Dear Diary,

It’s been a couple of days, and I’m sorry I haven’t written. I just couldn’t. It’s impossible to wrap my mind around everything that’s happened.

As I write this, I’m sitting on my porch swing wrapped in my down comforter watching the sun rise over the mountains. It’s so beautiful and peaceful that I can almost imagine that everything is okay. That everything is normal.

But it’s not.

So yeah, I’m questioning my life choices—again. Maybe that’s not fair. It’s not like I ever really stopped questioning them. Maybe I shouldn’t have moved here. Who would have thought that tiny little Stonebridge, Vermont would be more dangerous than Boston?

I suppose I should start at the beginning.

Two nights ago, the Harvest Festival kicked off with the masquerade party on the village green. It started off so well! I mean, seriously, nothing can rival October in Vermont. Cool, crisp fall air and the mountains ablaze with autumn foliage. Even after the sun went down, the red, orange, and yellow paper lanterns in the event tent mimicked the autumn leaves so perfectly. I was so proud of Alicia and the festival committee for all they did. And oh, you wouldn’t have believed the costumes! I was dressed as Annie Leibovitz, hoping some of her brilliance might rub off on me!

The band was playing, everyone was dancing, and all of us in the camera club were busy snapping photos. And then…

The scream.

There’s no other way to put it. Alicia and I were standing in line for a hot apple cider when we heard it. We’d just been joking about how Emma and Connor were wearing coordinating costumes—as if they totally aren’t dating. But what do I know? I’m only her mom, and she’s made it clear that I’m to Stay. Out. Of. It. (picture me zipping my lips)

Anyway… Alicia and I sprinted out of the event tent, and… I’ll never be able to erase the image of Emma cradling poor Iris. We thought the young woman must have tripped and fallen into the fountain. If only.

When Emma came home for the festival this weekend, I’m sure she was expecting a break from her nursing duties. Instead, as soon as we helped her move Iris to dry ground, she got right to work performing CPR. I have to admit, I was so proud to see her in action. I only wish the outcome had been different.

Oh, and I should probably also mention something—only because I’m still a little shaken by it. But it’s really not important. At least, that’s what I’m telling myself. Anyway… You must remember me mentioning a man last June. You know, the one I saw at The Crow—tall, piercing green eyes—the one who nearly made me fall off my barstool. Well, he moved to Stonebridge. Not that I care or anything. Not at all.

So yeah, I met him last night—in person. Let’s just say it was majorly awkward. That is, I was majorly awkward. And seriously, I’m completely bewildered. I don’t know what to do. It’s clear he and Nate have already become good friends. Huge yikes. The last thing I need in my life is a ridiculously handsome Irish guy who makes my heart race and turns me into a bumbling idiot.

But I’m way off topic.

Back to Iris. If you haven’t already guessed from my ramblings, she’s dead—murdered. It’s completely unthinkable. Now, with the dreaded Detective Cram poking that beaky nose of his around Harmony and her housemates, Harmony has asked me to help. I wanted to tell her, “no way.” I really, really did. Of all people, Harmony should know better. Besides, it’s not like I’m a detective or anything. But you know me. Like it or not, I can’t let her down.

There’s a murderer in Stonebridge, and everyone in the club is on board to help me investigate. The Stonebridge Keep It Snappy Shutter Club is on another case! Stay tuned.

It's autumn in Vermont, the leaves are at their peak, the tourists are arriving en masse, and the Keep it Snappy Shutter Club, led by Bobbie Brooks, is ready to capture everything on film. Stonebridge’s annual harvest festival is off to a fun start with a masquerade party on the village green. But the good times quickly end when Iris is found unresponsive after apparently falling into the fountain. And then Mackenzie is rushed to the hospital! While Mackenzie is certain she made an error while foraging and ate poisonous mushrooms by mistake, Iris' fall was no accident, she was murdered. Now Bobbie and her camera club will search through their film for clues. Will Bobbie find a murderer or will the killer put an end to her first?

MASKED INTENTIONS is a study in relationships and choosing how the past shapes the present and future. Evolving relationships are at the heart of the story, indeed the mystery itself. 

I'm happy to be back in Stonebridge, Vermont, especially in autumn. There's a lot going on in the second Camera Club Mystery with an ambiguous murder, (who was the actual target?) a myriad of suspects, and a few subplots. I appreciate how every aspect was deftly handled with no one thing overshadowing another. I still like Bobbie, though I wish she's just face up to her reactions to a certain Irishman. I'm pleased to see that Emma has matured since the first book in the series.

MASKED INTENTIONS is a complex mystery that looks at relationships, desire, and murder with autumnal flair. Grab a cozy blanket and have your camera at the ready as you settle in for this delightful sophomore outing!

