

Pray forgive me for addressing you both in this missive, but I have suddenly become quite occupied, both with a new patient and an old misery. I had thought I would be enjoying a much-needed respite from the violence that so often plagues the pueblo. But, no. I am once again mired in the nefarious misdeeds of some unknown person.

I shall begin at the beginning. I believe in my last letter, I mentioned that I was expecting to dine with the elder brother of my late and unlamented husband. My darling sister Carrie made every excuse. However, my father had implored us to be kind to Mr. Wilcox for the sake of the friendship between our respective fathers.

This is the same fellow of whom I remarked that I would have thought he was courting me, but that his wife still lives. Mrs. Wilcox turned out to be quite pleasant, if sickly. The meal itself was rather bland, the conversation almost the same, but for one of the other guests, Mr. John Wilcox, a poor cousin who is a naturalist and there to give a lecture and Magic Lantern show about his travels. The dinner conversation was the usual tut-tuttery about women’s roles and suffrage, and the younger Mr. Wilcox argued quite sensibly in favor of suffrage and women in the medical profession.

Poor thing. He would soon be in the position of putting the proof to his words. But first, the elder Mr. Wilcox accosted me in an attempt at wooing me. He clearly still had designs upon my property. I removed myself immediately from the room and went to the lecture.

It was very well done, with Mr. John’s uncle changing the slides in the lantern as Mr. John talked. But then a shot rang out, and Mr. John was hit in his lower limb. Elena and I were, of course, at his side immediately. We oversaw his removal to an upstairs bedroom, while my brother-in-law fetched our surgical tools and work clothes, Carrie’s house being but three doors away.

The surgery went well. However, the greater horror was that the elder Mr. Wilcox was found shot to death in his bed the next morning. Thanks to your ongoing and excellent study of rigor mortis, dear Angelina, when I examined the corpus, I was able to determine that the elder Mr. Wilcox had probably been shot at the same time as his younger cousin. And, as such, it seems likely that Mr. John had been shot as a diversion.

So, yes, I am once again on the search for a killer. Whatever knowing smirks you two are sharing with each other, I firmly believe that none of us wishes it were so. I already sorely miss your wise counsel, or at least our conferences in my study with pan dulces and angelica. Oddly enough, Mr. John seems to be quite helpful, but not nearly as helpful as you two, so dear to my heart as you are.

I received both your letters the other day and was quite warmed by them. However, as I have no way of knowing how much longer I will be here in Boston, I must beg you to wait to send more for fear that they will be chasing me back and forth across the country. My sister Carrie offers you her best regards, and I have given her yours.

I miss you, my dear hearts.

With great affection,

Maddie

About Death of a Proper Bostonian

Death of a Proper Bostonian (Old Los Angeles)
Historical Mystery 6th in Series
Setting - Boston, 1873
Publisher: ‎ Healcroft House, Publishers
Publication Date: ‎ June 12, 2026
A deadly homecoming It's August 1873, and at long last, physician and winemaker Maddie Franklin Wilcox makes the journey home to her beloved native Boston. Her business is to deliver her ward and apprentice, Elena Ortiz, to the local women's medical school, and that also includes visiting her father, her sister and her family. But at a dinner with the family of Maddie's late and very much unlamented (at least, on her part) husband, young John Wilcox, a cousin there to entertain the guests with his nature talk, is shot. Then the next morning, the eldest of the Wilcox brothers is found shot in his bed. Maddie quickly concludes that the shooting of the oh, so charming naturalist was but a distraction for the shooting of her former brother-in-law. Chased by a corrupt Boston police officer, confronted again and again by the relentless prejudice of the city's medical practitioners, and in danger of losing her heart to young John Wilcox (who had plenty of reasons to want his cousin dead), Maddie's happy homecoming becomes a morass of suspicion with someone willing to kill her and the people she loves.

Sore Like an Eagle - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Andy Shirley to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Andy on the pages of the Redwoods Country Mystery series by Marc Jedel. Sore Like an Eagle is the third book in the series and was released last month.

Guest Post by Andy Shirley, from Sore Like an Eagle by Marc Jedel
As told to Marc Jedel, who insists on calling himself “my author”

Once again, Marc asked me to write a guest post—like I had nothing better to do than do his bidding. I told him I was busy, but he replied that as a fictional character, I’m not actually busy in real life. Offended, I pointed out that, technically as an author, he’s not busy in real life either.

