Vacations Can Be Murder - A Review, Excerpt, & Giveaway

 Review

VACATIONS CAN BE MURDER:
A TRUE CRIME LOVER'S TRAVEL GUIDE TO NEW ENGLAND
VOLUME 1
By Dawn M. Barclay

True crime enthusiasts who like to travel, even if it's only via armchair, will appreciate VACATIONS CAN BE MURDER: A TRUE CRIME LOVER'S TRAVEL GUIDE TO NEW ENGLAND VOLUME 1. This handy book gives each state its own chapter which is then divided into sections: basic crime statistics and brief segments about the crimes followed by a sampling of true crime books set in that state. The next section includes various places to see including accommodations, restaurants, and other attractions. Addresses, websites, and current hours and prices are also given as well as more snippets about the crimes that took place there. The last section for each state features the itineraries, multiple ones for each state giving driving directions to a set of true crime sights. As with any travel book the problem is that they can easily become outdated. Information such as prices and hours of operations can change quickly and the author urges people to call before making any definitive plans. In addition, the stories remain the same even if restaurants and tour companies fade away.

The book includes notorious true crime cases, such as Lizzie Borden and Kitty Genovese, and historical cases such as the Salem Witch trials and the Boston Strangler, however a large number of the cases are tawdry murders which only die hard true crime fans, or those with some association, would be interested. I personally wouldn't care to visit the site where a man repeatedly stabbed his neighbor, though I may want to pay respects nearby where a woman was hanged for witchcraft.

This book is exceedingly well researched with a wonderful bibliography and index at the end. I really enjoyed reading about the haunted restaurants and hotels and found those bit even more interesting than some of the true crime sections.

Well organized and easily readable VACATIONS CAN BE MURDER: A TRUE CRIME LOVER'S TRAVEL GUIDE TO NEW ENGLAND VOLUME 1 is an enjoyable travel guide for fans of true crime and those interested in more unique travel destinations.

Read an excerpt from Vacations Can Be Murder: A True Crime Lover’s Travel Guide to New England:

This is from the Crime Summaries section of the Connecticut chapter. The actual addresses of these crimes are all included in the Itineraries section of the chapter.

Hartford may be considered one of Connecticut’s most dangerous cities, but its suburbs have seen their fair share of crime over the years.

The Hartford Witch Trials occurred between 1647-1663. In all of Connecticut, there were 43 trials and 16 executions, many in Hartford and three in Wethersfield. On May 26, 1647, Alice (Alse) Young of Windsor was the first to be executed. Servant girl Mary Johnson was the first to confess to witchcraft in Connecticut but was likely coerced by extensive torture. She was executed somewhere between 1648-1650 (reports vary).

In 1839, The Amistad criminal and civil cases were tried at Old Statehouse in Hartford. The case revolved around a mutiny by, and subsequent charging of, 53 Mende African men, women, and children who had been captured and were being transported between Sierra Leone and Havana, Cuba aboard the ship to serve as slaves. The story was the subject of the Steven Spielberg film, Amistad. Several other Connecticut locations connected to the trial can be found at https://www.nps.gov/subjects/travelamistad/visit.htm.

Joseph “Mad Dog” Taborsky was a murderer sentenced to death after a string of brutal robberies and murders in Hartford and West Hartford in the 1950s. He was sentenced twice to be executed for two different crimes, but the first conviction was overturned due to the mental competency of a witness, his brother Albert, testifying against him. (Albert was later declared insane.) In December 1956, a little over a year after his release from prison, Taborsky launched a 14-month murder spree that killed gas station attendant Edward Kurpewski and customer Daniel Janowski, package store owner Samuel Cohn, shoe store customers Bernard and Ruth Speyer, and pharmacy owner John M. “Jack” Rosenthal. The second conviction stuck, and he died in the electric chair in 1960, the last execution in Connecticut until that of Michael Bruce Ross in 2005.

In 2004, Matthew Steven Johnson was convicted of the 2000 and 2001 slayings of three female sex workers he murdered—Rosali Jimenez (33), Aida Quinones (33), and Alesia Ford (37)—who were all found dead in the Asylum Hill neighborhood of Hartford. Each of the women had drugs in their system and were found with their bodies stomped upon, strewn with Johnson’s semen, and with their pants pulled down around one leg. Johnson was found guilty and sentenced to three consecutive 60-year sentences at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.

Lazale Ashby became one of the youngest prisoners on Connecticut’s death row for kidnapping, raping, burglarizing, and murdering his neighbor Elizabeth Garcia in 2002, when he was just 18. He was suspected of another Hartford rape, as well.

