Deadly Darkness - A Review & Giveaway

Review

DEADLY DARKNESS by Kate Parker
The Sixth Deadly Mystery

As England grows ever closer to war, newlywed Olivia Redmond finds herself searching the countryside for lights during a blackout drill instead of canoodling with her new husband. When she sees illumination coming from a local manor house she, her husband, and Sir John discover the murdered body of the patriarch of the house, a venerated explorer. Suspicions abound as more is discovered about the dead baronet, including his ties to Germany and the fact that no one in the family is upset by his demise. Dreams of a romantic honeymoon are dashed as Olivia gets further enmeshed in the investigation. Will she be able to sort through the treacherous machinations of a killer, or will she become the next victim?

It's July 1939 and everything is tinged by darkness, not only the night sky. Olivia and Adam's wedding is a joyous event, despite the baronet trying to prevent the use of the church and the behavior of Olivia's father. Yet the knowledge that at any moment Captain Adam Redmond will be sent off to war dampens that joy. In Sir Rupert we have a despicable victim. Reputably a great explorer, readers soon discover how vile he actually was. Suspects are many and investigation leads to several previous suspicious deaths making for a compelling multilayered mystery.

The historical details, such as blackout drills, add to the rising tension and intensity of the story as well as the inevitability of war. But with darkness there is also light, found here in the antics of the boys along with enough humor to alleviate the gloom. The characters bring the story to life and give it heart. It's wonderful seeing how the they grow and adapt as the series continues. I love Olivia, her strength, her determination, and her ability to give a good put down when necessary.

DEADLY DARKNESS takes the ominous threat of looming war and combines it with a complex mystery complete with spies, Arctic exploration, and Nazis to make an outstanding atmospheric novel.

About Kate Parker

Kate Parker caught the reading bug early, and the writing bug soon followed. She’s always lived in a house surrounded by books and dust bunnies. After spending a dozen years in North Carolina, she moved to Colorado. The Rocky Mountains are beautiful, but she’d developed a love of wide rivers, warmer and wetter weather, and fast-growing greenery that sent her hurrying back to North Carolina.

Deadly Travel is the fifth book in the Deadly Series, and Kate’s plan is to follow it quickly with Deadly Darkness, both set in 1939 in the days leading up to war. There are at least three more of the Deadly Series coming that will bring the beginning of the war to Olivia’s doorstep. Kate reports that she is having fun creating new stories to entertain readers and chaos to challenge her characters.

Spring Upon a Crime - An Interview & Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome ML Erdahl to Cozy Up With Kathy today. ML writes the Seattle Wilderness Mystery series. Spring Upon a Crime is the second book in the series and was released last month.

Kathy: In Spring Upon a Crime we meet Crystal Rainey, a wilderness guide. Are you fond of hiking, camping, and other wilderness pursuits?

MLE: I spent my entire life enjoying the outdoors, including working in the Olympic National Park for several summers. It gave me an expansive knowledge to start from, but when I need to do more book research, it is way more fun than going to the library or searching on the internet. So far I have taken up snowshoeing, rock-climbing, and white-water river rafting to immerse myself, all to bring them to life in my books.

Kathy: Crystal has to deal with loggers, developers, and eco-protesters as she seeks to help her friend. Whose camp are you more inclined to be in?

MLE: I have a muddled background to be sure. I come from a home-steading family with both my grandfather and one of my uncles being loggers, but went on to a twenty year career as an environmental chemist. At the core, I am an environmentalist, but viscerally understand the hardships logging communities face when their income source is taken from them in the interest of conservation.

Kathy: The Olympic Peninsula is said to be breathtaking. In fact, my cousin recently moved there. What makes this location a perfect setting for your mystery series?

MLE: The Olympic Peninsula is peppered with quaint, quiet towns surrounding the stunning mountains. When I worked in the Olympic National Park, we used to leave the woods once a week to get burgers in Forks, so it was quite a shock to see it become a well-known name from the Twilight series. The tight-knit communities of the Peninsula make it the perfect place to set a cozy mystery. Everyone knows each other, allowing for that ideal level of gossip and suspicion.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

MLE: Years ago, my wife and I did a genre swap to spice up our reading life. I gave her Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, and she offered up mysteries. I loved the books by Mary Daheim, Janet Evanovich, and Nevada Barr, and my own mystery began percolating in my brain.

Kathy: Do you write in any other genres?

MLE: I haven’t yet, but I think my next series will be a paranormal cozy mystery series. It allows me to mash up my two favorite genres of fantasy and cozy.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

MLE: The Seattle Wilderness mystery series is Crystal Rainey’s story, who jumps off the corporate hamster wheel and bluffs her way into being a wilderness guide. She’s determined to succeed, but suffers from imposter syndrome as she leads people on their excursions..not to mention a whole lot of unfortunate murders.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

MLE: One-hundred percent, my favorite is Roxie, the hostess and chef. She is a former actress who adopts a southern accent since it gets her better reviews from guests who adore her classic Southern hospitality. She has a heart of gold, and lacks social filters, which makes her a ridiculous amount of fun to write.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

MLE: The outdoor seasons are a constantly changing setting that inspires the titles of the novels. The characters in my books are part imagination, as well a blending of people from my life (Many of my wife’s traits make it into Crystal’s personality.)