One of us runs an inn, solves murders, and feeds a toy poodle with a superiority complex. The other sits in front of his computer for hours every day, occasionally cackling to himself. Some might even describe that behavior as crazy, but Marc insists it’s him being creative.

“What-evs” as Charlie or Sindy would put it. It wasn’t worth arguing especially when he began making threats about deleting me. Authors are not always the nicest of people.

Things around here have settled down since my last adventure that Marc exaggerated in Sore Like an Eagle—and what kind of ridiculous title is that anyway? With Thanksgiving over, Christmas is approaching. Although if you only paid attention to decorations and holiday music in the stores, you’d have thought it’s been around the corner for months now.

Whenever things seem calm, I worry something is about to go horribly wrong. Marc thinks it’s great fun to involve me in different humorous murder mysteries—as if murders could ever be funny. With the way the murder rate in the small town of Monte Rio is climbing, I might need to move away from here to stay safe.

Just don’t ask me what’s next. I have no idea. No one tells me anything—apparently, spoilers are bad for my “character arc.”

For those who don’t know me, I’m Andy Shirley, sixty-five, retired copy editor, reluctant bed-and-breakfast owner, and sometimes wannabe recluse. My late wife, Catherine, dreamed of running this inn by the Russian River. I dreamed of fishing quietly and avoiding small talk with strangers. Fate, it turns out, has a dark sense of humor.

These days, I manage the Quilt House Inn with help from my Romanian cook, Nadia—who prepares an amazing breakfast buffet. I believe she could take down a murderer with a wooden spoon. Charlie, my inadvertent and highly unofficial sidekick is the town’s hybrid plumber-electrician. She manages to keep my inn from shorting out or flooding from broken pipes. She’s thirty, loud, and possesses the reckless confidence of someone who’s never had to Google “when to replace a hip.” She insists I’m “too negative,” which is rich coming from someone who has “don’t die stupidly” written on her toolbox. She’s good at fixing things and even better at roping me into situations I should know to avoid. She calls it teamwork. I call it entrapment.

Then there’s Fifi—excuse me, Mademoiselle Fifi—my late wife’s teacup poodle. She’s comes in a petite size but is still high maintenance. Fifi insists on visiting the salon each month for a shampoo and style with a fresh pink bow. In addition she receives a pedicure to finish her look. True to her French nature, she has strong opinions. One time I chastised her and she refused to look at me for two days. Fifi accompanies me most places tucked into the front pocket of my fishing vest, supervising my life like a furry parole officer.

The townsfolk here in Monte Rio are friendly enough, though “friendly” in this case often translates to “nosy.” I’ve discovered that small-town gossip travels faster than lightning. People say the town runs on coffee and rumor, which seems entirely accurate.

When I’m not attending to my inn or being drafted into Charlie’s schemes, I go fishing, head out on hikes, or tinker in my new archery shop. Some men in their sixties buy motorcycles. Given the wet, curvy roads and my reflexes, I feel more comfortable teaching archery to young people. Unlike most people, arrows fly straight and don’t gossip.

Marc keeps telling me this series is “cozy” and “humorous.” My inn is certainly cozy. And while I enjoy a good joke, I have yet to find the humor in his stories—not with all the dead bodies. From my point of view, I’m a retired man who just wanted peace and pie. Instead, I’m chasing suspects, tripping over bodies, and finding clues where I least expect them.

Still, I can’t complain too much. The inn’s running smoothly, the guests haven’t found any corpses lately, and Fifi’s fan club continues to grow. In a flash of brilliance, Charlie added her profile to the inn’s social media page and the number of likes have doubled.

So if you find yourself near Monte Rio, stop by the Quilt House Inn. I’ll be the one in the fishing vest with too many pockets, pretending I don’t like people while secretly hoping you brought cookies. You’ll get a comfortable bed, an amazing breakfast, and—if we’re lucky—a murder-free stay. Just don’t call me “adorable” or “grumpy but lovable.”

Sore Like an Eagle, is on sale for only $2.99 during this tour. It’s available at: https://mybook.to/SoreLikeanEagle.. Hot Wings and Homicide - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

HOT WINGS AND HOMICIDE by Carmela Dutra
The Second Food Truck Mystery

Kluckin’ Good is doing brisk business and Beth Lloyd is delighted to have her food truck at the Flavors of the Bay Food Festival. Her twin brother, Seth, is not as pleased in his cow costume passing out samples and fliers promoting their new sliders. The first shock arrives when Beth's ex-boyfriend shows up. Brad Dawson has moved back to town, reinventing himself as a food critic. After more than one public confrontation, the second shock comes when Beth finds Brad's body on the festival grounds. Although several people had issues with the critic, police are eyeing both Beth and Seth, even as the festival promoter is saying that the death is just an accident. With a murder charge looming, Beth and her bestie, Rylie, once again start referencing their favorite true crime podcast as they are determined to find the real killer.