Ashby has actually been tried and sentenced three times for Garcia’s murder, the final time in 2023, when he confessed to the crime. Now that Connecticut has abolished the death penalty, he’s been sentenced to 46.5 years in prison. In addition, he was convicted and received a 25-year sentence for the 2003 fatal shooting of 22-year-old Nahshon Cohen of Manchester, whose body was found on a street in the city’s North End.

Speaking of Manchester, in August of 2010, the city became the location of a mass shooting at a beer distribution company, Hartford Distributors. Disgruntled former employee Omar Thorton, forced to resign after video evidence revealed he’d been stealing and reselling the company’s beer, fatally shot eight coworkers and injured two others. He then committed suicide on site. Those who knew him cited racism as the reason for his upset, but these allegations were disputed by the firm and not substantiated by the investigation that followed.

William Devin Howell’s rape and murder spree, which started on New Year’s Day in 2003, took place in Seymour, West Hartford, and Wethersfield, as well as New Britain. Triggered by a fight with his girlfriend, Howell succumbed to years-long rape fantasies, Referring to himself as the “Sick Ripper,” he would lure female drug addicts, unlikely to be missed, into his “murder mobile.” There, he would rape them, often videotaping bizarre sex acts, before murdering them and disposing of the bodies in a seldom frequented area behind a strip mall in New Britain which he called his “garden.” He was arrested in North Carolina and plea-bargained his way into a fifteen-year sentence for the manslaughter of Mary Jane Menard. However, new evidence that surfaced while he was already in jail earned him six consecutive life sentences (360 years in prison) to be spent at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.

In 1986 at the Jamaican Progressive League, a club in Hartford’s North End, Bonnie Foreshaw stopped to get a beer and ended up committing a murder that bought her the longest jail sentence ever handed down to a woman in the state. Having endured a lifetime of sexual and spousal abuse, when Hector Freeman offered to buy her a drink and wouldn’t let up when she turned him down, the encounter triggered her. She drew her handgun to fire a warning shot, but Freeman protected himself by using a pregnant woman, Joyce Amos, as a human shield. Foreshaw’s bullet killed her accidently.

Foreshaw spent the majority of her jail time at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic where author Wally Lamb taught a writing class for prisoners. Lamb took up her cause, believing she’d been over-sentenced, and thanks to his help, Foreshaw was granted clemency after serving just 27 years of a 49-year sentence. Once released, she changed her name to Bonnie Jean Cook and helped other ex-convicts adjust to life on the outside until her death in 2022.

All of these murders pale in comparison to the crimes of Amy Archer-Gilligan. While she was charged with five deaths (though only tried for one), she may have killed as many as one hundred. Archer-Gilligan ran the Archer Home for Elderly People and Chronic Invalids in the Hartford suburb of Windsor, where countless older residents were bilked out of money and then poisoned by arsenic, including the murderer’s own husbands. Other locations tied to Archer-Gilligan include Newington, where she and her first husband James Archer lived with John Seymour until he died, and then they transformed the home into Sister Amy’s Nursing Home for the Elderly. In 1917, she was convicted of the murder of Franklin Andrew and sentenced to death by hanging, but she appealed. During a second trial in 1919, she pleaded insanity and was convicted of second-degree murder, earning her a life sentence. In 1924, she was transferred to the Connecticut General Hospital for the Insane in Middletown, where she remained until her death in 1962. The play Arsenic and Old Lace is loosely based on her story.

Also in Hartford, the Circus Fire that killed 168 persons and injured 412-700 others through trampling and asphyxiation occurred on July 6, 1944 (“The Day the Clowns Cried”) and is considered one of the country’s worst fire disasters. The Big Top Tent was coated in paraffin plus gasoline or kerosene for waterproofing; therefore, it was highly flammable. On top of that, some of the exits were blocked by animal chutes. Arson was suspected; others blamed a carelessly tossed lit cigarette. A mentally ill man named Robert Dale Segee, 21, of Circleville, OH, confessed to setting the fire, as well as up to 30 other blazes in Maine, New Hampshire, and Ohio. He later recanted his confession and was never tried in Connecticut. However, Segee was indicted and convicted in Ohio on two charges of arson and served eight out of a four-to-forty-year jail sentence. He died in 1997.

Finally, on May 18, 1988, Billy “Hot Dog” Grant, a bookie who was in charge of Connecticut safe houses for New York’s five families, was reportedly murdered in the parking lot of the Westfarms Mall in Farmington. Grant, who had owned Augie and Ray’s Hot Dog and Hamburger shop in East Hartford, and later the South End Seaport restaurant on Franklin Avenue, was suspected of having given up details of the hiding spot of the brother of a mafia boss. He is supposedly buried underneath a Farmington residence.

