Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder - An Interview

I'm pleased to welcome Brandi Bradley to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder is Brandi's most recent book and it was released last week.

Kathy: Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder is a noir novel set in an outwardly charming Southern town. What makes discovering dark secrets so intriguing?

BB: I don’t know the psychology of it, but I do know it’s why Dateline is still so popular. Around the time that the Murdough case was on everyone’s feed – like everyone I knew sent me an article about it – I remember going to my whiteboard and slapping a post-it on it that read, “The myth of the good Southern family.” Everything looks so pretty on the outside, but the inside is gross and sometimes rotten. And there is a sense of glee when powerful people fall or witnessing the process of taking down people who get too big. I think it affirms those suspicions that all those images of perfection were just a performance.

Kathy: In the book a young entrepreneur is killed and everyone points the finger at his ex-girlfriend Gabbi, a "New Age, neo-hippie, miracle-manifesting, smokeshow". That's quite a description! As someone who could also be branded as New Age and woo woo, I wonder why do these terms raise ire and cause people to assume the worst?

BB: I am also a little woo woo and I think it works on both levels. I think some people are going to be annoyed and roll their eyes, while others are going to be intrigued. Living in the south is interesting because the same people who might refer to someone as being a New Age neo-hippie with ire, are also collecting crystals or visiting a psychic once a week.

Kathy: The book is told through the shifting perspectives of three women, Lindy, Gabbi, and Jenna. Why choose to do this instead of focusing on one point of view?

BB: I always knew I wanted to write from multiple viewpoints because I wanted to show how alike and different all these women were. And I liked being able to write from a biased perspective – their idea of what they witnessed and how it’s different from what another person witnessed. Years ago when I read Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, I loved how she had each chapter a different perspective and knew I wanted to try that.

Kathy: What first drew you to noir?

BB: I like noir because there is an inability to trust anyone, and yet, the detective is almost always foiled because they trusted the wrong person or because of assumptions they made. I like noir because women are both sexy and smart– even if they are inclined to stab you in the back when they pull you in for a kiss. I like that mysteries are solved even if there is no justice. I don’t love the cynicism, but you can’t have it all.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

BB: I’ve written a few memoir pieces that I am proud of. And I have written a ghost story once, although I would never call myself a paranormal writer. When I first started to get a handle on the kind of writer I wanted to be, I was always drawn to stories that people would gossip about from the viewpoint of the people dealing with the fall out. And often, that’s what mysteries and noirs are. People dealing with the fall out of someone else’s choices. And now I realize how much I love working in the mystery genre. There are so many different approaches to mystery that I am excited to explore.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

BB: At some point, all the characters were my favorite, especially the more shady ones. I had a lot of fun writing Ned Rockford, this charming guy who’s been propped up by the Good Old Boy System for a long time. These guys always have a plan – either coordinating their legacy or digging themselves out of a hole they got themselves into, but they’re almost always forgiven because they are charming and entertaining. And everyone knows they can’t trust them. Writing that character was a lot of fun.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your book?

BB: Often I will have these little inspirational triggers where I will read or watch a story and I’ll think, I want to write that, but not that. So I’ll make a note on my whiteboard that will say something cryptic like “Woman on Woman stalking with a witchy vibe”. When I started Pretty Girls, I was reading a lot of stories about women who were being labelled “crazy” by ex-boyfriends and families of ex-boyfriends. And it grew from there.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

BB: I got tired of waiting to be “discovered”. I’m not a 20-year-old literary ingĂ©nue with a patience problem. I am a 40+ woman who has written novels before, gone to school for an MFA, a Ph.D., and yet could not get the literary world to pay attention.

I traditionally published some short pieces, but when it came to getting an agent for my novels, I kept coming up against road blocks.

For decades I had been walking around waiting to be seen as a novelist, waiting to be discovered, waiting to be chosen and eventually I was like, “This is exhausting. I’m choosing myself!”

I sat down and made a list of what I would need to make it happen for myself. I started an LLC, I bought ISBNs, and I contacted editors and designers. I set a launch date and spread the word.

And now, this is the second book I have published myself, and the best part was I didn’t have to ask permission or run my ideas through a committee.

It’s the hardest job I have ever had, but it’s also all mine, every good decision and bad decision. And that’s so liberating.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

BB: Megan Abbott, Joyce Carol Oates, Donna Tartt, Charlotte Bronte.