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

MLE: I wrote the first draft simply because I love writing. When it was finished, I re-read the book. I’m not going to lie, it was the roughest of rough drafts, but I could tell there was a top-notch story at the core. I joined my local writers’ association, read books on the craft, and hired an editor. I applied everything I learned to the revisions until it was highly polished, and then pitched it to what is now my current publisher, The Wild Rose Press. The rest is history.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

MLE: This is a tough one, since there are so many interesting author personalities. However, if it comes down to it, I’m sending invitations to Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe, JRR Tolkien, and Robert Jordan.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

MLE: An ARC for Deadly Reunion by my friend and fellow cozy author Linda Hope Lee.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

MLE: As you can guess, I am constantly hiking, camping, and jumping into the outdoor activity I’m currently writing about. However, in my quiet time, I love to read and garden. The zen of those activities keeps me grounded for my otherwise hectic life.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry.

MLE: Coffee (I am from Seattle after all), tea, cheese, and trail mix—Everything I need to face the day.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books either in your current series or a new series?

MLE: The Seattle Wilderness Mystery series will be at least four books, one for each season. After that, I’ll probably start my paranormal cozy series before returning to Crystal’s adventures at a later date.

Kathy: What's your favorite thing about being an author?

MLE: The best moments are when inspiration strikes, and you know you’ve concocted the perfect scene. The pen flows across the paper, and the details fill themselves in. It’s a magical moment when all you want to do is keep writing forever.

Farm to Trouble - A Review

 Review

FARM TO TROUBLE by Amanda Flower
The First Farm to Table Mystery

Shiloh Bellamy has left life as a Hollywood producer to try to help her ailing father and save her family farm in Cherry Glen, Michigan. With a plan she's sure her father won't like, Shiloh finds an investor and agrees to a cutthroat agreement-if she doesn't turn a profit in two years she could lose the farm. What she doesn't know is that the investor is one of the most despised men in town. Buying up property left and right and almost owning the entire town already, he's seen as the devil incarnate. Shiloh also didn't know how bad the farm's condition truly was. Feeling she has no choice but to finalize her deal with the devil, Shiloh goes to meet him at the Farmer's Market only to find his dead body. With a less than stellar return home, Shiloh knows she'd better root out a killer, before she loses the farm!

Generally, cozy mysteries have a setting I want to spend time in and people with whom I want to hang out. I'm not sure I feel that way about Cherry Glen. The small town may have changed from run down to burgeoning, but the majority of its residents are unpleasant and downright nasty! I can't stand Shiloh's cousin, which is surprising as I'm a theatre person and adore the restoration of old buildings. Shiloh's father is a jerk, Quinn's mother is a shrew, and I have no words for Minnie! The good news is that I do like Shiloh, who is competent, hard working, and kind. I love Huckleberry, who is quite the character! There are some pleasant people in town and I hope they take on more prominence in future books.

The mystery itself was intriguing and well plotted, with almost everyone a possible suspect. I especially liked the fact that while the mystery was solved, there are ongoing issues to address and another puzzle to figure out. I also think a certain character may have a new role in the next book and I look forward to seeing if my hunch is correct.

With FARM TO TROUBLE Amanda Flower has planted the seeds of a richly satisfying mystery series. I look forward to watching the characters grow and flourish...and seeing who gets weeded out next!

Mrs. Morris and the Sorceress - A Review

 Review

MRS. MORRIS AND THE SORCERESS by Traci Wilton
The Fourth Salem B&B Mystery

It's Independence Day and Charlene Morris has a new group of guests. As part of their stay Charlene arranges for the group to see an outdoor production of Salem's Rebels, a new play by the local theatre group. Although the historical event being portrayed went off without a shot fired, that isn't the case in the play as the charismatic lead actress crumples to the ground, shot dead by a real gun. Who could have brazenly shot the young woman in broad daylight at a crowded event. And why? Charlene is once again compelled to investigate, but will she go too far this time?

The Salem B&B Mystery series combines history and a touch of the paranormal into a modern day, fun, and compelling mystery. In this fourth outing we see Charlene get to know more Salem residents and see her letting go and having fun. We also see her overstep her bounds; at least I saw that. I was put off by her reaction when she was called out on her behavior, but perhaps that's the former police officer in me.

I find the relationship triangle (not quite sure I'd call it a love triangle...yet) between Charlene, her ghostly friend Jack, and Detective Sam interesting. With thoughts of her dead husband, it's more like a love square. Each man brings something different and all are lacking. I love the added dimension that Jack brings and the new ways he's found to help Charlene. I'm uncertain where the relationship between Charlene and Sam is going...if anywhere, but hope the mystery trumps all of her relationship angst. I did enjoy the complexity this mystery provided and as well as witnessing the many sides to the various personalities involved.

MRS. MORRIS AND THE SORCERESS is an intriguing mystery filled with complex characters. I am always happy to visit Salem am looking forward to seeing what Charlene gets involved with next.
