Official Character Complaint Form - Guest Post & Giveaway

OFFICIAL CHARACTER COMPLAINT FORM FOR KATHI DALEY BOOKS

Date of initial complaint: June 16, 2017
Subject of complaint: Romance

Briefly describe your complaint:
Dear Ms. Daley,
While I have enjoyed working with you these past three years, I feel that when it comes to the area of happily ever after I have been slighted. Zoe and I began working with you within just a few weeks of one another, and while she is happily married to a wonderful man with a baby on the way, I am being asked to endure yet another heartache. I know that it is not your intent to treat any of your characters unfairly, but all I can say is; what’s up with that? I know you are really busy but if you could find it within your heart to find me the perfect match, I would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely, Tj

June 20, 2017
Dear Tj,
I hear what you are saying and I do feel your pain. It does seem that you have had the hardest time out of any of my characters when it comes to love and romance. I cannot predict the future since in the end it is the characters who write the stories, but my instinct is that love is right around the corner if you are willing to go all in and take a leap of faith.
Hugs, Kathi

Dear Ms. Daley,
Wow, when you said take a leap of faith I wasn’t aware that you meant a literal leap but I did as you suggested and I have to say that in spite of everything else that is suddenly wrong in my life I finally believe that love is real and happily ever after may in fact be an actual reality. I will admit to being scared and unsure but I am also hopeful, and most of all, happy.
Thank you, Tj

July 4, 2017
Dear Tj,
You are welcome. I’ve got things started, it is up to you to make them work. You are a brave young woman who is willing to take chances in most areas in your life. Don’t let fear be your guide, because in the end, the only real answer is to open your heart and let love in.
Hugs, Kathi

Currently Reading...

I'm currently reading The Ninja's Illusion by Gigi Pandian. This book is the fifth in the Jaya Jones Treasure Hunt Mystery series and was released yesterday!

Jaya Jones is overwhelmed with requests for help, both in historical research and treasure hunting. When Dr. Nakamura has questions about her work on the East India trade routes she decides to go to Japan in person. It's the perfect time as her best friend Sanjay, the Hindi Houdini, is also in Japan working with a controversial stage magician who supposedly can perform real miracles. But when Sanjay tells her not to come and the video call is prematurely disconnected, Jaya gets worried. Sure, Sanjay can be overdramatic, but something in his expression and voice said the danger was very real. Now Jaya is off on another adventure that's sure to be filled with history, peril, and treasure!

Chattin' with Ava Gruiex of Crepe Factor, Review, & Giveaway

I'm so pleased that Ava Gruiex, BFF to Carmela in Laura Childs' Scrapbooking Mystery series is able to spend time with us today. We're celebrating the paperback release of Crepe Factor, the fourteenth book in the series! Below you'll find a reprint of the review I wrote when the the book was originally published.

Kathy: What makes you and Carmela Bertrand such good friends?

AG: Dawlin’, we just get along even though we’re polar opposites. Carmela’s this nice sweet gal who keeps getting dragged into trouble. Me, I just slip into my four-inch stilettos and go looking for trouble.

Kathy: You and Carmela have had lots of adventures together. Why do you think she keeps getting involved with murder?

AG: Carmela hates to say no. If somebody asks her for help she’s there, no questions asked. And I’m talking about ex-husbands, ex-boyfriends, and even ex-ex-boyfriends. Carmela is so loyal and sweet and dear that she’ll bend over backwards to help. Plus, she’s smart. So even when the cops get all bogged down in their investigations, Carmela’s got this super human focus that can often cut through the clutter.

Kathy: In addition to dangerous escapades, you two also enjoy regular outings like the Winter Market, Zombie Crawl, and Ghost Train. Well, regular outings which often become dangerous. In any case, what’s your favorite type of outing to enjoy?

AG: There’s only one proper answer – Mardi Gras! This is the one celebration that folks in New Orleans live for. I mean, the city basically shuts down for this all-important event. Have you ever seen ten-story, lighted, animated floats with sea monsters? Flambeaus and masked riders? Float krewes tossing out doubloons and beads? Well, you need to put that on your bucket list!

Kathy: How did you decide to own a shop like Juju Voodoo?

AG: I was a former Alabama beauty queen who came to New Orleans and immediately fell in love with this magical, seductive city. From the antiquated charm of the French Quarter to the graceful homes of the Garden District, I was enchanted. So I decided to set down roots and open my tiny little voodoo shop. Lucky me, the tourists just started pouring in.

Kathy: What’s your favorite item to sell at Juju Voodoo?

AG: Love potions, of course. I have these adorable little colored bottles filled with oils and essences. Harmless, but so very powerful. I also have some tiny little stitched bags that contain love charms. Put one of those under your sweetie’s pillow and he’s yours for life!

Kathy: What do you say to people who consider you a bit over the top?

AG: I say come visit New Orleans and I’ll look like one of the normal people. I mean, this is a city that comes with a warning label. The Big Easy prides itself on haunted hotels, above-ground cemeteries, hot jazz, Bourbon Street, flickering gaslights, hidden courtyards, and sinful food and drink. What are you waiting for, come on down!

Kathy: Do you have any advice for Carmela or the readers here?

AG: Do not pass go, do not collect $200 (well, maybe grab that money) and rush to the nearest bookstore and grab a few Scrapbook Mysteries. Because here’s the thing – they’re not exactly about scrapbooking. Carmela’s scrapbook shop is kind of ground zero for crazy good old-fashioned mystery. So if you’re at all enchanted by New Orleans, if you love the idea of music (jazz, Cajun, and blues) pouring out of every door, if you want to sip the sights and sounds of New Orleans, then you’re going to love the New Orleans Scrapbooking Mysteries!

