Toes in the Tulips - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Sophie to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Sophie on the pages of Toes in the Tulips by Katherine H. Brown. This book is the third in the Adventures of Gladys Mystery series and was released last week.

Hello, everyone. Thank you for joining our humble little blog tour this week. Can I get a round of applause for these amazing bloggers? (Imagines clapping.) And for my author for giving me a prime spot as secondary character with a too-cute bookstore in the book Toes in the Tulips? (More clapping.)

I’m Sophie, owner of Babbling Books the one and only bookstore in the quaint town of Seashell Bay. I must say, I was rather excited to make my official debut this time. In previous books, this author has only alluded to me but clearly it is my time to shine. I mean, I realized I’m not the actual main character. My friend Gladys stars in that role. However, I do play a very important part. After all, it was me who somewhat accidentally pointed the cops in her direction by blabbing about the poisonous plants she had been researching on the computers in my bookstore.

That sounds worse than it is. Truly, I was trying to help Gladys, not throw her under the bus when Madeline was found dead in the community garden tulips.

Anyway, that’s all in the past. Gladys forgave me and we sorted everything out. I even offered up my computers again when she needed to do some digging into the victim’s past. (Doesn’t that sound so official ‘victim’s past’ – I love this detective stuff but I prefer to solve cases in books at my store. At least for now.)

It has been a little nerve-wracking watching the way Gladys pushes for clues and tries to avoid getting arrested and so forth. Still, I like to think that me teaching her how to use the Mystery Book Nook forum online really helped her out. I even heard a rumor she is going to start using the forum to put together some tips of some kind on her own to help other amateur sleuths out there. I’ve got to say, if she does that then I’ll have to subscribe to the Mystery Book Nook forum myself so that I can read it. Gladys has a, um, colorful experience with mysteries. There was that time on the cruise ship…well, nevermind she doesn’t like talking about that one. I also heard she had a run-in with an old nemesis in Texas and ended up on the suspect list for murder there, too. Needless to say, she’s got to have some good advice at this point since so far, she keeps coming out on the good side of the law after all of these misunderstandings.

Oh, would you look at that. A customer! I have to go sell some books, folks, but thanks for chatting with me today.

Yours truly,

Sophie, bookstore owner extraordinaire

A Bonbon Voyage Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Jay Saxon to Cozy Up With Kathy. You can find Jay on the pages of Bonbon Voyage by Katherine H. Brown. This book is the first in the Adventures of Gladys Mystery series.

An exclusive interview with Jay Saxon, the unnamed Security Guard from Bonbon Voyage.

“Please state your name for the record,” a black-suited federal agent held a recorder forward.

“Jay Saxon.”

“And your profession?”

Jay pulled at the collar of his uniform shirt, sweating uncomfortably. “Security Guard. Port Security, specifically assigned to guard duty for embarkation checkpoints.”

“And as such, part of your job is to x-ray luggage, correct?”

“Yes, sir,” Jay gulped.

“Mr. Saxon, tell me. Do you recognize this couple?”

“Now, I see thousands of people a day –” Jay stopped. “Wait, yeah, I think I recognize that lady. Is this about those bonbons? I stopped her; I swear. Didn’t let her take a single one on board. No outside food, per regulations.”

“Bonbons?” the agent asked.

“Yeah,” Jay nodded. “You know, little balls of heaven. Bite-sized dream desserts. Man, they were good,” he licked his lips. “But I still didn’t let her on the ship with any.”

The agent crossed his arms.

“Isn’t that what this is all about?” Jay asked nervously.

“No. This is about a murder.”

“Murder?” Jay balked. “I don’t know anything about murder.”

Rest, Relax, Run for Your Life - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm happy to welcome Katherine Brown to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Katherine writes the Ooey Gooey Bakery Mystery series. Rest, Relax, Run for Your Life is the first book in the series and was released earlier this year.

Kathy: In Rest, Relax, Run for Your Life Piper and Samantha have a long weekend at a spa. Do you ever go to spas? What's your favorite thing to do at a spa.