While still working as an accountant, it's her flourishing photography business that is even more exhilarating for Robyn Cavanagh. Since becoming the photographer for Linden Acres farm, she's become Garland, New York's premiere photographer. Robyn is thrilled to be the official photographer for publisher Natalie Hoffmann's holiday party. Bookends is elegantly decorated for the season and Robyn is able to take a multitude of photos highlighting the magnificent estate along with the guests. Unfortunately, the festivities are cut short when Russell Nowak, Natalie's significant other, is found dead. Did the killing have to do with Russell's plans to develop in Garland, Natalie's publishing company, or was the reason more personal? Having been instrumental in solving two previous murders, Robyn decides to see if she can solve this one.  

THE HOLIDAY PHOTO MURDER is a mystery of relationships. Relationships between friends and family, those who work together, romantic partnerships, and even the community itself. All are important and all play a role in this mystery. One of my favorite relationships is that between Robyn and Will. Definitely a couple, they work together brilliantly, whether it's helping Robyn capture the perfect shot, simply enjoying each others company, or solving a murder!

I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery with its many twists and turns and the quietly subtle way in which Robyn looked into matters, with the help of Will and her parents. I love how her folks really get into the investigation. 

With an elegant Christmas backdrop and down to earth characters THE HOLIDAY PHOTO MURDER is an enjoyable mystery, no matter the season.

In addition to taking family portraits she's just landed a job as photographer for Linden Acres Farm. Recalling happy memories at the family farm herself, Robyn is now preserving the joy found in every aspect of the place, from its apple orchards to the Fall Fun Festival to the family itself. Given fairly free rein Robyn is excited to arrive at the farm as dawn breaks, that golden hour when the sunlight perfectly illuminates the fruit. After taking a variety of photos her session comes to an abrupt end when she discovers the body of Doug Paxton, the newly named CEO. Was this a tragic accident? Or murder? As Robyn continues to capture Linden Acres in photographs she's also making discrete inquiries to help capture a killer. 

I absolutely love Robyn Cavanagh. Robyn is smart, dedicated, and a person I'd enjoy being around. I love that she's able to show her creative side with her photography, and the fact that's she's earning money with her skill is icing on the cake. I also really appreciate her relationship with Will. They have an amazing friendship. Could it be something more? Everyone around them believes it already is. Should it be? I'm not sure, but, whatever the case they balance each other perfectly and make a great team.

 

I really enjoyed the mystery in the second Robyn Cavanagh Mystery. There were lots of viable suspects, including one I really wanted to be guilty, a lot of family drama, and more than one surprise. The manner in which Robyn and Will investigated was refreshing, a subtle kind of sleuthing. Robyn's parents had me chuckling as they helped the investigation as well. But not everything was pleasant and charming. There was some excitement too!

 

Well plotted, filled with wonderful characters and a sense of community THE GOLDEN HOUR MURDER is an absolutely delightful mystery.

Caught on Camera - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Kara Lacey to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Lacey writes the Camera Club Mystery series. CAUGHT ON CAMERA is the first book in the series and was released last month.

Kathy: In CAUGHT ON CAMERA we meet Bobbie Brooks, a photographer in Vermont. Do you like to take photos? Do you consider yourself a photographer, or just a point and clicker?

KL: I consider myself a photography enthusiast. I have tons of enthusiasm and limited talent. When I first started spending time in Vermont, I was taken in by its natural beauty—the mountains and forest, the quaint villages, and the charming farms. I bought myself a camera and started learning. I take photos daily, mostly with my iPhone, but I still explore the area with my DSLR.

Kathy: Bobbie is a member of the local camera club. Do you belong to any clubs in your town?

KL: The idea for the camera club came from a suggestion that I start one. I’d been out taking photos and walked into my village’s country store with my camera hanging from my neck. A man approached me, curious about the photos I’d been taking. He suggested I start a club. The idea intrigued me, but with a full-time career in Boston, I only visited Vermont on weekends, and didn’t feel I had the time. I don’t belong to any local camera clubs, but have been involved with photographers I’ve met online. We’ll do photography challenges together, post our photos in a private group, and critique each other's work.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

KL: My mom. She’s always been an avid reader of both cozy and traditional mysteries. When I finally got curious enough to ask her for book recommendations, she pointed me toward Katherine Hall Page, Diane Mott Davidson, and Ann Cleves. Once I got started, I was hooked.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

KL: None that I’m published in. Last year during NaNoWriMo, I wrote a messy rough draft of a romance. I had a lot of fun with it, but I’m undecided whether I’ll pursue publishing in that genre.