Kathy: Thanks for taking the time to chat with me.

AG: The pleasure was all mine!

Love and kisses,

Ava

CREPE FACTOR by Laura Childs with Terrie Farley Moran
The Fourteenth Scrapbooking Mystery
Carmela is making the rounds of more New Orleans events with gal pal Ava in their 14th outing. They get more than they bargained for at the Winter Market when they witness an ugly fight between Quigg Brevard, restaurateur and recent vintner, and Martin Lash, food critic and environmentalist. While exploring other tents they are surprised by Lash staggering in, throwing items into disarray, as he falls to his death-a huge serving fork protruding from his neck! The testosterone gets flowing when Detective Edgar Babcock, Carmela's boyfriend, arrives on the scene and other vendors share information about the fight between the victim and Quigg, who happens to have dated Carmela. Quigg, of course, asks Carmela to investigate while Babcock warns her off. Carmela has to deal with an ex who may want more than just her sleuthing skills, an overworked and unhappy boyfriend, the antics of her party friend, running her scrapbooking store as well as teaching crafting classes, and a murder! At least she has Boo and Poobah.

It's always fun to be back in New Orleans, especially with Carmela and Ava. CREPE FACTOR brings us New Orleans and all of the fun activities of Winter Market. It also brings us relationship issues with a too busy, and worried, Babcock and a Quigg in trouble and perhaps wanting to rekindle his old romance. He certainly wants more than Carmela's investigative skills. In getting Quigg off the hook is Carmela risking the loss of Babcock? Ever one to help others, Carmela finds herself in a bind. There's an emotional tension which is released by bouts of comic relief from over the top Ava to my favorite scene which had me laughing out loud thanks to scene stealer Cooter!

Childs brings the fun and excitement of New Orleans to readers in her latest Scrapbooking Mystery. A murder with plenty of possible motives, new characters on the scene as well as returning favorites, and scrapbooking hints and recipes make for a memorable chapter in this entertaining series.
Scrapbook, Stamping, and Craft Tips along with Recipes are included.

Ax to Grind -A Visit from Sheriff Kenni Lowry's Mama - Guest Post, Giveaway, & Review

I'm getting out of the way as Kenni Lowry's mama takes over Cozy Up With Kathy Today. You can read all about her in the Kenni Lowry Mystery series by Tonya Kappes.

Shooooweeee.

I tell you, being Sheriff Kenni Lowry's mama is a hard job. I mean, it was hard just being her mama, but the mama of the sheriff. Now that's somethin' I've got to live up to and it's hard. You know all them henny hens, that's what we call all the gossipy old ladies in Cottonwood, they call me when someone dies or some crime happens because they think I've got some inside scoop. Even if I did, I can only give them a tidbit just to give them somethin' to chew on.

Let me tell you, being a southern woman is not all it's cracked up to be. Not only do we all stayed dolled up all the time, join multiple committees, belong on several clubs, and live in pearls. . .we also have to cook.

I'm not talking any old recipe. I'm not talking just throwing things together.  I'm talking making from scratch cooking. You see, your cookin' abilities will make you or break you on the societal chain.
It's a competition of sorts, but no one would ever have the gall to call it what it is. We send days making several of the same casserole or dish and bring the best one. I know, because I do the same thing. I didn't win the big Cottonwood bake off and have my pot pie featured on the Cooking Channel for just throwing stuff together.

Now, go on and get out of here. I've got a southern chicken pot pie to make for Beryle Stone's repass. And I can't sit here all day gabbing about nothin'.

Oh, yes! That Beryle Stone. Mmhhmm, the big author with that huge box office, Academy Award winner from the 60's. She's a citizen of Cottonwood and she came back here to retire. Unfortunately, she died. So sad.

But I did hear from the girls in the Auxiliary group and down at Tiny Tina's Salon, which meant I heard it in two different places and it can't be rumor, that Beryle had written a tell all book. And it's about the people in Cottonwood. Tell all! She's gonna spill her guts and everyone in town is dying to get their hands on it.

AX TO GRIND by Tonya Kappes
The Third Kenni Lowry Mystery

Cottonwood, Kentucky is abuzz. Not only are tourists and fans flocking to the town for the estate sale of late author Berlye Stone, but with election for Sheriff not yet two years away campaigning as begun in earnest. Sheriff Kenni Lowry gets a bad feeling when Berlye's assistant demands higher security measures until Berlye's most recent manuscript, a book which is a tell-all about the real residents of Cottonwood, can be found. When the assistant is found dead behind the antique store with another woman injured inside Kenni knows she has to act fast. It's a good thing she has Deputy Finn Vincent and the ghost of her Poppy, Cottonwood's last Sheriff, to help her!

The Kenni Lowry Mystery series is filled with Southern charm and gossip with just the right touch of danger. Kenni Lowry is a woman I'd be right pleased to not only call my friend, but my Sheriff. She's competent and knows how to do her job and deal with the residents of her small town. Yet she doesn't have all the answers and can fall victim herself, professionally and in matters of the heart!

AX TO GRIND is a great addition to the series as Kenni is faced with another murder and accused, not only of not being able to keep her town safe, but playing kissy face with her deputy! There are plenty of laughs, especially from Kenni's mama, and lots of fun, such as saving Hettie from mysterious critters and doing a little matchmaking. Tonya Kappes includes the right amount of police procedure, a little romance, and a lot of gossip to create a great mystery.
