All That Glitters Isn't Old - A Review

 Review

ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD by Gabby Allan
The Third Whit and Whiskers Mystery

Tensions run high when Goldy's old flame returns to Catalina Island. Darren is not only there for his mother's funeral, but is premiering a film he created about the small island community. When his boyfriend falls to his death from the catwalk of the theatre what first appears to be a tragic accident starts to look like murder. Darren becomes the prime suspect, but Goldy insists he's innocent and demands Whit find out who, if anyone, killed his boyfriend. Whit will have to put her business on hold once again as she searches for the truth while also trying to rein Goldy in and be peacemaker between her and Pops, all while not stepping on the new police captain's toes!

The third Whit and Whiskers Mystery makes me grateful I'm not Whit and don't have to acquiesce to Goldie. Goldie I just wanted to smack for her blind devotion to Darren. I love how so much of the mystery plays to the unknown. Something is wrong, but we don't know just what. Something is going on on the island, but we don't know what. Things are just off, adding to the sense of unease and  ratcheting up the suspense.

One of the things I like best about ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD lies in those last two words of the title: ISN'T OLD. The drama revolves around older people. Older people who are vibrant (maybe too vibrant in Goldie's case) with important ideas and goals, who have a love life and the ability to carry out all of these things. Old people don't just vanish. They aren't invisible here. They play a vital role. I appreciate how important they and their actions are to the story-be they in their 70s or 90s! Add to the fact they can be good or bad people as well. I love that older people aren't shrugged off and play as pivotal a role in society as 20 and 30 somethings...perhaps even more so.

With some time in the sun and the water, an adorable octopus, and some crafty characters, ALL THAT GLITTERS ISN'T OLD is a fun mystery that proves that age is just a number and you shouldn't automatically trust your elders!
