Deadly Village - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEADLY VILLAGE by Kate Parker
The Thirteenth Deadly Mystery

With their apartment in London bombed out and Adam training soldiers afar Olivia Redmond and newborn Stevie are forced to live with her father. Unfortunately, Livvy's father likes calm and quiet and since babies are definitely not calm and quiet he soon tells them to leave! At least he arranged for them to go to Chipping Ford to stay with her good friend Esther. Life in the Cotswold village is not so peaceful when the village busybody is murdered. Though she'd rather spend time with little Stevie, with her new camera and work as a reporter as well as British Intelligence it's up to Olivia to help the local bobby, even when an inspector from Oxford arrives. Will she uncover the truth or will the secrets of Chipping Ford stay hidden?

It's hard enough to be a first time mother, let alone having to do so when your husband is away righting in a war, you don't have a home of your own, and your father's a jerk. Add murder to the mix and you see what Livvy is dealing with in the thirteenth Deadly Mystery. I love how Olivia is able to deal with the challenges of motherhood and small town village politics while helping to solve a murder. I also really like her chutzpah, putting people in their place and caring for herself and her family first!

The mystery itself was compelling. An unpleasant village woman who was blackmailing multiple people winds up murdered. Just who was she blackmailing? I enjoyed the manner in which Olivia and Constable Bell worked together to investigate, digging up clues from not so willing villagers.

What was just as interesting as the mystery was the daily life for people in England during World War II. The details found here, the meals, the lack of petrol, working together on daily tasks and worrying about and/or grieving loved ones, adds yet another dimension to the story.

Layering together a riveting mystery with life during World War II DEADLY VILLAGE is a wonderful addition to this captivating series.

With a baby to care for and the villagers turning frosty, Olivia's only ally is a young bobby overwhelmed by his first murder case.

As a former newspaper reporter and covert asset for Britain's intelligence chief, Olivia knows how to uncover the truth. Deadly Performance - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEADLY PERFORMANCE by Kate Parker
The Twelfth Deadly Mystery

June 1941 finds Olivia Redmond hot, short tempered, and generally out of sorts. After her apartment is bombed by the Nazis she's forced  to move in with her father. Her husband, Adam, has resumed his duties in the army and his visits are few and far between. In an attempt to perk Livvy up Sir Henry loans her services to The Stage, an entertainment newspaper run by his old friend Si. When Livvy learns of trouble on the set of Have You Seen My Mother-in-Law her interest is definitely piqued. When the dastardly director drops dead in front of her Olivia thinks her story may be more suited to the Daily Premier rather than the The Stage!

DEADLY PERFORMANCE gives a behind the scenes look at theatre during WWII. I found it interesting what performances were chosen to be staged during this time-comedies and revues, as well as the fact that tours were common, so people all over the country were able to attend performances. As with every Deadly mystery the characterization is everything. No part is too small as all characters are well rounded people with needs, desires, and great back stories...even if we don't know what those stories are! Livvy's relationship with her father has appeared to regressed and we don't get to see much of Adam, but Livvy's other friendships stand her well as she deals with a group of new, well fleshed out characters. The mystery was absorbing and various happenings made me wonder if events were connected.

Secrets, historic detail, and a finely tuned mystery make DEADLY PERFORMANCE a delightfully captivating story in one of my favorite series!

Deadly Gamble - A Review & Giveaway

DEADLY GAMBLE by Kate Parker
The Eleventh Deadly Mystery

In 1941 Portugal is a neutral country and Lisbon a glittering city filled with both English and German businessmen and spies of various nationalities. One double agent is willing to give important information to England, but demands that his contact be a married woman. And so Olivia Redmond heads to Lisbon, in service to the spymaster once more. While it's nice to be free of nightly bombings, Livvy faces several other problems. Before she can meet with her contact he falls to his death. A search of his apartment doesn't lead to the documents, but rather the discovery of his young daughter. Livvy has to deal with annoying spies, dangerous Germans, and her own feelings as she cares for the little girl. Will Livvy be able to finish her mission, find the girl's relatives, and go home, or will Portuguese authorities put her in jail for murder?

With only a brief appearance by Sir Malcolm, the other principal characters in the series are absent from the eleventh Deadly Mystery. While I missed her interactions with Adam, as well as seeing her other friends, their absence truly gave Olivia a chance to shine on her own. And shine she did. I enjoyed how Livvy put her male counterparts in their place...and had plenty to say to certain Germans as well. DEADLY GAMBLE shows just how strong, and fierce, Livvy can be while it also shows her thought process regarding what she really wants from life.

One of the things I like best about this series is learning new things. I never realized that Portugal was neutral during World War Two. I also love the characters, the danger, excitement, and humor found here. The plot and the historic details brought the story to life and had me completely captivated.