Let the fun begin as readers are transported to a California food fest featuring food that's to die for. I was laughing throughout this fast paced novel, almost as much as I was wishing for some wings! Twins Beth and Seth bicker and tease and each are overprotective of the other, but together they make a formidable team along with Rylie. I really enjoyed seeing Detective Kane in this off duty role and appreciate as he looks out for Beth. Other characters are not so pleasant. The more we learn about Brad the more despicable he becomes, and there are other unpleasant characters too, namely Layla and Caren. The variety of characters, even the likable ones, made good suspects. Of course, my favorite new character is Teriyaki! I think she's an even better mascot than Rylie in the chicken suit or Seth in the new cow costume. Of course, Teriyaki can't exactly hand out fliers and samples.

But it's not just laughter, or even murder, that makes everything so enjoyable. There's depth here-and not just in the quality of the sauces. Love and friendship are mainstays even as secrets come back to bite several of the characters in the second Food Truck Mystery.

Lots of laughs, good food, and a cute chicken make HOT WINGS AND HOMICIDE a delectable read sure to satisfy your mystery loving cravings.

Twins Beth and Seth Lloyd are on the chopping block in the follow-up to A Murder Most Fowl, where a perfect recipe for murder is stirred up.

When the infamous food critic Brad Dawson—also Beth’s ex—turns up dead, the only clue at the scene of the crime is a Kluckin’ Good tumbler mug. The timing couldn’t be worse. Beth and Brad were seen in a heated altercation, and days prior, witnesses saw Seth punch Brad. Suspicion naturally falls on the twins. With the cops hot on their trail, Beth will have to avoid the flames to clear their names and save her food truck’s reputation.

But the chickens are out of the coop, and as Beth digs into Brad’s final hours, she will uncover rivalries, grudges, and a different side of Brad she never knew. If she doesn’t crack the case soon, she might be the next one to get cooked. Best of cluck!

Murder Most Trivial - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

MURDER, SHE WROTE: MURDER MOST TRIVIAL
By Jessica Fletcher & Barbara Early
The Sixty-Third Murder, She Wrote Mystery

There's a new Irish themed pub in Cabot Cove, and though Jessica Fletcher is skeptical about its authenticity, she willingly joins her friends Seth Hazlitt and Maureen and Mort Metzger for opening night. The group also decides to join in the fun and compete in the pub's first trivia night. With a victory the friends not only win a pub gift certificate, they also win entry to compete in a live televised pub quiz. Deciding they're due for a vacation the foursome head to Los Angeles, staying at Jessica's niece's home which is being converted into a B&B. Amid brushing up on their trivia and sightseeing, they also have to deal with a possibly haunted house and, when a soundman keels over on the set, murder! Teaming up with her old friend, Lieutenant Caceras, Jessica, along with Seth, Mort, and Maureen will do their best to remain in the competition so they can help solve the case.

There are several delightful aspects to the sixty-third Murder, She Wrote Mystery. The pub quiz theme is great fun reminding me of my days on the It's Academic team in high school and playing Trivial Pursuit in college. I love how each member of the team has their strengths and they all work together. I really love the haunted B&B that while owned by Jess's relatives, is still home to an old Hollywood movie star, giving readers more nostalgia and a touch of Old Hollywood glam...and a possible ghost! And hidden treasure too!

Of course, the mystery is the main thing-and it's a good one. Complex with many possible suspects and motives, I enjoy how our friends investigate; channeling former television detectives, along with using Jessica Fletcher's intuition and Mort's background as Cabot Cove Sheriff. And of course, working hand in hand with local law enforcement.

With a penchant for puzzles Jessica Fletcher tackles both trivia and murder in MURDER, SHE WROTE: MURDER MOST TRIVIAL, a delightfully fresh addition to this long running series.

A Poisonous Pour - A Spotlight

Today I'd like to shine a spotlight on a recent release. A Poisonous Pour by Maddie Day is the third book in the Cece Barton Mystery series and was released this week!