KB: I tried to convince my husband that I should visit several spas as research for this book (didn't happen lol) but I've actually only been to one spa on a vacation in Mexico. It was complimentary which made it even better! My favorite things were the deep tissue massage and the sauna. I was very uncomfortable in the steam room because I was alone and the air was so hot I literally lost my breath at first and had to sit and work to not freak out until it felt normal again.

Kathy: The duo won the weekend after raising the most money for human trafficking awareness and prevention. Why did you choose this cause?

KB: Great question! Human trafficking is an evil crime that I believe is much more widespread than people are aware of. It is getting more attention, but the standard image in most people's minds when human trafficking is mentioned is often of third world countries or only young girls. The sad truth is that there are victims of all ages, male and female, and they can be in the most wealthy and stable of countries.

This book, though it is fiction, can hopefully help people understand the ease with which human trafficking can occur anywhere and maybe even teach someone who needs to know ways to recognize it and report it.

I first learned of human trafficking as a little girl in a church camp when they did a video about it in poverty stricken areas. As an adult, I have a friend who works in victim services (any crime victim) and she was able to show me the US statistics of this horrible crime and victims it impacts. Others should know, too.

Kathy: This book is the first Ooey Gooey Bakery Mystery. Do you enjoy baking or do you prefer to pick up your treats at a bakery?

KB: Oh, I love both! I enjoy baking very much, even trying out my own recipes on occasion, but love to go to our favorite cupcakes in my area, Treehouse Cupcakes, and devour the delicious goodies there as well.

Kathy: What's your favorite ooey gooey treat?

KB: Chocolate....cake, brownie, cake in a ice cream shake, you name it. If it isn't chocolate, it doesn't always qualify as dessert in my book.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

KB: I'm an avid reader and read tons of genres but a year or so ago cozies became my addiction. For one thing, life has a way of being busy and stressful and a good cozy mystery let's you sink into someone else's problem rather than your own, usually with a big dose of humor and often a smidgeon of romance. It's the perfect combination! I went through a phase of psychological thrillers (which I can still enjoy) but cozies bring less bad dreams lol.

Loving them so much, it only made sense to start writing them when I decided to take the plunge and pursue my passion. I've always lived books, words, and writing.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

KB: I've written several children's books that were still of a tiny mystery and humor bent. This year, I added another children's book, Princess Bethani's First Garden Party, that I hope to turn into a series.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

KB: The Ooey Gooey Bakery mystery series centers around two best friends who own a bakery. I love books as pure entertainment but with this series I wanted to do something worthwhile as well which is how human trafficking became a large topic in book 1 and 2. I never planned to write more than three (not enough faith in myself) but I enjoyed the characters so much that book 4 was soon finished as well.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

KB: Piper is probably my favorite because she is the character I most relate to in personality quirks, even carrying a pocket knife all the time as a habit, though she definitely isn't written to be me. She is sarcastic, a good friend, and a lover of chocolate though!

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

KB: Honestly, no. The idea began with wanting to write a spa mystery. I jotted notes and forgot. Months later, I found my scribbles and decided to get more detailed. When I realized they needed to win a competition, that's when I decided to use the opportunity to feature some human trafficking info. So, you see, it never began as a concrete plan.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

KB: There was never any question that publishing was my end goal from the moment I opened a blank page in Microsoft Word. I've wanted to be a "real writer" since I was in elementary school. I even looked into publishing companies as a teenager but I didn't have the money to pay for creating a book in what I now know were vanity presses that you use to print a limited number of books, not really effective to print and sell them. I knew what I wanted to do but it took me much longer to figure out the how. Thankfully, I've stumbled into some amazing author groups the past few years and have been learning how to make my childhood dream become non-fiction!

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

KB: Jane Austen, Jana DeLeon, Catherine Coulter, and Alexandra Ripley.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

KB: One Book in the Grave by Kate Carlisle

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

KB: I love to read - I know, shocker. I dabble in small sewing projects every once in a while and do hope to learn to make a successful quilt eventually.