But I am too much of a fan girl to be expected to act like a reasonable human being around writers I admire. More than once, I have made an ass out of myself at a conference for rambling or spontaneously crying, so I have resigned myself from appreciating them from afar.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

BB: I just downloaded The Woman Who Fooled the World by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano because I want to read it before I watch Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix. Right now I’m consuming a lot of stories about medical fraud and factitious disorder.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

BB: Lately I’ve been baking a lot of bread. I love to be in my kitchen, and I’ve been watching short videos on no knead bread.

I like to crochet blankets and knit scarves as gifts. Many people who saw me at book festivals this year probably saw me knitting or crocheting.

I’m a planner person, so I adorn my Filofax with stickers and washi tape. It keeps me organized and decorating it gets me excited to review a to do list.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

BB: Chalula hot sauce, Rancho Gordo heirloom beans, Junior Mints, Seltzer, Topo Chico when I splurge, but more likely Kroger brand for everyday

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books?

BB: I want to write something in the same universe as Pretty Girls, but not the same characters. It’s another Southern small town noir, but with an amateur detective/writer who chooses to help a local high schooler search for a missing man. It’s my loving tribute to Murder She Wrote, but darker.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

BB: I’m never bored. When I run out of content to consume, I can always make my own. And all that content I’d been consuming is research for future projects. So it feels very cyclical. I read things and then turn them into new things.

I have always taken the advice from Toni Morrison that if no one is writing the book you want to read, you should write it yourself. And lately I have been burned out by all my content – books, podcasts, TV shows – and it’s not because there isn’t anything good out there. I mean Yellowjackets just dropped a new season. I just know it’s time for me to write a new book.

 Blurb:

When a young entrepreneur is killed, everyone in town points fingers at his New Age, neo-hippie, miracle-manifesting, smokeshow of an ex-girlfriend, Gabbi – including the victim’s best friend, Jenna. As detective Lindy D’Arnaud and her partner Boggs search for a motive, they begin to wonder if this is a case of jealous violence or shady business dealings gone sour.

In Lindy’s personal life, things aren’t much clearer. When Lindy’s wife’s ex-boyfriend–and sperm donor to their baby–decides to move back to town, she finds herself competing for her wife’s affection. Can they be postmodern in Western Kentucky where living as a queer person is tenuous enough already?

Told through the shifting perspectives of Lindy, Gabbi, and Jenna, “
Pretty Girls Get Away With Murder” is a twisty page-turner for fans of Southern noir and NBC’s “Dateline.”

Josiah Reynolds knows this with good reason. She’s solved many a murder, but Josiah prays that she does not stumble across another body. The stress is too much, and she is happy to be invited to a winter sledding party at Haze Corbyn’s home. Corbyn is a former syndicated critic for newspapers and magazines, who retired to the Bluegrass, dabbling in his love of horses.

The party is a kickoff for the Victoria Weathers’ film retrospective at a local theater. Miss Weathers is even coming for the showing of her first movie and Corbyn’s event. Josiah is excited to meet her movie idol, so it comes as a big surprise when Haze Corbyn turns up dead at his own party.

About Abigail Keam

Abigail Keam is an award-winning and Amazon best-selling author who writes the Josiah Reynolds Mystery Series about a Southern female beekeeper turned amateur sleuth living in the glamorous world of oak-cured bourbon, antebellum mansions, and Thoroughbred farms.

Besides loving history, Kentucky bourbon and chocolate, Abigail loves honeybees and for many years made her living by selling honey at a farmers’ market like her protagonist, Josiah Reynolds. She is an award-winning beekeeper who has won many honey awards at the Kentucky State Fair including the Barbara Horn Award, which is given to beekeepers who rate a perfect 100 in a honey competition.

Miss Abigail has taken her knowledge of beekeeping to create a fictional beekeeping protagonist, Josiah Reynolds, who solves murder mysteries in the Bluegrass. While Miss Abigail’s novels are for enjoyment, she discusses the importance of a local sustainable food economy and land management for honeybees and other creatures.

She currently lives on the Kentucky River in a metal house with her husband and various critters. She still has honeybees.