A Side Dish of Death - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

A SIDE DISH OF DEATH by T. C. LoTempio
The Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery

Fox Hollow is abuzz about the murder mystery fundraiser to promote adopt-a-cat month and support the Fox Hollow Shelter. Celebrity chef Reynoldo Venery is overseeing the food preparation and not even a hurricane predicted for that night will stop people from coming to the sold out event. Shell McMillan, owner of the Urban Tails Pet Shop and former star of Spy Anyone, is ready to enjoy the evening with her homicide detective boyfriend, Josh, with her cats acting as ambassadors, despite the fact that Patrick, her cheating ex fiance is in town. But when the storm knocks the power out at the event Shell finds a dead body...a real dead body. Someone has killed the temperamental chef! Although Josh immediately takes charge, with her ex a prime suspect Shell and her former television partner Gary can't help but start their own investigation. With some shrewd deductions and feline help will they solve another murder?

I was thrilled to be back in Fox Hollow for one of my favorite series. I really love the characters of the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries. Though former television stars, both Shell and Gary are down to earth people I would love to have as friends. They are smart and work well together. They also prove that men and women can just be friends without any romance! I like their significant others as well and hope that Shell and Josh will be able to share some non murderous time together. Of course, my favorite characters are the cats! While Kahlua and the visiting Serendipity are lovely, it's Purraday and Princess Fuzzypants who truly are the stars of the show. I also have a soft spot for Dahlia!

The mystery itself was confounding with multiple possible motives. Limiting the number of suspects in this closed circle mystery didn't make solving the murder any easier. I enjoyed how Shell used the resources at hand to get to the bottom of things.

With smart humans and even smarter cats A SIDE DISH OF DEATH is a fast paced closed circle mystery that promotes cat rescue. A volatile chef, a hurricane, and murder make this one fundraiser that won't soon be forgotten!

About A Side Dish of Death

A Side Dish of Death (Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery 5th in Series
Setting - Connecticut
Publisher: ‎ Beyond the Page Publishing (February 25, 2025)
Print length: ‎ 257 pages

When a celebrity chef is murdered, Shell McMillan has to cook up a plan to trap the killer of a man for all seasonings . . .

With adopt-a-cat month in full swing in Fox Hollow, pet shop owner Shell McMillan decides that hosting a night of murder mystery dinner theater will be a fun way to raise funds for the cause. But she didn’t realize that the celebrity chef she’d hired for the event would turn out to be a tyrannical snob, or that her scoundrel of an ex-fiancĂ© would turn up with his own shady agenda. Still, the show must go on, and as the lighthearted plot on-stage unfolds, the scene off-stage turns decidedly darker when the chef is found murdered.

Rather than question an entire roomful of possible suspects, Shell determines that looking into the victim’s past will lead her to the culprit more quickly. What she finds is that the chef had left behind a disreputable past and a trail of disgruntled people, including a long string of women he’d wronged and a host of others who may have been out for revenge. But as Shell closes in on the killer, the killer is closing in on her. And she’s discovering that while too many cooks can spoil the broth, being a murderer’s next target can really ruin your appetite . . .

The Mystery in the Margins - An Interview, Review, & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome L. L. Gray to Cozy Up With Kathy today. L. L. writes the Havenwood Cozy Mystery series. THE MYSTERY IN THE MARGINS is the first book in the series and was released

Kathy: In THE MYSTERY IN THE MARGINS we meet Harper Sullivan, who has inherited her great-grandmother’s bookshop. Have you ever dreamed of owning a bookshop?

LLG: Oh, absolutely—though, in my dream, I don’t actually work in the bookshop. I think I dream of owning a cozy library instead, where I can curl up with baked goods, sip coffee, and pet the shop cat who magically handles all customer service. It’s the perfect business plan, don’t you think?

Kathy: Harper yearns for a place to call home, preferably with a delightful bakery nearby. Do you have a local bakery you like to visit? What are your favorite baked goodies to purchase?

LLG: I’m convinced that any bakery is my happy place. If it smells like sugar, chocolate, or bread, I’m in! Seasonal treats always catch my eye—gingerbread in winter, pumpkin anything in fall—but I’m also a sucker for a good chocolate croissant. And if there’s a caramel drizzle involved? Game over.

Kathy: The Havenwood Cozy Mystery series is a paranormal series. Why choose to add magic?