Other than that, I'd say being with my family is my biggest hobby and I travel as often as possible to the beach. If I'm ever a bestselling author (wink) and can afford the tickets, I want to add traveling to Ireland or Italy as travel is something I enjoy.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

KB: Water. Butterscotch or dark chocolate chips. Peanut butter. Protein powder.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

KB: I do. The going has been slow but I've actually just begun a spinoff series about Gladys, a secondary character in the Ooey Gooey Bakery mystery series, because so many of my readers mentioned they wanted to know more about her. I hope at least book 1 of the Adventures of Gladys series will be released in 2019.

I may add to the Ooey Gooey Bakery mystery series but at the moment no specific storyline has sprung to mind.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

KB: The writing itself. I love the vast possibilities as I weave words together on the page. It isn't always as easy as I want it to be but when the words flow and the characters take off, it is delightful and fun. I've caught myself laughing out loud as I type, hoping my readers will live the same nugget of humor as I do.

I have to say though, an unexpected bonus I've found that I truly treasure is the community and camaraderie with other authors and the sweetness of having readers reach out to you or come back for more because they actually liked those pages you've poured months into writing.

Whiskers in the Dark - A Spotlight & Giveaway

I'm happy to shine a spotlight on Whiskers in the Dark by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown. This book is the twenty-eighth in the Mrs. Murphy Mystery series and was released last week.

Whiskers in the Dark: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery by Rita Mae Brown

About the Book

Cozy Mystery 28th in Series
Bantam (June 4, 2019)
Hardcover: 288 pages
Death stalks the Blue Ridge Mountains as a centuries-old mystery resurfaces and murder mars the lead-up to an annual beagle competition, in a thrilling new tale from Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown.
A massive nor’easter has hit northern Virginia, where Mary Minor “Harry” Harristeen joins groundskeeping efforts at the National Beagle Club at Aldie as the date for its springtime Hounds for Heroes veterans’ benefit approaches. Harry’s fellow volunteers, including her oldest friend, Susan Tucker, comprise a spirited group of hunting enthusiasts, some former service members themselves. But things take a sinister turn when, after a routine tree cleanup along the Club’s hunting trails, retired foreign services officer Jason Holzknect is found dead, throat slit from ear to ear. Soon enough, another murder in their midst jolts the preparations, convincing Harry that the killer is familiar with the Club—and must be close by, masked in plain sight.
The intrigue extends to the grounds of Harry’s beloved local church, where the identity of an eighteenth-century skeleton wearing precious pearls remains a mystery. The anonymous woman’s neck had been snapped, and marks on the grave where her body was secreted indicate that someone recently tried to remove it, leading Harry to question how well she really knows those around her.
As always, Harry’s crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi share her determination to sniff out the foes among friends, even those long buried. Harry will need her four-legged companions’ help more than ever: a ghostly beagle only they can see may hold the key to the culprit.

2018 - A Year of Reviews in Review

As 2018 draws to a close I thought I'd take a look back at some of the great books I was privileged to read.

By the time the year ends I will have read at least 91 books. The most books I've read in a year, primarily due to me overextending myself...and also because so many interesting books are being published!

I was introduced to a lot of new series this year. I think my favorite is one that cannot fully be categorized. It's a historical, a paranormal, and a comedy all rolled up in a traditional mystery: the Barnabas Tew Mystery series by Columbine Noonan. I actually read the first two in the series this year. Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Missing Scarab and Barnabas Tew and the Case of the Nine Worlds are a delightful romp through mythology and great mysteries.

It should come as no surprise that I am partial to historical mysteries as well as paranormal ones.  MURDER ON MILLIONAIRES' ROW by Erin Lindsey also fits both of those categories.

Vampires are quite popular and I was delighted to discover a Vampire Mystery series. THE VAMPIRE KNITTING CLUB is the first in this series by Nancy Warren. Other top paranormal entries this year include A MAGICAL MATCH by Juliet Blackwell, CLAIRVOYANT AND PRESENT DANGER by Lena Gregory, and the new Magic Garden Mystery series by Amanda Flower which starts with FLOWERS AND FOUL PLAY.