Blurb:

It’s Memorial Day weekend and Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley is buzzing with activity. For Cece, business at Vino y Vida is going great, as is her romance with new beau, Benjamin. Meanwhile, Cece’s neighbor, Richard Flora, is stirring up controversy with his newest article, an exposé of Regan Greene, power-hungry director of a valley district organization. Also in the mix is the town’s big classic car show, paired with wine tastings . . .

At the show, Cece spots Regan, who is displaying her restored green ’72 Thunderbird convertible. As Cece pours tastes, she witnesses several heated discussions with Regan—including an argument with wine afficionado and new Colinas hardware store owner Greg Jardis. Otherwise, all goes smoothly—until Sunday brings shocking news. Regan has been murdered . . .

Rumors fly that Richard may have orchestrated the homicide—or even committed it. But Cece knows that’s absurd. And others in Cece’s orbit seem to have discomfiting connections to Regan, from Cece’s employee, Dane, to her winemaking teacher’s sister, Yolanda, to Colinas Mayor Guittierez. And after Yolanda visits the wine bar, Benjamin says he recognizes her from a road race.

Determined to clear Richard’s name, and failing to extract any clues from detectives, Cece once again enlists her twin, Allie, as her partner-in-sleuthing. But they’ll have to act quickly, before the trail goes
sour . . .

Currently Reading...

I'm currently reading Round up the Unusual Suspects by Elizabeth Crowens. This book is the third in the Babs Norman Hollywood Mystery series and was released earlier this year.

Babs Norman and her partner, Guy Brandt, have a new case. A body has been found on the set of Yankee Doodle Dandy and Jack Warner has hired the gumshoes to solve the case. With shooting ending on the Cagney film the detectives move their search for a killer to the set of Casablanca. But solving a murder isn't the only problem they face. The government is mandating the internment of Japanese residents, but Babs is intent on hiding her lodger, Mr. Otake. With trouble on the set including pilfering and Bogart's mercurial wife, not to mention an unfinished script, plus the threat of losing their PI license or even jail time for hiding Mr. Otake, will Babs and Guy be able to flush out a killer?

CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE by S. K. Derban
The Second Macaroni on Wheels Mystery

Terza Tiepolo  is excited that her catering company, Macaroni on Wheels, is helping to plan a surprise birthday party for Sloan Kamoze. Her husband, Joshua, is a joy to work with as are his wife's co-workers who are helping. The only dark cloud is Joshua's sister, Ruby. The woman is paranoid and delusional making accusations and odd statements. When Terza returns to their home the morning after the party she finds Sloan dead at the bottom of their beautiful curved staircase, just like Joshua's first wife. But Terza's eagle eye notices clues that indicate this was not just a tragic accident.

There is a lot I like about CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE. I love the Tiepolo family dynamic; the way they care about each other, but also needle each other, the way they have Sunday dinner together then go play bocce ball. It's a warm loving feeling that extends to Terza's best friend Mo and her husband. I also adore the relationship between Terza and the medical examiner. I hope his assistant will play a bigger role in the next book as I thought she was a great addition. I enjoy the neighborhood of Little Italy which brings back memories of when I lived in a different Little Italy over 30 years ago. Of course, I love the food. The descriptions had be drooling.

Unfortunately, there were several things I wasn't too fond of in the second Macaroni on Wheels Mystery. First of all it was blatantly obvious who the killer was as well as the motive. Terza's near desperation to be married is a bit much and Nick's explanation for his behavior was believable...but barely. I also thought we had a possible third love interest, but we didn't. The series has two bits I really enjoy, the first is the M. E. calling Terza Number Three, and the second is her father asking her is she's read her bible and called her mother. However, while the latter bit is funny and fine to be repeated every day and it's fine that Terza reads her bible daily, though this is more of a Baptist practice than Roman Catholic, but does the author really have to describe her doing this EVERY day? And then have a whole section quoting the bible? From the acknowledgements it's obvious that religion is a major part of the author's life, but the book comes across more evangelical than anything else and is a bit off putting.

Delicious Italian food and the love of family make CASE OF THE CURVED STAIRCASE a fun feel good mystery.