Dumpster Dying - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

DUMPSTER DYING by Michelle Bennington
The First Hazardous Hoarding Mystery

Birdie Harper lives alone with her treasures. And the ghost of her dead husband. Collecting all manner of things from garage sales and dumpster dives, Birdie finds it painful to throw anything out, though she will gift some things she finds, like the ceramic angel that was a perfect present for Jenna, the young cashier at the local convenience store. When Jenna goes missing Birdie knows something is terribly wrong. With an older sister trying to boss her around and a possible suitor from church, Birdie is determined to uncover the truth behind Jenna's disappearance-no matter the cost.

I really enjoyed my first trip into Birdie Harper's world. I love the realness that is Birdie. She's gone through a lot and is coping the best way she knows how. She's determined, funny, feisty, and kind. Only one thing bothered me a bit. Continually described as an old lady, I was stunned when I discovered she's just a year older than me! In any case, the mystery is intriguing and I love Birdie's determination to help. Excellent character dynamics and a distinct sense of place really drew me in.

One of the things I appreciate most about DUMPSTER DYING is the way in which the hoarding aspect is portrayed. Approached with care and understanding, it is also very realistic from the tingling and obsessive thoughts to the condition of Birdie's home as well her emotions in regard to it all. Birdie is a hoarder, but she is not a caricature.

DUMPSTER DYING is a unique mystery that incorporates timely real life issues making it an outstanding first entry in a new series.

Devil's Kiss - A Review

 Review

DEVIL'S KISS by Michelle Bennington
The First Small Batch Mystery

Divorced, broke, and living with her grandma, Rook Campbell's life is looking grim, especially as she just quit her job as an underappreciated, underpaid, untenured professor. Her best friend, Bryan, helps her land a job at Four Wild Horses Distillery, where he works as an accountant. Things are hectic on her first day on the job and there's an underlying sense of subterfuge as well as outright hostility. Something shady is definitely going on at Four Wild Horses. When Bryan is found dead Rook is certain it's murder and vows to discover who killed him. Things get increasingly dangerous for Rook who is desperate to keep her job. But will her decision to stay at the distillery and look for Bryan's murderer get her killed as well?

The first Small Batch Mystery is a more mature traditional mystery that introduces readers to some interesting characters. Rook is doggedly determined despite everything that goes wrong with her life-and boy is there a lot. The author seems to relish making Rook's life challenging. She does have support from the best friend who's like a brother to her (who the author quickly kills off), her grandmother (who the author soon gives major health issues), and her ex-husband (who has a jealous fiance). See what I mean about challenges?! I really like Jimmy and dislike the Sheriff and almost everyone at the distillery. They are all, however, fun to read about, especially witnessing their machinations and Rook's efforts to derail them.

I really enjoyed the complex mystery. So many people behaving badly made for some shocking scenes. Seeing Rook stand strong and fight back was exhilarating and the porch scene with Jacie still makes me grin.

DEVIL'S KISS is a mystery with grit that makes you thankful for your life and hopeful that things will get better. I look forward to seeing the distillery recover and Rook move on with her life, stronger and even more resilient.

Devil's Kiss - An Interview

I'm pleased to welcome Michelle Bennington to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Michelle writes the Small Batch Mystery series. Devil's Kiss is the first book in the series and will be released May 31, 2022.

Kathy: In Devil's Kiss we meet Rook Campbell who just started working at the Four Wild Horses Distillery. I love a variety of spirits with bourbon being a big favorite. Are you a bourbon fan?

MB: I am a bourbon fan, though I rarely drink. When I do drink bourbon it's neat and straight and either Woodford Reserve or Buffalo Trace. And I'm slowly making my way through the bourbon trail, so I might find one I like more. But there's a host of sauces and foods with bourbon in them that I really enjoy. I espeically love bourbon candy. Bourbon balls are a Kentucky specialty and it's tradition in many homes every Christmas (I make a mean bourbon ball, if I do say so myself!). Rebecca Ruth's in Kentucky (the inventor of the bourbon ball) has several types of bourbon candy.

Kathy: What made you decide to set your mystery series at a distillery in Kentucky?

MB: I was born and raised in Kentucky and I love my home state and its rugged beauty. I don't see many stories set in Kentucky or even many mentions of Kentucky. I just really wanted to highlight my home state. And when I tried to think of something distinctly "Kentucky" that most people would recognize, it was either bourbon or horses. And I think there was already a KY Derby series, so I chose bourbon. Also, I wanted to write a cozy that had nothing to do with bakeries, knitting, animals or the other usual topics. Those are fun, of course. I have nothing against those. I just wanted something a little different.