Kathy: Tell us about your series. 

KL: My Camera Club series combines my love for photography with my love for Vermont. Sometimes I think of the stories in this series as cozy mysteries with a hint of women’s fiction thrown in. Each story includes a mystery with lots of twists and turns, but in the background is the story of my protagonist, Bobbie Brooks, and her personal growth.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

KL: My protagonist, Bobbie, is my favorite. The books in this series are her story.

Of my side characters, I probably like Rose the best. She’s spunky and fun-loving—always up for whatever adventure Bobbie throws her way. But she’s also smart in a way that isn’t outwardly obvious, and she keeps Bobbie in line.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

KL: I’d say my small Vermont village is my biggest inspiration. Not only is it beautiful and quaint, but the interactions between people living in a small town where the landscape can make life difficult is fascinating. There’s a strong community spirit in rural Vermont.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

KL: That’s a good question. I sometimes think that I never really made a conscious decision to publish. When I first started writing Caught on Camera, I was mostly writing for myself. As I wrote, I learned, and one thing led to another. I joined writing organizations, found critique partners, attended mystery conferences, and met an agent who took me on. None of this happened overnight, but the steps I took led to publishing. It’s been quite a journey.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

KL: Wow, there are so many authors I’d love to talk to. I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with Amor Towles. His prose is beautiful. I’d love to know how he does it. Chris Bojalian is a Vermont author. I’ve heard him speak, and he’s both kind and fascinating, and I’d love to learn how he does all the research necessary for his books. I’ve always admired Louise Penny’s talent for bringing her setting to life. What mystery fan doesn’t want to visit Three Pines? I’ll round out my party with Ann Cleeves. Not only does she write the most atmospheric settings, but her characters are fascinating.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

KL: I’m currently reading a romcom by Leah Dobrinska—EXES DON'T. She’s fabulous (and also writes the Larkspur Library cozy mystery series). EXES DON'T is the third in her Fall in Love Series, and just published this week.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

KL: Reading is probably my primary hobby. With so many good books out there, I can’t keep up. I don’t take photos like I used to, but I still consider photography to be one of my favorite hobbies. Art journaling is also a fantastic creative outlet. I’m terrible at it, but there’s nothing quite like getting messy with paints and collage.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

KL: Yogurt, pasta, herbal tea, and dark chocolate. (Not terribly exciting—haha)

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

KL: Yes. I’m currently revising the second book in my Camera Club Mystery series. This one takes place in Vermont’s beautiful autumn season. The murder will happen at a masquerade party during the village’s annual Harvest Festival. I’m also getting ready to draft the third book in the series, which will involve the Christmas holiday season, a wedding, and a murder. I’m having a lot of fun with both of them.

KL: Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

I love the flexibility. I have deadlines, but as long as I keep myself on track, I decide what I write, when I write it, and where. I work best first thing in the morning, and I love that I can pour myself a cup of coffee and just get started wearing my yoga pants and a sweatshirt. All the things I’ve learned and people I’ve met have been a huge, unexpected bonus as well.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA by Kara Lacey
The First Camera Club Mystery

Widow Bobbie Brooks has left the big city of Boston for small town rural Vermont. While her sister and a good friend are neighbors Bobbie still feels like an outsider. Hoping to fit in to the community she starts a photography club. But their first outing turns disastrous when Bobbie discovers the body of one of its members. Thinking it had to be a tragic accident Bobbie nonetheless feels something is off. What she didn't expect was murder, and that she is not only the main suspect, but the town pariah as well.  

CAUGHT ON CAMERA is a story about starting over and finding yourself. It serves as a reminder that you can't control everyone in your life and sometimes you need to step back. Starting new is always a challenge, especially when you're older. Making new friends, being part of a group, these things somehow become more difficult as Bobbie discovers. Although she is starting fresh in a new state, she's lucky in that she already has supports in place, her sister and best friend. I really like her sister, Alicia, a smart woman of many talents. I know I'd like to try some of her cheese and jams! One minor character who really annoyed me was Emma. She really needs to stop being so needy and grow up. Jeesh. She acted more like a whiny spoiled brat that a young adult starting a career. Darcy, of course, is a dream.

The mystery was interesting, as was the photography theme. I enjoyed seeing the possible motives as well as the interesting behaviors of the suspects. After I finished the book I realized all the subtle clues that were carefully placed throughout the story. Tiny, seemingly insignificant things, that weren't really part of the plot but were there, like little beacons, their true meaning only coming through once the mystery was solved.

Complicated relationships and attention to detail make CAUGHT ON CAMERA a compelling start to a new series.