The Little Italy entertainment continues in this second book of the Macaroni on Wheels series. Case of the Curved Staircase has more twists and turns than Terza can handle. And, Detective Nicholas Garza is not on the case. Say it isn't so, Nico! Staircases can be fatal, especially on Halloween. After catering a surprise birthday party on the evening of October 30th, Terza returns to the scene of the celebration on the following morning. Instead of being greeted by the happy, party hosts, Terza discovers a dead body at the bottom of the curved staircase. Not again! And this time, Terza's amateur detective skills are landing her directly into personal danger. She would rather be using her chef's knife than having one pointed at her face! As the feisty Italian caterer continues to fill her free time solving crime, she runs head first into a new detective. Unlike Nicholas Garza, the detective now in charge considers Terza a hinderance instead of a help. Fortunately, Jacob Radovan, the medical examiner, continues to be Terza's ally. There is also an unexpected wedding in Case of the Curved Staircase. Readers of Uneven Exchange just might cheer out loud. The almost perfect weather in San Diego allows the bride and groom to take a carriage ride from the wedding venue to the reception ballroom. It's a fairytale come true. Fans of cozy mysteries will revel in solving another murder along with Terza, and will continue to appreciate her zest for life. Readers will be spending more time with the animated Tiepolo family, and especially Terza's father. Ezio's Halloween costume is a moo-ving choice! The Tiepolo's celebrate their loving, family bond as they join together each Sunday. Food, family, and fun! Once again, you may consider this your personal invitation...

Tell-Tale Treats - A Review

 Review

TELL-TALE TREATS by Jennifer J. Chow
The Third Magical Fortune Cookie Mystery

It's a girls' weekend when former high school friends led by Ashlyn Cook, the Queen Bee herself, rent out Pixie Inn. Felicity Jin is happy to provide a never ending supply of baked goods for the event while her boyfriend, Kelvin is outfitting the B&B with his floral designs. That night the owner of the inn calls Kelvin in a panic, but when he and Felicity arrive they find a water leak is the least of their worries. Ashlyn is dead. Was this a tragic accident? With Detective Sun on the case it must be something more. Felicity and Kelvin will be sure to make themselves useful-whether it's delivering treats from their stores, providing a shoulder to lean on, or picking up clues to catch a killer.

With the release of the third Magical Fortune Cookie Mystery I was happy to find myself back in California drooling over almond cookies and pineapple buns.

TELL-TALE TREATS looks at how friendships can change, what people will do for love, and how love and friendship can sour. It also shows how family doesn't need a blood, or even human, connection. Family is who is there for you, in good times and bad and who gathers round your dining room table.

I enjoyed the mystery and especially appreciated how Whiskers and two other furry friends helped solve the crime as well as provide love and affection. While I knew early on a certain someone was bad news, and a big liar, I was unsure of motive. I liked how Felicity and Kelvin worked together to get to the bottom of everything.

It's interesting to note that since Felicity and Kelvin became a romantic couple the investigation has become a team effort. It's no longer Felicity investigating with help from her friend Kelvin, instead the two of them do everything together. This works at the moment, as they are a great team. I only hope this coupling doesn't diminish Felicity's power.

With delectable Chinese baked goods and a hint of magic TELL-TALE TREATS provides a scrumptious mystery that's to die for.

Whine and Dine - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to let Andy Shirley take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Andy on the pages of the Redwoods Country Mystery series by Marc Jedel. Whine and Dine is the second book in the series.

Guest Post by Andy Shirley, from Whine and Dine by Marc Jedel
(as told to Marc Jedel, who insists on calling himself my author)

When Marc asked me to write a guest post, I told him I was busy. He replied that as a fictional character, I’m not actually busy in real life. Offended, I pointed out that, technically, he’s not busy in real life either and I run an inn, solve murders, and feed a poodle with a superiority complex. Marc claimed that didn’t count. I’d argue, but it’s hard to win against the man with a finger hovering above the delete key.

Anyway, since my last adventure (Whine and Dine), life in Monte Rio has “settled down.” That’s always what people say right before things go horribly wrong. With a murder rate in this town beginning to approach that of Cabot Cove or Midsomer County, it’s hard to know what normal is. Sure enough, I’m told the next book involves me in another humorous murder mystery—as if murders could ever be funny. No one tells me the details—apparently, spoilers are bad for my “character arc.”

She’s thirty, loud, and possesses the reckless confidence of someone who’s never had to Google “how to replace a hip.” She insists I’m “too negative,” which is rich coming from someone who has “don’t die stupidly” written on her toolbox.

Given the wet, curvy roads and my reflexes, I feel more comfortable buying arrows and teaching archery to young people.

You’ll get a warm bed, an amazing breakfast, and—if we’re lucky—a murder-free stay. Just don’t call me “adorable” or “grumpy but lovable.” That sort of reputation would make it hard to keep the possibility of becoming a recluse alive.