Kathy: I've been lucky to visit a few distilleries. Years ago I saw some while on vacation in Kentucky and more recently here in Western New York and the Finger Lakes. Is the Four Wild Horses Distillery based on a real distillery, or did it come purely from your imagination?

MB: I love visiting distilleries. The process is so fascinating to me. The main one in the book is an amalgamation in both name and description. I took bits from Four Roses and Wild Turkey and since horses are a staple livestock in Kentucky, I just had to have that in the title too! The landscape of the distillery in the book is based loosely on Buffalo Trace, mixed with my imagination.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

MB: I don't like consuming media with a lot of gratuitous sex, violence, and cursing. I do occasionally watch certain shows that have that stuff--Outlander, Game of Thrones, and Ozark come immediately to mind--but the overall story must be amazing for me to stick with it and even then it's sometimes just overwhelming. I also wanted to write books that my mom would enjoy. So I went in search of such books to read and stumbled upon the cozy genre. I admittedly am not widely read in the cozy genre. But I started with The Aurora Teagarden series, which I love, and decided to start there because I had already read Charlaine Harris' True Blood series. Then I started Susan M. Boyer's Liz Talbot series, which is great. And I'm hooked. The great thing about cozies is that they are just great mysteries without all the "junk." I really don't see myself quitting them.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

MB: I write historical fiction as well. I have a historical mystery series that was just picked up by Level Best Books and I'm currently researching a historical fiction based on a true crime.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

MB: The Small Batch Mysteries is a series of three books so far. The first is Devil's Kiss where Rook lands a job at a distillery and becomes embroiled with helping solve the murder of her friend and discovering who stole the rare Devil's Kiss bourbon.

The second book, Mermaid Cove, is loosely based on a real distillery in Kentucky that is all female owned and operated (Jeptha Creed)--a rarity in the bourbon world. In this book, the mother of Rook's best friend, is a co-owner of Mermaid Cove and goes missing when her bourbon is poised to win a prestigious award and Rook is determined to find her friend's mother.

In the third book, Unbridled Spirits, Rook and the Four Wild Horses Distillery team are working a special Halloween event at a restored historical home of a former bourbon baron when people begin to die. Rook once again set out to help find the killer.

And the historical mystery series I mentioned earlier is called the Widows and Shadows series and begins with book one, Widow's Blush. Set in 1803 England on the cusp of a second war with France, a young widow, Ravenna, Lady Birchfield becomes entangled in finding who is killing the foreign secretaries and threatening England's balance of power.

Widow's Fire is the second book and centers around a mysterious black opal, called Widow's Fire. Legend has it that the keeper of the opal will have immense power and never be conquered, making widows of their enemies wives. When the guardian of the opal is killed and the gem goes missing, Ravenna is determined to discover who has stolen it before it falls into the wrong hands.

In Widow's Peak Ravenna follows her runaway niece to the European Continent to convince her to come home. During the journey, Ravenna meets with a two-time widower and fortune hunter embarking on his third marriage. Ravenna suspects him of fortune hunting in a most despicable manner.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

MB: I think Prim from Devil's Kiss is my favorite character, so far. She's a grandmother who has seen hard times and has come through with strength and resilience. She's wise, bold, and takes no guff.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

MB: My primary inspiration was the real-life Pappy VanWinkle heist in Kentucky in 2014, which rocked the bourbon world. And then I attended a ghost tour at the Buffalo Trace distillery one evening and that was a light bulb moment for me. I thought, "What if someone was found murdered at the distillery?" So I wove the two ideas together into Devil's Kiss.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

MB: I've wanted to be a published writer since the age of 13. I had many years of self-doubt and veering off the path, but since 2014 I have doggedly pursued my goal. I want to tell stories and entertain people. And, if for a moment, I can provide enjoyment or relief or escape to a reader, then I count myself successful.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

MB: Oh gosh, there are so many authors. I can't hardly choose. Jane Austen for sure, Charlotte Bronte, CS Lewis, and Lord Byron, though he'd most assuredly drink all the wine, cause a ruckus, and be asked to leave.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