DEADLY GAMBLE is a riveting story of spies and intrigue in a city trying to hold on to its luster.

Deadly Manor - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEADLY MANOR by Kate Parker
The Tenth Deadly Mystery

Looking for a respite from the bombing in London and a place to help her husband recover from a war injury Olivia Redmond and Adam, head to the country to stay with friends. Unfortunately, the manor is overrun when the obnoxious Viscount Norrington invites himself and a shooting party to stay as well. When two of the guests don't appear for breakfast, Livvy and Adam decide to check the old wing-and find the two men dead-murdered. Determined to help her hosts, Livvy tries to uncover the killer. But with no clear motive and a house chock full of suspects, all with secrets, the task seems insurmountable.

I love a good country house mystery and DEADLY MANOR executes it brilliantly. Giving a look at the aristocracy, it includes a crass Viscount I'd love to punch, or at least dress down, who I was certain would be the murder victim. Without being maudlin or overly sentimental it also deals with disabilities, accommodations, and learning new ways to live. I truly appreciate the little historical details, such as refugees from London living with the vicar, blackout curtains, and the inability of women to gain access to certain places. Those facts add verisimilitude and depth and increase my enjoyment of the story.

Almost everyone has a secret in the tenth book in the Deadly series and disparate motives make for a complex and compelling mystery. The reappearance of an old foe added another layer to the already multilayered plot and tension increased as the story progressed. There were plenty of thrills to rev up my heart rate and I applaud Livvy for her determination and smarts.

DEADLY MANOR is a brilliant mystery bringing together the theme of country house parties infused with class issues all within the backdrop of World War II. This series remains one of my most favorites and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Deadly Rescue - A Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to allow Olivia Redmond to take over Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Livvy on the pages of the Deadly Series by Kate Parker. DEADLY RESCUE is the ninth book in the series and is being released today!

So far, in the early days of World War II, Britain’s spymaster, Sir Malcolm Fremantle, has used me as a part-time agent. When he sent me to Denmark ahead of the German invasion, he had a single goal for me to achieve. Get a Nobel Prize winning chemist and his papers on his research to Britain. However, I had two goals. Sir Malcolm’s of course, but there was a second one. The chemist’s wife was a good friend of my long dead mother. My father, being a stiff upper lip Victorian, never talked about my mother, even when I asked questions. I was six when she died, and my memories had faded with time.

Here was someone who knew her, and knew her well, who was willing to talk to me about her. Willing to tell me what she was like besides the warm, caring mother I remembered. I hoped to learn more about my mother while visiting with them and then traveling back to England.

Fortunately, my mother’s friend spoke fluent English, since I knew no Danish and would never be able to pick it up in a single weekend among Danish speakers talking at their usual speed and with their individual accents and slang. Not speaking Danish was a handicap for both of my reasons for being in Copenhagen that weekend, but my partner on this mission for Sir Malcolm was a Danish-British man named Mike Christiansen who spoke both languages fluently and could translate for me.

Unfortunately, Christiansen had studied chemistry under Dr. Jørgensen at his institute, knew several people there, and didn’t seem to trust me or find me very bright. I found I didn’t trust him either. I promised myself the next time I went on a mission for Sir Malcolm, if I ever did, I would make certain I had enough time to study the geography and vocabulary of where I was going.

One thing I could understand was that the Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Jørgensen, was working on a synthetic rubber that didn’t require petroleum for its basis. Petroleum was nearly as difficult to obtain as natural rubber, with U-boats bringing down shipping every day. This chemist’s experiments showed promise in using everyday ingredients to create synthetic rubber. That told me how important Dr. Jørgensen, and his research, were to Britain and why Sir Malcolm sent the two of us over to escort him back to England with us.

But the chemist wanted his wife to accompany him, and I wanted her to, also. She kept telling me how much fun my mother was, and that was wonderful to hear. She also had an enlarged photo taken of the two of them from before I was born. Looking at it brought back my memories of what my mother looked like, smiling, genuinely happy, loving life. It reminded me of what we’d all lost when influenza took her away from us.

I was beginning to understand why my father couldn’t bring himself to talk about her.

DEADLY RESCUE by Kate Parker
The Ninth Deadly Mystery

As the war intensifies, Olivia Redmond is called into service once again. She has to go to Denmark to persuade a Nobel winning chemist, his wife, and their recalcitrant daughter to come to England before the Nazis invade. Despite her desire to refuse this mission, there's an unexpected benefit. The chemist's wife happened to be a good friend of Olivia's mother, a mother she barely remembers. An opportunity to learn more about her mother has Olivia rushing to Denmark. Knowing nothing of the geography or language she'll have to rely on her partner for this mission, a man not so keen on her assistance. Once at the institute in Denmark, they find a chemist ambivalent about leaving, his stubborn wife, and a nasty willful daughter, along with a variety of students and servants. They only have a weekend to complete their mission, but when murder strikes the Danish police intend to keep them until the killer is found. Now Olivia will have to solve the murder or wind up trapped behind enemy lines.