During this tour, Whine and Dine, is on sale for only $2.99, and book 1, Rivers and Creaks, is only $0.99. They’re available at: https://mybook.to/WhineandDine and https://mybook.to/RiversandCreaks. You can find all Marc’s cozy mysteries at: https://www.amazon.com/Marc-Jedel/e/B07H7MVKJL. They’re available in e-book, paperback, and audiobook formats. Marc’s novels are free to read by Kindle Unlimited members.

Marc loves hearing from readers as that motivates him to keep going on the next blank page. Let him know what you liked, what you didn’t, and what you’d want to see more of in the next book.

About Marc Jedel

Marc Jedel writes funny, feel-good murder mysteries filled with quirky characters, twisty plots, and the kind of humor that goes down easy with a cup of tea—or glass of wine. After years writing marketing copy in Silicon Valley, Marc finally started crafting fiction people actually wanted to read. He’s the author of multiple cozy mystery series, including the Silicon Valley Mystery, Ozarks Lake Mystery, and Redwoods Country Mystery series. His books have earned thousands of glowing reviews. Like Andy from the Redwoods Country Mysteries, Marc keeps getting older and sincerely hopes retirement doesn’t involve running a B&B. Like Marty from the Silicon Valley Mystery series, he lives in tech-heavy California, has worked in high-tech, and proudly wields bad puns. Like Jonas and Elizabeth from the Ozarks Lake Mystery series, Marc grew up in the South and spent many a summer in and around Arkansas. He lives with his endlessly patient wife and a sweet, neurotic dog who remains deeply unimpressed by Marc’s jokes. When not writing, Marc can be found hiking, plotting murders (on the page, officer, really!), or avoiding whatever home improvement project he’s been putting off. When Sleuthing Spells Trouble - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm happy to allow Nora Charles to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Nora on the pages of the Nick and Nora Mystery series by T. J. LoTempio. WHEN SLEUTHING SPELLS TROUBLE is the eighth book in the series and was released earlier this month.

MY LIFE WITH NICK, BY Nora Charles

Hello, my name is Nora Charles. A few years ago I gave up a successful career as a true crime reporter in Chicago to return to my home town of Cruz, California to take over my late mother’s sandwich shop. There were days when I wondered if I’d made the right decision. I confess, I missed the thrill of true crime reporting. One of my customers, Louis Blondell, runs a digital crime magazine called Noir, and he convinced me to write articles for the magazine. Still, things just weren’t the same...until I met Nick.

No, Nick’s not a romantic interest. He’s a tubby, twenty-something tuxedo cat with plenty of ‘cattitude’ that I found outside Hot Bread one night. My BFF, Chantal, convinced me to keep him. At the time I was working on a cold case article for Noir. Needless to say, Nick, whose former owner was a PI, helped me solve it – and we’ve been partners ever since.

Not to say that Nick can’t be annoying – he has a terrible habit of knowing just when someone will come to the door, or when my phone will ring – but his loyalty and devotion more than make up for it. He’s proved invaluable in detecting, as well. He also has an uncanny ability to spell out clues with his favorite toy, Scrabble tiles. While at first the clues seem meaningless, in the end they always seem to pan out in the solution of the mystery! Just one of his many abilities, which some think, border on the supernatural. Small wonder, since Nick Atkins his former owner, found him outside of a magic shop! But that’s a story for another day (coming soon, we promise!)

We’ve certainly had a lot of interesting adventures – from clearing my sister of the murder of her art professor, to investigating the curious death of a PI, to a ‘haunted’ house where it appeared a vampire was in residence, Nick and I have made sure that we follow every clue that comes our way until the criminal is brought to justice! And that’s never more true than in our latest undertaking!

In WHEN SLEUTHING SPELLS TROUBLE (a nod to Nick’s uncanny ability). My old friend and former CI, Hank Prince, asks me for a favor – to help prove that an old flame of his is innocent of the murder of her husband.

Six years ago Mariah Blackthorne was found lying on the floor of her home holding the murder weapon that killed her husband. She had no memory of what happened and ended up agreeing to a plea deal and went to prison. Now she’s out on parole and she desperately wants to learn the truth about what happened that night – even if it means discovering that she did murder him after all.

So Nick warned me of trouble ahead and was he ever right! There were no shortage of suspects in Blackthorne’s death, and Nick and I encountered a few vicious threats along the way. Did we solve it in the end?

You’ll have to read the book to find out! (Spoiler alert – there’s a very exciting conclusion)