MB: Death by Darjeeling by Laura Childs

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

MB: I'm a member of a belly dance troupe and have danced belly dance and fusion style belly dance for over ten years. I also love to crochet and paint. I love anything artsy and craftsy so I'm always looking to try my hand at something new. I also like to travel and see new places though I don't get to do it nearly enough. And I LOVE going on ghost tours, which is really just a history tour in disguise, but as a history buff, it's one of my favorite things to do. So anytime I visit a new place, a ghost tour is usually part of the adventure.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

MB: Coffee, tea, eggs, apples

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

MB: I do. I've already written the Mermaid Cove manuscript (book 2 in the Small Batch Mysteries) and am working on book 2 of the Widows and Shadows historical mystery. And I'll be plotting book 3 for both series very soon. In the meantime, I'm also working on a Southern Gothic cozy called Dumpster Dying. About a hoarder, Biridie Harper, who lives with a ghost and solves crimes. I plan on self-publishing that book and I envision it will be a short series. I'm really close to having the second draft of that book done. And then I have a manuscript of a historical fiction that I'll work on revising this year as well as researching and writing another historical fiction. So there's a lot of work on my plate! But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

MB: Creating a fictional universe and filling it full of people and trying to figure out how to get those characters in and out of their problems.

One April After the War: Louisville to Cumberland - A Review

 Review

ONE APRIL AFTER THE WAR: LOUISVILLE TO CUMBERLAND
By G. S. Boarman
M. Warner Annals Book I

In April of 1870 Secret Service agents Argent and Merritt have finished up a counterfeit case and agree to escort a woman from Kentucky to the White House on behalf of President Grant. Instead of an elderly lady they find an unusual young woman. A young woman who does not want to go.

ONE APRIL AFTER THE WAR: LOUISVILLE TO CUMBERLAND is a work of historical fiction that also works as a morality tale. Issues such as race, gender, and human rights all come into play. Mary is not the "normal" woman to be found in Kentucky in 1870. She is grief stricken. She has strong beliefs. She has some idiosyncrasies. There is some moral ambiguity here. People continually are doing things in her best interest. But is it in her best interest, or is it just making things easier for those doing it? That goes for not only the secret service men, but Mr. Howard and Miss Carrie, people who actually love her too.

I love the historical detail, and the fact that the days match this year's April days is a fascinating feature. I enjoyed recognizing facts, such as Roebling's suspension bridge, and places, such as Athens, Ohio, and seeing things though M's eyes. The relationship between M, Merritt, and Argent is fascinating, at once a job, perhaps something more. But in her eyes, is it growing friendship, or certainty that she is a prisoner?

Although I knew the book wouldn't finish the story, it says Louisville to Cumberland on the cover after all, I didn't anticipate the book ending on a cliff hanger! I am now desperate to see what happens next, even though I know Book II will not answer all of my questions as there is also a Book III!

Part travel journal, part morality tale, part mystery, ONE APRIL AFTER THE WAR: LOUISVILLE TO CUMBERLAND brings readers on a post Civil War adventure encouraging a thoughtful glimpse into 1870s America.

Beaches, Bungalows, & Burglars - A Spotlight

Today I'd like to shine a spotlight on Beaches, Bungalows, & Burglars by Tonya Kappes. This book is the first in the Campert and Criminals Cozy Mystery series. I enjoy several of Tonya's series, but haven't started this one...yet.

Blurb

Hi. I'm Mae West. No. Not the actress.

If you would've told me year ago that I was going to be broke and penniless after my husband took everyone to the cleaners after he pulled off one of the biggest Ponzi schemes, leaving me a run down campground, a set of camper keys, before he escaped prison and when the FBI came to the campground to see if I helped him escape, then the no good you know what floated up to the top of the lake in that campground making me the number one suspect, I'd said you were lying.

Dead as a Doornail Mother's Day Interview & Review

I'm pleased as punch to have Viv Lowry visit Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Viv on the pages of the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. DEAD AS A DOORNAIL is the fifth book in the series and will be released Tuesday!

Kathy: Viv, I'd like to thank you so much for spending part of your Mother's Day here with us. To commemorate this holiday, do you have any special Mother's Day memories from when Kenni was little?