LLG: Because life is just better with a little sparkle, isn’t it? I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of hidden magic—things that feel ordinary on the surface but have this incredible depth and wonder beneath. Honestly, I think we all could use a little magic to brighten our everyday lives. Plus, who doesn’t secretly wish their bookshop could talk back to them?

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

LLG: There’s something about the combination of quirky small towns, lovable characters, and a touch of intrigue that just feels like a warm hug. Add a bit of humor and some baked goods, and you’ve got me hooked. I’ve always loved solving puzzles, so writing cozies felt like the perfect way to bring all those elements together.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

LLG: I do! I have a dark fantasy series called Smoke and Shadows, which is pretty much the polar opposite of Havenwood. Think grit, fire, and sharp edges. But if you’re into smart, strong, and sassy characters, it might still be your cup of tea—albeit a very dark one.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

LLG: The Havenwood Cozy Mystery series is like Gilmore Girls meets Hogsmeade, but with less drama and more magical shenanigans. It’s full of quirky characters, cozy small-town vibes, and just enough mystery to keep you guessing. Meanwhile, Smoke and Shadows dives into a much darker world—think epic battles, morally gray characters, and magic with consequences. Both are built around strong, clever characters, and each has its own unique flavor.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

LLG: Oh, it’s so hard to choose! I adore writing Luna because she says all the things I keep in my head (and throws in a sassy rabbit curse or two for good measure). But Ignatius is also a blast—he's such a cute little dragon! Also, there’s something about writing a magical shop that has its own personality. And of course, Honey is a delight, though she always makes me hungry with her treats!

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

LLG: Absolutely! My goal was to create a cozy, bookish community filled with quirky, relatable characters who feel like they could be your best friends. I wanted Havenwood to feel like a place readers could escape to—a town full of magic, charm, and characters you’d want to have coffee (or tea!) with while solving mysteries and getting into just the right amount of trouble.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

LLG: Honestly, I was looking for a new adventure. Writing and creating magical worlds gave me the chance to step into something exciting and share that spark with others. I wanted to bring readers along for the ride, to invite them into these stories. Plus, keeping all the bookish chaos bottled up seemed like a disservice—and to my characters would not approve. I wouldn't want to make Luna mad at me!

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

LLG: What a party that would be! I’d invite Rhys Bowen for her cozy mystery vibes, J.R.R. Tolkien for his incredible world-building (and to pick his brain about crafting magical worlds), Agatha Christie for her unmatched ability to craft mysteries, and Shayne Silvers for his absolute shenanigans and unexpected plot twists. It’d be the perfect blend of cozy, creative, and chaotic—and I’d probably spend the whole evening laughing.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

LLG: I’m diving into Auburn Tempest’s Urban Druid Chronicles—it’s such a fun series with great characters and lots of magic. Perfect for getting lost in!

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

LLG: Other than writing, I’m a musician, I love to draw, and I’m happiest when I’m out in nature—preferably somewhere with trees, a good breeze, and maybe a cozy spot to read.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

LLG: Coffee (because life), chocolate (obviously), apples (to balance things out), and cheddar cheese (because I'm still a Wisconsin girl at heart).

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

LLG: Oh, absolutely! I’ve got 17 books (and a couple of novellas) planned out for Havenwood—though knowing me, that number might grow. I also have a few other series battling for my attention, but alas, there are only so many hours in a day.

Kathy: What’s your favorite thing about being an author?

LLG: Hands down, it’s connecting with readers. Getting to chat with people who love books, magic, and mystery as much as I do is the absolute best. My readers are my kind of people!

THE MYSTERY IN THE MARGINS by L. L. Gray
The First Havenwood Cozy Mystery

It's been a long time since Harper Sullivan has been in Havenwood, Connecticut, but she's ready to settle down in the magical town. As the sole heir, Harper is looking forward to running Spellbooks, her great-grandmother's bookshop, even as she regrets not spending much time with Granny Bea before her death. But her excitement starts to fizzle when she learns that someone broke into the shop and stole several rare books. Her dreams take another hit when she learns that she is not the sole heir. Granny Bea has set a competition between Harper and her cousin to determine who will inherit Spellbooks. Harper has a lot of great ideas, but will her desire to be Spellbooks' new owner be enough to beat out the cousin she never knew existed? Perhaps if she were to discover who stole Granny Bea's books she'd have a leg up in the competition. Gathering old and new friends together Harper is determined to find the books, inherit the bookshop, and make Havenwood her forever home.

