The Dodo Knight - A Review

Review

THE DODO KNIGHT by Michelle Rene

While most people are familiar with Lewis Carroll and his famous Alice books, not many know of the relationship between Charles Dodgson and Alice Liddell. And no one knows why their relationship crumbled. In this novella Rene poses one possible reason. Told through the eyes of young Alice Liddell we see how Charles, better known today as Lewis Carroll, loved games and nonsense and was more comfortable with children than adults. And we see how he was inspired to create that fictional Alice who traveled to Wonderland and through that Looking Glass.

Being a big fan of the fictional Alice and all of the Wonderland characters, I am also drawn to all things Lewis Carroll. Charles Dodgson led a fascinating life, with many parts mysteriously missing from history. I appreciate Michelle Rene's take on the subject, and the mystery of the Liddell Riddle in particular.

It is well known that Charles Dodgson was close with the Liddell family. Facts support the case that young Alice Liddell was the inspiration, the muse, if you will, of Alice. It is also known that for some reason, there was an estrangement between Dodgson and the Liddels. He no longer spent time with any members of the family, even as his novel, ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND became popular. What could have happened to distance these friends? Michelle Rene has researched  the facts and presents both a moving story and a plausible solution to the Liddell Riddle.

THE DODO KNIGHT is a story about a muse. It is at times, enchanting, nostalgic, and sad. This novella is a must read for any dedicated fan of Lewis Carroll and his Alice.