As the war intensifies I find the characters do too. In this ninth Deadly Mystery the war has truly begun, and the new characters are, for the most part, unpleasant. It's as if the stark reality and upcoming harshness of the war is foreshadowed in the characters themselves. Even Livvy's partner for this mission, isn't exactly a ray of sunshine. Add the absence of her husband and the fact that her London friends aren't here, and it makes things even bleaker. What makes it even more poignant is that there was a returning character I was happy to see, Oberst Wilhelm Bernhard. Poignant because he is a German officer and I fear things are not going well for him.

In addition to the darker ambiance there's also a very fine mystery. Subtle clues and misdirection make for an intriguing cerebral puzzle with the added excitement of a deadline. A new country and historical detail add interest and I found myself reading until my bathwater was cold. It was so late I almost missed my PBS mystery preparations!

DEADLY RESCUE is a story of determination, ego, and grit. A fascinating look at lesser known parts of WWII added to my enjoyment of this stellar series. I eagerly await its next installment.

Deadly Broadcast - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DEADLY BROADCAST by Kate Parker
The Eighth Deadly Mystery

It may be Christmastime, but there's nothing holly or jolly about it. It's 1939 and England is engaged in the so called phony war. There are no happy cries of children as most have been removed from London and Olivia Redmond is missing her husband, who did not get Christmas leave. When Olivia literally stumbles over a dead body, her newspaper assignment is once again transformed into a counterintelligence operation. The victim was an engineer for the BBC and an informant against the IRA. Was he killed by members of the IRA? Or was his murder more personal in nature?

Blackmail, terrorists, and a country in the early days of war set Livvy up for one of her most dangerous adventures yet. She's been in situations fraught with danger, but this eighth Deadly Broadcast mystery gets much more personal, and physical.

One of the things I like best about historical mysteries is learning things of which I was unaware. I thought that once Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 England was at war, real war. I was completely unaware of the "phony war". I also enjoy reading about real people. While the author generally shies away from it, this book treats us to Edward R. Murrow, and more importantly his wife, Janet. Janet is a fantastic character, smart, talented in her own right, and a great and helpful new friend for Olivia.

I love just about everything in this series and its most recent addition. Livvy is a fantastic protagonist doing what needs be done, even when she'd rather just work at the newspaper. So many issues are brought up, bringing some harsh realities of the time into focus. I love when Livvy lets Adam's friend have it. I was ticked off at Adam too, although his opinion was probably common then, and perhaps even now.

Hair raising moments, untrustworthy suspects, and a despicable dead man make DEADLY BROADCAST a gripping, page-turner.

The Secret in the Wall - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Ann Parker to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Ann writes the Silver Rush Mystery series. THE SECRET IN THE WALL is the eighth book in the series and was released last week.

Kathy: The Silver Rush Mystery series is set in the late 1800s. Why did you choose this era for your series?

AP: The late 1800s was a time of rapid change in the West. When my series opens in 1879, the silver rush is ramping up in Leadville, Colorado. People from far and wide are pouring into this remote area of the Rocky Mountains, hoping to get rich quick. The social upheavals accompanying such boom-and-bust cycles intrigue me. Also, in the latter part of the 19th century, women such as my protagonist, Inez Stannert, found greater opportunities in the West compared to the eastern U.S., including more liberal divorce laws and the freedom to reinvent themselves.

Kathy: Historical mysteries require a special type of research. What's your favorite method?

AP:I love pouring over historical maps and doing "on the ground" research. When on location, I search out landmarks from the past that still exist, such as San Francisco's Palace Hotel and Lotta's Fountain https://calisphere.org/item/ark:/13030/tf267nb3cv/. I also note "timeless" sensory details, such as the weather, the seasonal slant of the sun, and so on, and search out local experts and historical societies.

Kathy: Inez Stannert was a saloon owner and card sharp in the rough silver boomtown of Leadville, Colorado. Do you play cards?

AP: Not so much now. One fond childhood memory is playing poker with my best friend and her mother for toothpicks. Card games such as Go Fish and Hearts were staples when my children were young. With poker, we played for M&Ms so we could eat our winnings.

Kathy: THE SECRET IN THE WALL finds Inez moving to San Francisco and finds a skeleton with a bag of Civil War-era gold coins. Are you a Civil War buff?

