Hazel Cavanaugh Speaks her Piece - A Guest Post

I'm happy to welcome Hazel Cavanaugh to Cozy Up With Kathy today. You can find Hazel on the pages of the Grime Pays Mystery series by Tricia L. Sanders. Death, Diamonds, and Freezer Burn is the second book in the series and was released October 24, 2018.

I know everyone’s been listening to my daughter-in-law malign me, so I think I need to take the opportunity to defend myself. I know the mother-in-law is always portrayed as the devil, but Cecelia, or Cece as she wants everyone to call her, is no angel. Not by any stretch. She was barely out of high school when she latched on to my son, Phillip. What girl wouldn’t? Phillip came with a bright future and a trust fund.

I tried to dissuade my son from marrying her, but he was just as determined as Cecelia. I finally had to threaten the terms of his trust fund. I told Phillip that if Cecelia didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement, then his trust fund would vanish. I had my attorney draw up the agreement for Cecelia to sign. I figured that would send her packing, but it didn’t.

Cecelia’s family history is a bit sketchy. I do have to admit she’s a good mother to my grandchildren. Not that she learned from her own. When Phillip met Cecelia, she and her mother were living in their car—a Ford Pinto. The mother has a problem with alcohol and men. She hasn’t met a bottle or a man she doesn’t like. Cecelia tries to act like her mother’s issues are all in the past, but I think not. I cringe whenever that woman comes around my granddaughters.

My granddaughters need positive role models in their life. That’s why I always spend as much time with Jessica and Michelle as possible. They are Cavanaughs. It’s my goal in life to make sure those girls know how Cavanaughs act. No matter what Cecelia does with her money, I’ll always make sure those girls have access to the finest, including their education, membership in country club here in Wickford, and whatever else they need to succeed. They, too, will have trust funds, so they need to learn from their father’s mistake. When the time comes, there will be prenuptial agreements for their prospective husbands too.

One cannot be too careful as my son will soon learn. Despite the prenuptial, he will not escape his marriage unscathed. This divorce will cost him plenty, but it will be worth it to be rid of Cecelia. However, I have an ace-in-the-hole—Beatrice. Cecelia believes I’ve hired Beatrice to clean her house. Cecelia agreed to have the help, and it just cements my theory that Cecelia is a taker. But there’s more to Beatrice’s employment. She’s providing me with relevant information my son can use in court to lessen the financial blow this divorce will cause him. Yes, I have a spy in the house.

Despite a looming divorce, an empty checkbook, and a struggling cleaning business, Cece Cavanaugh is determined to land on her own two feet. Adamant about staying a safe distance from the handsome detective who has her fantasizing about violating the morals clause in her prenuptial agreement, Cece dives headlong into her work.
Even though she has no free time to spare, Cece finds herself guilted into cleaning a hoarder’s home. Her discoveries in the condemned house are too shocking to ignore. Diamond-laden pachyderms, a secret cache of money, and a dead body lure Cece into launching an investigation that places her in direct contact with the one person she’s desperate to avoid--hunky Detective Case Alder.
With clues in hand, Cece runs down leads and eliminates suspects one by one. Her conclusion and brave accusation put a friend’s life in peril forcing Cece to hatch a plan to outsmart the killer. A daring move could either save Cece and her friend or lead to their demise.

About the Author

Tricia L. Sanders writes cozy mysteries and women’s fiction. She adds a dash of romance and a sprinkling of snark to raise the stakes. Her heroines are humorous women embarking on journeys of self-discovery all the while doing so with class, sass, and a touch of kickass. Tricia is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, so don't get between her and the television when a game is on. Currently, she is working on a mystery series set in the fictional town of Wickford, Missouri. Another project in the works is a women's fiction road trip adventure. A former instructional designer and corporate trainer, she traded in curriculum writing for novel writing, because she hates bullet points and loves to make stuff up. And fiction is more fun than training guides and lesson plans.