Welcome to Havenwood! I am in love with this absolutely enchanting town and its residents...well, most of them. Harper is a charming protagonist. She's caring, but has gumption and is not afraid to bend the rules a bit. I like that her magick is more mundane-and imminently useful! I also appreciate that she doesn't automatically trust everyone, even if she likes them, especially that certain Druid. A more than competent group of law enforcement officers are investigating and I really like each of them. I also like Harper's friends, new and old. I think my favorite character has to be Luna. This feisty rabbit with her rabbity cursing had me in stitches!

There are no dead bodies in the first Havenwood Cozy Mystery, but there is a very well plotted intriguing mystery. Shadowy figures and a dastardly cousin, along with some shady activity bring angst. Action scenes provide excitement, but there are plenty of laughs too.

Witches, vampires, werewolves, and more mystical characters come together to create a delightful series debut in THE MYSTERY IN THE MARGINS. You'll be craving some of Honey's baked goods while enjoying the love and camaraderie of good friends who are like family. I truly enjoyed my first visit to Havenwood and I can't wait to go back!

A Corpse Among the Carolers - An Interview

I'm pleased to welcome Debra Sennefelder back to Cozy Up With Kathy today. Debra writes the Food Blogger Mystery series. A Corpse Among the Carolers is the seventh book in the series and is being released today!

Kathy: In A Corpse Among the Carolers murder disrupts the Jingle Bell Stroll, a community caroling event. Do you go Christmas caroling?

DS: No. I’ve never been. But I would love to even though I can’t sing. I think it would be so much fun!

Kathy: What's your favorite Christmas carol to sing? What about your favorite Christmas song to listen to?

DS: Great questions. All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey and Hark the Herald Angels Sing.

Kathy: I love reading holiday themed mysteries. What makes ones set during Christmastime so special?

DS: Setting a cozy mystery during Christmastime adds an extra layer of warmth and magic that draws readers in. The holiday season creates a rich backdrop filled with traditions, community gatherings, and an overall sense of togetherness—ideal for a cozy mystery. It’s a time when people reconnect, share memories, and lean into nostalgia, making the stakes feel even higher when something goes awry. A Christmas cozy mystery feels like curling up with a warm blanket—there’s excitement and suspense, but it’s wrapped in the comforting glow of holiday lights and festive cheer.

Kathy: Your book includes tasty and toasty holiday recipes. Do you have favorite dishes you make every year? Do you roll out new recipes as well?

DS: Our Christmas dinner includes a roast beef with red cabbage that I absolutely love. And every year I bake cookies. I will try a new cookie recipe every couple years at Christmas but that’s about it. I usually stay with the tried and true and the recipes my family and friends love.

Kathy: Was there a specific inspiration for this story?

DS: I wanted to write a mystery set during Christmas and I have no idea where the idea for the caroling event came from. It just popped into my head one day and I loved it and fleshed out the story.

Kathy: Are you able to share any future plans for Hope?

DS: Yes. I’m currently writing her next book. I’m in the beginning of the first draft of that manuscript. All I can say about that story is that I’m loving it and it’s set during a winter snowstorm.

Kathy: When it comes to writing I understand there are 2 general camps-plotters, who diligently plot their stories, and pansters, who fly by the seat of their pants. Are you a plotter, a panster, or do you fall somewhere in between?

DS: I’m a plotter. I love a detailed outline before I begin writing the story. But even though I have an outline, as I’m writing the story sometimes things change.

Kathy: Authors are required to do a lot of their own marketing, especially for a new release. What's your favorite part of marketing your work? What do you dislike about marketing?

DS: I enjoy connecting with readers whether it’s through a blog post, an interview or a live video. While there’s no part of the process I dislike, I do find that the added workload of marketing on top of writing a book is stressful.

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

DS: Besides the next Food Blogger mystery that I’m writing now, I do have a couple of manuscripts lined up to write in 2025 but at this time I can’t share much more than that about them.

Hope Early is fully immersed in the spirit of the Christmas season, until the sounds of joyful carolers are silenced by the words “Ho-ho-homicide” . . .

Food blogger Hope Early always gets a hearty holiday laugh from knowing that the weeks leading up to Christmas are as frantic as they are festive. But in spite of everything she has to do, the one thing she always has time for is the annual Jingle Bell Stroll, a night when the community gathers to sing their hearts out and enjoy each other’s company. This year’s caroling feels especially heartwarming, until the final note lands with a thud when Hope finds the body of the man who’d volunteered to play Santa, a knife plunged into his back.

