Hello, my name is Nora Charles. A few years ago I gave up a successful career as a true crime reporter in Chicago to return to my home town of Cruz, California to take over my late mother’s sandwich shop. One of my customers, Louis Blondell, runs a digital crime magazine called Noir, and he convinced me to write articles for the magazine. Still, things just weren’t the same...until I met Nick.No, Nick’s not a romantic interest. He’s a tubby, twenty-something tuxedo cat with plenty of ‘cattitude’ that I found outside Hot Bread one night. My BFF, Chantal, convinced me to keep him. At the time I was working on a cold case article for Noir. Needless to say, Nick, whose former owner was a PI, helped me solve it – and we’ve been partners ever since.
Not to say that Nick can’t be annoying – he has a terrible habit of knowing just when someone will come to the door, or when my phone will ring – but his loyalty and devotion more than make up for it. He’s proved invaluable in detecting, as well. He also has an uncanny ability to spell out clues with his favorite toy, Scrabble tiles. While at first the clues seem meaningless, in the end they always seem to pan out in the solution of the mystery! Just one of his many abilities, which some think, border on the supernatural. Small wonder, since Nick Atkins his former owner, found him outside of a magic shop! But that’s a story for another day (coming soon, we promise!)
We’ve certainly had a lot of interesting adventures – from clearing my sister of the murder of her art professor, to investigating the curious death of a PI, to a ‘haunted’ house where it appeared a vampire was in residence, Nick and I have made sure that we follow every clue that comes our way until the criminal is brought to justice! And that’s never more true than in our latest undertaking!
In WHEN SLEUTHING SPELLS TROUBLE (a nod to Nick’s uncanny ability). My old friend and former CI, Hank Prince, asks me for a favor – to help prove that an old flame of his is innocent of the murder of her husband.
Six years ago Mariah Blackthorne was found lying on the floor of her home holding the murder weapon that killed her husband. She had no memory of what happened and ended up agreeing to a plea deal and went to prison. Now she’s out on parole and she desperately wants to learn the truth about what happened that night – even if it means discovering that she did murder him after all.
So Nick warned me of trouble ahead and was he ever right! There were no shortage of suspects in Blackthorne’s death, and Nick and I encountered a few vicious threats along the way. Did we solve it in the end?