I also love Gothics and THE BOOK OF THE BELOVED by Carolyn Haines fits that bill.

A historical series that really stood out for me is the Art Deco series by L. A. Chandlar. This series really should be read in order so start with THE SILVER GUN and continue with THE GOLD PAWN. Other historical mysteries that stood out this year include DEADLY FASHION by Kate Parker, MURDER, SHE REPORTED by Peg Cochran, and TURNING THE TIDE by Edith Maxwell. I also adore series that combines the present with the past. PAST AND PRESENT by Judy Sheluk is the second Marketville Mystery and I read all three of the Dr. Pimms Intermillennial Sleuth Mystery series by L.J. M Owen this year: OLMEC OBITUARY, MAYAN MENDACITY,  and EGYPTIAN ENIGMA.

The return I was most excited about was seeing Jack Shepard again. I waited ten years to hear from my PI and was thrilled for his return in THE GHOST AND THE BOGUS BESTSELLER by Cleo Coyle.

I also love food and was thrilled to find two new series showcasing Chinese and Mediterranean restaurants. I love Vivien Chien's Noodle House Mystery series, not only for her great characters and intriguing mysteries, but the setting, Cleveland, Ohio, where I once lived. Start with DEATH BY DUMPLING and continue with DIM SUM OF ALL FEARS. Baklava is one of my favorite desserts and, although known for their hummus bar, I might be able to find some in Tina Kashian's Kebab Kitchen Mystery series. Start with HUMMUS AND HOMICIDE and continue onto STABBED IN THE BAKLAVA. Want some breakfast? I love Sarah Fox's Pancake House Mystery series. The fourth book in this series was released this year, YEAST OF EDEN. She also started a new series, the Literary Pub Mystery series. I really enjoyed WINE AND PUNISHMENT. When speaking of food we can't forget beverages and I love the Whisky Business Mystery series by Melinda Mullet. DEADLY DRAM, the third book in the series, was released this year.

I'm fond of several religious mysteries and was delighted to discover Sister Agnes. You can find her in the Sister Agatha and Father Selwyn Mystery series by Jane Willan. Check out my review of the second book in the series, THE HOUR OF DEATH.

New books in favorite series also include LETHAL IN OLD LACE by Duffy Brown and TOUCAN KEEP A SECRET by Donna Andrews.

If you like short stories, you mustn't miss Gigi Pandian's THE CAMBODIAN CURSE & OTHER STORIES: A JAYA JONES TREASURE HUNT MYSTERY COLLECTION.

I read many more delightful mysteries and I know that I'm leaving out some great ones...but I hope you enjoy seeing some of the books that meant a lot to me this year. I'm certain that 2019 will bring even more great reading.

Lethal in Old Lace - Review & Giveaway

Review

LETHAL IN OLD LACE by Duffy Brown
The Fifth Consignment Shop Mystery

Finally, everything is going right for Reagan Summerside. Not only has hunky Walker Boone been cleared of any wrong doing-he actually proposed...marriage...to her! Add to the thrill of being engaged, customers are finally returning to the Prissy Fox. All is right with the world. Except for the dead body...which keeps disappearing! And the fact that Auntie Kiki stole from a dead man...and is being blackmailed by the man's grandson. Did I say everything was going right?

Reagan Summerside is back in another outrageously funny Consignment Shop mystery. As always there is laugh out loud humor, memorable characters, and nonstop action. From wedding planning to wake attending, with interesting transportation choices, and a retirement home with the nickname Sexy Pines, Reagan deals with it all with pluck, determination, and a little help from her friends.

LETHAL IN OLD LACE is all about love, acceptance, and loyalty. It's about doing all you can to help those you love and accepting them, faults and all, for who they really are. That's truly a great lesson. It's also endlessly entertaining and will leave you with a smile on your face long after you finish reading. And you'll never look at a Snickers bar the same way again.

So grab your martini and settle in for a fun time in Savannah. Don't know how to make a martini? Never fear Auntie Kiki shares several drink recipes at the end of the book.