With virtually the whole town present at the caroling, the list of suspects seems endless. It doesn’t take long, though, for both Hope and the police to turn a sharp eye on the victim’s bitter and vindictive ex-wife, along with his new wife, who may have been after his money. Then Hope unearths a clue that suggests the dead man may have been hiding a sordid past and connections to unseemly characters. But as she closes in on the killer, they’re determined to wring her neck before she can ring in the new year . . .

Includes tasty and toasty holiday recipes!

Booked on Murder - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

BOOKED ON MURDER by Allison Brook
The Eighth Haunted Library Mystery

The countdown has begun. The wedding of Carrie Singleton and Dylan Avery is just two weeks away. Wedding preparations are keeping Carrie busy, so she's annoyed when her boss informs her she has to write an article for the newspaper about the library's latest discovery-the diary of Verity Babcock, a woman hung for witchcraft in 1652. Passion for the subject and fury that the woman was never exonerated soon tempers Carrie's annoyance and the article practical writes itself. Thrilled that their good friend, Victor, is letting them use his home as their wedding venue the couple check the property while he's away. While they determine the perfect seating arrangement, they also find something unexpected-the body of a murdered man in the backyard! Recently released from prison for bank robbery, it looks like he returned to dig up the stolen money-but someone killed him and took the loot. Was it his partners in crime, whose names he never divulged? Or maybe his cell mate who was also recently released? Carrie may be busy with her wedding plans and dealing with reactions to her article, but that won't stop her from trying to help police solve the murder before her wedding bells chime.

It's sad that this is the final book in the Haunted Library Mystery series. Carrie has grown in so many ways since she arrived in Clover Ridge and it's been a delight witnessing it. The series winds things up nicely, though I was looking forward to seeing them in their new house.

The characters and their relationships have always been the foundation of this series and it's no exception in BOOKED ON MURDER. Even the relationship between the secondary characters new to this book is significant. I love the relationship between Carrie and Dylan. They truly "get" each other and it's fun watching them work together, even if it's solving a crime on their wedding day! Seeing their friends and family gather together in celebration was delightful.

The eighth Haunted Library Mystery has three major components, though they do all intermingle. There's the murder, the diary, and the wedding. The mystery was compelling, the diary intriguing, and the wedding heartwarming. Blended together it made for a satisfying conclusion to a wonderful series.

Cats, Carats, and Killers - A Review

 Review

CATS, CARATS, AND KILLERS by T. C. LoTempio
The Fourth Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery

Shell McMillan, owner of the Urban Tails Pet Shop and former star of Spy Anyone, is proud to be a sponsor of Appraise for Strays, a fundraiser for the local animal shelter. While several unique items have come in, a lot of interest is being shown in a little wooden box, too much interest. One such interested person is Pete Martin, a bad penny who's returned to town. When he winds up dead, diner owner Gus Morton becomes the prime suspect. Could the box and the murder be tied to an old jewelry heist? With the FBI in town investigating and a hot shot journalist insinuating himself in the investigation Shell will do what she can to prove Gus is innocent with help from friends, including the special felines, Purrday and Princess Fuzzypants.

An unsolved robbery with missing diamonds, an unassuming wooden box, and murder combine in the delightful fourth Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery.

A jewel heist combined with an antiques appraisal? Yes, please. It's a great combination. The possibility of discovering treasure is always a thrill, one of the reason those antique appraisal shows are so compelling. Could that godawful painting from Aunt Hatty be an actual Picasso? Or that vase you got at the charity shop. Could it be worth more than the $2.00 you spent?

Readers are introduced to the original crime which is then skillfully woven through the new mystery, that of the wooden box and the murder. Important information and clues are clearly laid out providing several “ah ha” moments as pieces click into place. Then there's the penultimate action scene with a major twist!

I enjoy the camaraderie of the friends, particularly Shell and Gary and the quiet romance between Shell and Josh. I like that Gary is the voice of reason and that Shell shares everything with the police and FBI, well, almost everything…at least until she goes off to confirm one last thing, which was almost her undoing. Fortunately, help wasn’t far away. The characters are well developed with their own strengths and foibles, but as wonderful as the humans are, for me it’s the cats who steal the show. Purraday makes certain that clues are found and messages get across. Princess Fuzzypants goes above and beyond in this story and proves she’s not just a pretty face. And Kahlua looks on, above it all.

CATS, CARATS, AND KILLERS is a finely crafted mystery that will have you dreaming of diamonds and perhaps looking around at your own possible treasures.

Cats, Carats, and Killers - A Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome Kahlua to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Kahlua on the pages of the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery series. Cats, Carats, and Killers is the fourth book in the series and was released last month. Be sure to come back to the blog Thursday, April 4, 2024 when I'll share my review!

