Burning Interview and Giveaway

I'm pleased to welcome David Burnsworth to Cozy Up With Kathy today. David pens the Brack Pelton Mystery series. BURNING HEAT is the second book in the series and was released January 20th.

Kathy: Setting plays such an important role in a mystery. Why is Charleston, South Carolina the perfect location for your book?

DB: Out of all the places I have had the opportunity to live, it by far has the most personality. I lived on Sullivan’s Island and worked in North Charleston. Coming home from work and crossing the bridge onto the island was like entering paradise every day. I had a view of the intra-coastal waterway and the ocean was fifty yards from my apartment. Pelicans flew over my home and dolphins fed in the harbor right in front of the semi-private beach where I spent my weekends. Because of all that, there could be no other setting for my first two books, SOUTHERN HEAT and BURNING HEAT.

Kathy: Is the Pirate’s Cove based on a real bar?

DB: When I lived in Charleston, I spent a lot of time in many of the beach and downtown watering holes. It is a conglomeration of many blurry images. What I wanted to portray in the books was the atmosphere of the good times I had.

Kathy: What first drew you to cozy mysteries?

DB: I like that they typically have clean language. I refrain from using certain words in my books because I don’t like to use them in real life, either. Also, I prefer to leave the gratuitous sex scenes to other genres.

Kathy: Tell us about your series.

DB: My Brack Pelton series follows Brack, an Afghanistan war veteran and amateur sleuth, through the many facets and class levels of Charleston, South Carolina. He first solves his uncle’s murder case, and then tracks down the killer of a young prostitute.

Kathy: Do you have a favorite character? If so, who and why?

DB: I enjoy writing Brack the most. In a lot of ways, he is like me or like someone I wish I were. He’s taller and certainly more coordinated than I am in the physical sense. And he’s able to handle situations that would certainly not end well if I were the one facing them.

Kathy: Did you have a specific inspiration for your series?

DB: The time I lived in Charleston for sure.

Kathy: What made you decide to publish your work?

DB: I had a lot of support along the way. My wife is a big fan. Without her, I would never have taken the steps toward being an author, much less have two books in print. And then there is the South Carolina Writers Workshop. It was that organization that helped me polish my writing craft enough for it to be considered for publication.

Kathy: If you could have a dinner party and invite 4 authors, living or dead, in any genre, who would you invite?

DB: Ulysses S. Grant, Mickey Spillane, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ian Fleming.

Kathy: What are you currently reading?

DB: THE PROMISE, by Robert Crais. I really enjoy Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. This book also has the characters from his new K9 unit series, Scott and Maggie the dog.

Kathy: Will you share any of your hobbies or interests with us?

DB: I like automobiles, music, and U.S. History. Probably in that order.

Kathy: Name 4 items you always have in your fridge or pantry?

DB: Unsweetened vanilla almond milk, cereal, yogurt, various dried fruit, and cookies.

Kathy: Do you have plans for future books in your current series or a new series?

DB: I have finished the manuscript for the third book in the Brack Pelton series and have begun a new P.I. series also set in the Charleston, South Carolina area.

Kathy: What’s your favorite thing about being an author?

DB: Having the story come together. You didn’t ask, but the second favorite is being able to talk with readers.

Kathy: Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions.

DB: Thank you so much for having me. I appreciate the opportunity to have your followers meet me in the virtual sense and I enjoy hearing from readers. God Bless!