AP: I find the War intriguing, particularly given the timeframe of my series. Nearly all of my characters either fought or lived through it, and many are still dealing with the repercussions in the 1880s. I owe much to a local Civil War reenactor who reached out to me after my first book, SILVER LIES, was published and let me know I'd made an error with one of the firearms (oops!). We had a wonderful chat about the Civil War, and he later invited me to a reenactment. What I learned there provided inspiration for my second book, IRON TIES.

Kathy: What first drew you to historical mysteries?

AP: Escaping to the past through stories is something I've done since I was a child. I suppose I found those long-ago times exotic and exciting compared to my humdrum mid-20th century childhood. My first brush with historical mysteries was probably the Bobbsey Twins books, which were written before I was born. Later on, I devoured Sherlock Holmes and the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. Additionally, as a young'un I loved TV westerns such as Gunsmoke, The Big Valley, and The Wild Wild West (which included elements of mystery and espionage).

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

AP: The past is still my preferred fiction-writing playground. However, I have written some contemporary short stories, just to stretch myself. "Purged" appears in Low Down Dirty Vote, Volume 2. "Winning by a Whisker: A Pawlitical Tale" (my experiment in writing humorous whimsey with a bite) appears in Volume 3, which will be published May 2022.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

AP: The Silver Rush series, set in the 1880s, features Colorado saloon-owner Inez Stannert—a woman with a mysterious past, a complicated present, and an uncertain future. In recent books, Inez has moved west to San Francisco, California, and re-invented herself as a music-store manager and a 19th-century "angel investor" for women-owned small businesses.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

AP: I never tire of writing my protagonist Inez—a strong woman who knows her own mind (if not necessarily her heart). I also have a special fondness for Inez's young ward, Antonia Gizzi, who first appeared in WHAT GOLD BUYS. It's been fun to explore the world from Antonia's point-of-view, especially in the newest book,

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

AP: I wanted to bring the past to life for readers, and examine what life was like for women in the "Victorian West" of the United States.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

AP: As a voracious reader and a science writer in my day job, I wanted to try my hand at writing fiction. After I'd researched, written, edited, and polished SILVER LIES—which took three years—it felt natural to take the next step and query publishers.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

AP: Willa Cather, for certain, as well as author/illustrator Mary Hallocke Foote, whose work portrayed life in the late-19th-century mining communities of the American West. Let's add Edgar Allan Poe and (because I am a such a fan-girl of his books!) Martin Cruz Smith.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

AP: AND ONLY TO DECEIVE by Tasha Alexander for a mystery book group discussion. Great fun!

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

AP: I love to walk and take close-up photos of plants and urban landscapes. There's also my cat, Mia (#DivaMissMia on Facebook), who keeps me on my toes and doesn't let me stay up past my bedtime.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

AP: Coffee, first and foremost, as being well-caffeinated is a daily necessity! I'm the "snacky" sort, so stockpile chips (potato, tortilla); roasted almonds; and chocolate (in many forms).

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

AP: I am mulling several ideas for the Silver Rush series, and have an exciting possibility in mind for a different (but still historical) series.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

AP: I love hearing from readers! Like many authors, I spin my tales, release them into the world, and then wonder: Do they "speak to" or resonate with anyone? So, feedback from readers is always appreciated!

About The Secret In The Wall

The Secret in the Wall: A Novel (Silver Rush Mysteries)
Historical Mystery 8th in Series
Poisoned Pen Press (February 15, 2022)
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 400 pages

Sometimes you can't keep your gown out of the gutter...

Inez Stannert has reinvented herself—again. Fleeing the comfort and wealth of her East Coast upbringing, she became a saloon owner and card sharp in the rough silver boomtown of Leadville, Colorado, always favoring the unconventional path—a difficult road for a woman in the late 1800s.

Then the teenaged daughter of a local prostitute is orphaned by her mother's murder, and Inez steps up to raise the troubled girl as her own. Inez works hard to keep a respectable, loving home for Antonia, carefully crafting their new life in San Francisco. But risk is a seductive friend, difficult to resist. When a skeleton tumbles from the wall of her latest business investment, the police only seem interested in the bag of Civil War-era gold coins that fell out with it. With her trusty derringer tucked in the folds of her gown, Inez uses her street smarts and sheer will to unearth a secret that someone has already killed to keep buried. The more she digs, the muddier and more dangerous things become.

She enlists the help of Walter de Brujin, a local private investigator with whom she shares some history. Though she wants to trust him, she fears that his knowledge of her past, along with her growing attraction to him, may well blow her veneer of respectability to bits—that is, if her dogged pursuit of the truth doesn't kill her first . . .