A chat with....Kahlua the cat!

Hello there! I’m Kahlua, Shell’s cat. I’m Shell’s first cat, a purebred Siamese that Shell’s mother gave her when she was still working on Spy Anyone and living with Patrick. I loved the L.A. life – in the apartment Shell and Patrick lived in, I had my very own room, complete with a kitty gym! So, as you might expect, I was a tad disappointed when Shell and Patrick broke up...and even more so when Shell decided to move us to Fox Hollow, Connecticut!

Moving to Fox Hollow meant that I also acquired a brother...Purrday. He’s actually a very nice cat and pretty street savvy. He lost an eye in a fight with another cat (but I understand the other cat came out of it worse). It doesn’t slow him down any, though. Purrday, as well as Shell and her friend Gary, all seem to have a flair for detective work. Me, not so much. I’m happy just chilling out at home taking a nap or hunting for mice!

The newest addition to our family is a silky red-haired Maine coon cat that Shell and Gary named Princess Fuzzypants. Purrday found her abandoned in the pet shop’s backyard. He certainly seems to be smitten with her. I’m still reserving judgement.

This detective hobby of Shell’s does worry me a bit at times. Not that she would knowingly put herself, or any of us, in danger, but hey, when you’re chasing down a killer you never know. She does have a rather close call in her latest adventure, Cats, Carats and Killers. Does she manage to escape? Do one of we cats end up helping her out of a tight spot? Well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out!

It’s been nice chatting with you, but it’s time for my cat-nap! Oh, and then I have to be sure I’m in the kitchen when Shell gets home, or else Purrday and the Princess might decide my food bowl is fair game.....

The Stuff of Murder - An Interview & Review

I'm pleased to welcome Kathleen Marple Kalb back to Cozy Up With Kathy. Kathleen starts a new series with THE STUFF OF MURDER, the first book in the Old Stuff Mystery series. It was released last week!

Kathy: In THE STUFF OF MURDER a small Connecticut town becomes the setting for a movie, with Christian Shaw acting as a consultant. Have you ever been involved in a movie production? Would you want one filming in your town?

KMK: Working in New York, I’ve walked past a bunch of them on my way to or from the office…but I don’t think I’d want one in my town! I’ve never been directly involved in a movie, though I think I’d like to try writing a script someday.

Kathy: Christian deals with old stuff, in particular, 18th and 19th century household goods. If you could have an expertise in historical items, what would your specialization be?

KMK: Clothes! My favorite thing about researching and writing historical mysteries is that I get to dress the characters. A lot of that research ends up in the Old Stuff series, too. And, like Christian, I get a little bit of a vibe from old clothes, so it would be really nice to work with them.

Kathy: Several pets make their home with Christian and her friends. Are you fortunate enough to have animals in your life? Are any of them similar to the animals in this series?

KMK: Yes! Cookie, Christian and Henry’s cat, is inspired by our late tuxedo kitty, Merritt. She was as loving and protective of my son as Cookie is of Henry. Our current kitty, Rheba, is much more like the Empress Frederick, the demanding little diva of the Historical Society.

Kathy: Christian's son, Henry has Type 1 diabetes. Was there a specific reason to give him this diagnosis?

KMK: I’m always looking for ways to make my stories and characters reflect the real world. During the pandemic, our neighbor’s son was diagnosed with Type 1, so I got up to speed for playdates, and put his mom in touch with my closest friend, whose adult son also has Type 1. I was working on THE STUFF OF MURDER one afternoon during a playdate. And I thought, why not write the condition be a normal part of life? Especially since most of the time you see a character with diabetes in a mystery it’s just as an excuse to use insulin as a weapon.

Kathy: Henry also has a photographic memory. Would you like to have this ability?

KMK: Mine is borderline photographic, but my son has a true photographic memory and it’s a little scary. And, like Henry, he sees the world a little differently. It’s a gift for tests and such…but can be a bit weird in real life. For the character of Henry, though, it’s perfect because it gives him a key crime-solving skill, as well as a defining quality that has nothing to do with his medical condition.

Kathy: Was there a specific inspiration for this story?

KMK: Initially, I was just looking for a way to use some of the research that didn’t make it into my historical mysteries. While I was noodling, I remembered that my mom and I used to love watching the old Alan Alda movie Sweet Liberty, in which a film crew comes to a college town and ruins everything. I thought – hmm, what if we did that with a murder?

Kathy: Will you share any other upcoming books?