Viv: Oh yes. I would take her to a little boutique in Lexington and get her the cutest little ruffled dress, ruffled socks and the cutest Mary Jane patent leather shoes. Now...that's not to say she wasn't a pill when trying them on or maybe I took a nerve pill when she was trying them on, but we always looked so cute at church. At least, I thought she looked cute.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being a mama?

Viv: Kenni wasn't always the easiest girly girl. She liked watching all those Western movies with my dad, her Poppa. It just plum wore me out! But I knew that baking and cooking for her was a way to keep her in the kitchen. I loved talking to her and spending time with her.

Kathy: What's the thing you like most about your daughter being the Sheriff of Cottonwood?

Viv: I like that she's in charge and knows everything before the Henny Hens. I get the gossip before it gets to them, if you know what I mean.

Kathy: What's your least favorite thing about having your daughter be the sheriff?

Viv: I hate how she carries that darn gun. I tell her all the time that she could just carry some lysol and spray it at people, but she insists on that darn weapon.

Kathy: Do you think Kenni takes more after you or your husband?

Viv: Neither. She's my daddy made over. Down to the occupation.

Kathy: I freely admit to a hankering for your pot pie...but I do have a fear. I love pot pies, but I hate pees and so many pot pies have pees in them! Are there any pees in your pot pie?

Viv: A little secret, you can put any vegetables in your pot pie. You can skip the pees all together. But you do know that if you eat your pees with honey, it makes your pees taste funny, it sticks them to your knife and I've eaten them that way all my life.

Kathy: You were a prime murder suspect when I last wrote about your daughter. Has that changed your outlook on life?

Viv: Nothing! I can't worry about no little murder. I've got bigger things to do. Another little secrets. . . .I've got Kenni being a the maid of honor in the Mayor's and Polly Parker's wedding. Its' probably the closest time I'll ever see her walk down the aisle.

Kathy: What's one piece of advice you could give all the mamas out there?

Viv: No matter what dreams you have for your children, you'll be amazed at the wonderful adults they turn into.

DEAD AS A DOORNAIL by Tonya Kappes
The Fifth Kenni Lowry Mystery

Lucy Ellen Lowell may have been an adult, but her behavior was more that of a spoiled brat. If she didn't get what she wanted when she wanted it, she was apt to not only cause a scene, but write a negative, mean spirited review in the newspaper.  When Kenni gets a call from Lucy Ellen's husband saying his wife is dead Kenni rushes to the scene to find Lucy Ellen not only dead, but murdered. It may look like a heart attack, but Poppa's presence indicates murder. Who Killed Lucy Ellen? Could it be Tina? Possibly Jolee? Or some other recipient of Lucy Ellen's hate filled rants? Kenni must solve the murder with help of her Poppa's ghost while enjoying her developing romantic relationship with her deputy. However, the Sheriff's biggest problem is filling in as maid of honor for Cottonwood's preeminent wedding in a dress right out of Gone With the Wind...the Carol Burnett Edition!

It's great being back in Cottonwood, engaging with these wonderful characters. I want to play euchre and eat those delicious goodies the ladies bring. I also want give Duke a big hug and a treat! I love seeing Kenni's relationship with Finn blossom. Finn is a perfect partner in more ways than one! Not only is he the perfect law enforcement backup, he's a fantastic boyfriend as well. I like that Kenni is now using the techniques she uses with her Poppa with Finn as they solve the case together. But she's keeping one major secret from him...will telling him destroy what they're building together?

There are always lots of laughs in a Kenni Lowry mystery and DEAD AS A DOORNAIL is chock full. Between "happy fat", bridesmaid duties, and quirky southern characters, readers will be giggling as Kenni solves her latest murder.

DEAD AS A DOORNAIL will put a smile on your face with its finely tuned mystery infused with Southern charm.

Six Feet Under - Review

Review

SIX FEET UNDER by Tonya Kappes
The Fourth Kenni Lowry Mystery

Kenni Lowry's mama done lost her mind! Sure Viv's head got a little swelled up when she won the cooking contest with her chicken pot pie, but now her face is swollen too! The big news is that a famous food critic is bringing his TV show to town and is debating featuring Ben's Diner and Viv's pot pie or a barbeque joint up in Clay's Ferry. Meanwhile Viv is acting odder and odder. A face that looks somewhat different, checking out the competition and causing a ruckus, and mighty shifty behavior make mama suspect number one when the critic is found dead...with a pot pie on his nightstand! Sheriff Kenni Lowry may be forced to take a backseat in the investigation, but with the help of her deputy and the ghost of her Poppa, she'll prove her mama innocent.