KMK: The Ella Shane series is coming back at Level Best Books! A FATAL RECEPTION – the wedding book! – is due next April. Let’s just say Ella and her duke make it to the altar…but not before they have to deal with a murder, a shipwreck, a questionable Polish prince – and more!

 Review

THE STUFF OF MURDER by Kathleen Marple Kalb
The First Old Stuff Mystery

Christian Shaw knows her stuff...particularly old stuff. Head of the Unity Historical Society she also does consulting work, such as working with the movie production currently filming in her hometown. The movie, a version of The Scarlet Letter, is supposed to mark the comeback of Brett Studebaker. While filming an impassioned speech, he looks positively apoplectic. It's not, however, great acting. The actor falls off the pulpit upon which he was preaching and winds up dead. With the possibility of murder, Assistant State's Attorney is starting to ask questions and Christian, along with her friends and family are more than willing to help.

THE STUFF OF MURDER is ultimately a book about people. There is a murder, but the story is less about the investigation than it is about the people of Unity, Connecticut. It's actually much more realistic than most mysteries. Christian doesn't happen upon a murder and decide she's going to investigate and solve it. Rather the State's Attorney calls upon her expertise, she stumbles upon things and makes realizations then immediately calls him or the police, like a normal person would, but so few amateur sleuths do.

As this is the first book in the series there is a lot of exposition. However, there could have been less expounding and rather more showing. While it was interesting learning about Christian's religious beliefs as it impacts who she is, far too much time was spend on it as it really wasn't relevant to the plot. I did however, love all the historical details and how the Society works. Christian makes a great protagonist, smart, caring, and witty. She surrounds herself with great people too. I especially love all of the animals and am still laughing at Cookie and her reaction to Cannoli. Poor Cannoli. I also like the possibility of a second chance at romance for this widow. This subplot is a significant part of the book-so those who just want the murder and investigation may be frustrated. I, however, like it!

THE STUFF OF MURDER is a fresh timely mystery that connects people while serving justice.

Overdue or Die - A Review & Giveaway

 Review

OVERDUE OR DIE by Allison Brook
The Seventh Haunted Library Mystery

After a trying renovation, the new addition to the library is finally opening. In addition to providing much needed programming space, the library is also kicking off an art exhibit with paintings on loan from the debonair Victor Zalinka. With the grand opening overshadowed by a woman claiming the building actually belonged to her and worry that one of her employees is about to be poached by a local art gallery librarian Carrie Singleton barely has time to plan her wedding to Dylan. But when Dylan spots a forgery among Victor's paintings and gallery owner Martha Mallory winds up dead, murder becomes Carrie's main concern.

Art forgery, affairs, and one rotten family dominate the seventh Haunted Bookshop Mystery. I love how Dylan's expertise marries with Carrie's as they work to solve the mystery together...along with the Sheriff, of course. I also really like how Carrie has grown since her arrival in Clover Ridge. And honestly, I'd be as possessive as she is about the new library wing.

There were plenty of people to distrust and dislike in OVERDUE OR DIE, with a crime boss even making an appearance-and he was a character I liked! The plot skillfully weaved around art fraud, murder, and wedding preparations with some characters proving to have more depth than I'd originally thought. The ghostly Evelyn didn't make much of an appearance in this entry, but never having cared for her, I didn't miss her, although the haunted library wasn't very haunted.

With overlapping crimes OVERDUE OR DIE is an engaging and entertaining mystery that will keep you on your toes!

Carrie Singleton has a wedding to plan, a killer to catch, and a conspiracy to uncover in this charming seventh novel of Agatha Award-nominee Allison Brook’s Haunted Library mysteries.

Carrie Singleton has more than her fair share on her plate: her job at the Clover Ridge Library, preparing for her wedding to Dylan Avery, and hoping that the local art gallery doesn’t steal away one of her part-time employees. Her fiancĂ© Dylan accompanies her to the beautiful home of Victor Zalinka—art collector and successful businessman—to select paintings for an art show at the library. While Carrie muses that Victor's home would be the perfect wedding venue, Dylan spots a forgery among the paintings in Victor's collection. Then Martha Mallory is found murdered in her art gallery. With the assistance of Evelyn, the library ghost; the resident cat, Smoky Joe; and the office manager of Dylan’s private investigation company, Carrie comes up with a suspect list long enough to rival the size of an encyclopedia. During her investigation, Carrie stumbles across a terrible truth: Martha’s murder was part of something far bigger and more dangerous than she could have ever imagined. And it all leads back to the art gallery. How far will Carrie go to find the killer and uncover the truth? If the killer finds her first—will Carrie finally be taken out of circulation?