Poppa is back and that means murder! The murder hits much closer to home in the fourth Kenni Lowry Mystery, not with the victim, but with the prime suspect! The evidence points directly to Kenni's mama and Kenni finds herself with a bit of a moral dilemma. Love and the desire to protect your loved ones whatever the cost compete with honor, duty, and responsibility.

We see a more human Kenni in SIX FEET UNDER. One with more foibles, but one also finding enjoyment outside of her job as Sheriff. I am delighted to see the relationship between Kenni and Finn grow, even as more conflicts erupt. Of course, I always enjoy reading about Duke and Poppa and love their interactions as well.

SIX FEET UNDER is a wonderful mystery that explores the themes of love and duty with a humorous Southern flair.

Ax to Grind -A Visit from Sheriff Kenni Lowry's Mama - Guest Post, Giveaway, & Review

I'm getting out of the way as Kenni Lowry's mama takes over Cozy Up With Kathy Today. You can read all about her in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes.

Shooooweeee.

I tell you, being Sheriff Kenni Lowry's mama is a hard job. I mean, it was hard just being her mama, but the mama of the sheriff. Now that's somethin' I've got to live up to and it's hard. You know all them henny hens, that's what we call all the gossipy old ladies in Cottonwood, they call me when someone dies or some crime happens because they think I've got some inside scoop. Even if I did, I can only give them a tidbit just to give them somethin' to chew on.

Let me tell you, being a southern woman is not all it's cracked up to be. Not only do we all stayed dolled up all the time, join multiple committees, belong on several clubs, and live in pearls. . .we also have to cook.

I'm not talking any old recipe. I'm not talking just throwing things together.  I'm talking making from scratch cooking. You see, your cookin' abilities will make you or break you on the societal chain.
It's a competition of sorts, but no one would ever have the gall to call it what it is. We send days making several of the same casserole or dish and bring the best one. I know, because I do the same thing. I didn't win the big Cottonwood bake off and have my pot pie featured on the Cooking Channel for just throwing stuff together.

Now, go on and get out of here. I've got a southern chicken pot pie to make for Beryle Stone's repass. And I can't sit here all day gabbing about nothin'.

Oh, yes! That Beryle Stone. Mmhhmm, the big author with that huge box office, Academy Award winner from the 60's. She's a citizen of Cottonwood and she came back here to retire. Unfortunately, she died. So sad.

But I did hear from the girls in the Auxiliary group and down at Tiny Tina's Salon, which meant I heard it in two different places and it can't be rumor, that Beryle had written a tell all book. And it's about the people in Cottonwood. Tell all! She's gonna spill her guts and everyone in town is dying to get their hands on it.

AX TO GRIND by Tonya Kappes
The Third Kenni Lowry Mystery

Cottonwood, Kentucky is abuzz. Not only are tourists and fans flocking to the town for the estate sale of late author Berlye Stone, but with election for Sheriff not yet two years away campaigning as begun in earnest. Sheriff Kenni Lowry gets a bad feeling when Berlye's assistant demands higher security measures until Berlye's most recent manuscript, a book which is a tell-all about the real residents of Cottonwood, can be found. When the assistant is found dead behind the antique store with another woman injured inside Kenni knows she has to act fast. It's a good thing she has Deputy Finn Vincent and the ghost of her Poppy, Cottonwood's last Sheriff, to help her!

The Kenni Lowry Mystery series is filled with Southern charm and gossip with just the right touch of danger. Kenni Lowry is a woman I'd be right pleased to not only call my friend, but my Sheriff. She's competent and knows how to do her job and deal with the residents of her small town. Yet she doesn't have all the answers and can fall victim herself, professionally and in matters of the heart!

AX TO GRIND is a great addition to the series as Kenni is faced with another murder and accused, not only of not being able to keep her town safe, but playing kissy face with her deputy! There are plenty of laughs, especially from Kenni's mama, and lots of fun, such as saving Hettie from mysterious critters and doing a little matchmaking. Tonya Kappes includes the right amount of police procedure, a little romance, and a lot of gossip to create a great mystery.
